Christ’s Transfiguration is a reminder that “God is light,” Pope Benedict XVI told his midday audience on Sunday, March 4.
Speaking about the day’s Gospel, which retold the story of the Transfiguration, the Pope said that Jesus wished “to reveal his divine glory, splendor of truth and of love.” Knowing that his disciples would be shaken by the events that were to come, Jesus “wanted this light to illuminate the hearts of the people who would have to experience the black night of His passion and death, when the scandal of the cross would be unbearable to them.”
When they understood the true meaning of the Cross and Resurrection, the Pope continued, the disciples recognized Jesus as “an inner light in them, capable of protecting them from the onslaught of darkness.” The Pontiff added that all believers “need an inner light to overcome the trials of life,” and should recognize that Jesus offers that light.
Pope Benedict gave his Angelus audience after returning from a visit to the parish of St. John the Baptist de la Salle, in the south of Rome, earlier in the morning.
