Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion

HE TOOK THE NATURE OF A SERVANT

Matthew 26:14-27:66 (Good News Translation)

14 Then one of the twelve disciples—the one named Judas Iscariot—went to the chief priests 15 and asked, “What will you give me if I betray Jesus to you?” They counted out thirty silver coins and gave them to him. 16 From then on Judas was looking for a good chance to hand Jesus over to them. 17 On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus and asked him, “Where do you want us to get the Passover meal ready for you?” 18 “Go to a certain man in the city,” he said to them, “and tell him: “The Teacher says, My hour has come; my disciples and I will celebrate the Passover at your house.” ” 19 The disciples did as Jesus had told them and prepared the Passover meal. 20 When it was evening, Jesus and the twelve disciples sat down to eat. 21 During the meal Jesus said, “I tell you, one of you will betray me.” 22 The disciples were very upset and began to ask him, one after the other, “Surely, Lord, you don't mean me?” 23 Jesus answered, “One who dips his bread in the dish with me will betray me. 24 The Son of Man will die as the Scriptures say he will, but how terrible for that man who will betray the Son of Man! It would have been better for that man if he had never been born! ” 25 Judas, the traitor, spoke up. “Surely, Teacher, you don't mean me?” he asked. Jesus answered, “So you say.” 26 While they were eating, Jesus took a piece of bread, gave a prayer of thanks, broke it, and gave it to his disciples. “Take and eat it,” he said; “this is my body.” 27 Then he took a cup, gave thanks to God, and gave it to them. “Drink it, all of you,” he said; 28 “this is my blood, which seals God's covenant, my blood poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. 29 I tell you, I will never again drink this wine until the day I drink the new wine with you in my Father's Kingdom. ” 30 Then they sang a hymn and went out to the Mount of Olives. 31 Then Jesus said to them, “This very night all of you will run away and leave me, for the scripture says, “God will kill the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.” 32 But after I am raised to life, I will go to Galilee ahead of you. ” 33 Peter spoke up and said to Jesus, “I will never leave you, even though all the rest do!” 34 Jesus said to Peter, “I tell you that before the rooster crows tonight, you will say three times that you do not know me.” 35 Peter answered, “I will never say that, even if I have to die with you!” And all the other disciples said the same thing. 36 Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” 37 He took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee. Grief and anguish came over him, 38 and he said to them, “The sorrow in my heart is so great that it almost crushes me. Stay here and keep watch with me.” 39 He went a little farther on, threw himself face downward on the ground, and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, take this cup of suffering from me! Yet not what I want, but what you want.” 40 Then he returned to the three disciples and found them asleep; and he said to Peter, “How is it that you three were not able to keep watch with me for even one hour? 41 Keep watch and pray that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak. ” 42 Once more Jesus went away and prayed, “My Father, if this cup of suffering cannot be taken away unless I drink it, your will be done.” 43 He returned once more and found the disciples asleep; they could not keep their eyes open. 44 Again Jesus left them, went away, and prayed the third time, saying the same words. 45 Then he returned to the disciples and said, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Look! The hour has come for the Son of Man to be handed over to the power of sinners. 46 Get up, let us go. Look, here is the man who is betraying me! ” 47 Jesus was still speaking when Judas, one of the twelve disciples, arrived. With him was a large crowd armed with swords and clubs and sent by the chief priests and the elders. 48 The traitor had given the crowd a signal: “The man I kiss is the one you want. Arrest him!” 49 Judas went straight to Jesus and said, “Peace be with you, Teacher,” and kissed him. 50 Jesus answered, “Be quick about it, friend!” Then they came up, arrested Jesus, and held him tight. 51 One of those who were with Jesus drew his sword and struck at the High Priest's slave, cutting off his ear. 52 “Put your sword back in its place,” Jesus said to him. “All who take the sword will die by the sword. 53 Don't you know that I could call on my Father for help, and at once he would send me more than twelve armies of angels? 54 But in that case, how could the Scriptures come true which say that this is what must happen? ” 55 Then Jesus spoke to the crowd, “Did you have to come with swords and clubs to capture me, as though I were an outlaw? Every day I sat down and taught in the Temple, and you did not arrest me. 56 But all this has happened in order to make come true what the prophets wrote in the Scriptures. ” Then all the disciples left him and ran away. 57 Those who had arrested Jesus took him to the house of Caiaphas, the High Priest, where the teachers of the Law and the elders had gathered together. 58 Peter followed from a distance, as far as the courtyard of the High Priest's house. He went into the courtyard and sat down with the guards to see how it would all come out. 59 The chief priests and the whole Council tried to find some false evidence against Jesus to put him to death; 60 but they could not find any, even though many people came forward and told lies about him. Finally two men stepped up 61 and said, “This man said, “I am able to tear down God's Temple and three days later build it back up.” ” 62 The High Priest stood up and said to Jesus, “Have you no answer to give to this accusation against you?” 63 But Jesus kept quiet. Again the High Priest spoke to him, “In the name of the living God I now put you under oath: tell us if you are the Messiah, the Son of God.” 64 Jesus answered him, “So you say. But I tell all of you: from this time on you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right side of the Almighty and coming on the clouds of heaven!” 65 At this the High Priest tore his clothes and said, “Blasphemy! We don't need any more witnesses! You have just heard his blasphemy! 66 What do you think? ” They answered, “He is guilty and must die.” 67 Then they spat in his face and beat him; and those who slapped him 68 said, “Prophesy for us, Messiah! Guess who hit you!” 69 Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard when one of the High Priest's servant women came to him and said, “You, too, were with Jesus of Galilee.” 70 But he denied it in front of them all. “I don't know what you are talking about,” he answered, 71 and went on out to the entrance of the courtyard. Another servant woman saw him and said to the men there, “He was with Jesus of Nazareth.” 72 Again Peter denied it and answered, “I swear that I don't know that man!” 73 After a little while the men standing there came to Peter. “Of course you are one of them,” they said. “After all, the way you speak gives you away!” 74 Then Peter said, “I swear that I am telling the truth! May God punish me if I am not! I do not know that man!” Just then a rooster crowed, 75 and Peter remembered what Jesus had told him: “Before the rooster crows, you will say three times that you do not know me.” He went out and wept bitterly. 1 Early in the morning all the chief priests and the elders made their plans against Jesus to put him to death. 2 They put him in chains, led him off, and handed him over to Pilate, the Roman governor. 3 When Judas, the traitor, learned that Jesus had been condemned, he repented and took back the thirty silver coins to the chief priests and the elders. 4 “I have sinned by betraying an innocent man to death!” he said. “What do we care about that?” they answered. “That is your business!” 5 Judas threw the coins down in the Temple and left; then he went off and hanged himself. 6 The chief priests picked up the coins and said, “This is blood money, and it is against our Law to put it in the Temple treasury.” 7 After reaching an agreement about it, they used the money to buy Potter's Field, as a cemetery for foreigners. 8 That is why that field is called “Field of Blood” to this very day. 9 Then what the prophet Jeremiah had said came true: “They took the thirty silver coins, the amount the people of Israel had agreed to pay for him, 10 and used the money to buy the potter's field, as the Lord had commanded me. ” 11 Jesus stood before the Roman governor, who questioned him. “Are you the king of the Jews?” he asked. “So you say,” answered Jesus. 12 But he said nothing in response to the accusations of the chief priests and elders. 13 So Pilate said to him, “Don't you hear all these things they accuse you of” 14 But Jesus refused to answer a single word, with the result that the Governor was greatly surprised. 15 At every Passover Festival the Roman governor was in the habit of setting free any one prisoner the crowd asked for. 16 At that time there was a well-known prisoner named Jesus Barabbas. 17 So when the crowd gathered, Pilate asked them, “Which one do you want me to set free for you? Jesus Barabbas or Jesus called the Messiah?” 18 He knew very well that the Jewish authorities had handed Jesus over to him because they were jealous. 19 While Pilate was sitting in the judgment hall, his wife sent him a message: “Have nothing to do with that innocent man, because in a dream last night I suffered much on account of him.” 20 The chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowd to ask Pilate to set Barabbas free and have Jesus put to death. 21 But Pilate asked the crowd, “Which one of these two do you want me to set free for you?” “Barabbas!” they answered. 22 “What, then, shall I do with Jesus called the Messiah?” Pilate asked them. “Crucify him!” they all answered. 23 But Pilate asked, “What crime has he committed?” Then they started shouting at the top of their voices: “Crucify him!” 24 When Pilate saw that it was no use to go on, but that a riot might break out, he took some water, washed his hands in front of the crowd, and said, “I am not responsible for the death of this man! This is your doing!” 25 The whole crowd answered, “Let the responsibility for his death fall on us and on our children!” 26 Then Pilate set Barabbas free for them; and after he had Jesus whipped, he handed him over to be crucified. 27 Then Pilate's soldiers took Jesus into the governor's palace, and the whole company gathered around him. 28 They stripped off his clothes and put a scarlet robe on him. 29 Then they made a crown out of thorny branches and placed it on his head, and put a stick in his right hand; then they knelt before him and made fun of him. “Long live the King of the Jews!” they said. 30 They spat on him, and took the stick and hit him over the head. 31 When they had finished making fun of him, they took the robe off and put his own clothes back on him. Then they led him out to crucify him. 32 As they were going out, they met a man from Cyrene named Simon, and the soldiers forced him to carry Jesus' cross. 33 They came to a place called Golgotha, which means, “The Place of the Skull.” 34 There they offered Jesus wine mixed with a bitter substance; but after tasting it, he would not drink it. 35 They crucified him and then divided his clothes among them by throwing dice. 36 After that they sat there and watched him. 37 Above his head they put the written notice of the accusation against him: “This is Jesus, the King of the Jews.” 38 Then they crucified two bandits with Jesus, one on his right and the other on his left. 39 People passing by shook their heads and hurled insults at Jesus: 40 “You were going to tear down the Temple and build it back up in three days! Save yourself if you are God's Son! Come on down from the cross!” 41 In the same way the chief priests and the teachers of the Law and the elders made fun of him: 42 “He saved others, but he cannot save himself Isn't he the king of Israel? If he will come down off the cross now, we will believe in him! 43 He trusts in God and claims to be God's Son. Well, then, let us see if God wants to save him now! ” 44 Even the bandits who had been crucified with him insulted him in the same way. 45 At noon the whole country was covered with darkness, which lasted for three hours. 46 At about three o'clock Jesus cried out with a loud shout, “ Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani? ” which means, “My God, my God, why did you abandon me?” 47 Some of the people standing there heard him and said, “He is calling for Elijah!” 48 One of them ran up at once, took a sponge, soaked it in cheap wine, put it on the end of a stick, and tried to make him drink it. 49 But the others said, “Wait, let us see if Elijah is coming to save him!” 50 Jesus again gave a loud cry and breathed his last. 51 Then the curtain hanging in the Temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split apart, 52 the graves broke open, and many of God's people who had died were raised to life. 53 They left the graves, and after Jesus rose from death, they went into the Holy City, where many people saw them. 54 When the army officer and the soldiers with him who were watching Jesus saw the earthquake and everything else that happened, they were terrified and said, “He really was the Son of God!” 55 There were many women there, looking on from a distance, who had followed Jesus from Galilee and helped him. 56 Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the wife of Zebedee. 57 When it was evening, a rich man from Arimathea arrived; his name was Joseph, and he also was a disciple of Jesus. 58 He went into the presence of Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Pilate gave orders for the body to be given to Joseph. 59 So Joseph took it, wrapped it in a new linen sheet, 60 and placed it in his own tomb, which he had just recently dug out of solid rock. Then he rolled a large stone across the entrance to the tomb and went away. 61 Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were sitting there, facing the tomb. 62 The next day, which was a Sabbath, the chief priests and the Pharisees met with Pilate 63 and said, “Sir, we remember that while that liar was still alive he said, “I will be raised to life three days later.” 64 Give orders, then, for his tomb to be carefully guarded until the third day, so that his disciples will not be able to go and steal the body, and then tell the people that he was raised from death. This last lie would be even worse than the first one. ” 65 “Take a guard,” Pilate told them; “go and make the tomb as secure as you can.” 66 So they left and made the tomb secure by putting a seal on the stone and leaving the guard on watch.

Lectio

To understand all the theological and vital dimensions of this Sunday, as well as those of the Holy Week we start today, we must frame it in the context provided by the readings from Isaiah and Paul. During Advent and Christmas time, there were a number of texts taken from the book of Isaiah. In them, we could find the paradoxical Messiah that God was going to send to his people: everybody expected some powerful king, who would destroy the Roman Empire and restore the ancient grandeur of Israel. Instead, we found him as a baby lying in a manger, humble, ignored, and persecuted. No courtiers or noblemen to flatter him, no priests to anoint him… just mysterious angels, a few shepherds and some foreign wise men from the East. The text we read today, and those in the upcoming weekday masses, is also taken from Isaiah: in this case, from the Servant Songs, in which we find again the paradox of a suffering man who would redeem his people from their sins. Now, at the very beginning of the fulfilment of his mission, the liturgy presents Jesus’ destiny such as it is faithfully described in the hymn that Paul includes in his letter to the Philippians. The Word, which existed sharing God’s nature and was equal to him, did not abhor becoming man and humiliating himself down to an ignominious death, that of a bandit, to show God’s love to humankind. Through his obedience, he ascended again to the highest place above receiving the name greater than any other name. It is from that perspective that we must set Jesus’ entrance in Jerusalem: no red carpet, but some branches and a few cloaks spread on the road; no fanfare or display of weapons, but hymns of praise to the Lord; no chariots or horses, but a donkey and her colt. At the same time, defying the paradox, the crowd can recognise that Jesus is ‘of the house of David’, such as the shepherds recognised God’s presence in a baby lying in a manger. From that moment of glory, we will see him betrayed, arrested, abandoned, tortured, subjected to an unfair trial, sentenced to death and executed: sinking, plummeting to the lowest level of humiliation and annihilation by death on the cross. Was that the end? Not at all. ‘Because he was humble and devoted, God heard him’… ‘he became the source of eternal salvation’ (Hebrews 5:7-10) and ‘God raised him to the highest place above’ and was proclaimed Lord (Philippians 2:11). That is the process we are invited to follow in the celebration of the mysteries of Holy Week

Meditatio

The crowd that acclaims Jesus ‘God bless he who comes in the name of the Lord!’ is the same who will shout a few days later ‘Crucify him!’ Think of yourself and the occasions in which you too have changed your attitude towards Christ. Analyze the reasons for those changes of mind. Which Christ do you prefer? The one who walked the entire path to his death on the cross or the one who was risen and glorified? Look for the way to unite both in your heart.

Oratio

Consider your ‘ambiguity’ with regard to Christ and humbly pray for strength and constancy in your faith. Pray for those who look up to Christ crucified on the cross, but do not dare to take the steps to accept him as their Lord: that they may receive the grace of finding and following him. Pray also for those who suffer: that they may find him and that he can strengthen them in their weariness.

Contemplatio

The Passion narrative is a long, rich text. Use it as a source of inspiration during this week. Focus your attention on the different characters (Judas, Peter, Pilate…); or on the places where the action took place (the Temple, the garden of Gethsemane, the Golgotha…) Look at Christ in those places and with those people, and try to imagine which feelings he may have had.

Ціна її вища над перлини! 11. Серце її мужа покладається на неї;
ти ж перевищила усіх їх. 30. Краса - річ оманлива, врода - марна;

Word of the Fathers (in English):

St. Macarius the Great in 1983

83. Knowing the dignity of life and how precious are reasonable creatures, or things that heaven and earth passes, and you called to adoption, to the brotherhood, the bride of Christ? In the visible world, everything is zhenyhove and the bride, and all of God vviryayetsya you. For the sake of your salvation, God came to call you. And you yourself do not do that to not understand his calling. So true spiritual man weep thy fall, saying: The man who lives in wealth foolishly, like a beast that perishes (Ps. 48:21).

Word of the Fathers (in Ukrainian):

св.

2 Corinthians 9:6

Sow Bountifully

KEY VERSE: "But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully," 2 Corinthians 9:6.

In certain areas, and at a certain place in time, the farmer went out to sow by hand. He would strap on a canvas contraption, which looked somewhat like a kangaroo pouch, fill it with seed and go out to sow. He would cast seed everywhere. When a farmer sowed seed in his field, it looked like he was throwing it away. It seemed to be lost, but it was not really gone. In due time he got it back—with much more besides.

God is our example in giving liberally. He is a generous God and we as His children should never be stingy with our giving. God loves a cheerful giver.

Mary is a good example for us. She anointed Jesus with a priceless ointment, not a cut-rate oil. God rewards the bountiful sower. Jesus praised Mary by saying, "That this woman hath done, be told for a memorial of her" (Matt 26:13).

Givers can be divided into three types-the flint, the sponge and the honeycomb. Some givers are like a piece of flint-to get anything out of it you must hammer it, and even then you get only chips and sparks. Others are like a sponge—the more you squeeze it, the more you get. Others are like a honeycomb—overflowing with its own sweetness.

LIVING IT: We should give like God gives to us, and let Mary be our example for giving.

Readings for Thursday, 14 April

The Commemmoration of the Episcopal ordination of Mar Thomas Chakiath (1998)

Scriptural Readings:
1 Jn. 1:8-2:2 We are sinners

John 1:8-2:2 (King James Version)

8He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.

9That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.

10He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.

11He came unto his own, and his own received him not.

12But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

13Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

14And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

15John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me: for he was before me.

16And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace.

17For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.

18No man hath seen God at any time, the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.

19And this is the record of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who art thou?

20And he confessed, and denied not; but confessed, I am not the Christ.

21And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elias? And he saith, I am not. Art thou that prophet? And he answered, No.

22Then said they unto him, Who art thou? that we may give an answer to them that sent us. What sayest thou of thyself?

23He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Esaias.

24And they which were sent were of the Pharisees.

25And they asked him, and said unto him, Why baptizest thou then, if thou be not that Christ, nor Elias, neither that prophet?

26John answered them, saying, I baptize with water: but there standeth one among you, whom ye know not;

27He it is, who coming after me is preferred before me, whose shoe's latchet I am not worthy to unloose.

28These things were done in Bethabara beyond Jordan, where John was baptizing.

29The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.

30This is he of whom I said, After me cometh a man which is preferred before me: for he was before me.

31And I knew him not: but that he should be made manifest to Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water.

32And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him.

33And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost.

34And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God.

35Again the next day after John stood, and two of his disciples;

36And looking upon Jesus as he walked, he saith, Behold the Lamb of God!

37And the two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus.

38Then Jesus turned, and saw them following, and saith unto them, What seek ye? They said unto him, Rabbi, (which is to say, being interpreted, Master,) where dwellest thou?

39He saith unto them, Come and see. They came and saw where he dwelt, and abode with him that day: for it was about the tenth hour.

40One of the two which heard John speak, and followed him, was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother.

41He first findeth his own brother Simon, and saith unto him, We have found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ.

42And he brought him to Jesus. And when Jesus beheld him, he said, Thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas, which is by interpretation, A stone.

43The day following Jesus would go forth into Galilee, and findeth Philip, and saith unto him, Follow me.

44Now Philip was of Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.

45Philip findeth Nathanael, and saith unto him, We have found him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.

46And Nathanael said unto him, Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth? Philip saith unto him, Come and see.

47Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and saith of him, Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile!

48Nathanael saith unto him, Whence knowest thou me? Jesus answered and said unto him, Before that Philip called thee, when thou wast under the fig tree, I saw thee.

49Nathanael answered and saith unto him, Rabbi, thou art the Son of God; thou art the King of Israel.

50Jesus answered and said unto him, Because I said unto thee, I saw thee under the fig tree, believest thou? thou shalt see greater things than these.

51And he saith unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Hereafter ye shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.

John 2

1And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there:

2And both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage.

Mt 18:15-20 Forgive one another and be united

Matthew 18:15-20 (King James Version)

15Moreover if thy brother shall trespass against thee, go and tell him his fault between thee and him alone: if he shall hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother.

16But if he will not hear thee, then take with thee one or two more, that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established.

17And if he shall neglect to hear them, tell it unto the church: but if he neglect to hear the church, let him be unto thee as an heathen man and a publican.

18Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

19Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven.

20For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.

Saint Justin Cellular: Preach the Fifth Week of Lent

Today's Holy Week, the fifth Sunday of Lent, celebrated a strange and wonderful singings, Venerable mother, Mary of Egypt. It is our Lord who said the great man. Today's Holy Gospel reveals the wonderful and amazing Good News, Good News, which makes one (large). When the big man? As man has become great before God? Serving others. Thus, published today Good God through the Holy Gospel: "Whoever desires to become great among you, let him speak." That rules, rules for the heavenly country.

And yet, today's Holy Gospel reveals and tells the Good News of the priority in this world. How to become the first in order to acquire priority in this world? Again serving others. Good God says: "Who wants to be first among you shall be servant of all." Let it be a servant! That is the way to the championship. How to achieve? How to Become a God? Emulating the Lord Jesus Christ. Well for example, that sveprimera. For He, the Son of God, God, descended from heaven, became man - for what? To serve the people. Therefore, it is said in today's world the Gospel: "Son of man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life in ransom for many."

Indeed, the Lord (Christ) continually serve the people, continually serving man. Which is why he came into this world? What kind of service he makes us, a service that we can not nobody do it? It serves us constantly to save us - by whom? From sin! To save us from death to save us from hell to save us, to hell - it is His ministry to us. And who of us but He can save it? Who? Nobody! And he, unprecedented example of humility, and humiliation, and serving our neighbors, service people - all of his service to man and the human race is nothing more than removing and keeping a man from the mud to the throne of the Divine.

What we had found God becoming man in the country? He found us as slaves to death, as a odor and manure? What on earth is he doing? Istrulelog the sins of man, man istrulelog in their unjust, a man istrulelog the passions, the vices of man istrulelog. And this man he has gradually revived from the dead, saved by sin, resurrection, saved him from death, uprooted from the horrible clutches of the devil's embrace of man's body and ascended to heaven, above all the heavens, and uprestolio him, enthroned him on the throne of the Heavenly Father. That's what the service, what a feat the Lord has done for us! From the stench from the rot, from passing, that man is made immortal being, being defeated by death, being that he exalts above the Cherubim and Seraphim, and posađuje the throne of the Heavenly Father.

How to serve people? The fact that the Lord says through today's Gospel, to accomplish? Neighbor to speak, people speak using their salvation. This is the only good way and the only service, right service that we can do to one another. To serve thy salvation, and that means - what? That means his brother, his sister, always help them overcome their sin, their passion, their evil, its the devil. Try and serve his brother and his sister, and brothers and sisters to eradicate all evil, to uproot themselves from sin, to uproot themselves from what is mortal, to uproot them from themselves and throw themselves from what is of the devil, and plantations the soul of their loved ones what is of God. We serve one's neighbor only when it helps him to develop in himself the divine and good. Serve his brother and her sister when they learn the true faith, true love evanđelskoj through kindness, every good work. It is a service of the brethren. If we think we serve a brother and sister when we support their sin and their passion, on the contrary, we cherish him with his killer. It is a sin when it grows in man, it kills the soul of man, when he develops a passion in a man, destroying all the godlike, all hristoliko in it. We serve the sin of his brother's death, serve, serve his greatest enemy, the one who kills his soul.

Parents, what to do with their children? God gave them children to prepare them for eternal life, that makes them servants of God. Often parents are killing their own children, leaving them or zapuštajući. Rather than teach them a good, direct them to do any evil. I often make an excuse ma children, and child is so young to be! In fact, you parents cherish sin in our children, educate the murder of their children, they defend the devil. We read in today's newspapers about the horrible things thugs, children, and the students of twelve, fifteen, eighteen years. Miracles real, kill policemen, napastvuju. All evil and egregious acts do. Who does it? Schools without God, a school that teaches children that people have gone from a monkey, an animal. So, all in a row, and cinemas, and theaters, all which still unhappy and unfortunate Serb man rushes and runs. Well, killing the youth, killing every man who goes this route.

And the Lord announces the man to get rid of sin, to release the devil to get rid of death. So the Lord came into this world! To us He only gives us no longer be given. And we, in what we have turned your life? Our children, young people, our people, the unfortunate Serbs had given all that the Gospel of Christ requires of us. Countless dead bodies and around us. And we Christians need to know your way. The Lord tells us that only by serving your fellow man, helping him to destroy his sin in itself, to be free of sin, to be free of all sinful you have, just so doing, we really do themselves gradually become a large presence of God and serve what is great before God.

Before God, what is the most in this world? The Lord has revealed, the Lord Christ, that the soul is man's greatest value to God in this world. Human soul is worth more than all the worlds. When someone presents all the sun, your soul is more important to you. Well, that is eternal in you. If that is the soul of sin and the passions, it is difficult to you! Eternal torment and hell you ahead! Today is sweeping the world today people are inventing various sized man. What we have declared the size of a man? In fact it is a big man in only what is of God, great is only what is from Heaven. It is the soul. It is given to us for eternal life, but also the body. We are not given the body to sink into the mud to finish the tomb. No, the Lord has risen and proputio put our body to eternal life. Our resurrected bodies. Therefore, all a man of God, all the man from heaven, both body and soul, and mine and yours are from God. And with one and other and with the soul and the body, and you and I become great only in service to God. If you can not serve God, serve our neighbors.

Who are the great people in this world? In the first place the Holy Apostles. No one has served the human race more of them. They are twelve and seventy of them, all that is continuous throughout life serving his Lord Christ, serve people. They extended the business, the business of killing sin in the soul. So, their job is to save people from sin, to save people from death, to save people from hell, rescue them from hell. It is the job of the Lord Christ. The job done Holy Apostles, full of life just do so. Save the world, save, and now from heaven, for so many years and years, so many centuries and centuries. And they, they have lowered themselves in all aspects of all human sins to rescue sinners of their biggest falls. As Lord Zacchaeus saved from his hell, so they saved all the people, all sinners. And the Apostles were trying constantly to save people from sin, teaching them the virtues evanđelskih, evanđelskoj prayer, fasting. "All I was all that no matter how save when" - says the Apostle Paul. All I was getting.

No major people, brothers and sisters of the Apostles. And they were doing work of Christ, extend the work of Christ. No major people of the Saints of Christ. All are doing the same job, working Saviour rescuing people from sin, from death, from hell, from hell. Saints do it: all his life serving God, your whole life to them] is worship. Serve God - how? Serving our neighbors! Using their salvation! It (the saint) and has served us serve our salvation from Heaven helps us to free ourselves from sin, to be delivered from the devil to get rid of all evil. It is the job of every follower of Christ. And we, knowing what is the size of a man and that we are called to serve man, brother, we know only and have a large presence of God when we serve one's neighbor. Large s and then using the presence of God when you love your brothers. The first, first you only when you spend your whole life in service to others.

Look at the nature. All the big serve smaller. The sun, the greatest power in the visible nature, it serves everything. It none too small or insignificant. So also among the people: as many a man, he no longer serves our neighbors. That is Christ the Lord! His whole life was service, continuous service of man and the human race! Such a life is not only Lord Jesus Christ, not only the Holy Apostles and all the Saints, but every true Christian. Great when you serve your brother. First did you first when you're the servant of all, a true servant, wholeheartedly serves.

And in the world are very different things. You heard what the Lord told the Apostles, and through them to all Christians: "You know that the rulers rule the people and manage it. But among you not to be so. That is, all this is being done in the world frequently speak of destruction of government, often and the destruction and the man. Among you to walk that way. You see Christians in the first man his soul, what is eternal in it and it helps him. helps to cleanse his soul of sin, the impurity invisible. helping him to cleanse my soul of his killer. Every sin murderer at heart, any passion unrepentant, neispoveđena, a murderer is in your soul. rescuing them from sin, spasavaš themselves.

Example: St. Mary of Egypt. Sixty-seven years she never saw a creature living in the desert terrible, neither man nor beast, nor bird. Sixty-seven years she lived in unspeakable fasting and prayers constantly. Her feats no one knows except God and the angels of the Lord Himself. Me something, know something of it. Behold, it was great, as it served the people, as it was with people when he lived in the wilderness, she had seen sixty-seven years of a human being? Yes, undoubtedly it is just met (the Gospel) living in the desert, because her prayers are for her life, and from that day to this, one thousand (four hundred) sixty-seven years, her prayers kept the universe, her prayers help each soul as it were, anyone who wants to fight against sin, against the passions, as he fought on the ground and took the victory. And so, speak, speak my prayers constantly the human race to this day.

Hermits serve more than those in cities, serve the human race, are every man. Here the Holy Mother of God as the head of all the saints, and for her and all the holy ascetics, such as Mary of Egypt. That helps them to us constantly and every day. It is hard to follow Christ and the Saints, it is hard to be a servant to others. The thorny path of salvation, but because of the way you have countless assistants, the Saints have a marvelous and wonderful, and philanthropy, always ready to cry on every your able to come, fly down from heaven and help you. That's amazing and wonderful saint, Venerable Mother Mary of Egypt, always ready to help all of us, especially during Great Lent, when we Christians all your soul struggling against all enemies of your salvation. It helps us, always helping, you just need to approach all your heart, cry out.

Celebrating it today, we really celebrate every day, our svakonoćnu Assistants, Assistants, which takes us through salvation, and that gives us the invisible forces to win what is sinful in us, all that is bad, everything from demons, everything from the devil, and so to provide themselves with constant prayers of salvation in the eternal Kingdom of Heaven, in that world.

Her prayers, let us guide you through the Good God the Holy Post, and leads to Easter, and into the hands of the Risen Lord. That we, along with her, praise Him, the Wonderful Victor is death and all enemies of our salvation, the Risen Lord Jesus Christ. Him honor and glory now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Holiness: The Divine and Human

Holiness: The Divine and Human

Bishop Maxim Vasiljevic, Institute of theological research, PBF, 2010, p.172

The saint is a significant figure in the spirituality of the Orthodox Church. Here are not only talking about people's devotion, but also about the theology. Were directed towards him a prayer of hope, and also serves as a form of right rations jevanđelskog life. Therefore not surprising that the saint was not only central to our Church, but that was interested in many secular and scientific circles, who wanted to figure out his role in the lives of Christians. Unfortunately the incorrect interpretation of the role of saints in Christianity is not just the secular scientists (ethnologists, historians, sociologists ...), but also largely wrong approach is found in people within the Church that the Orthodox spirituality pietistic view.

In our church was part of the public who gave the answer to the role of saints in the Orthodox Church. Besides the 12-part otomnog St. Justin cell - Lives of the Saints, Dimitrije Bogdanović - images of saints and probably the most comprehensive studies to date Byzantine saint, came to us a work that can be characterized as prolegomena for the concept of holiness and the role of saints in the Orthodox Church - Holiness: divine and human. The author of this study was Bishop of Western America Maxim Dr Vasiljevic, a professor Agiologije and Patrologije at the Orthodox Theological Faculty in Belgrade and the Faculty of Theology in Libertyville. The present study is its long-standing research and teaching in our higher educational institutions. This study attempted to provide answers to today's current key questions: What is holiness, what is the liturgical vision of holiness, then what is the Bible, and what a secular notion of holiness, and what dangers exist in understanding of holiness - to answer these three key questions focused on the way you presented the orthodox understanding of holiness.

The study itself was divided into three chapters. Chapter One: Holy, holy, holiness, and the Saints in the New Testament and early church. This section is aimed at answering the first question. It is aimed at introductory remarks regarding the very concept of holiness, where the author commented on the theological and ikonološku dimension concept of holiness. Chapter Two: The importance of eschatology for understanding Holiness , trying to answer the second question. Fully shown the liturgical and eschatological perspective, and there is thought to ikonološku perspective, then discusses the issue of canonization, and the ethos of the saints in the Church. Chapter: Holiness, personality, and knowledge drugijost. This section answers the third question and not only clarifies the biblical concept of holiness, but points to a wrong understanding of the contemporary concept of holiness, focuses on our personal relationship with the saints, and indicates the global nature of eternal holiness.

This study represents a synthesis of orthodox notions of holiness . Our general public are certainly necessary case studies that make her rastumačile main guidelines of a particular theme, which would have a thread with current scientific developments and thus gave birth in the right way you want answers. The aim of this study is the explanation of the terms of holiness as a cultural as well as with national religious and popular aspects in order to come to the church concept of sanctity, at the same time, rejecting-Orthodox interpretations that are actually hostile to Orthodox piety. The objective of this study is fully realized, so it's not just students reading theology, but also any curious reader who intriguing issue of holiness.

Russian Orthodox Church In America Daily Readings For Thursday, 14 April

Today's commemorated feasts and saints...

St. Martin the Confessor, Pope of Rome (655). Martyrs Anthony, John and Eustathius of Vilnius (Lithuania—1347). Martyr Ardalion the Actor (4th c.). Martyr Azades the Eunuch and 1,000 Martyrs of Persia (ca. 341).

St Martin the Confessor the Pope of Rome

Saint Martin the Confessor, Pope of Rome, was a native of the Tuscany region of Italy. He received a fine education and entered into the clergy of the Roman Church. After the death of Pope Theodore I (642-649), Martin was chosen to succeed him.

At this time the peace of the Church was disturbed by the Monothelite heresy (the false doctrine that in Christ there is only one will. He has a divine, and a human will). The endless disputes of the Monothelites with the Orthodox took place in all levels of the population. Even the emperor Constans (641-668) and Patriarch Paul of Constantinople (641-654) were adherents of the Monothelite heresy. The emperor Constans II published the heretical "Pattern of Faith" (Typos), obligatory for all the population. In it all further disputes were forbidden.

The heretical "Pattern of Faith" was received at Rome in the year 649. St Martin, a firm supporter of Orthodoxy, convened the Lateran Council at Rome to condemn the Monothelite heresy. At the same time St Martin sent a letter to Patriarch Paul, persuading him to return to the Orthodox confession of faith. The enraged emperor ordered the military commander Olympius to bring St Martin to trial. But Olympius feared the clergy and the people of Rome who had descended upon the Council, and he sent a soldier to murder the holy hierarch. When the assassin approached St Martin, he was blinded. The terrified Olympius fled to Sicily and was soon killed in battle.

In 654 the emperor sent another military commander, Theodore, to Rome. He accused St Martin of being in secret correspondence with the enemies of the Empire, the Saracens, and of blaspheming the Most Holy Theotokos, and of uncanonically assuming the papal throne.

Despite the proofs offered by the Roman clergy and laity of St Martin's innocence, the military commander Theodore with a detachment of soldiers seized St Martin by night and took him to Naxos, one of the Cyclades islands in the Aegean Sea. St Martin spent an entire year on this almost unpopulated island, suffering deprivation and abuse from the guards. Then they sent the exhausted confessor to Constantinople for trial.

They carried the sick man on a stretcher, but the judges callously ordered him to stand up and answer their questions. The soldiers propped up the saint, who was weakened by illness. False witnesses came forward slandering the saint and accusing him of treasonous relations with the Saracens. The biased judges did not even bother to hear the saint's defense. In sorrow he said, "The Lord knows what a great kindness you would show me if you would deliver me quickly over to death."

After such a trial they brought the saint out in tattered clothes to a jeering crowd. They shouted, "Anathema to Pope Martin!" But those who knew the holy Pope was suffering unjustly, withdrew in tears. Finally the sentence was announced: St Martin was to be deposed from his rank and executed. They bound the half-naked saint with chains and dragged him to prison, where they locked him up with thieves. These were more merciful to the saint than the heretics.

In the midst of all this the emperor went to the dying Patriarch Paul and told him of the trial of St Martin. He turned away from the emperor and said, "Woe is me! This is another reason for my judgment." He asked that St Martin's torments be stopped. The emperor again sent a notary and other persons to the saint in prison to interrogate him. The saint answered, "Even if they cripple me, I will not have relations with the Church of Constantinople while it remains in its evil doctrines." The torturers were astonished at the confessor's boldness, and they commuted his death sentence to exile at Cherson in the Crimea.

There the saint died, exhausted by sickness, hunger and deprivations on September 16, 655. He was buried outside the city in the Blachernae church of the Most Holy Theotokos, and later the relics of the holy confessor Martin were transferred to Rome.

The Monothelite heresy was condemned at the Sixth Ecumenical Council in 680.

Martyr Anthony of Vilnius, Lithuania

The Holy Martyrs Anthony, John, and Eustathius were brothers who suffered for Christ under the Lithuanian Great Prince Olgerd (1345-1377). The prince was married to the Orthodox princess Maria Yaroslavna (+ 1346). He was baptized and during his wife's lifetime he allowed the preaching of Christianity. Two brothers, Nezhilo and Kumets, received holy Baptism from the priest Nestor, and they received the names Anthony and John. And at the request of Maria Yaroslavna an Orthodox church was built at Vilnius (Vilna).

After the death of his spouse, Prince Olgerd began to support the pagan priests of the fire-worshippers, who started a persecution against Christians. Sts John and Anthony endeavored not to flaunt their Christianity, but they did not observe pagan customs. They did not cut their hair as the pagans did, and on fastdays they did not eat forbidden foods.

The prince soon became suspicious of the brothers, so he interrogated them and they confessed themselves Christians. Then he demanded that they eat meat (it was a fast day). The holy brothers refused, and the prince locked them up in prison. The brothers spent an entire year behind bars. John took fright at the impending tortures and declared that he would obey all the demands of the Great Prince. The delighted Olgerd released the brothers and brought them to himself.

But Anthony did not betray Christ. When he refused to eat meat on a fast day, the prince again locked him up in prison and subjected him to brutal tortures. The other brother remained free, but both Christians and pagans regarded him as a traitor and would not associate with him.

Repenting of his sin, John went to the priest Nestor and entreated him to ask his brother to forgive him. "When he openly confesses Christ, we will be reconciled," Anthony replied. Once, while serving the prince at the bath, St John spoke privately with him about his reconciliation with the Church. Olgerd did not display any anger and said that he could believe in Christ, but must conduct himself like all the pagans. Then St John confessed himself a Christian in the presence of numerous courtiers. They beat him fiercely with rods and sent him to his brother in prison. The martyrs met with joy, and received the Holy Mysteries that same day.

Many people went to the prison to see the new confessor. The brothers converted many to Christ by their preaching. The prison was transformed into a Christian school. The frightened pagan priests demanded the execution of the brothers, but they did not fear death.

On the morning of April 14, 1347 the Martyr Anthony was hanged on a tree after receiving the Holy Mysteries. This oak, which the pagans considered sacred, became truly sacred for Orthodox Christians.

The pagan priests who hoped that Christian preaching would stop with the death of St Anthony, were disappointed. A multitude of the people gathered before the walls of the prison where St John was being held. On April 24, 1347 they strangled him and hanged his dead body upon the same oak. The venerable bodies of both martyrs were buried by Christians in the church of St Nicholas the Wonderworker.

A third sufferer for Christ was their relative Kruglets. At Baptism the priest Nestor named him Eustathius. Kruglets stood out because of his comeliness, valor and bravery, but even more because of his mind and virtue of soul. A favorite of Olgerd, he could count on a very promising future. However, he also refused to eat meat at the festal table. St Eustathius openly declared that he was a Christian and would not eat meat because of the Nativity Fast.

They began to beat him with iron rods, but the youth did not make a sound. The prince tried refining the torture. Olgerd gave orders to strip the martyr naked, take him out on the street and to pour icy water in his mouth. But this did not break his spirit. Then they broke his ankle bones, and ripped the hair and skin from his head, and cut off his ears and nose. St Eustathius endured the torments with such gladness and courage, that the very torturers themselves were astounded by the divine power which strengthened him. The martyr Eustathius was sentenced to death and hanged on the same oak where Sts John and Anthony received a martyr's death (December 13, 1347).

For three days no one was permitted to take down the body of the martyr, and a column of cloud protected it from birds and beasts of prey. A church was later built on the hill where the holy martyrs suffered. The trinity of venerable passion bearers glorified the true God worshipped in the Holy Trinity, Father and Son and Holy Spirit. The church was dedicated to the Most Holy Trinity. The altar table was built on the stump of the sacred oak on which the martyrs died.

Soon their relics were found to be incorrupt. In 1364 Patriarch Philotheus of Constantinople (1354-1355, 1364-1376) sent a cross with the relics of the holy martyrs to St Sergius of Radonezh (September 25). The Church established the celebration of all three martyrs on April 14.

The holy martyrs were of immense significance for all the Western frontier. Vilnius's monastery of the Holy Trinity, where the holy relics are kept, became a stronghold of Orthodoxy on this frontier. In 1915 during the invasion of the Germans, these relics were taken to Moscow.

The relics of the holy passion-bearers were returned to the Vilnius Holy Spirit monastery in 1946. The commemoration of their return (July 13) is solemnly observed at the monastery each year.

By the diligence of all your souls you put human cleverness to death.

And so attaining the victory of true honor,

Unceasingly pray to our Master for us all.

Valiant and honorable combatants,

You firmly and courageously suffered torments for the faith,

You have died for the life of all for the Master.

Martyr Ardalion the Actor

The Holy Martyr Ardalion suffered for Christ under the emperor Maximian Galerius (305-311). St Ardalion was a talented actor.

Once, he played the role of a Christian. In the play, the actor at first refused to offer sacrifice to idols, but then consented to renounce Christ. Suddenly the saint ordered everyone to be quiet and declared that he actually was a Christian.

St Ardalion continued to confess his faith in Christ. Then the governor ordered the martyr to be thrown onto a red-hot iron grill. So St Ardalion attained a martyr's crown.

Martyr Azades (Azat) the Eunuch of Persia

Saint Azades (Azat) was a wealthy man who served in the household of King Shapur II of Persia, and enjoyed his confidence. He was arrested for professing Christianity, and then suffered martyrdom with 1000 other Christians. After this, the king repented and ordered an end to the persecution of Christians.

Icon of the Mother of God of Vilnius

The Vilnius (Vilna) Icon of the Mother of God was painted by the holy Evangelist Luke. For a long time it was in the family of the Greek emperors at Constantinople. In 1472 Sophia Paleologina, wife of the Moscow Great Prince Ivan III (1462-1505), transferred the icon to Moscow.

In 1495 the Great Prince blessed his daughter Elena with this icon before giving her in marriage to the Lithuanian king Alexander. The Church celebrates the transfer of this icon to Vilnius on February 15.

Later, the holy icon was placed in the church of St John the Forerunner, in which Princess Elena was buried. Afterwards, they transferred the icon to Vilnius's HolyTrinity monastery.

The Vilnius icon is also commemorated on February 15.

Daily Prayer Before Reading The Scriptures:

Illumine our hearts, O Master Who lovest mankind, with the pure light of Thy divine knowledge. Open the eyes of our mind to the understanding of Thy gospel teachings. Implant also in us the fear of Thy blessed commandments, that trampling down all carnal desires, we may enter upon a spiritual manner of living, both thinking and doing such things as are well-pleasing unto Thee. For Thou art the illumination of our souls and bodies, O Christ our God, and unto Thee we ascribe glory, together with Thy Father, Who is from everlasting, and Thine all-holy, good, and life-creating Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Scriptural Readings:

Isaiah 65:8-17 (6th Hour)

8 Thus says the Lord: “As the new wine is found in the cluster, And one says, ‘Do not destroy it, For a blessing is in it,’ So will I do for My servants’ sake, That I may not destroy them all.

9 I will bring forth descendants from Jacob, And from Judah an heir of My mountains; My elect shall inherit it, And My servants shall dwell there.

10 Sharon shall be a fold of flocks, And the Valley of Achor a place for herds to lie down, For My people who have sought Me.

11 “But you are those who forsake the Lord, Who forget My holy mountain, Who prepare a table for Gad, And who furnish a drink offering for Meni.

12 Therefore I will number you for the sword, And you shall all bow down to the slaughter; Because, when I called, you did not answer; When I spoke, you did not hear, But did evil before My eyes, And chose that in which I do not delight.”

13 Therefore thus says the Lord God: “Behold, My servants shall eat, But you shall be hungry; Behold, My servants shall drink, But you shall be thirsty; Behold, My servants shall rejoice, But you shall be ashamed;

14 Behold, My servants shall sing for joy of heart, But you shall cry for sorrow of heart, And wail for grief of spirit.

15 You shall leave your name as a curse to My chosen; For the Lord God will slay you, And call His servants by another name;

16 So that he who blesses himself in the earth Shall bless himself in the God of truth; And he who swears in the earth Shall swear by the God of truth; Because the former troubles are forgotten, And because they are hidden from My eyes.

17 “For behold, I create new heavens and a new earth; And the former shall not be remembered or come to mind.

Genesis 46:1-7 (Vespers, 1st Reading)

1 So Israel took his journey with all that he had, and came to Beersheba, and offered sacrifices to the God of his father Isaac.

2 Then God spoke to Israel in the visions of the night, and said, “Jacob, Jacob!” And he said, “Here I am.”

3 So He said, “I am God, the God of your father; do not fear to go down to Egypt, for I will make of you a great nation there.

4 “I will go down with you to Egypt, and I will also surely bring you up again; and Joseph will put his hand on your eyes.”

5 Then Jacob arose from Beersheba; and the sons of Israel carried their father Jacob, their little ones, and their wives, in the carts which Pharaoh had sent to carry him.

6 So they took their livestock and their goods, which they had acquired in the land of Canaan, and went to Egypt, Jacob and all his descendants with him.

7 His sons and his sons’ sons, his daughters and his sons’ daughters, and all his descendants he brought with him to Egypt.

Proverbs 23:15-24:5 (Vespers, 2nd Reading)

15 My son, if your heart is wise, My heart will rejoice—indeed, I myself;

16 Yes, my inmost being will rejoice When your lips speak right things.

17 Do not let your heart envy sinners, But be zealous for the fear of the Lord all the day;

18 For surely there is a hereafter, And your hope will not be cut off.

19 Hear, my son, and be wise; And guide your heart in the way.

20 Do not mix with winebibbers, Or with gluttonous eaters of meat;

21 For the drunkard and the glutton will come to poverty, And drowsiness will clothe a man with rags.

22 Listen to your father who begot you, And do not despise your mother when she is old.

23 Buy the truth, and do not sell it, Also wisdom and instruction and understanding.

24 The father of the righteous will greatly rejoice, And he who begets a wise child will delight in him.

25 Let your father and your mother be glad, And let her who bore you rejoice.

26 My son, give me your heart, And let your eyes observe my ways.

27 For a harlot is a deep pit, And a seductress is a narrow well.

28 She also lies in wait as for a victim, And increases the unfaithful among men.

29 Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has contentions? Who has complaints? Who has wounds without cause? Who has redness of eyes?

30 Those who linger long at the wine, Those who go in search of mixed wine.

31 Do not look on the wine when it is red, When it sparkles in the cup, When it swirls around smoothly;

32 At the last it bites like a serpent, And stings like a viper.

33 Your eyes will see strange things, And your heart will utter perverse things.

34 Yes, you will be like one who lies down in the midst of the sea, Or like one who lies at the top of the mast, saying:

35 “They have struck me, but I was not hurt; They have beaten me, but I did not feel it. When shall I awake, that I may seek another drink?”

1 Do not be envious of evil men, Nor desire to be with them;

2 For their heart devises violence, And their lips talk of troublemaking.

3 Through wisdom a house is built, And by understanding it is established;

4 By knowledge the rooms are filled With all precious and pleasant riches.

5 A wise man is strong, Yes, a man of knowledge increases strength;
