Psalm 124

Psalm 124

1If it had not been the Lord who was on our side—let Israel now say—

2if it had not been the Lord who was on our side, when our enemies attacked us,

3then they would have swallowed us up alive, when their anger was kindled against us;

4then the flood would have swept us away, the torrent would have gone over us;

5then over us would have gone the raging waters.

6Blessed be the Lord, who has not given us as prey to their teeth.

7We have escaped like a bird from the snare of the fowlers; the snare is broken, and we have escaped.

8Our help is in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth.

Genesis 8:1-19

Genesis 8:1-19

8But God remembered Noah and all the wild animals and all the domestic animals that were with him in the ark. And God made a wind blow over the earth, and the waters subsided; 2the fountains of the deep and the windows of the heavens were closed, the rain from the heavens was restrained, 3and the waters gradually receded from the earth. At the end of one hundred fifty days the waters had abated;

4and in the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, the ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat. 5The waters continued to abate until the tenth month; in the tenth month, on the first day of the month, the tops of the mountains appeared.

6At the end of forty days Noah opened the window of the ark that he had made 7and sent out the raven; and it went to and fro until the waters were dried up from the earth. 8Then he sent out the dove from him, to see if the waters had subsided from the face of the ground; 9but the dove found no place to set its foot, and it returned to him to the ark, for the waters were still on the face of the whole earth. So he put out his hand and took it and brought it into the ark with him. 10He waited another seven days, and again he sent out the dove from the ark; 11and the dove came back to him in the evening, and there in its beak was a freshly plucked olive leaf; so Noah knew that the waters had subsided from the earth. 12Then he waited another seven days, and sent out the dove; and it did not return to him any more.

13In the six hundred first year, in the first month, the first day of the month, the waters were dried up from the earth; and Noah removed the covering of the ark, and looked, and saw that the face of the ground was drying. 14In the second month, on the twenty-seventh day of the month, the earth was dry.

15Then God said to Noah, 16“Go out of the ark, you and your wife, and your sons and your sons’ wives with you. 17Bring out with you every living thing that is with you of all flesh—birds and animals and every creeping thing that creeps on the earth—so that they may abound on the earth, and be fruitful and multiply on the earth.” 18So Noah went out with his sons and his wife and his sons’ wives. 19And every animal, every creeping thing, and every bird, everything that moves on the earth, went out of the ark by families.

Romans 6:1-11

Romans 6:1-11

6What then are we to say? Should we continue in sin in order that grace may abound? 2By no means! How can we who died to sin go on living in it? 3Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4Therefore we have been buried with him by baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. 5For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. 6We know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be destroyed, and we might no longer be enslaved to sin. 7For whoever has died is freed from sin. 8But if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. 9We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. 10The death he died, he died to sin, once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God. 11So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.

Monday of Ad Te Levavi (Advent 1)

Noah

Read today's Higher Things Daily Reflection

November 29, 2010 - Monday of the First Week of Advent

Today's Reading: Jeremiah 23:5-8

Daily Lectionary: Isaiah 5:1-25; 1 Peter 2:1-12

In His days Judah will be saved, And Israel will dwell safely; Now this is His name by which He will be called: THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS. (Jeremiah 23:6)

In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. The Branch of Jesse's stem. That's King David's family tree. Way down the line comes the Branch who is “THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.” Jesus, born of Mary who was of the house of David, betrothed to Joseph, who was also of the house of David. As true God, Jesus is David's Lord, but as true man, He is of the house of David.

But look at that name! THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS. Do you have any righteousness? On your own, no. There's nothing in you, but sin and death. Hating God. Hating your neighbor. Breaking the commandments. Living UN-righteously before God. Not treasuring God's Word. Not loving and serving others. Wanting everything else, but what the Lord gives you. Loving yourself most of all. Definitely no righteousness there.

But do you have any righteousness? What is this Branch called―-THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS. That means the Lord is your righteousness. Jesus is your righteousness. His perfect life is your righteousness. His baptism, in which He took on your sins, is your righteousness. His saving death where He was crowned with thorns is your righteousness. His resurrection from the dead is your righteousness. All that Jesus is and has done is your being right before God―your righteousness.

The Good News of Advent is that the Lord doesn't leave us wallowing around in our sins trying to get some righteousness on our own. He comes Himself to be our righteousness. And you are saved and dwell securely in Him. In the Name of Jesus. Amen.

The righteousness, O Christ, Alone can cover me; No righteousness avails Save that which is of Thee. To whom save Thee, Who canst alone For sin atone, Lord, shall I flee? (LSB 565:5)

Collect

Stir up Your power, O Lord, and come, that by Your protection we may be rescued from the threatening perils of our sins and saved by Your mighty deliverance; for You live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

First Reading: Is. 5:1-25

The Vineyard of the LORD Destroyed

1Let me sing for my beloved

my love song concerning his vineyard:My beloved had(A) a vineyard

on a very fertile hill. 2He dug it and cleared it of stones,

and planted it with(B) choice vines;he built a watchtower in the midst of it,

and hewed out a wine vat in it;and(C) he looked for it to yield grapes,

but it yielded wild grapes.

3And now, O inhabitants of Jerusalem

and men of Judah, judge between me and my vineyard. 4(D) What more was there to do for my vineyard,

that I have not done in it?(E) When I looked for it to yield grapes,

why did it yield wild grapes?

5And now I will tell you

what I will do to my vineyard.I will remove(F) its hedge,

and it shall be devoured;[a](G) I will break down its wall,

and it shall be trampled down. 6I will make it a waste;

it shall not be pruned or hoed,

and(H) briers and thorns shall grow up;(I) I will also command the clouds

that they rain no rain upon it.

7(J) For the vineyard of the LORD of hosts

is the house of Israel, and the men of Judah

are his pleasant planting;and he looked for justice,

but behold, bloodshed;[b]for righteousness,

but behold, an outcry![c]

Woe to the Wicked

8Woe to those who(K) join house to house,

who add field to field, until there is no more room,

and you are made to dwell alone

in the midst of the land. 9The LORD of hosts has sworn in my hearing:(L) "Surely many houses shall be desolate,

large and beautiful houses, without inhabitant. 10(M) For ten acres[d] of vineyard shall yield but one bath,

and a(N) homer of seed shall yield but an ephah."[e]

11Woe to those who(O) rise early in the morning,

that they may run after strong drink, who tarry late into the evening

as wine inflames them! 12(P) They have lyre and harp,

tambourine and flute and wine at their feasts,(Q) but they do not regard the deeds of the LORD,

or see the work of his hands.

13Therefore my people go into exile

(R) for lack of knowledge;[f]their(S) honored men go hungry,[g]

and their multitude is parched with thirst. 14Therefore Sheol has(T) enlarged its appetite

and opened(U) its mouth beyond measure, and the nobility of Jerusalem[h] and her multitude will go down,

her revelers and he who(V) exults in her. 15(W) Man is humbled, and each one is brought low,

and the eyes of the haughty[i] are brought low. 16(X) But the LORD of hosts is exalted[j] in justice,

and the Holy God shows himself holy in righteousness. 17Then shall the lambs graze(Y) as in their pasture,

and(Z) nomads shall eat among the ruins of the rich.

18Woe to those who draw iniquity with(AA) cords of falsehood,

who draw sin as with cart ropes, 19who say:(AB) "Let him be quick,

let him speed his work

that we may see it;let the counsel of the Holy One of Israel draw near,

and let it come, that we may know it!" 20Woe to(AC) those who call evil good

and good evil,(AD) who put darkness for light

and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet

and sweet for bitter! 21Woe to those who are(AE) wise in their own eyes,

and shrewd in their own sight! 22Woe to those who are(AF) heroes at drinking wine,

and valiant men in mixing strong drink, 23who(AG) acquit the guilty for a bribe,

and deprive the innocent of his right!

24Therefore,(AH) as the tongue of fire devours the stubble,

and as dry grass sinks down in the flame,so(AI) their root will be(AJ) as rottenness,

and their blossom go up like dust;for they have(AK) rejected the law of the LORD of hosts,

and have(AL) despised the word of the Holy One of Israel. 25Therefore(AM) the anger of the LORD was kindled against his people,

and he stretched out his hand against them and struck them,

and(AN) the mountains quaked;and their corpses were(AO) as refuse

in the midst of the streets.(AP) For all this his anger has not turned away,

and his hand is stretched out still.

Second Reading: 1 Pt. 2:1-12

A Living Stone and a Holy People

1(A) So put away all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander. 2(B) Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual(C) milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation— 3if indeed you have(D) tasted that the Lord is good.

4As you come to him, a living stone(E) rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious, 5(F) you yourselves like living stones are being built up as(G) a spiritual house, to be(H) a holy priesthood,(I) to offer spiritual sacrifices(J) acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 6For it stands in Scripture:

(K) "Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone,

a cornerstone chosen and precious,(L) and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame."

7So the honor is for you who(M) believe, but for those who(N) do not believe,

"The stone that the builders rejected

has become the cornerstone,"[a]

8and

(O) "A stone of stumbling,

and a rock of offense."

They stumble because they disobey the word,(P) as they were destined to do.

9But you are(Q) a chosen race,(R) a royal(S) priesthood,(T) a holy nation,(U) a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you(V) out of darkness into(W) his marvelous light. 10(X) Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

11Beloved, I urge you(Y) as sojourners and exiles(Z) to abstain from the passions of the flesh,(AA) which wage war against your soul. 12(AB) Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable, so that when they speak against you as evildoers,(AC) they may see your good deeds and glorify God on(AD) the day of visitation.

Monday Father Reading

"Consider what care and diligence they showed who took part in the ancient sacrifices. Look how they constantly gave themselves to cleansing and atonement. But you are drawing near to that Victim whom the very angels worship in awe and wonder. How will you stand before the judgment seat of Christ, if you dare to approach His very Body with hands and lips that are polluted? You would not dare to kiss the feet of a king with a mouth reeking of foulness, yet with a foul and reeking soul would you kiss the King of heaven? What a monstrous thing!" [St. John Chrysostom. "Homily III on Ephesians 1." 5th Century]
