“Max Weber argued, in his seminal lecture Wissenschaft als Beruf 1919 (Science as a profession (or: vocation)) that ‘the fate of our times is characterized by rationalization and intellectualization and, above all, by the “disenchantment of the world”.’
“The English word connotes two points Weber wanted to stress: we no longer experience the world as imbued with aspects that have emotional significance for us, and we experience this with a sense of disappointment or loss. Weber took this to be a significant aspect of modern rationality in science and society.”
