LITANY: Latin litania and the Ancient Greek: λιτανεία (litaneía); supplication
A litany is a prayer of repetitious supplication, prayed in congregations or privately; in the Litany of Saints, multiple saints are called upon and with each saint named, the response “pray for us” is made. The repetition has the effect of deepening the prayer into contemplation, and quietening the soul to stillness.
The celebrant and congregation processed together, praying the Litany as they walked.
Popular Litanies:
The Litany of Saints
The Litany of the Sacred Heart of Jesus
The Litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary
The Litany of Humility
