Papal preacher will explore Eastern doctors of the Church in Lenten sermons

In his annual Lenten sermons, the preacher of the pontifical household will draw on the insights of four doctors of the Eastern Church: Sts. Athanasius, Basil, Gregory Nazienzen, and Gregory Nyssen.
Father Raniero Cantalamessa will preach his four sermons on consecutive Fridays, beginning on March 9. The Holy Father and leaders of the Roman Curia attend the meditations, which are preached in the Redemptoris Mater chapel of the apostolic palace. (There is no Lenten sermon on March 2 because the Pope and top curial officials are making the annual Lenten Retreat.)
In preparation for the Year of Faith, Father Cantalamessa said, he wishes to explore the insights of the Eastern doctors on the fundamentals of Christian doctrine. The papal preacher cited the insight of Pope Paul VI that "returning to the Fathers of the Church is part of that return to the roots of Christianity without which it would be impossible to undertake biblical renewal, liturgical reform and the new theological research endorsed by Vatican Council II.”
