Psalm 50
Psalm 50
1The mighty one, God the Lord, speaks and summons the earth from the rising of the sun to its setting.
2Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, God shines forth.
3Our God comes and does not keep silence, before him is a devouring fire, and a mighty tempest all around him.
4He calls to the heavens above and to the earth, that he may judge his people:
5“Gather to me my faithful ones, who made a covenant with me by sacrifice!”
6The heavens declare his righteousness, for God himself is judge. Selah
7“Hear, O my people, and I will speak, O Israel, I will testify against you. I am God, your God.
8Not for your sacrifices do I rebuke you; your burnt offerings are continually before me.
9I will not accept a bull from your house, or goats from your folds.
10For every wild animal of the forest is mine, the cattle on a thousand hills.
11I know all the birds of the air, and all that moves in the field is mine.
12“If I were hungry, I would not tell you, for the world and all that is in it is mine.
13Do I eat the flesh of bulls, or drink the blood of goats?
14Offer to God a sacrifice of thanksgiving, and pay your vows to the Most High.
15Call on me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify me.”
16But to the wicked God says: “What right have you to recite my statutes, or take my covenant on your lips?
17For you hate discipline, and you cast my words behind you.
18You make friends with a thief when you see one, and you keep company with adulterers.
19“You give your mouth free rein for evil, and your tongue frames deceit.
20You sit and speak against your kin; you slander your own mother’s child.
21These things you have done and I have been silent; you thought that I was one just like yourself. But now I rebuke you, and lay the charge before you.
22“Mark this, then, you who forget God, or I will tear you apart, and there will be no one to deliver.
23Those who bring thanksgiving as their sacrifice honor me; to those who go the right way I will show the salvation of God.”
Amos 5:12-24
Amos 5:12-2412For I know how many are your transgressions, and how great are your sins— you who afflict the righteous, who take a bribe, and push aside the needy in the gate. 13Therefore the prudent will keep silent in such a time; for it is an evil time. 14Seek good and not evil, that you may live; and so the Lord, the God of hosts, will be with you, just as you have said. 15Hate evil and love good, and establish justice in the gate; it may be that the Lord, the God of hosts, will be gracious to the remnant of Joseph.
16Therefore thus says the Lord, the God of hosts, the Lord: In all the squares there shall be wailing; and in all the streets they shall say, “Alas! alas!” They shall call the farmers to mourning, and those skilled in lamentation, to wailing; 17in all the vineyards there shall be wailing, for I will pass through the midst of you, says the Lord. 18Alas for you who desire the day of the Lord! Why do you want the day of the Lord? It is darkness, not light; 19as if someone fled from a lion, and was met by a bear; or went into the house and rested a hand against the wall, and was bitten by a snake. 20Is not the day of the Lord darkness, not light, and gloom with no brightness in it?
21I hate, I despise your festivals, and I take no delight in your solemn assemblies. 22Even though you offer me your burnt offerings and grain offerings, I will not accept them; and the offerings of well-being of your fatted animals I will not look upon. 23Take away from me the noise of your songs; I will not listen to the melody of your harps. 24But let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an everflowing stream.
Luke 19:11-27
Luke 19:11-27
11As they were listening to this, he went on to tell a parable, because he was near Jerusalem, and because they supposed that the kingdom of God was to appear immediately. 12So he said, “A nobleman went to a distant country to get royal power for himself and then return. 13He summoned ten of his slaves, and gave them ten pounds, and said to them, ‘Do business with these until I come back.’ 14But the citizens of his country hated him and sent a delegation after him, saying, ‘We do not want this man to rule over us.’ 15When he returned, having received royal power, he ordered these slaves, to whom he had given the money, to be summoned so that he might find out what they had gained by trading. 16The first came forward and said, ‘Lord, your pound has made ten more pounds.’ 17He said to him, ‘Well done, good slave! Because you have been trustworthy in a very small thing, take charge of ten cities.’ 18Then the second came, saying, ‘Lord, your pound has made five pounds.’ 19He said to him, ‘And you, rule over five cities.’ 20Then the other came, saying, ‘Lord, here is your pound. I wrapped it up in a piece of cloth, 21for I was afraid of you, because you are a harsh man; you take what you did not deposit, and reap what you did not sow.’ 22He said to him, ‘I will judge you by your own words, you wicked slave! You knew, did you, that I was a harsh man, taking what I did not deposit and reaping what I did not sow? 23Why then did you not put my money into the bank? Then when I returned, I could have collected it with interest.’ 24He said to the bystanders, ‘Take the pound from him and give it to the one who has ten pounds.’ 25(And they said to him, ‘Lord, he has ten pounds!’) 26‘I tell you, to all those who have, more will be given; but from those who have nothing, even what they have will be taken away. 27But as for these enemies of mine who did not want me to be king over them—bring them here and slaughter them in my presence.’”

Psalm 142
Psalm 142
1With my voice I cry to the Lord; with my voice I make supplication to the Lord.
2I pour out my complaint before him; I tell my trouble before him.
3When my spirit is faint, you know my way. In the path where I walk they have hidden a trap for me.
4Look on my right hand and see— there is no one who takes notice of me; no refuge remains to me; no one cares for me.
5I cry to you, O Lord; I say, “You are my refuge, my portion in the land of the living.”
6Give heed to my cry, for I am brought very low. Save me from my persecutors, for they are too strong for me.
7Bring me out of prison, so that I may give thanks to your name. The righteous will surround me, for you will deal bountifully with me.
Habakkuk 3:17-19
Habakkuk 3:17-1917Though the fig tree does not blossom, and no fruit is on the vines; though the produce of the olive fails and the fields yield no food; though the flock is cut off from the fold and there is no herd in the stalls, 18yet I will rejoice in the Lord; I will exult in the God of my salvation. 19God, the Lord, is my strength; he makes my feet like the feet of a deer, and makes me tread upon the heights. First Reading: Jer. 3:6-4:2
Faithless Israel Called to Repentance
6The LORD said to me in the days of(A) King Josiah: "Have you seen what she did, that faithless one, Israel,(B) how she went up on every high hill and under every green tree, and there(C) played the whore? 7And I thought, 'After she has done all this she will return to me,' but she did not return, and her treacherous(D) sister Judah saw it. 8She saw that for all the adulteries of that faithless one, Israel,(E) I had sent her away with(F) a decree of divorce.(G) Yet her treacherous sister Judah did not fear, but she too went(H) and played the whore. 9Because she took her whoredom lightly, she polluted the land, committing adultery with(I) stone and tree. 10Yet for all this her treacherous sister Judah did not return to me(J) with her whole heart, but in pretense, declares the LORD."
11And the LORD said to me,(K) "Faithless Israel has shown herself more righteous than treacherous Judah. 12Go, and proclaim these words toward(L) the north, and say,
(M) "'Return, faithless Israel,
declares the LORD.I will not look on you in anger,
for(N) I am merciful,
declares the LORD;(O) I will not be angry forever. 13(P) Only acknowledge your guilt,
that you rebelled against the LORD your Godand scattered your favors among foreigners under(Q) every green tree,
and that you have not obeyed my voice,
declares the LORD. 14(R) Return, O faithless children,
declares the LORD;
(S) for I am your master;I will take you, one from a city and two from a family,
and I will bring you to Zion.
15"'And(T) I will give you shepherds after my own heart,(U) who will feed you with knowledge and understanding. 16And when you have multiplied and increased in the land, in those days, declares the LORD, they shall no more say, "The ark of the covenant of the LORD." It shall not come to mind or be remembered or missed; it shall not be made again. 17At that time Jerusalem shall be called the throne of the LORD,(V) and all nations shall gather to it,(W) to the presence of the LORD in Jerusalem, and they shall no more stubbornly follow their own evil heart. 18(X) In those days the house of Judah shall join the house of Israel, and together they shall come from the land(Y) of the north to(Z) the land that I gave your fathers for a heritage.
19"'I said,
How I would set you among my sons, and give you a pleasant land,
a heritage most beautiful of all nations. And I thought you would(AA) call me, My Father,
and would not turn from following me. 20(AB) Surely, as a treacherous wife leaves her husband,
so have you been treacherous to me, O house of Israel,
declares the LORD.'"
21A voice on the(AC) bare heights is heard,
(AD) the weeping and pleading of Israel’s sonsbecause they have perverted their way;
they have forgotten the LORD their God. 22(AE) "Return, O faithless sons;
(AF) I will heal your faithlessness.""Behold, we come to you,
for you are the LORD our God. 23Truly(AG) the hills are a delusion,
the orgies[a] on the mountains.(AH) Truly in the LORD our God
is the salvation of Israel.
24"But from our youth the shameful thing has devoured all for which our fathers labored, their flocks and their herds, their sons and their daughters. 25(AI) Let us lie down in our shame, and let our dishonor cover us. For(AJ) we have sinned against the LORD our God, we and our fathers, from our youth even to this day, and we have not obeyed the voice of the LORD our God." 1"If you return, O Israel,
declares the LORD,
(AK) to me you should return. If you remove your detestable things from my presence,
(AL) and do not waver, 2(AM) and if you swear, 'As the LORD lives,'
in truth, in justice, and in righteousness, then(AN) nations shall bless themselves in him,
(AO) and in him shall they glory."

The Parable of the Wedding Feast
1And again Jesus(A) spoke to them in parables, saying, 2(B) "The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who gave(C) a wedding feast for his son, 3and(D) sent his servants[a] to call those who were invited to the wedding feast, but they would not come. 4(E) Again he sent other servants, saying, 'Tell those who are invited, See, I have prepared my(F) dinner,(G) my oxen and my fat calves have been slaughtered, and everything is ready. Come to the wedding feast.' 5But(H) they paid no attention and went off, one to his farm, another to his business, 6while the rest seized his servants,(I) treated them shamefully, and(J) killed them. 7The king was angry, and he sent his troops and(K) destroyed those murderers and burned their city. 8Then he said to his servants, 'The wedding feast is ready, but those invited were not(L) worthy. 9Go therefore to the main roads and invite to the wedding feast as many as you find.' 10And those servants went out into the roads and(M) gathered all whom they found, both bad and good. So the wedding hall was filled with guests.
11"But when the king came in to look at the guests, he saw there(N) a man who had no wedding garment. 12And he said to him,(O) 'Friend, how did you get in here without a wedding garment?' And he was speechless. 13Then the king said to the attendants, 'Bind him hand and foot and(P) cast him into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.' 14For many are(Q) called, but few are chosen."
Paying Taxes to Caesar
15(R) Then the Pharisees went and plotted how(S) to entangle him in his words. 16And they sent(T) their disciples to him, along with(U) the Herodians, saying, "Teacher,(V) we know that you are true and teach(W) the way of God truthfully, and you do not care about anyone’s opinion, for(X) you are not swayed by appearances.[b] 17Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay(Y) taxes to(Z) Caesar, or not?" 18But Jesus, aware of their malice, said, "Why(AA) put me to the test, you hypocrites? 19Show me the coin for the tax." And they brought him a denarius.[c] 20And Jesus said to them, "Whose likeness and inscription is this?" 21They said, "Caesar’s." Then he said to them, (AB) "Therefore render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s." 22When they heard it, they marveled. And they(AC) left him and went away.
