Psalm 17:1-9

Psalm 17

1Hear a just cause, O Lord; attend to my cry; give ear to my prayer from lips free of deceit.

2From you let my vindication come; let your eyes see the right.

3If you try my heart, if you visit me by night, if you test me, you will find no wickedness in me; my mouth does not transgress.

4As for what others do, by the word of your lips I have avoided the ways of the violent.

5My steps have held fast to your paths; my feet have not slipped.

6I call upon you, for you will answer me, O God; incline your ear to me, hear my words.

7Wondrously show your steadfast love, O savior of those who seek refuge from their adversaries at your right hand.

8Guard me as the apple of the eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings,

9from the wicked who despoil me, my deadly enemies who surround me.

Deuteronomy 25:5-10

Deuteronomy 25:5-10

5When brothers reside together, and one of them dies and has no son, the wife of the deceased shall not be married outside the family to a stranger. Her husband’s brother shall go in to her, taking her in marriage, and performing the duty of a husband’s brother to her, 6and the firstborn whom she bears shall succeed to the name of the deceased brother, so that his name may not be blotted out of Israel. 7But if the man has no desire to marry his brother’s widow, then his brother’s widow shall go up to the elders at the gate and say, “My husband’s brother refuses to perpetuate his brother’s name in Israel; he will not perform the duty of a husband’s brother to me.” 8Then the elders of his town shall summon him and speak to him. If he persists, saying, “I have no desire to marry her,” 9then his brother’s wife shall go up to him in the presence of the elders, pull his sandal off his foot, spit in his face, and declare, “This is what is done to the man who does not build up his brother’s house.” 10Throughout Israel his family shall be known as “the house of him whose sandal was pulled off.”

Acts 22:22-23:11

Acts 22:22-23:11

22Up to this point they listened to him, but then they shouted, “Away with such a fellow from the earth! For he should not be allowed to live.” 23And while they were shouting, throwing off their cloaks, and tossing dust into the air, 24the tribune directed that he was to be brought into the barracks, and ordered him to be examined by flogging, to find out the reason for this outcry against him. 25But when they had tied him up with thongs, Paul said to the centurion who was standing by, “Is it legal for you to flog a Roman citizen who is uncondemned?” 26When the centurion heard that, he went to the tribune and said to him, “What are you about to do? This man is a Roman citizen.” 27The tribune came and asked Paul, “Tell me, are you a Roman citizen?” And he said, “Yes.” 28The tribune answered, “It cost me a large sum of money to get my citizenship.” Paul said, “But I was born a citizen.” 29Immediately those who were about to examine him drew back from him; and the tribune also was afraid, for he realized that Paul was a Roman citizen and that he had bound him. 30Since he wanted to find out what Paul was being accused of by the Jews, the next day he released him and ordered the chief priests and the entire council to meet. He brought Paul down and had him stand before them.

23While Paul was looking intently at the council he said, “Brothers, up to this day I have lived my life with a clear conscience before God.” 2Then the high priest Ananias ordered those standing near him to strike him on the mouth. 3At this Paul said to him, “God will strike you, you whitewashed wall! Are you sitting there to judge me according to the law, and yet in violation of the law you order me to be struck?” 4Those standing nearby said, “Do you dare to insult God’s high priest?” 5And Paul said, “I did not realize, brothers, that he was high priest; for it is written, ‘You shall not speak evil of a leader of your people.’”

6When Paul noticed that some were Sadducees and others were Pharisees, he called out in the council, “Brothers, I am a Pharisee, a son of Pharisees. I am on trial concerning the hope of the resurrection of the dead.” 7When he said this, a dissension began between the Pharisees and the Sadducees, and the assembly was divided. 8(The Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, or angel, or spirit; but the Pharisees acknowledge all three.) 9Then a great clamor arose, and certain scribes of the Pharisees’ group stood up and contended, “We find nothing wrong with this man. What if a spirit or an angel has spoken to him?” 10When the dissension became violent, the tribune, fearing that they would tear Paul to pieces, ordered the soldiers to go down, take him by force, and bring him into the barracks. 11That night the Lord stood near him and said, “Keep up your courage! For just as you have testified for me in Jerusalem, so you must bear witness also in Rome.”

Semicontinuous series (related to the lessons for the Saturday service)

Psalm 145:1-5, 17-21

Psalm 145

1I will extol you, my God and King, and bless your name forever and ever.

2Every day I will bless you, and praise your name forever and ever.

3Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised; his greatness is unsearchable.

4One generation shall laud your works to another, and shall declare your mighty acts.

5On the glorious splendor of your majesty, and on your wondrous works, I will meditate.

17The Lord is just in all his ways, and kind in all his doings.

18The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth.

19He fulfills the desire of all who fear him; he also hears their cry, and saves them.

20The Lord watches over all who love him, but all the wicked he will destroy.

21My mouth will speak the praise of the Lord, and all flesh will bless his holy name forever and ever.

Zechariah 1:1-17

Zechariah 1:1-17

1In the eighth month, in the second year of Darius, the word of the Lord came to the prophet Zechariah son of Berechiah son of Iddo, saying: 2The Lord was very angry with your ancestors. 3Therefore say to them, Thus says the Lord of hosts: Return to me, says the Lord of hosts, and I will return to you, says the Lord of hosts. 4Do not be like your ancestors, to whom the former prophets proclaimed, “Thus says the Lord of hosts, Return from your evil ways and from your evil deeds.” But they did not hear or heed me, says the Lord. 5Your ancestors, where are they? And the prophets, do they live forever? 6But my words and my statutes, which I commanded my servants the prophets, did they not overtake your ancestors? So they repented and said, “The Lord of hosts has dealt with us according to our ways and deeds, just as he planned to do.”

7On the twenty-fourth day of the eleventh month, the month of Shebat, in the second year of Darius, the word of the Lord came to the prophet Zechariah son of Berechiah son of Iddo; and Zechariah said, 8In the night I saw a man riding on a red horse! He was standing among the myrtle trees in the glen; and behind him were red, sorrel, and white horses. 9Then I said, “What are these, my lord?” The angel who talked with me said to me, “I will show you what they are.” 10So the man who was standing among the myrtle trees answered, “They are those whom the Lord has sent to patrol the earth.” 11Then they spoke to the angel of the Lord who was standing among the myrtle trees, “We have patrolled the earth, and lo, the whole earth remains at peace.” 12Then the angel of the Lord said, “O Lord of hosts, how long will you withhold mercy from Jerusalem and the cities of Judah, with which you have been angry these seventy years?” 13Then the Lord replied with gracious and comforting words to the angel who talked with me. 14So the angel who talked with me said to me, Proclaim this message: Thus says the Lord of hosts; I am very jealous for Jerusalem and for Zion. 15And I am extremely angry with the nations that are at ease; for while I was only a little angry, they made the disaster worse. 16Therefore, thus says the Lord, I have returned to Jerusalem with compassion; my house shall be built in it, says the Lord of hosts, and the measuring line shall be stretched out over Jerusalem. 17Proclaim further: Thus says the Lord of hosts: My cities shall again overflow with prosperity; the Lord will again comfort Zion and again choose Jerusalem.

Collect

O Lord, absolve Your people from their offenses that from the bonds of our sins, which by reason of our frailty we have brought upon ourselves, we may be delivered by Your bountiful goodness; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

First Reading: Jer. 5:1-19

Jerusalem Refused to Repent

1(A) Run to and fro through the streets of Jerusalem,

look and take note!Search her squares to see

(B) if you can find a man,one who does justice

and seeks truth,(C) that I may pardon her. 2(D) Though they say, "As the LORD lives,"

(E) yet they swear falsely. 3O LORD, do not your eyes look for truth?(F) You have struck them down,

but they felt no anguish;you have consumed them,

but they refused to take correction.(G) They have made their faces harder than rock;

they have refused to repent.

4Then I said, "These are only the poor;

they have no sense;(H) for they do not know the way of the LORD,

the justice of their God. 5I will go to the great

and will speak to them,for they know the way of the LORD,

the justice of their God."(I) But they all alike had broken the yoke;

they had burst the bonds.

6Therefore(J) a lion from the forest shall strike them down;

a(K) wolf from the desert shall devastate them.(L) A leopard is watching their cities;

everyone who goes out of them shall be torn in pieces,because their transgressions are many,

their(M) apostasies are great.

7(N) "How can I pardon you?

Your children have forsaken me

(O) and have sworn by those who are no gods.(P) When I fed them to the full,

(Q) they committed adultery

(R) and trooped to the houses of whores. 8They were well-fed, lusty stallions,

(S) each neighing(T) for his neighbor’s wife. 9(U) Shall I not punish them for these things?

declares the LORD;

and shall I not avenge myself

on a nation such as this?

10(V) "Go up through her vine rows and destroy,

(W) but make not a full end;strip away her branches,

for they are not the LORD’s. 11(X) For the house of Israel and the house of Judah

have been utterly treacherous to me,

declares the LORD. 12They have spoken falsely of the LORD

and have said, 'He will do nothing;(Y) no disaster will come upon us,

(Z) nor shall we see sword or famine. 13The prophets will become wind;

the word is not in them.Thus shall it be done to them!'"

The LORD Proclaims Judgment

14Therefore thus says the LORD, the God of hosts:"Because you have spoken this word,behold,(AA) I am making my words in your mouth(AB) a fire,

and this people wood, and the fire shall consume them. 15(AC) Behold, I am bringing against you

a nation from afar, O house of Israel,

declares the LORD.It is an enduring nation;

it is an ancient nation,a nation whose language you do not know,

(AD) nor can you understand what they say. 16(AE) Their quiver is like(AF) an open tomb;

they are all mighty warriors. 17(AG) They shall eat up your harvest and your food;

they shall eat up your sons and your daughters;they shall eat up your flocks and your herds;

they shall eat up your vines and your fig trees;your(AH) fortified cities in which you trust

they shall beat down with the sword."

18"But even in those days, declares the LORD,(AI) I will not make a full end of you. 19And when your people say,(AJ) 'Why has the LORD our God done all these things to us?' you shall say to them, 'As you have forsaken me and served foreign gods in your land,(AK) so you shall serve foreigners in a land that is not yours.'"

Second Reading: Matt. 22:23-46

Sadducees Ask About the Resurrection

23The same day(A) Sadducees came to him,(B) who say that there is no resurrection, and they asked him a question, 24saying, "Teacher, Moses said,(C) 'If a man dies having no children, his brother must marry the widow and raise up children for his brother.' 25Now there were seven brothers among us. The first married and died, and having no children left his wife to his brother. 26So too the second and third, down to the seventh. 27After them all, the woman died. 28In the resurrection, therefore, of the seven, whose wife will she be? For they all had her."

29But Jesus answered them, "You are wrong,(D) because you know neither the Scriptures nor(E) the power of God. 30For in the resurrection they neither(F) marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven. 31And as for the resurrection of the dead,(G) have you not read what was said to you by God: 32(H) 'I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob'? He is not God of the dead, but of the living." 33And when the crowd heard it,(I) they were astonished at his teaching.

The Great Commandment

34(J) But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced(K) the Sadducees, they gathered together. 35(L) And one of them,(M) a lawyer, asked him a question(N) to test him. 36"Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?" 37And he said to him, (O) "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38This is the great and first commandment. 39And(P) a second is like it:(Q) You shall love your neighbor as yourself. 40(R) On these two commandments depend(S) all the Law and the Prophets."

Whose Son Is the Christ?

41(T) Now while the Pharisees(U) were gathered together, Jesus asked them a question, 42saying, "What do you think about(V) the Christ? Whose son is he?" They said to him, "The son of David." 43He said to them, "How is it then that David,(W) in the Spirit, calls him Lord, saying,

44(X) "'The Lord said to my Lord,Sit at my right hand,

until I put your enemies under your feet'?

45If then David calls him Lord,(Y) how is he his son?" 46(Z) And no one was able to answer him a word,(AA) nor from that day did anyone dare to ask him any more questions.
