Psalm 98
Psalm 98
1O sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous things. His right hand and his holy arm have gotten him victory.
2The Lord has made known his victory; he has revealed his vindication in the sight of the nations.
3He has remembered his steadfast love and faithfulness to the house of Israel. All the ends of the earth have seen the victory of our God.
4Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth; break forth into joyous song and sing praises.
5Sing praises to the Lord with the lyre, with the lyre and the sound of melody.
6With trumpets and the sound of the horn make a joyful noise before the King, the Lord.
7Let the sea roar, and all that fills it; the world and those who live in it.
8Let the floods clap their hands; let the hills sing together for joy
9at the presence of the Lord, for he is coming to judge the earth. He will judge the world with righteousness, and the peoples with equity.
Ezekiel 10:1-19
Ezekiel 10:1-19
10Then I looked, and above the dome that was over the heads of the cherubim there appeared above them something like a sapphire, in form resembling a throne. 2He said to the man clothed in linen, “Go within the wheelwork underneath the cherubim; fill your hands with burning coals from among the cherubim, and scatter them over the city.” He went in as I looked on. 3Now the cherubim were standing on the south side of the house when the man went in; and a cloud filled the inner court. 4Then the glory of the Lord rose up from the cherub to the threshold of the house; the house was filled with the cloud, and the court was full of the brightness of the glory of the Lord. 5The sound of the wings of the cherubim was heard as far as the outer court, like the voice of God Almighty when he speaks. 6When he commanded the man clothed in linen, “Take fire from within the wheelwork, from among the cherubim,” he went in and stood beside a wheel. 7And a cherub stretched out his hand from among the cherubim to the fire that was among the cherubim, took some of it and put it into the hands of the man clothed in linen, who took it and went out.
8The cherubim appeared to have the form of a human hand under their wings. 9I looked, and there were four wheels beside the cherubim, one beside each cherub; and the appearance of the wheels was like gleaming beryl. 10And as for their appearance, the four looked alike, something like a wheel within a wheel. 11When they moved, they moved in any of the four directions without veering as they moved; but in whatever direction the front wheel faced, the others followed without veering as they moved. 12Their entire body, their rims, their spokes, their wings, and the wheels—the wheels of the four of them—were full of eyes all around. 13As for the wheels, they were called in my hearing “the wheelwork.” 14Each one had four faces: the first face was that of the cherub, the second face was that of a human being, the third that of a lion, and the fourth that of an eagle. 15The cherubim rose up. These were the living creatures that I saw by the river Chebar. 16When the cherubim moved, the wheels moved beside them; and when the cherubim lifted up their wings to rise up from the earth, the wheels at their side did not veer. 17When they stopped, the others stopped, and when they rose up, the others rose up with them; for the spirit of the living creatures was in them. 18Then the glory of the Lord went out from the threshold of the house and stopped above the cherubim. 19The cherubim lifted up their wings and rose up from the earth in my sight as they went out with the wheels beside them. They stopped at the entrance of the east gate of the house of the Lord; and the glory of the God of Israel was above them.
Luke 17:20-37
Luke 17:20-37
20Once Jesus was asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God was coming, and he answered, “The kingdom of God is not coming with things that can be observed; 21nor will they say, ‘Look, here it is!’ or ‘There it is!’ For, in fact, the kingdom of God is among you.” 22Then he said to the disciples, “The days are coming when you will long to see one of the days of the Son of Man, and you will not see it. 23They will say to you, ‘Look there!’ or ‘Look here!’ Do not go, do not set off in pursuit. 24For as the lightning flashes and lights up the sky from one side to the other, so will the Son of Man be in his day. 25But first he must endure much suffering and be rejected by this generation. 26Just as it was in the days of Noah, so too it will be in the days of the Son of Man. 27They were eating and drinking, and marrying and being given in marriage, until the day Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed all of them. 28Likewise, just as it was in the days of Lot: they were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building, 29but on the day that Lot left Sodom, it rained fire and sulfur from heaven and destroyed all of them 30—it will be like that on the day that the Son of Man is revealed. 31On that day, anyone on the housetop who has belongings in the house must not come down to take them away; and likewise anyone in the field must not turn back. 32Remember Lot’s wife. 33Those who try to make their life secure will lose it, but those who lose their life will keep it. 34I tell you, on that night there will be two in one bed; one will be taken and the other left. 35There will be two women grinding meal together; one will be taken and the other left.” 37Then they asked him, “Where, Lord?” He said to them, “Where the corpse is, there the vultures will gather.”

Isaiah 12
Isaiah 12
12You will say in that day: I will give thanks to you, O Lord, for though you were angry with me, your anger turned away, and you comforted me. 2Surely God is my salvation; I will trust, and will not be afraid, for the Lord God is my strength and my might; he has become my salvation. 3With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation.
4And you will say in that day: Give thanks to the Lord, call on his name; make known his deeds among the nations; proclaim that his name is exalted. 5Sing praises to the Lord, for he has done gloriously; let this be known in all the earth. 6Shout aloud and sing for joy, O royal Zion, for great in your midst is the Holy One of Israel.
Isaiah 59:15b-21
Isaiah 59:15b-2115Truth is lacking, and whoever turns from evil is despoiled. The Lord saw it, and it displeased him that there was no justice.
16He saw that there was no one, and was appalled that there was no one to intervene; so his own arm brought him victory, and his righteousness upheld him. 17He put on righteousness like a breastplate, and a helmet of salvation on his head; he put on garments of vengeance for clothing, and wrapped himself in fury as in a mantle. 18According to their deeds, so will he repay; wrath to his adversaries, requital to his enemies; to the coastlands he will render requital. 19So those in the west shall fear the name of the Lord, and those in the east, his glory; for he will come like a pent-up stream that the wind of the Lord drives on. 20And he will come to Zion as Redeemer, to those in Jacob who turn from transgression, says the Lord. 21And as for me, this is my covenant with them, says the Lord: my spirit that is upon you, and my words that I have put in your mouth, shall not depart out of your mouth, or out of the mouths of your children, or out of the mouths of your children’s children, says the Lord, from now on and forever.

Daily Lectionary: Jeremiah 26:1-19; Matthew 26:20-35
Behold, God is my helper; The Lord is with those who uphold my life. (Psalm 54:4 from the Introit for the Second-Last Sunday)
In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. “When God closes a door, He opens a window.” That’s a phrase we’ve all heard at some point or another. And in David’s case, it was an awfully smallwindow that opened.
He was on the run from King Saul (again), and it was only because of the marauding Philistines that he escaped capture. Or was it? Was it simply luck that caused the Philistines to choose that exact moment to invade Saul’s kingdom?
Or was it God’s divine foresight? Was it God’s protecting hand? In this psalm, David offers a prayer of thanksgiving for His protection, and he says once again that it is indeed God Himself who protected and guarded him.
Is it luck when you escape some threat or unsavory experience? No, it is at God’s direction. It is His protective hand that guards and keeps you from harm.
Your God and Lord has a plan for you—plans that include your eternal life risen from the dead in His presence among the angels and archangels and all the company of heaven.
And when God has a plan, He doesn’t go about it half-heartedly. He doesn’t watch over you with only one eye open. He sent His Son to live, to die, and to live again for you. He washed away the stain of your sin with the blood of Jesus so that you would be marked with His holy cross as one redeemed by Him, one loved by Him, one protected by Him.
When that metaphorical door closes, don’t panic. God is your helper, He is with those who are with you, and He will show you the way —the way of forgiveness and the way into His eternal presence, through His Son and your Lord. In the Name of Jesus. Amen.
We sought the Lord in our distress; O God, in mercy hear us. Our Savior saw our helplessness And came with peace to cheer us. For this we thank and praise the Lord, Who is by one and all adored; To God all praise and glory! (LSB 819:3)
Collect
Almighty God, we implore You, show Your mercy to Your humble servants that we, who put no trust in our own merits, may not be dealt with after the severity of Your judgment but according to Your mercy; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
First Reading: Jer. 26:1-19
Jeremiah Threatened with Death
1(A) In the beginning of the reign of(B) Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, this word came from the LORD: 2"Thus says the LORD:(C) Stand in the court of the LORD’s house, and speak to all the cities of Judah that come to worship in the house of the LORD(D) all the words that I command you to speak to them;(E) do not hold back a word. 3(F) It may be they will listen, and every one turn from his evil way,(G) that I may relent of the disaster that I intend to do to them(H) because of their evil deeds. 4You shall say to them, 'Thus says the LORD:(I) If you will not listen to me, to walk in my law that I have set before you, 5(J) and to listen to the words of my servants the prophets whom I send to you urgently, though you have not listened, 6then I will make this house(K) like Shiloh, and I will make this city(L) a curse for all the nations of the earth.'"
7(M) The priests and the prophets and all the people heard Jeremiah speaking these words in the house of the LORD. 8And when Jeremiah had finished speaking all that the LORD had commanded him to speak to all the people, then(N) the priests and the prophets and all the people laid hold of him, saying, "You shall die! 9Why have you prophesied in the name of the LORD, saying, 'This house shall be(O) like Shiloh, and this city shall be desolate,(P) without inhabitant'?" And all the people gathered around Jeremiah in the house of the LORD.
10When(Q) the officials of Judah heard these things, they came up from the king’s house to the house of the LORD and took their seat in the(R) entry of the New Gate of the house of the LORD. 11Then(S) the priests and the prophets said to the officials and to all the people,(T) "This man deserves the sentence of death, because he has prophesied against this city, as you have heard with your own ears."
12Then Jeremiah spoke to all the officials and all the people, saying, "The LORD sent me to prophesy against this house and this city all the words you have heard. 13Now therefore(U) mend your ways and your deeds,(V) and obey the voice of the LORD your God,(W) and the LORD will relent of the disaster that he has pronounced against you. 14(X) But as for me, behold, I am in your hands. Do with me as seems good and right to you. 15Only know for certain that if you put me to death,(Y) you will bring innocent blood upon yourselves and upon this city and its inhabitants, for in truth the LORD sent me to you to speak all these words in your ears."
Jeremiah Spared from Death
16(Z) Then the officials and all the people said to the priests and the prophets,(AA) "This man does not deserve the sentence of death, for he has spoken to us in the name of the LORD our God." 17(AB) And certain of(AC) the elders of the land arose and spoke to all the assembled people, saying, 18"Micah of Moresheth prophesied in the days of Hezekiah king of Judah, and said to all the people of Judah: 'Thus says the LORD of hosts,
(AD) "'Zion shall be plowed as a field;
Jerusalem shall become a heap of ruins,
and the mountain of the house a wooded height.'
19Did Hezekiah king of Judah and all Judah put him to death?(AE) Did he not fear the LORD and entreat the favor of the LORD,(AF) and did not the LORD relent of the disaster that he had pronounced against them?(AG) But we are about to bring great disaster upon ourselves."

Second Reading: Matt. 26:20-35
20(A) When it was evening, he reclined at table with the twelve.[a] 21And as they were eating,(B) he said, "Truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me." 22And they were very sorrowful and began to say to him one after another, "Is it I, Lord?" 23He answered, (C) "He who has dipped his hand in the dish with me will betray me. 24The Son of Man goes(D) as it is written of him, but(E) woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed!(F) It would have been better for that man if he had not been born." 25Judas, who would betray him, answered, "Is it I,(G) Rabbi?" He said to him, (H) "You have said so."
Institution of the Lord’s Supper
26(I) Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and(J) after blessing it broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, "Take, eat;(K) this is my body." 27And he took a cup, and when he(L) had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, "Drink of it, all of you, 28for(M) this is my(N) blood of the[b] covenant, which is poured out for(O) many(P) for the forgiveness of sins. 29I tell you I will not drink again of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you(Q) in my Father’s kingdom."
Jesus Foretells Peter’s Denial
30(R) And when they had sung a hymn,(S) they went out to(T) the Mount of Olives. 31Then Jesus said to them, "You will all fall away because of me this night. For it is written, 'I will(U) strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.' 32But after I am raised up,(V) I will go before you to Galilee." 33(W) Peter answered him, "Though they all fall away because of you, I will never fall away." 34(X) Jesus said to him, "Truly, I tell you, this very night,(Y) before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times." 35(Z) Peter said to him, "Even if I must die with you, I will not deny you!" And all the disciples said the same.

Saturday Father Reading
"You should go to the Sacrament this way and say, 'Lord, I am a lazy jackass and so I come so that You may help me and ignite my heart!' You need not deliberate on how you may prepare yourself to worthily receive the Sacrament, for if you feel that you want to be helped and if the need presses hard on you, then you are already prepared to go to the Sacrament."
