ST. LEO THE GREAT

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 10, 2010
Pope Leo the Great is the first Pope whose sermons and letters, many of which were on faith and charity, were preserved in extensive collections. He served as pontiff from 440 until his death in 461. His writing on the Incarnation was acclaimed at the Council of Chalcedon in 451.
Prior to his pontificate, Leo was a deacon and active as a peacemaker in the Roman Empire. He is most remembered for having successfully persuaded Attila the Hun not to plunder Rome. He was not as successful during another attack three years later, however. Nevertheless, he managed to save the city from being burnt. He stayed on to help the people rebuild Rome.
He was made a Doctor of the Church in 1754

Psalm - Ps 23:1b-6

1b The Lord directs me, and nothing will be lacking to me.2 He has settled me here, in a place of pasture. He has led me out to the water of refreshment.3 He has converted my soul. He has led me away on the paths of justice, for the sake of his name.4 For, even if I should walk in the midst of the shadow of death, I will fear no evils. For you are with me. Your rod and your staff, they have given me consolation.5 You have prepared a table in my sight, opposite those who trouble me. You have anointed my head with oil, and my cup, which inebriates me, how brilliant it is!6 And your mercy will follow me all the days of my life, and so may I dwell in the house of the Lord for length of days

First Reading - Titus 3:1-7

1 Admonish them to be subordinate to the rulers and authorities, to obey their dictates, to be prepared for every good work,2 to speak evil of no one, not to be litigious, but to be reserved, displaying all meekness toward all men.3 For, in times past, we ourselves were also unwise, unbelieving, erring, servants of various desires and pleasures, acting with malice and envy, being hateful and hating one another.4 But then the kindness and humanity of God our Savior appeared.5 And he saved us, not by works of justice that we had done, but, in accord with his mercy, by the washing of regeneration and by the renovation of the Holy Spirit,6 whom he has poured out upon us in abundance, through Jesus Christ our Savior,7 so that, having been justified by his grace, we may become heirs according to the hope of eternal life

Gospel - Mt 16:13-19

13 Then Jesus went into parts of Caesarea Philippi. And he questioned his disciples, saying, “Who do men say that the Son of man is?”14 And they said, “Some say John the Baptist, and others say Elijah, still others say Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”15 Jesus said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”16 Simon Peter responded by saying, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”17 And in response, Jesus said to him: “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father, who is in heaven.18 And I say to you, that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church, and the gates of Hell shall not prevail against it.19 And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven. And whatever you shall bind on earth shall be bound, even in heaven. And whatever you shall release on earth shall be released, even in heaven.”
