Daily Readings

Morning Office:

Psalm 61

Assurance of God’s Protection

To the leader: with stringed instruments. Of David.

1 Hear my cry, O God;

listen to my prayer.

2 From the end of the earth I call to you,

when my heart is faint.

Lead me to the rock

that is higher than I;

3 for you are my refuge,

a strong tower against the enemy.

4 Let me abide in your tent for ever,

find refuge under the shelter of your wings.

Selah

5 For you, O God, have heard my vows;

you have given me the heritage of those who fear your name.

6 Prolong the life of the king;

may his years endure to all generations!

7 May he be enthroned for ever before God;

appoint steadfast love and faithfulness to watch over him!

8 So I will always sing praises to your name,

as I pay my vows day after day.

Psalm 62

Song of Trust in God Alone

To the leader: according to Jeduthun. A Psalm of David.

1 For God alone my soul waits in silence;

from him comes my salvation.

2 He alone is my rock and my salvation,

my fortress; I shall never be shaken.

3 How long will you assail a person,

will you batter your victim, all of you,

as you would a leaning wall, a tottering fence?

4 Their only plan is to bring down a person of prominence.

They take pleasure in falsehood;

they bless with their mouths,

but inwardly they curse.

Selah

5 For God alone my soul waits in silence,

for my hope is from him.

6 He alone is my rock and my salvation,

my fortress; I shall not be shaken.

7 On God rests my deliverance and my honour;

my mighty rock, my refuge is in God.

8 Trust in him at all times, O people;

pour out your heart before him;

God is a refuge for us.

Selah

9 Those of low estate are but a breath,

those of high estate are a delusion;

in the balances they go up;

they are together lighter than a breath.

10 Put no confidence in extortion,

and set no vain hopes on robbery;

if riches increase, do not set your heart on them.

11 Once God has spoken;

twice have I heard this:

that power belongs to God,

12 and steadfast love belongs to you, O Lord.

For you repay to all

according to their work.

Sirach 43:1-22

The Splendour of the Sun

43The pride of the higher realms is the clear vault of the sky,

as glorious to behold as the sight of the heavens.

2 The sun, when it appears, proclaims as it rises

what a marvellous instrument it is, the work of the Most High.

3 At noon it parches the land,

and who can withstand its burning heat?

4 A man tending* a furnace works in burning heat,

but three times as hot is the sun scorching the mountains;

it breathes out fiery vapours,

and its bright rays blind the eyes.

5 Great is the Lord who made it;

at his orders it hurries on its course.

The Splendour of the Moon

6 It is the moon that marks the changing seasons,*

governing the times, their everlasting sign.

7 From the moon comes the sign for festal days,

a light that wanes when it completes its course.

8 The new moon, as its name suggests, renews itself;*

how marvellous it is in this change,

a beacon to the hosts on high,

shining in the vault of the heavens!

The Glory of the Stars and the Rainbow

9 The glory of the stars is the beauty of heaven,

a glittering array in the heights of the Lord.

10 On the orders of the Holy One they stand in their appointed places;

they never relax in their watches.

11 Look at the rainbow, and praise him who made it;

it is exceedingly beautiful in its brightness.

12 It encircles the sky with its glorious arc;

the hands of the Most High have stretched it out.

The Marvels of Nature

13 By his command he sends the driving snow

and speeds the lightnings of his judgement.

14 Therefore the storehouses are opened,

and the clouds fly out like birds.

15 In his majesty he gives the clouds their strength,

and the hailstones are broken in pieces.

17a The voice of his thunder rebukes the earth;

16 when he appears, the mountains shake.

At his will the south wind blows;

17b so do the storm from the north and the whirlwind.

He scatters the snow like birds flying down,

and its descent is like locusts alighting.

18 The eye is dazzled by the beauty of its whiteness,

and the mind is amazed as it falls.

19 He pours frost over the earth like salt,

and icicles form like pointed thorns.

20 The cold north wind blows,

and ice freezes on the water;

it settles on every pool of water,

and the water puts it on like a breastplate.

21 He consumes the mountains and burns up the wilderness,

and withers the tender grass like fire.

22 A mist quickly heals all things;

the falling dew gives refreshment from the heat.

Psalm 68

Praise and Thanksgiving

To the leader. Of David. A Psalm. A Song.

1 Let God rise up, let his enemies be scattered;

let those who hate him flee before him.

2 As smoke is driven away, so drive them away;

as wax melts before the fire,

let the wicked perish before God.

3 But let the righteous be joyful;

let them exult before God;

let them be jubilant with joy.

4 Sing to God, sing praises to his name;

lift up a song to him who rides upon the clouds*—

his name is the Lord—

be exultant before him.

5 Father of orphans and protector of widows

is God in his holy habitation.

6 God gives the desolate a home to live in;

he leads out the prisoners to prosperity,

but the rebellious live in a parched land.

7 O God, when you went out before your people,

when you marched through the wilderness,

Selah

8 the earth quaked, the heavens poured down rain

at the presence of God, the God of Sinai,

at the presence of God, the God of Israel.

9 Rain in abundance, O God, you showered abroad;

you restored your heritage when it languished;

10 your flock found a dwelling in it;

in your goodness, O God, you provided for the needy.

11 The Lord gives the command;

great is the company of those* who bore the tidings:

12 ‘The kings of the armies, they flee, they flee!’

The women at home divide the spoil,

13 though they stay among the sheepfolds—

the wings of a dove covered with silver,

its pinions with green gold.

14 When the Almighty* scattered kings there,

snow fell on Zalmon.

15 O mighty mountain, mountain of Bashan;

O many-peaked mountain, mountain of Bashan!

16 Why do you look with envy, O many-peaked mountain,

at the mount that God desired for his abode,

where the Lord will reside for ever?

17 With mighty chariotry, twice ten thousand,

thousands upon thousands,

the Lord came from Sinai into the holy place.*

18 You ascended the high mount,

leading captives in your train

and receiving gifts from people,

even from those who rebel against the Lord God’s abiding there.

19 Blessed be the Lord,

who daily bears us up;

God is our salvation.

Selah

20 Our God is a God of salvation,

and to God, the Lord, belongs escape from death.

21 But God will shatter the heads of his enemies,

the hairy crown of those who walk in their guilty ways.

22 The Lord said,

‘I will bring them back from Bashan,

I will bring them back from the depths of the sea,

23 so that you may bathe* your feet in blood,

so that the tongues of your dogs may have their share from the foe.’

24 Your solemn processions are seen,* O God,

the processions of my God, my King, into the sanctuary—

25 the singers in front, the musicians last,

between them girls playing tambourines:

26 ‘Bless God in the great congregation,

the Lord, O you who are of Israel’s fountain!’

27 There is Benjamin, the least of them, in the lead,

the princes of Judah in a body,

the princes of Zebulun, the princes of Naphtali.

28 Summon your might, O God;

show your strength, O God, as you have done for us before.

29 Because of your temple at Jerusalem

kings bear gifts to you.

30 Rebuke the wild animals that live among the reeds,

the herd of bulls with the calves of the peoples.

Trample* under foot those who lust after tribute;

scatter the peoples who delight in war.*

31 Let bronze be brought from Egypt;

let Ethiopia* hasten to stretch out its hands to God.

32 Sing to God, O kingdoms of the earth;

sing praises to the Lord,

Selah

33 O rider in the heavens, the ancient heavens;

listen, he sends out his voice, his mighty voice.

34 Ascribe power to God,

whose majesty is over Israel;

and whose power is in the skies.

35 Awesome is God in his* sanctuary,

the God of Israel;

he gives power and strength to his people.

Blessed be God!

Revelation 14:14-15:8

Reaping the Earth’s Harvest

14 Then I looked, and there was a white cloud, and seated on the cloud was one like the Son of Man, with a golden crown on his head, and a sharp sickle in his hand! 15Another angel came out of the temple, calling with a loud voice to the one who sat on the cloud, ‘Use your sickle and reap, for the hour to reap has come, because the harvest of the earth is fully ripe.’ 16So the one who sat on the cloud swung his sickle over the earth, and the earth was reaped.

17 Then another angel came out of the temple in heaven, and he too had a sharp sickle. 18Then another angel came out from the altar, the angel who has authority over fire, and he called with a loud voice to him who had the sharp sickle, ‘Use your sharp sickle and gather the clusters of the vine of the earth, for its grapes are ripe.’ 19So the angel swung his sickle over the earth and gathered the vintage of the earth, and he threw it into the great wine press of the wrath of God. 20And the wine press was trodden outside the city, and blood flowed from the wine press, as high as a horse’s bridle, for a distance of about two hundred miles.*

The Angels with the Seven Last Plagues

15Then I saw another portent in heaven, great and amazing: seven angels with seven plagues, which are the last, for with them the wrath of God is ended.

2 And I saw what appeared to be a sea of glass mixed with fire, and those who had conquered the beast and its image and the number of its name standing beside the sea of glass with harps of God in their hands. 3And they sing the song of Moses, the servant* of God, and the song of the Lamb:

‘Great and amazing are your deeds,

Lord God the Almighty!

Just and true are your ways,

King of the nations!*

4 Lord, who will not fear

and glorify your name?

For you alone are holy.

All nations will come

and worship before you,

for your judgements have been revealed.’

5 After this I looked, and the temple of the tent* of witness in heaven was opened, 6and out of the temple came the seven angels with the seven plagues, robed in pure bright linen,* with golden sashes across their chests. 7Then one of the four living creatures gave the seven angels seven golden bowls full of the wrath of God, who lives for ever and ever; 8and the temple was filled with smoke from the glory of God and from his power, and no one could enter the temple until the seven plagues of the seven angels were ended.

Luke 13:1-9

Repent or Perish

13At that very time there were some present who told him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. 2He asked them, ‘Do you think that because these Galileans suffered in this way they were worse sinners than all other Galileans? 3No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all perish as they did. 4Or those eighteen who were killed when the tower of Siloam fell on them—do you think that they were worse offenders than all the others living in Jerusalem? 5No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all perish just as they did.’

The Parable of the Barren Fig Tree

6 Then he told this parable: ‘A man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard; and he came looking for fruit on it and found none. 7So he said to the gardener, “See here! For three years I have come looking for fruit on this fig tree, and still I find none. Cut it down! Why should it be wasting the soil?” 8He replied, “Sir, let it alone for one more year, until I dig round it and put manure on it. 9If it bears fruit next year, well and good; but if not, you can cut it down.” ’

Eucharistic Readings:

Philippians 2:5-115Let the same mind be in you that was* in Christ Jesus,

6 who, though he was in the form of God,

did not regard equality with God

as something to be exploited,

7 but emptied himself,

taking the form of a slave,

being born in human likeness.

And being found in human form,

8 he humbled himself

and became obedient to the point of death—

even death on a cross.

9 Therefore God also highly exalted him

and gave him the name

that is above every name,

10 so that at the name of Jesus

every knee should bend,

in heaven and on earth and under the earth,

11 and every tongue should confess

that Jesus Christ is Lord,

to the glory of God the Father.

Psalm 22:22-28

23 You who fear the Lord, praise him!

All you offspring of Jacob, glorify him;

stand in awe of him, all you offspring of Israel!

24 For he did not despise or abhor

the affliction of the afflicted;

he did not hide his face from me,*

but heard when I* cried to him.

25 From you comes my praise in the great congregation;

my vows I will pay before those who fear him.

26 The poor* shall eat and be satisfied;

those who seek him shall praise the Lord.

May your hearts live for ever!

27 All the ends of the earth shall remember

and turn to the Lord;

and all the families of the nations

shall worship before him.*

28 For dominion belongs to the Lord,

and he rules over the nations.

29 To him,* indeed, shall all who sleep in* the earth bow down;

before him shall bow all who go down to the dust,

and I shall live for him.*

Luke 14:15-24

The Parable of the Great Dinner

15 One of the dinner guests, on hearing this, said to him, ‘Blessed is anyone who will eat bread in the kingdom of God!’ 16Then Jesus* said to him, ‘Someone gave a great dinner and invited many. 17At the time for the dinner he sent his slave to say to those who had been invited, “Come; for everything is ready now.” 18But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said to him, “I have bought a piece of land, and I must go out and see it; please accept my apologies.” 19Another said, “I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I am going to try them out; please accept my apologies.” 20Another said, “I have just been married, and therefore I cannot come.” 21So the slave returned and reported this to his master. Then the owner of the house became angry and said to his slave, “Go out at once into the streets and lanes of the town and bring in the poor, the crippled, the blind, and the lame.” 22And the slave said, “Sir, what you ordered has been done, and there is still room.” 23Then the master said to the slave, “Go out into the roads and lanes, and compel people to come in, so that my house may be filled. 24For I tell you,* none of those who were invited will taste my dinner.” ’

PRAYERS (traditional language)

FOR ALL THE FAITHFUL DEPARTED

In peace let us pray to the Lord.

Almighty God, who hast knit together thine elect in one communion and fellowship, in the mystical body of thy Son Christ our Lord: Grant, we beseech thee, to thy whole Church in paradise and on earth, thy light and thy peace.

Grant that all those who have been baptized into Christ's death and resurrection may die to sin and rise to newness of life, and that through the grave and gate of death we may pass with him to our joyful resurrection.

Grant to us who are still in our pilgrimage, and who walk as yet by faith, that thy Holy Spirit may lead us in holiness and righteousness all our days.

Grant to thy faithful people pardon and peace, that we may be cleansed from all our sins, and serve thee with a quiet mind.

Grant to all who mourn a sure confidence in thy fatherly care, that, casting all their grief upon thee, they may know the consolation of thy love.

Give courage and faith to those who are bereaved, that they may have strength to meet the days ahead in the comfort of a reasonable and holy hope, in the joyful expectation of eternal life with those they love.

Help us, we pray, in the midst of things we cannot understand, to believe and trust in the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, and the resurrection to life everlasting.

Grant us, with all who have died in the hope of the resurrection, to have our consummation and bliss in thine eternal and everlasting glory, and, with all thy saints, to receive the crown of life which thou dost promise to all who share in the victory of thy Son Jesus Christ; who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

Father of all, we pray to thee for those we love, but see no longer: Grant them thy peace; let light perpetual shine upon them; and in thy loving wisdom and almighty power, work in them the good purpose of thy perfect will; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the Living God, we pray thee to set thy passion, cross, and death, between thy judgement and our souls, now and in the hour of our death. Give mercy and grace to the living, pardon and rest to the dead, to thy holy Church peace and concord, and to us sinners everlasting life and glory; who with the Father and the Holy Spirit livest and reignest, one God, now and ever.

Lord Jesus Christ, who by thy death didst take away the sting of death: Grant to us thy servants so to follow in faith where thou hast led the way, that we may at length fall asleep peacefully in thee, and awake after thy likeness; for thy tender mercies' sake.

O Almighty God, the God of the spirits of all flesh, who by a voice from heaven didst proclaim, Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord: Multiply, we beseech thee, to those who rest in Jesus the manifold blessings of thy love, that the good work which thou didst begin in them may be made perfect unto the day of Jesus Christ. And of thy mercy, O heavenly Father, grant that we, who now serve thee on earth, may at last, together with them, be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light; for the sake of thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord.

FOR A DEPARTED FRIEND

Gravestone of my wife's great-great grandparents; in Mendham, NJ

Into thy hands, O merciful Savior, we commend thy servant N., now departed from the body. Acknowledge, we, humbly beseech thee, O Lord, a sheep of thine own fold, a lamb of thine own flock, a sinner of thine own redeeming. Receive (him/her) into the arms of thy mercy, into the blessed rest of everlasting peace, and into the glorious company of the saints in light.

O God, whose mercies cannot be numbered: Accept our prayers on behalf of thy servant N., and grant (him/her) an entrance into the land of light and joy, in the fellowship of thy saints; through Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.

Remember thy servant, O Lord, according to the favor which thou bearest unto thy people; and grant that, increasing in knowledge and love of thee, (he/she) may go from strength to strength in the life of perfect service in thy heavenly kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Almighty God, we remember this day before thee thy faithful servant N., and we pray that, having opened to (him/her) the gates of larger life, thou wilt receive (him/her) more and more into thy joyful service, that (he/she) may win with thee and all thy servants everywhere the eternal victory, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Into thy hands, O Lord, we commend thy servant, our dear (brother/sister), as into the hands of a faithful Creator and most merciful Savior, beseeching thee that (he/she) may be precious in thy sight. Wash (him/her), we pray thee, in the blood of that immaculate Lamb that was slain to take away the sins of the world; that, whatsoever defilements (he/she) may have contracted in the midst of this earthly life being purged and done away, (he/she) may be presented pure and without spot before thee; through the merits of Jesus Christ thine only Son our Lord.

FOR THOSE WHO MOURN

Lord, Jesus Christ, the Resurrection and the Life:

Thou didst console Martha and Mary in their distress; draw near to us who mourn, and dry the tears of those who weep.

Thou didst weep at the grave of thy friend Lazarus; comfort us in our sorrow.

Thou didst raise the dead to life; give to our (brother/sister) eternal life.

Thou didst promise paradise to the thief who repented; bring our (brother/sister) to the joys of heaven.

Our (brother/sister) was washed in Baptism and annointed with the Holy Spirit; give (him/her) fellowship with all thy saints.

(He/She) was nourished with thy Body and Blood; grant (him/her) a place at the table in your heavenly kingdom.

Comfort us in our sorrows at the death of our (brother/sister); let our faith be our consolation, and eternal life our hope.

Almighty God, Father of all mercies and giver of comfort: Deal graciously, we pray, with all who mourn; that, casting all their care upon thee, they may know the consolation of thy love; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Almighty God, look with pity upon the sorrows of thy servants for

whom we pray. Remember them, Lord, in mercy; nourish them with

patience; comfort them with a sense of thy goodness; lift up thy

countenance upon them; and give them peace; through Jesus Christ our

Lord.

Psalm 130

Waiting for Divine Redemption

A Song of Ascents.

1 Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord.

2 Lord, hear my voice!

Let your ears be attentive

to the voice of my supplications!

3 If you, O Lord, should mark iniquities,

Lord, who could stand?

4 But there is forgiveness with you,

so that you may be revered.

5 I wait for the Lord, my soul waits,

and in his word I hope;

6 my soul waits for the Lord

more than those who watch for the morning,

more than those who watch for the morning.

7 O Israel, hope in the Lord!

For with the Lord there is steadfast love,

and with him is great power to redeem.

8 It is he who will redeem Israel

from all its iniquities.

Psalm 116:10-17

I kept my faith, even when I said,

‘I am greatly afflicted’;

11 I said in my consternation,

‘Everyone is a liar.’

12 What shall I return to the Lord

for all his bounty to me?

13 I will lift up the cup of salvation

and call on the name of the Lord,

14 I will pay my vows to the Lord

in the presence of all his people.

15 Precious in the sight of the Lord

is the death of his faithful ones.

16 O Lord, I am your servant;

I am your servant, the child of your serving-maid.

You have loosed my bonds.

17 I will offer to you a thanksgiving sacrifice

and call on the name of the Lord.

Wisdom 3:1-9

The Destiny of the Righteous

3But the souls of the righteous are in the hand of God,

and no torment will ever touch them.

2 In the eyes of the foolish they seemed to have died,

and their departure was thought to be a disaster,

3 and their going from us to be their destruction;

but they are at peace.

4 For though in the sight of others they were punished,

their hope is full of immortality.

5 Having been disciplined a little, they will receive great good,

because God tested them and found them worthy of himself;

6 like gold in the furnace he tried them,

and like a sacrificial burnt-offering he accepted them.

7 In the time of their visitation they will shine forth,

and will run like sparks through the stubble.

8 They will govern nations and rule over peoples,

and the Lord will reign over them for ever.

9 Those who trust in him will understand truth,

and the faithful will abide with him in love,

because grace and mercy are upon his holy ones,

and he watches over his elect.*

Isaiah 25:6-9

6 On this mountain the Lord of hosts will make for all peoples

a feast of rich food, a feast of well-matured wines,

of rich food filled with marrow, of well-matured wines strained clear.

7 And he will destroy on this mountain

the shroud that is cast over all peoples,

the sheet that is spread over all nations;

8 he will swallow up death for ever.

Then the Lord God will wipe away the tears from all faces,

and the disgrace of his people he will take away from all the earth,

for the Lord has spoken.

9 It will be said on that day,

Lo, this is our God; we have waited for him, so that he might save us.

This is the Lord for whom we have waited;

let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation.

1 Thessalonians 4:13-18

The Coming of the Lord

13 But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers and sisters,* about those who have died,* so that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. 14For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have died.* 15For this we declare to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will by no means precede those who have died.* 16For the Lord himself, with a cry of command, with the archangel’s call and with the sound of God’s trumpet, will descend from heaven, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up in the clouds together with them to meet the Lord in the air; and so we will be with the Lord for ever. 18Therefore encourage one another with these words.

1 Corinthians 15:50-58

50 What I am saying, brothers and sisters,* is this: flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable. 51Listen, I will tell you a mystery! We will not all die,* but we will all be changed, 52in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. 53For this perishable body must put on imperishability, and this mortal body must put on immortality. 54When this perishable body puts on imperishability, and this mortal body puts on immortality, then the saying that is written will be fulfilled:

‘Death has been swallowed up in victory.’

55 ‘Where, O death, is your victory?

Where, O death, is your sting?’

56The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. 57But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

58 Therefore, my beloved,* be steadfast, immovable, always excelling in the work of the Lord, because you know that in the Lord your labour is not in vain.

John 5:24-2724Very truly, I tell you, anyone who hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life, and does not come under judgement, but has passed from death to life.

25 ‘Very truly, I tell you, the hour is coming, and is now here, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. 26For just as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself; 27and he has given him authority to execute judgement, because he is the Son of Man.
