Psalm 50
Psalm 50
1The mighty one, God the Lord, speaks and summons the earth from the rising of the sun to its setting.
2Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, God shines forth.
3Our God comes and does not keep silence, before him is a devouring fire, and a mighty tempest all around him.
4He calls to the heavens above and to the earth, that he may judge his people:
5“Gather to me my faithful ones, who made a covenant with me by sacrifice!”
6The heavens declare his righteousness, for God himself is judge. Selah
7“Hear, O my people, and I will speak, O Israel, I will testify against you. I am God, your God.
8Not for your sacrifices do I rebuke you; your burnt offerings are continually before me.
9I will not accept a bull from your house, or goats from your folds.
10For every wild animal of the forest is mine, the cattle on a thousand hills.
11I know all the birds of the air, and all that moves in the field is mine.
12“If I were hungry, I would not tell you, for the world and all that is in it is mine.
13Do I eat the flesh of bulls, or drink the blood of goats?
14Offer to God a sacrifice of thanksgiving, and pay your vows to the Most High.
15Call on me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify me.”
16But to the wicked God says: “What right have you to recite my statutes, or take my covenant on your lips?
17For you hate discipline, and you cast my words behind you.
18You make friends with a thief when you see one, and you keep company with adulterers.
19“You give your mouth free rein for evil, and your tongue frames deceit.
20You sit and speak against your kin; you slander your own mother’s child.
21These things you have done and I have been silent; you thought that I was one just like yourself. But now I rebuke you, and lay the charge before you.
22“Mark this, then, you who forget God, or I will tear you apart, and there will be no one to deliver.
23Those who bring thanksgiving as their sacrifice honor me; to those who go the right way I will show the salvation of God.”
Zechariah 7:1-14
Zechariah 7:1-14
7In the fourth year of King Darius, the word of the Lord came to Zechariah on the fourth day of the ninth month, which is Chislev. 2Now the people of Bethel had sent Sharezer and Regem-melech and their men, to entreat the favor of the Lord, 3and to ask the priests of the house of the Lord of hosts and the prophets, “Should I mourn and practice abstinence in the fifth month, as I have done for so many years?” 4Then the word of the Lord of hosts came to me: 5Say to all the people of the land and the priests: When you fasted and lamented in the fifth month and in the seventh, for these seventy years, was it for me that you fasted? 6And when you eat and when you drink, do you not eat and drink only for yourselves? 7Were not these the words that the Lord proclaimed by the former prophets, when Jerusalem was inhabited and in prosperity, along with the towns around it, and when the Negeb and the Shephelah were inhabited?
8The word of the Lord came to Zechariah, saying: 9Thus says the Lord of hosts: Render true judgments, show kindness and mercy to one another; 10do not oppress the widow, the orphan, the alien, or the poor; and do not devise evil in your hearts against one another. 11But they refused to listen, and turned a stubborn shoulder, and stopped their ears in order not to hear. 12They made their hearts adamant in order not to hear the law and the words that the Lord of hosts had sent by his spirit through the former prophets. Therefore great wrath came from the Lord of hosts. 13Just as, when I called, they would not hear, so, when they called, I would not hear, says the Lord of hosts, 14and I scattered them with a whirlwind among all the nations that they had not known. Thus the land they left was desolate, so that no one went to and fro, and a pleasant land was made desolate.
Jude 5-21
Jude 5-215Now I desire to remind you, though you are fully informed, that the Lord, who once for all saved a people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed those who did not believe. 6And the angels who did not keep their own position, but left their proper dwelling, he has kept in eternal chains in deepest darkness for the judgment of the great Day. 7Likewise, Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding cities, which, in the same manner as they, indulged in sexual immorality and pursued unnatural lust, serve as an example by undergoing a punishment of eternal fire.
8Yet in the same way these dreamers also defile the flesh, reject authority, and slander the glorious ones. 9But when the archangel Michael contended with the devil and disputed about the body of Moses, he did not dare to bring a condemnation of slander against him, but said, “The Lord rebuke you!” 10But these people slander whatever they do not understand, and they are destroyed by those things that, like irrational animals, they know by instinct. 11Woe to them! For they go the way of Cain, and abandon themselves to Balaam’s error for the sake of gain, and perish in Korah’s rebellion. 12These are blemishes on your love-feasts, while they feast with you without fear, feeding themselves. They are waterless clouds carried along by the winds; autumn trees without fruit, twice dead, uprooted; 13wild waves of the sea, casting up the foam of their own shame; wandering stars, for whom the deepest darkness has been reserved forever. 14It was also about these that Enoch, in the seventh generation from Adam, prophesied, saying, “See, the Lord is coming with ten thousands of his holy ones,
15to execute judgment on all, and to convict everyone of all the deeds of ungodliness that they have committed in such an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things that ungodly sinners have spoken against him.” 16These are grumblers and malcontents; they indulge their own lusts; they are bombastic in speech, flattering people to their own advantage. 17But you, beloved, must remember the predictions of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ; 18for they said to you, “In the last time there will be scoffers, indulging their own ungodly lusts.” 19It is these worldly people, devoid of the Spirit, who are causing divisions. 20But you, beloved, build yourselves up on your most holy faith; pray in the Holy Spirit; 21keep yourselves in the love of God; look forward to the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life.

Psalm 142
Psalm 142
1With my voice I cry to the Lord; with my voice I make supplication to the Lord.
2I pour out my complaint before him; I tell my trouble before him.
3When my spirit is faint, you know my way. In the path where I walk they have hidden a trap for me.
4Look on my right hand and see— there is no one who takes notice of me; no refuge remains to me; no one cares for me.
5I cry to you, O Lord; I say, “You are my refuge, my portion in the land of the living.”
6Give heed to my cry, for I am brought very low. Save me from my persecutors, for they are too strong for me.
7Bring me out of prison, so that I may give thanks to your name. The righteous will surround me, for you will deal bountifully with me.
Habakkuk 3:1-16
Habakkuk 3:1-16
3A prayer of the prophet Habakkuk according to Shigionoth. 2O Lord, I have heard of your renown, and I stand in awe, O Lord, of your work. In our own time revive it; in our own time make it known; in wrath may you remember mercy.
3God came from Teman, the Holy One from Mount Paran. Selah His glory covered the heavens, and the earth was full of his praise. 4The brightness was like the sun; rays came forth from his hand, where his power lay hidden. 5Before him went pestilence, and plague followed close behind. 6He stopped and shook the earth; he looked and made the nations tremble. The eternal mountains were shattered; along his ancient pathways the everlasting hills sank low. 7I saw the tents of Cushan under affliction; the tent-curtains of the land of Midian trembled. 8Was your wrath against the rivers, O Lord? Or your anger against the rivers, or your rage against the sea, when you drove your horses, your chariots to victory? 9You brandished your naked bow, sated were the arrows at your command. Selah You split the earth with rivers. 10The mountains saw you, and writhed; a torrent of water swept by; the deep gave forth its voice. The sun raised high its hands; 11the moon stood still in its exalted place, at the light of your arrows speeding by, at the gleam of your flashing spear. 12In fury you trod the earth, in anger you trampled nations. 13You came forth to save your people, to save your anointed. You crushed the head of the wicked house, laying it bare from foundation to roof. Selah 14You pierced with his own arrows the head of his warriors, who came like a whirlwind to scatter us, gloating as if ready to devour the poor who were in hiding. 15You trampled the sea with your horses, churning the mighty waters.
16I hear, and I tremble within; my lips quiver at the sound. Rottenness enters into my bones, and my steps tremble beneath me. I wait quietly for the day of calamity to come upon the people who attack us.

O Lord, absolve Your people from their offenses that from the bonds of our sins, which by reason of our frailty we have brought upon ourselves, we may be delivered by Your bountiful goodness; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
First Reading: Jer. 1:1-19
1The words of Jeremiah, the son of Hilkiah, one(A) of the priests who were in(B) Anathoth in the land of Benjamin, 2to whom the word of the LORD came in the days of(C) Josiah the son of Amon, king of Judah, in(D) the thirteenth year of his reign. 3It came also in the days of(E) Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, and(F) until the end of the eleventh year of(G) Zedekiah, the son of Josiah, king of Judah,(H) until the captivity of Jerusalem in the fifth month.
The Call of Jeremiah
4Now the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
5(I) "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you,and before you were born(J) I consecrated you;I appointed you a prophet(K) to the nations."
6Then I said, "Ah, Lord GOD! Behold,(L) I do not know how to speak,(M) for I am only a youth." 7But the LORD said to me,
"Do not say, 'I am only a youth';for to all to whom I send you, you shall go,and(N) whatever I command you, you shall speak. 8(O) Do not be afraid of them,(P) for I am with you to deliver you,
declares the LORD."
9(Q) Then the LORD put out his hand and(R) touched my mouth. And the LORD said to me,
"Behold, I have put(S) my words in your mouth. 10See, I have set you this day(T) over nations and over kingdoms,(U) to pluck up and to break down,to destroy and to overthrow,to build and to plant."
11And the word of the LORD came to me, saying,(V) "Jeremiah, what do you see?" And I said, "I see an almond[a] branch." 12Then the LORD said to me, "You have seen well, for I am watching over my word to perform it."
13The word of the LORD came to me a second time, saying, "What do you see?" And I said, "I see(W) a boiling pot, facing away(X) from the north." 14Then the LORD said to me,(Y) "Out of the north disaster[b] shall be let loose upon all the inhabitants of the land. 15For behold,(Z) I am calling all the tribes of the kingdoms of the north, declares the LORD,(AA) and they shall come, and every one shall set his throne at the entrance of the gates of Jerusalem, against all its walls all around and against all the cities of Judah. 16And(AB) I will declare my judgments against them, for all their evil(AC) in forsaking me.(AD) They have made offerings to other gods and(AE) worshiped the works of their own hands. 17But you,(AF) dress yourself for work;[c] arise, and(AG) say to them everything that I command you.(AH) Do not be dismayed by them, lest I dismay you before them. 18And I, behold, I make you this day(AI) a fortified city,(AJ) an iron pillar, and(AK) bronze walls, against the whole land, against the kings of Judah, its officials, its priests, and the people of the land. 19(AL) They will fight against you, but they shall not prevail against you, for(AM) I am with you, declares the LORD, to deliver you."
Footnotes:Jeremiah 1:11 Almond sounds like the Hebrew for watching (compare verse 12) Jeremiah 1:14 The Hebrew word can mean evil, harm, or disaster, depending on the context; so throughout Jeremiah Jeremiah 1:17 Hebrew gird up your loins

Second Reading: Matt. 21:23-46
The Authority of Jesus Challenged
23(A) And when he entered the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came up to him(B) as he was teaching, and said,(C) "By what authority are you doing these things, and who gave you this authority?" 24Jesus answered them, "I also will ask you one question, and if you tell me the answer, then I also will tell you by what authority I do these things. 25The baptism of John,(D) from where did it come?(E) From heaven or from man?" And they discussed it among themselves, saying, "If we say, 'From heaven,' he will say to us,(F) 'Why then did you not believe him?' 26But if we say, 'From man,'(G) we are afraid of the crowd, for they all hold that John was(H) a prophet." 27So they answered Jesus, "We do not know." And he said to them, "Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.
The Parable of the Two Sons
28(I) "What do you think? A man had two sons. And he went to the first and said, 'Son, go and work in(J) the vineyard today.' 29And he answered, 'I will not,' but afterward he(K) changed his mind and went. 30And he went to the other son and said the same. And he answered, 'I go, sir,' but did not go. 31Which of the two did the will of his father?" They said, "The first." Jesus said to them, "Truly, I say to you,(L) the tax collectors and(M) the prostitutes go into(N) the kingdom of God before you. 32For John came to you(O) in the way of righteousness, and(P) you did not believe him, but(Q) the tax collectors and the prostitutes believed him. And even when you saw it, you did not afterward(R) change your minds and believe him.
The Parable of the Tenants
33(S) "Hear another parable. There was a master of a house who planted(T) a vineyard(U) and put a fence around it and dug a winepress in it and built a tower and(V) leased it to tenants, and(W) went into another country. 34When the season for fruit drew near, he sent his servants[a] to the tenants(X) to get his fruit. 35(Y) And the tenants took his servants and beat one, killed another, and(Z) stoned another. 36(AA) Again he sent other servants, more than the first. And they did the same to them. 37Finally he sent his son to them, saying, 'They will respect my son.' 38But when the tenants saw the son, they said to themselves,(AB) 'This is the heir. Come,(AC) let us kill him and have his inheritance.' 39And they took him and(AD) threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. 40(AE) When therefore the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?" 41They said to him,(AF) "He will put those wretches to a miserable death and(AG) let out the vineyard to other tenants who will give him the fruits in their seasons."
42Jesus said to them, (AH) "Have you never read in the Scriptures:
(AI) "'The stone that the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone;[b]this was the Lord’s doing,
and it is marvelous in our eyes'?
43Therefore I tell you, the kingdom of God(AJ) will be taken away from you and given to a people(AK) producing its fruits. 44And(AL) the one who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; and(AM) when it falls on anyone, it will crush him."[c]
45When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard his parables, they perceived that he was speaking about them. 46And(AN) although they were seeking to arrest him,(AO) they feared the crowds, because they held him to be(AP) a prophet.
