Psalm 123

Psalm 123

1To you I lift up my eyes, O you who are enthroned in the heavens!

2As the eyes of servants look to the hand of their master, as the eyes of a maid to the hand of her mistress, so our eyes look to the Lord our God, until he has mercy upon us.

3Have mercy upon us, O Lord, have mercy upon us, for we have had more than enough of contempt.

4Our soul has had more than its fill of the scorn of those who are at ease, of the contempt of the proud.

Job 20:1-11

Job 20:1-11

20Then Zophar the Naamathite answered: 2“Pay attention! My thoughts urge me to answer, because of the agitation within me. 3I hear censure that insults me, and a spirit beyond my understanding answers me. 4Do you not know this from of old, ever since mortals were placed on earth, 5that the exulting of the wicked is short, and the joy of the godless is but for a moment? 6Even though they mount up high as the heavens, and their head reaches to the clouds, 7they will perish forever like their own dung; those who have seen them will say, ‘Where are they?’ 8They will fly away like a dream, and not be found; they will be chased away like a vision of the night. 9The eye that saw them will see them no more, nor will their place behold them any longer.

10Their children will seek the favor of the poor, and their hands will give back their wealth. 11Their bodies, once full of youth, will lie down in the dust with them.

2 Peter 1:16-21

2 Peter 1:16-21

16For we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we had been eyewitnesses of his majesty. 17For he received honor and glory from God the Father when that voice was conveyed to him by the Majestic Glory, saying, “This is my Son, my Beloved, with whom I am well pleased.” 18We ourselves heard this voice come from heaven, while we were with him on the holy mountain.

19So we have the prophetic message more fully confirmed. You will do well to be attentive to this as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. 20First of all you must understand this, that no prophecy of scripture is a matter of one’s own interpretation, 21because no prophecy ever came by human will, but men and women moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.

Semicontinuous series (related to the lessons for the Saturday service)

Psalm 98

Psalm 98

1O sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous things. His right hand and his holy arm have gotten him victory.

2The Lord has made known his victory; he has revealed his vindication in the sight of the nations.

3He has remembered his steadfast love and faithfulness to the house of Israel. All the ends of the earth have seen the victory of our God.

4Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth; break forth into joyous song and sing praises.

5Sing praises to the Lord with the lyre, with the lyre and the sound of melody.

6With trumpets and the sound of the horn make a joyful noise before the King, the Lord.

7Let the sea roar, and all that fills it; the world and those who live in it.

8Let the floods clap their hands; let the hills sing together for joy

9at the presence of the Lord, for he is coming to judge the earth. He will judge the world with righteousness, and the peoples with equity.

Haggai 2:10-19

Haggai 2:10-19

10On the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, in the second year of Darius, the word of the Lord came by the prophet Haggai, saying: 11Thus says the Lord of hosts: Ask the priests for a ruling: 12If one carries consecrated meat in the fold of one’s garment, and with the fold touches bread, or stew, or wine, or oil, or any kind of food, does it become holy? The priests answered, “No.” 13Then Haggai said, “If one who is unclean by contact with a dead body touches any of these, does it become unclean?” The priests answered, “Yes, it becomes unclean.” 14Haggai then said, So is it with this people, and with this nation before me, says the Lord; and so with every work of their hands; and what they offer there is unclean. 15But now, consider what will come to pass from this day on. Before a stone was placed upon a stone in the Lord’s temple, 16how did you fare? When one came to a heap of twenty measures, there were but ten; when one came to the winevat to draw fifty measures, there were but twenty. 17I struck you and all the products of your toil with blight and mildew and hail; yet you did not return to me, says the Lord. 18Consider from this day on, from the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month. Since the day that the foundation of the Lord’s temple was laid, consider: 19Is there any seed left in the barn? Do the vine, the fig tree, the pomegranate, and the olive tree still yield nothing? From this day on I will bless you.

[-] [+] Monday of Third Last Sunday

Johannes von Staupitz, Luther's Father Confessor

November 8, 2010 - Monday of the Third-Last Week

Today's Reading: Exodus 32:1-20

Daily Lectionary: Jeremiah 20:1-18; Matthew 24:29-51

So the LORD relented from the harm which He said He would do to His people. (Exodus 32:14)

In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. Oh, they had done it this time! It was bad enough that the people of Israel had complained about being dragged out of Egypt against their will. Now they had gone and done the unthinkable.

While Moses was speaking with God on Sinai, they talked Aaron into building them an idol—the golden calf, the ‘gateway god’ into the Egyptian pantheon.

All the while, the mountain is rumbling and smoking and flashing with the presence of Almighty God on its peak, and the people can think of nothing better to do than turn their back on Him and His messenger.

God knows what’s happening, and He is ready to utterly destroy the people and start over with just Moses. But Moses does something that makes him a picture of Jesus. He stands his ground and calls on God to be merciful, to not destroy the people He has saved so many times already.

God relents and doesn’t destroy the people of Israel—He has mercy on them and lets them live to let their descendants take possession of the Promised Land.

This is almost exactly what Jesus has done for you. Jesus not only took on your sin, He also stood before God and took the brunt of God’s wrath for you. Unlike the Israelites, though, you didn’t have to drink the cup of wrath and ashes. Jesus did all of that for you, so that you would only be offered the cup of blessing—the cup of salvation that holds His blood, blood that washed away the sin that caused God’s wrath.

He stands there before God today, pleading for you. His sacrifice on the cross will always be enough. Never again will God turn His wrath on his faithful children, because when He looks at you, He sees Jesus. In the Name of Jesus. Amen.

Frail children of dust and feeble as frail, In Thee do we trust, nor find Thee to fail. Thy mercies, how tender, how firm to the end, Our maker, defender, redeemer, and friend! (LSB 804:5)

Almighty God, we implore You, show Your mercy to Your humble servants that we, who put no trust in our own merits, may not be dealt with after the severity of Your judgment but according to Your mercy; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

First Reading: Jer. 20:1-18

Jeremiah Persecuted by Pashhur

1Now(A) Pashhur the priest, the son of(B) Immer, who was(C) chief officer in the house of the LORD, heard Jeremiah prophesying these things. 2Then(D) Pashhur beat Jeremiah the prophet, and put him(E) in the stocks that were in the upper(F) Benjamin Gate of the house of the LORD. 3The next day, when(G) Pashhur released Jeremiah from the stocks, Jeremiah said to him, "The LORD does not call your name Pashhur, but Terror On Every Side. 4For thus says the LORD: Behold, I will make you(H) a terror to yourself and to all your friends. They shall fall by the sword of their enemies while you look on. And I will give all Judah into the hand of the king of Babylon. He shall carry them captive to Babylon, and shall strike them down with the sword. 5Moreover,(I) I will give all the wealth of the city, all its gains, all its(J) prized belongings, and all the treasures of the kings of Judah into the hand of their enemies, who shall plunder them and seize them and carry them to Babylon. 6And you,(K) Pashhur, and all who dwell in your house, shall go into captivity. To Babylon you shall go, and there you shall die, and there you shall be buried, you and all your friends,(L) to whom you have prophesied falsely."

7O LORD,(M) you have deceived me,

and I was deceived;(N) you are stronger than I,

and you have prevailed.(O) I have become a laughingstock all the day;

everyone mocks me. 8For whenever I speak, I cry out,

I shout,(P) "Violence and destruction!"For(Q) the word of the LORD has become for me

(R) a reproach and derision all day long. 9If I say, "I will not mention him,

or speak any more in his name,"(S) there is in my heart as it were a burning fire

shut up in my bones,and(T) I am weary with holding it in,

and I cannot. 10(U) For I hear many whispering.

(V) Terror is on every side!"Denounce him!(W) Let us denounce him!"

say all my(X) close friends,

(Y) watching for(Z) my fall."Perhaps he will be deceived;

then(AA) we can overcome him

and take our revenge on him." 11But(AB) the LORD is with me as a dread warrior;

therefore my persecutors will stumble;

(AC) they will not overcome me.(AD) They will be greatly shamed,

for they will not succeed.Their eternal dishonor

will never be forgotten. 12O LORD of hosts, who tests the righteous,

(AE) who sees the heart and the mind,[a]let me see your vengeance upon them,

for to you have I committed my cause.

13(AF) Sing to the LORD;

praise the LORD!For he has delivered the life of the needy

from the hand of evildoers.

14(AG) Cursed be the day

on which I was born!The day when my mother bore me,

let it not be blessed! 15Cursed be the man who brought the news to my father,"A son is born to you,"

(AH) making him very glad. 16Let that man be like(AI) the cities

that the LORD overthrew without pity;(AJ) let him hear a cry in the morning

and an alarm at noon, 17(AK) because he did not kill me in the womb;

so my mother would have been my grave,

and her womb forever great. 18(AL) Why did I come out from the womb

(AM) to see toil and sorrow,

and spend my days in shame?

Second Reading: Matt. 24:29-51

The Coming of the Son of Man

29"Immediately after(A) the tribulation of those days(B) the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and(C) the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 30Then(D) will appear in heaven(E) the sign of the Son of Man, and then(F) all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and(G) they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven(H) with power and great glory. 31And(I) he will send out his angels with a loud(J) trumpet call, and they will(K) gather(L) his elect from(M) the four winds,(N) from one end of heaven to the other.

The Lesson of the Fig Tree

32"From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts out its leaves, you know that summer is near. 33So also, when you see all these things, you know that he is near,(O) at the very gates. 34(P) Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place. 35(Q) Heaven and earth will pass away, but(R) my words will not pass away.

No One Knows That Day and Hour

36"But concerning that day and hour(S) no one knows, not even the angels of heaven,(T) nor the Son,[a](U) but the Father only. 37(V) For as were the days of Noah,(W) so will be the coming of the Son of Man. 38(X) For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking,(Y) marrying and giving in marriage, until(Z) the day when Noah entered the ark, 39and they were unaware until the flood came and swept them all away,(AA) so will be the coming of the Son of Man. 40Then two men will be in the field; one will be taken and one left. 41(AB) Two women will be grinding(AC) at the mill; one will be taken and one left. 42Therefore,(AD) stay awake, for you do not know on what day(AE) your Lord is coming. 43(AF) But know this, that if the master of the house had known in what part of the night(AG) the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and would not have let his house be broken into. 44Therefore you also must be(AH) ready, for(AI) the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.

45"Who then is(AJ) the faithful and(AK) wise servant,[b] whom his master has set over his household, to give them their food at the proper time? 46(AL) Blessed is that servant whom his master will find so doing when he comes. 47Truly, I say to you,(AM) he will set him over all his possessions. 48But if that wicked servant says to himself, 'My master(AN) is delayed,' 49and begins to beat his fellow servants[c] and eats and drinks with(AO) drunkards, 50the master of that servant will come(AP) on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he does not know 51and will cut him in pieces and put him with the hypocrites. In that place(AQ) there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Monday Father Reading

"Beware brothers, that if you who are of the faithful stay away from the Lord's Body, it is to be feared that you might die of hunger. But if you receive it unworthily, it is to be feared that you might eat it to your condemnation." [St. Eligius. "Homily 7 on the Lord's Supper." 7th Century]
