Morning Psalm 135

1Praise the LORD!

Praise the name of the LORD;

give praise, O servants of the LORD,

2you that stand in the house of the LORD,

in the courts of the house of our God.

3Praise the LORD, for the LORD is good;

sing to his name, for he is gracious.

4For the LORD has chosen Jacob for himself,

Israel as his own possession.

5For I know that the LORD is great;

our Lord is above all gods.

6Whatever the LORD pleases he does,

in heaven and on earth,

in the seas and all deeps.

7He it is who makes the clouds rise at the end of the earth;

he makes lightnings for the rain

and brings out the wind from his storehouses.

8He it was who struck down the firstborn of Egypt,

both human beings and animals;

9he sent signs and wonders

into your midst, O Egypt,

against Pharaoh and all his servants.

10He struck down many nations

and killed mighty kings —

11Sihon, king of the Amorites,

and Og, king of Bashan,

and all the kingdoms of Canaan —

12and gave their land as a heritage,

a heritage to his people Israel.

13Your name, O LORD, endures forever,

your renown, O LORD, throughout all ages.

14For the LORD will vindicate his people,

and have compassion on his servants.

15The idols of the nations are silver and gold,

the work of human hands.

16They have mouths, but they do not speak;

they have eyes, but they do not see;

17they have ears, but they do not hear,

and there is no breath in their mouths.

18Those who make them

and all who trust them

shall become like them.

19O house of Israel, bless the LORD!

O house of Aaron, bless the LORD!

20O house of Levi, bless the LORD!

You that fear the LORD, bless the LORD!

21Blessed be the LORD from Zion,

he who resides in Jerusalem.

Praise the LORD!

Morning Psalm 145

1I will extol you, my God and King,

and bless your name forever and ever.

2Every day I will bless you,

and praise your name forever and ever.

3Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised;

his greatness is unsearchable.

4One generation shall laud your works to another,

and shall declare your mighty acts.

5On the glorious splendor of your majesty,

and on your wondrous works, I will meditate.

6The might of your awesome deeds shall be proclaimed,

and I will declare your greatness.

7They shall celebrate the fame of your abundant goodness,

and shall sing aloud of your righteousness.

8The Lord is gracious and merciful,

slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.

9The Lord is good to all,

and his compassion is over all that he has made.

10All your works shall give thanks to you, O Lord,

and all your faithful shall bless you.

11They shall speak of the glory of your kingdom,

and tell of your power,

12to make known to all people your mighty deeds,

and the glorious splendor of your kingdom.

13Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom,

and your dominion endures throughout all generations.

The Lord is faithful in all his words,

and gracious in all his deeds.

14The Lord upholds all who are falling,

and raises up all who are bowed down.

15The eyes of all look to you,

and you give them their food in due season.

16You open your hand,

satisfying the desire of every living thing.

17The Lord is just in all his ways,

and kind in all his doings.

18The Lord is near to all who call on him,

to all who call on him in truth.

19He fulfills the desire of all who fear him;

he also hears their cry, and saves them.

20The Lord watches over all who love him,

but all the wicked he will destroy.

21My mouth will speak the praise of the Lord,

and all flesh will bless his holy name forever and ever.

First Reading Joel 1:15-2:2

1:15Alas for the day!

For the day of the LORD is near,

and as destruction from the Almighty it comes.

16Is not the food cut off

before our eyes,

joy and gladness

from the house of our God?

17The seed shrivels under the clods,

the storehouses are desolate;

the granaries are ruined

because the grain has failed.

18How the animals groan!

The herds of cattle wander about

because there is no pasture for them;

even the flocks of sheep are dazed.

19To you, O LORD, I cry.

For fire has devoured

the pastures of the wilderness,

and flames have burned

all the trees of the field.

20Even the wild animals cry to you

because the watercourses are dried up,

and fire has devoured

the pastures of the wilderness.

2:1Blow the trumpet in Zion;

sound the alarm on my holy mountain!

Let all the inhabitants of the land tremble,

for the day of the LORD is coming, it is near &mdsah;

2a day of darkness and gloom,

a day of clouds and thick darkness!

Like blackness spread upon the mountains

a great and powerful army comes;

their like has never been from of old,

nor will be again after them

in ages to come.

Second Reading Revelation 18:15-24

15The merchants of these wares, who gained wealth from her, will stand far off, in fear of her torment, weeping and mourning aloud, 16"Alas, alas, the great city, clothed in fine linen, in purple and scarlet, adorned with gold, with jewels, and with pearls! 17For in one hour all this wealth has been laid waste!" And all shipmasters and seafarers, sailors and all whose trade is on the sea, stood far off 18and cried out as they saw the smoke of her burning, "What city was like the great city?" 19And they threw dust on their heads, as they wept and mourned, crying out, "Alas, alas, the great city, where all who had ships at sea grew rich by her wealth! For in one hour she has been laid waste. 20Rejoice over her, O heaven, you saints and apostles and prophets! For God has given judgment for you against her."

21Then a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone and threw it into the sea, saying, "With such violence Babylon the great city will be thrown down, and will be found no more; 22and the sound of harpists and minstrels and of flutists and trumpeters will be heard in you no more; and an artisan of any trade will be found in you no more; and the sound of the millstone will be heard in you no more; 23and the light of a lamp will shine in you no more; and the voice of bridegroom and bride will be heard in you no more; for your merchants were the magnates of the earth, and all nations were deceived by your sorcery. 24And in you was found the blood of prophets and of saints, and of all who have been slaughtered on earth."

Gospel Luke 14:12-24

12He said also to the one who had invited him, "When you give a luncheon or a dinner, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbors, in case they may invite you in return, and you would be repaid. 13But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind. 14And you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you, for you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous."

15One of the dinner guests, on hearing this, said to him, "lessed is anyone who will eat bread in the kingdom of God!" 16Then Jesus said to him, "Someone gave a great dinner and invited many. 17At the time for the dinner he sent his slave to say to those who had been invited, 'Come; for everything is ready now.' 18But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said to him, 'I have bought a piece of land, and I must go out and see it; please accept my regrets.' 19Another said, 'I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I am going to try them out; please accept my regrets.' 20Another said, 'I have just been married, and therefore I cannot come.' 21So the slave returned and reported this to his master. Then the owner of the house became angry and said to his slave, 'Go out at once into the streets and lanes of the town and bring in the poor, the crippled, the blind, and the lame.' 22And the slave said, 'Sir, what you ordered has been done, and there is still room." 23Then the master said to the slave, 'Go out into the roads and lanes, and compel people to come in, so that my house may be filled. 24For I tell you, none of those who were invited will taste my dinner.'"

Evening Psalm 97

1The LORD is king! Let the earth rejoice;

let the many coastlands be glad!

2Clouds and thick darkness are all around him;

righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne.

3Fire goes before him,

and consumes his adversaries on every side.

4His lightnings light up the world;

the earth sees and trembles.

5The mountains melt like wax before the LORD,

before the Lord of all the earth.

6The heavens proclaim his righteousness;

and all the peoples behold his glory.

7All worshipers of images are put to shame,

those who make their boast in worthless idols;

all gods bow down before him.

8Zion hears and is glad,

and the towns of Judah rejoice,

because of your judgments, O God.

9For you, O LORD, are most high over all the earth;

you are exalted far above all gods.

10The LORD loves those who hate evil;

he guards the lives of his faithful;

he rescues them from the hand of the wicked.

11Light dawns for the righteous,

and joy for the upright in heart.

12Rejoice in the LORD, O you righteous,

and give thanks to his holy name!

Evening Psalm 112

1Praise the LORD!

Happy are those who fear the LORD,

who greatly delight in his commandments.

2Their descendants will be mighty in the land;

the generation of the upright will be blessed.

3Wealth and riches are in their houses,

and their righteousness endures forever.

4They rise in the darkness as a light for the upright;

they are gracious, merciful, and righteous.

5It is well with those who deal generously and lend,

who conduct their affairs with justice.

6For the righteous will never be moved;

they will be remembered forever.

7They are not afraid of evil tidings;

their hearts are firm, secure in the LORD.

8Their hearts are steady, they will not be afraid;

in the end they will look in triumph on their foes.

9They have distributed freely, they have given to the poor;

their righteousness endures forever; their horn is exalted in honor.

10The wicked see it and are angry;

they gnash their teeth and melt away;

the desire of the wicked comes to nothing.
