Opening Prayer

O Lord our God and our creator who made all through your Word and formed man by your wisdom and made him to become prince over all your creatures to rule them in righteousness and truth: Grant us your grace to use your gift wisely and with thankfulness. Amen. Our father... etc.

Psalm 38: 1-end

38:1 O lord, rebuke me not in your wrath: neither chasten me in your hot displeasure. 38:2 For your arrows stick fast in me, and your hand presses me sore. 38:3 There is no soundness in my flesh because of your anger; neither is there any rest in my bones because of my sin. 38:4 For mine iniquities are gone over mine head: as an heavy burden they are too heavy for me. 38:5 My wounds stink and are corrupt because of my foolishness. 38:6 I am troubled; I am bowed down greatly; I go mourning all the day long. 38:7 For my loins are filled with a loathsome disease: and there is no soundness in my flesh. 38:8 I am feeble and sore broken: I have roared by reason of the disquietness of my heart. 38:9 Lord, all my desire is before thee; and my groaning is not hid from thee. 38:10 My heart pants, my strength fails me: as for the light of mine eyes, it also is gone from me. 38:11 My lovers and my friends stand aloof from my sore; and my kinsmen stand afar off. 38:12 They also that seek after my life lay snares for me: and they that seek my hurt speak mischievous things, and imagine deceits all the day long. 38:13 But I, as a deaf man, heard not; and I was as a dumb man that opens not his mouth. 38:14 Thus I was as a man that hears not, and in whose mouth are no reproofs. 38:15 For in thee, O Lord, do I hope: thou wilt hear, O Lord my God. 38:16 For I said, Hear me, lest otherwise they should rejoice over me: when my foot slips, they magnify themselves against me. 38:17 For I am ready to halt, and my sorrow is continually before me. 38:18 For I will declare mine iniquity; I will be sorry for my sin. 38:19 But mine enemies are lively, and they are strong: and they that hate me wrongfully are multiplied. 38:20 They also that render evil for good are mine adversaries; because I follow the thing that good is. 38:21 Forsake me not, O Lord: O my God, be not far from me. 38:22 Make haste to help me, O Lord my salvation. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, As it was in the beginning…

Psalm 39: 1-13

39:1 I said, I will take heed to my ways, that I sin not with my tongue: I will keep my mouth with a bridle, while the wicked is before me. 39:2 I was dumb with silence, I held my peace, even from good; and my sorrow was stirred. 39:3 My heart was hot within me, while I was musing the fire burned: then spoke I with my tongue, 39:4 Lord, make me to know mine end, and the measure of my days, what it is: that I may know how frail I am. 39:5 Behold, you have made my days as an handbreadth; and mine age is as nothing before thee: verily every man at his best state is altogether vanity. Selah. 39:6 Surely every man walks in a vain shew: surely they are disquieted in vain: he heapeth up riches, and knows not who shall gather them. 39:7 And now, Lord, what wait I for? my hope is in thee. 39:8 Deliver me from all my transgressions: make me not the reproach of the foolish. 39:9 I was dumb, I opened not my mouth; because thou didst it. 39:10 Remove your stroke away from me: I am consumed by the blow of your hand. 39:11 When thou with rebukes dost correct man for iniquity, you make his beauty to consume away like a moth: surely every man is vanity. Selah. 39:12 Hear my prayer, O Lord, and give ear to my cry; hold not your peace at my tears: for I am a stranger with thee, and a sojourner, as all my fathers were. 39:13 O spare me, that I may recover strength, before I go hence, and be no more. Glory be to the Father and to the Son…

Psalm 40: 1-17

40:1 I waited patiently for the Lord; and he inclined to me, and heard my cry. 40:2 He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings. 40:3 And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise to our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the Lord. 40:4 Blessed is that man that makes the Lord his trust, and respecteth not the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies. 40:5 Many, O Lord my God, are your wonderful works which you have done, and your thoughts which are to us-ward: they cannot be reckoned up in order to thee: if I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be numbered. 40:6 Sacrifice and offering thou didst not desire; mine ears have you opened: burnt offering and sin offering have you not required. 40:7 Then said I, Lo, I come: in the volume of the book it is written of me, 40:8 I delight to do your will, O my God: yea, your law is within my heart. 40:9 I have preached righteousness in the great congregation: lo, I have not refrained my lips, O Lord, thou knowest. 40:10 I have not hid your righteousness within my heart; I have declared your faithfulness and your salvation: I have not concealed your loving-kindness and your truth from the great congregation. 40:11 Withhold not thou your tender mercies from me, O Lord: let your loving-kindness and your truth continually preserve me. 40:12 For innumerable evils have compassed me about: mine iniquities have taken hold upon me, so that I am not able to look up; they are more than the hairs of mine head: therefore my heart fails me. 40:13 Be pleased, O Lord, to deliver me: O Lord, make haste to help me. 40:14 Let them be ashamed and confounded together that seek after my soul to destroy it; let them be driven backward and put to shame that wish me evil. 40:15 Let them be desolate for a reward of their shame that say to me, Aha, aha. 40:16 Let all those that seek thee rejoice and be glad in thee: let such as love your salvation say continually, The Lord be magnified. 40:17 But I am poor and needy; yet the Lord thinketh upon me: you are my help and my deliverer; make no tarrying, O my God. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Scripture Readings

1st Reading

Isaiah 45:22-23

45:22 Look to me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else. I have sworn by myself, the word is gone out of my mouth in righteousness, and shall not return, That to me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear. He who receives the prophet by the name of the prophet shall receive the prophet reward. Amen

2nd Reading

Jude 1: 17-23

1:17 But, beloved, remember ye the words which were spoken before of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ; How that they told you there should be mockers in the last time, who should walk after their own ungodly lusts. These be they who separate themselves, sensual, having not the Spirit. But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost, Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to eternal life. And of some have compassion, making a difference: And others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire; hating even the garment spotted by the flesh. He who receives the Apostle by the name of the Apostle shall receive the Apostle s reward. Amen

The Gospel of St. John 14:18-24

14:18 I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you. Yet a little while, and the world sees me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also. At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you. He that hath my commandments, and keeps them, he it is that loves me: and he that loves me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him. Judas saith to him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself to us, and not to the world? Jesus answered and said to him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come to him, and make our abode with him. He that loves me not keeps not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father's which sent me. He that believeth in the Son hath everlasting life…

Concluding Prayer

O Lord our heavenly Father, who have created us in your image and likeness, we ask you to send us your Holy Spirit, to guide us in the way of peace and righteousness and life. Amen. Our Father…

In the name of the Father………

Opening Prayer

Look with your great favour on us, your family, Lord, and help us to take your word to our hearts in faith and obedience and may: your word yield a harvest in us through our perseverance. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Our Father…,

Psalm 41: 1-13

41:1 Blessed is he that considers the poor: the Lord will deliver him in time of trouble. 41:2 The Lord will preserve him, and keep him alive; and he shall be blessed upon the earth: and thou wilt not deliver him to the will of his enemies. 41:3 The Lord will strengthen him upon the bed of languishing: thou wilt make all his bed in his sickness. 41:4 I said, Lord, be merciful to me: heal my soul; for I have sinned against thee. 41:5 Mine enemies speak evil of me, When shall he die, and his name perish? 41:6 And if he come to see me, he speaks vanity: his heart gathers iniquity to itself; when he goes abroad, he tells it. 41:7 All that hate me whisper together against me: against me do they devise my hurt. 41:8 An evil disease, say they, cleaves fast to him: and now that he lies he shall rise up no more. 41:9 Yea, mine own familiar friend, in whom I trusted, which did eat of my bread, hath lifted up his heel against me. 41:10 But thou, O Lord, be merciful to me, and raise me up, that I may requite them. 41:11 By this I know that thou favourest me, because mine enemy doth not triumph over me. 41:12 And as for me, thou upholdest me in mine integrity, and settest me before your face forever. 41:13 Blessed be the Lord God of Israel from everlasting, and to everlasting. Amen, and Amen. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, As it was in the beginning….

Psalm 42: 1-11

42:1 As the hart pants after the water brooks, so pants my soul after thee, O God. 42:2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God: when shall I come and appear before God? 42:3 My tears have been my meat day and night, while they continually say to me, Where is your God? 42:4 When I remember these things, I pour out my soul in me: for I had gone with the multitude, I went with them to the house of God, with the voice of joy and praise, with a multitude that kept holyday. 42:5 Why cast down, O my soul? and why are you disquieted in me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance. 42:6 O my God, my soul is cast down within me: therefore will I remember thee from the land of Jordan, and of the Hermonites, from the hill Mizar. 42:7 Deep calls to deep at the noise of your waterspouts: all your waves and your billows are gone over me. 42:8 Yet the Lord will command his loving-kindness in the day time, and in the night his song shall be with me, and my prayer to the God of my life. 42:9 I will say to God my rock, Why have you forgotten me? why go In mourning because of the oppression of the enemy? 42:10 As with a sword in my bones, mine enemies reproach me; while they say daily to me, Where is your God? 42:11 Why cast down, O my soul? and why are you disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, As it was in the beginning…

Psalm 43:1-5

43:1 Judge me, O God, and plead my cause against an ungodly nation: O deliver me from the deceitful and unjust man. 43:2 For you are the God of my strength: why dost thou cast me off? why go I mourning because of the oppression of the enemy? 43:3 O send out your light and your truth: let them lead me; let them bring me to your holy hill, and to your tabernacles. 43:4 Then will I go to the altar of God, to God my exceeding joy: yea, upon the harp will I praise thee, O God my God. 43:5 Why cast down, O my soul? and why are you disquieted within me? hope in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, As it was in the beginning…

Scripture Readings

1st Reading

Sirach 18: 1-5

18:1 He who lives forever created the whole universe; the Lord alone will be declared righteous. To none has he given power to proclaim his works; and who can search out his mighty deeds? Who can measure his majestic power? And who can fully recount his mercies? He who receives the prophet by the name of the prophet shall receive the prophet’s reward. Amen

Jude 1: 17-23

1:17 But, beloved, remember ye the words which were spoken before of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ; How that they told you there should be mockers in the last time, who should walk after their own ungodly lusts. 3rd Reading (Chant)

Psalm 34: 1-2

34:1 I will bless the Lord at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth. 34:2 My soul shall make her boast in the Lord: the humble shall hear thereof, and be glad. Halleluiah! Stand and harken to the Holy Gospel, the message of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

4th Reading

The Gospel of St. John 15: 1-7

15:1 I am the true vine, and my Father is the vine grower. Every branch in me that bears not fruit he takes away: and every branch that bears fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit. Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken to you. Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abides in me, and I in him, the same brings forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. If a man abides not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned. If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done to you. He that believeth in the Son hath everlasting life…

Concluding prayer

O our Almighty Father and God, to whom the whole world with all its goodness and beauty belongs, grant us your divine grace to give thanks and praise for your support throughout this day: in your great mercy forgive the faults we have committed through human frailty. Amen. Our Father…,.

THE SECOND MONTH

TEKEMT 28

(November 07)

IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER AND THE SON AND THE HOLY SPIRIT,

ONE GOD. AMEN.

On this day the great saints Marcianus and Mercurius became martyrs. These holy men were disciples of Saint Paul the martyr, Archbishop of the city of Constantine. When the Emperor Constantine, the son of Constantine the Great, reigned, the belief of the infidel Arius waxed strong and he made himself the enemy of Abba Paul, Archbishop of the city of Constantine, and he banished him to the country of Armenia, and strangled him and killed him there. And saints Marcianus and Mercurius wrote jointly on the day of the death of Saint Paul, and cursed the emperor, and they said of him that he believed the faith of Arius the infidel, and they anathematized Arius and the emperor. And a certain wicked man went and made accusations against them to the emperor, and said unto him, “They have cursed thee and they have cursed Arius.” Now the emperor was dwelling in a certain village, and he sent and had the saints brought to him, and he commanded [his soldiers] to slay them with the sword, and they slew them and buried them where they had been slain, and their bodies remained in that place until the days of John of the Golden Mouth (Chrysostom). And when John heard the history of them he sent and brought their honorable bodies into the city of Constantine; and he built a beautiful church for them, and he translated their bodies and laid them in it, and the people made a great feast as at this day. Salutation to Marcianus and Mercurius, disciples of Paul the archbishop.

And on this day also are commemorated Abba Maksu, and Macarius, and the death of Japheth the son of Noah, whom his father blessed, saying, “God shall make broad the land of Japheth.”

And on this day also died Saint Abba Yam’ata, who was one of the Nine Saints. Salutation to Yam’ata, whose body was buried in a rock on the top of a mountain.

Salutation to Abraham, who separated himself from the Gentiles, and to Jacob, and to Isaac. [This paragraph is not in the Bodleian MS.]

Glory be to God Who is glorified in His Saints. Amen.
