Psalm 17:1-9

Psalm 17

1Hear a just cause, O Lord; attend to my cry; give ear to my prayer from lips free of deceit.

2From you let my vindication come; let your eyes see the right.

3If you try my heart, if you visit me by night, if you test me, you will find no wickedness in me; my mouth does not transgress.

4As for what others do, by the word of your lips I have avoided the ways of the violent.

5My steps have held fast to your paths; my feet have not slipped.

6I call upon you, for you will answer me, O God; incline your ear to me, hear my words.

7Wondrously show your steadfast love, O savior of those who seek refuge from their adversaries at your right hand.

8Guard me as the apple of the eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings,

9from the wicked who despoil me, my deadly enemies who surround me.

Genesis 38:1-26

genesis 38:1-26

38It happened at that time that Judah went down from his brothers and settled near a certain Adullamite whose name was Hirah. 2There Judah saw the daughter of a certain Canaanite whose name was Shua; he married her and went in to her. 3She conceived and bore a son; and he named him Er. 4Again she conceived and bore a son whom she named Onan. 5Yet again she bore a son, and she named him Shelah. She was in Chezib when she bore him. 6Judah took a wife for Er his firstborn; her name was Tamar. 7But Er, Judah’s firstborn, was wicked in the sight of the Lord, and the Lord put him to death. 8Then Judah said to Onan, “Go in to your brother’s wife and perform the duty of a brother-in-law to her; raise up offspring for your brother.” 9But since Onan knew that the offspring would not be his, he spilled his semen on the ground whenever he went in to his brother’s wife, so that he would not give offspring to his brother. 10What he did was displeasing in the sight of the Lord, and he put him to death also. 11Then Judah said to his daughter-in-law Tamar, “Remain a widow in your father’s house until my son Shelah grows up” —for he feared that he too would die, like his brothers. So Tamar went to live in her father’s house.

12In course of time the wife of Judah, Shua’s daughter, died; when Judah’s time of mourning was over, he went up to Timnah to his sheepshearers, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite. 13When Tamar was told, “Your father-in-law is going up to Timnah to shear his sheep,” 14she put off her widow’s garments, put on a veil, wrapped herself up, and sat down at the entrance to Enaim, which is on the road to Timnah. She saw that Shelah was grown up, yet she had not been given to him in marriage. 15When Judah saw her, he thought her to be a prostitute, for she had covered her face. 16He went over to her at the road side, and said, “Come, let me come in to you,” for he did not know that she was his daughter-in-law. She said, “What will you give me, that you may come in to me?” 17He answered, “I will send you a kid from the flock.” And she said, “Only if you give me a pledge, until you send it.” 18He said, “What pledge shall I give you?” She replied, “Your signet and your cord, and the staff that is in your hand.” So he gave them to her, and went in to her, and she conceived by him. 19Then she got up and went away, and taking off her veil she put on the garments of her widowhood. 20When Judah sent the kid by his friend the Adullamite, to recover the pledge from the woman, he could not find her. 21He asked the townspeople, “Where is the temple prostitute who was at Enaim by the wayside?” But they said, “No prostitute has been here.” 22So he returned to Judah, and said, “I have not found her; moreover the townspeople said, ‘No prostitute has been here.’“ 23Judah replied, “Let her keep the things as her own, otherwise we will be laughed at; you see, I sent this kid, and you could not find her.”

24About three months later Judah was told, “Your daughter-in-law Tamar has played the whore; moreover she is pregnant as a result of whoredom.” And Judah said, “Bring her out, and let her be burned.” 25As she was being brought out, she sent word to her father-in-law, “It was the owner of these who made me pregnant.” And she said, “Take note, please, whose these are, the signet and the cord and the staff.” 26Then Judah acknowledged them and said, “She is more in the right than I, since I did not give her to my son Shelah.” And he did not lie with her again.

Acts 24:10-23

Acts 24:10-23

10When the governor motioned to him to speak, Paul replied: “I cheerfully make my defense, knowing that for many years you have been a judge over this nation. 11As you can find out, it is not more than twelve days since I went up to worship in Jerusalem. 12They did not find me disputing with anyone in the temple or stirring up a crowd either in the synagogues or throughout the city. 13Neither can they prove to you the charge that they now bring against me. 14But this I admit to you, that according to the Way, which they call a sect, I worship the God of our ancestors, believing everything laid down according to the law or written in the prophets. 15I have a hope in God—a hope that they themselves also accept—that there will be a resurrection of both the righteous and the unrighteous. 16Therefore I do my best always to have a clear conscience toward God and all people. 17Now after some years I came to bring alms to my nation and to offer sacrifices. 18While I was doing this, they found me in the temple, completing the rite of purification, without any crowd or disturbance. 19But there were some Jews from Asia—they ought to be here before you to make an accusation, if they have anything against me. 20Or let these men here tell what crime they had found when I stood before the council, 21unless it was this one sentence that I called out while standing before them, ‘It is about the resurrection of the dead that I am on trial before you today.’”

22But Felix, who was rather well informed about the Way, adjourned the hearing with the comment, “When Lysias the tribune comes down, I will decide your case.” 23Then he ordered the centurion to keep him in custody, but to let him have some liberty and not to prevent any of his friends from taking care of his needs.

Psalm 145:1-5, 17-21

Psalm 145

1I will extol you, my God and King, and bless your name forever and ever.

2Every day I will bless you, and praise your name forever and ever.

3Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised; his greatness is unsearchable.

4One generation shall laud your works to another, and shall declare your mighty acts.

5On the glorious splendor of your majesty, and on your wondrous works, I will meditate.

17The Lord is just in all his ways, and kind in all his doings.

18The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth.

19He fulfills the desire of all who fear him; he also hears their cry, and saves them.

20The Lord watches over all who love him, but all the wicked he will destroy.

21My mouth will speak the praise of the Lord, and all flesh will bless his holy name forever and ever.

Zechariah 6:9-15

Zechariah 6:9-15

9The word of the Lord came to me: 10Collect silver and gold from the exiles—from Heldai, Tobijah, and Jedaiah—who have arrived from Babylon; and go the same day to the house of Josiah son of Zephaniah. 11Take the silver and gold and make a crown, and set it on the head of the high priest Joshua son of Jehozadak; 12say to him: Thus says the Lord of hosts: Here is a man whose name is Branch: for he shall branch out in his place, and he shall build the temple of the Lord. 13It is he that shall build the temple of the Lord; he shall bear royal honor, and shall sit and rule on his throne. There shall be a priest by his throne, with peaceful understanding between the two of them. 14And the crown shall be in the care of Heldai, Tobijah, Jedaiah, and Josiah son of Zephaniah, as a memorial in the temple of the Lord. 15Those who are far off shall come and help to build the temple of the Lord; and you shall know that the Lord of hosts has sent me to you. This will happen if you diligently obey the voice of the Lord your God.

Collect

O Lord, absolve Your people from their offenses that from the bonds of our sins, which by reason of our frailty we have brought upon ourselves, we may be delivered by Your bountiful goodness; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

First Reading: Jer. 7:1-29

Evil in the Land

1The word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD: 2(A) "Stand in the gate of the LORD’s house, and proclaim there this word, and say, Hear the word of the LORD, all you men of Judah who enter these gates to worship the LORD. 3Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel:(B) Amend your ways and your deeds, and I will let you dwell in this place. 4(C) Do not trust in these deceptive words: 'This is the temple of the LORD, the temple of the LORD, the temple of the LORD.'

5"For if you truly(D) amend your ways and your deeds, if you truly(E) execute justice one with another, 6if you(F) do not oppress the sojourner, the fatherless, or the widow,(G) or shed innocent blood in this place,(H) and if you do not go after other gods to your own harm, 7(I) then I will let you dwell in this place,(J) in the land that I gave of old to your fathers forever.

8"Behold, you trust in deceptive words to no avail. 9(K) Will you steal, murder, commit adultery,(L) swear falsely,(M) make offerings to Baal,(N) and go after other gods that you have not known, 10and then come and stand before me in this house,(O) which is called by my name, and say, 'We are delivered!'—only to go on doing all these abominations? 11(P) Has this house,(Q) which is called by my name,(R) become a den of robbers in your eyes? Behold, I myself have seen it, declares the LORD. 12Go now to(S) my place that was in Shiloh,(T) where I made my name dwell at first, and(U) see what I did to it because of the evil of my people Israel. 13And now, because you have done all these things, declares the LORD, and(V) when I spoke to you persistently you did not listen, and(W) when I called you, you did not answer, 14therefore I will do to(X) the house(Y) that is called by my name, and in which you trust, and to the place that I gave to you and to your fathers,(Z) as I did to Shiloh. 15(AA) And I will cast you out of my sight,(AB) as I cast out all your kinsmen, all the offspring of(AC) Ephraim.

16"As for you,(AD) do not pray for this people, or lift up a cry or prayer for them, and do not intercede with me, for I will not hear you. 17Do you not see what they are doing in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem? 18The children gather wood, the fathers kindle fire,(AE) and the women knead dough, to(AF) make cakes for(AG) the queen of heaven. And(AH) they pour out drink offerings to other gods,(AI) to provoke me to anger. 19(AJ) Is it I whom they provoke? declares the LORD. Is it not themselves,(AK) to their own shame? 20Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: behold,(AL) my anger and my wrath will be poured out on this place, upon man and beast, upon the trees of the field and the fruit of the ground;(AM) it will burn and not be quenched."

21Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel:(AN) "Add your burnt offerings to your sacrifices, and eat the flesh. 22For in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt, I did not speak to your fathers or command them(AO) concerning burnt offerings and sacrifices. 23But this command I gave them:(AP) 'Obey my voice, and(AQ) I will be your God, and you shall be my people.(AR) And walk in all the way that I command you,(AS) that it may be well with you.' 24(AT) But they did not obey or incline their ear,(AU) but walked in their own counsels and(AV) the stubbornness of their evil hearts, and(AW) went backward and not forward. 25From the day that your fathers came out of the land of Egypt to this day,(AX) I have persistently sent all my servants the prophets to them, day after day. 26(AY) Yet they did not listen to me or incline their ear,(AZ) but stiffened their neck.(BA) They did worse than their fathers.

27(BB) "So you shall speak all these words to them, but they will not listen to you.(BC) You shall call to them, but they will not answer you. 28And you shall say to them, 'This is the nation that did not obey the voice of the LORD their God, and did not accept discipline;(BD) truth has perished; it is cut off from their lips.

29(BE) "'Cut off your hair and cast it away;

raise a lamentation on(BF) the bare heights, for the LORD has rejected and forsaken

the generation of his wrath.'

Seven Woes to the Scribes and Pharisees

1Then Jesus(A) said to the crowds and to his disciples, 2(B) "The scribes and the Pharisees(C) sit on Moses’ seat, 3so practice and observe whatever they tell you—(D) but not what they do.(E) For they preach, but do not practice. 4(F) They tie up heavy burdens, hard to bear,[a] and lay them on people’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to move them with their finger. 5(G) They do all their deeds(H) to be seen by others. For they make(I) their phylacteries broad and(J) their fringes long, 6and they(K) love the place of honor at feasts and(L) the best seats in the synagogues 7and(M) greetings in(N) the marketplaces and being called(O) rabbi[b] by others. 8(P) But you are not to be called rabbi, for you have one teacher, and you are(Q) all brothers.[c] 9(R) And call no man your father on earth, for(S) you have one Father, who is in heaven. 10Neither be called instructors, for you have one instructor,(T) the Christ. 11(U) The greatest among you shall be your servant. 12(V) Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.

Friday Father Reading

"You should receive at the Holy Table in such as way that you do not at all doubt the reality of Christ's Body and Blood. What faith believes, the mouth receives; and in vain is the 'Amen!' replied by those who dispute against what is received." [St. Leo the Great.
