Psalm 17:1-9

Psalm 17

1Hear a just cause, O Lord; attend to my cry; give ear to my prayer from lips free of deceit.

2From you let my vindication come; let your eyes see the right.

3If you try my heart, if you visit me by night, if you test me, you will find no wickedness in me; my mouth does not transgress.

4As for what others do, by the word of your lips I have avoided the ways of the violent.

5My steps have held fast to your paths; my feet have not slipped.

6I call upon you, for you will answer me, O God; incline your ear to me, hear my words.

7Wondrously show your steadfast love, O savior of those who seek refuge from their adversaries at your right hand.

8Guard me as the apple of the eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings,

9from the wicked who despoil me, my deadly enemies who surround me.

Exodus 3:13-20

Exodus 3:13-2013But Moses said to God, “If I come to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your ancestors has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ what shall I say to them?” 14God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” He said further, “Thus you shall say to the Israelites, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’“ 15God also said to Moses, “Thus you shall say to the Israelites, ‘The Lord, the God of your ancestors, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you’: This is my name forever, and this my title for all generations.

16Go and assemble the elders of Israel, and say to them, ‘The Lord, the God of your ancestors, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Jacob, has appeared to me, saying: I have given heed to you and to what has been done to you in Egypt. 17I declare that I will bring you up out of the misery of Egypt, to the land of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites, a land flowing with milk and honey.’ 18They will listen to your voice; and you and the elders of Israel shall go to the king of Egypt and say to him, ‘The Lord, the God of the Hebrews, has met with us; let us now go a three days’ journey into the wilderness, so that we may sacrifice to the Lord our God.’ 19I know, however, that the king of Egypt will not let you go unless compelled by a mighty hand. 20So I will stretch out my hand and strike Egypt with all my wonders that I will perform in it; after that he will let you go.

Luke 20:1-8

Luke 20:1-8

20One day, as he was teaching the people in the temple and telling the good news, the chief priests and the scribes came with the elders 2and said to him, “Tell us, by what authority are you doing these things? Who is it who gave you this authority?” 3He answered them, “I will also ask you a question, and you tell me: 4Did the baptism of John come from heaven, or was it of human origin?” 5They discussed it with one another, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say, ‘Why did you not believe him?’ 6But if we say, ‘Of human origin,’ all the people will stone us; for they are convinced that John was a prophet.” 7So they answered that they did not know where it came from. 8Then Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.”

Semicontinuous series (related to the lessons for the Saturday service)

Psalm 145:1-5, 17-21

Psalm 145

1I will extol you, my God and King, and bless your name forever and ever.

2Every day I will bless you, and praise your name forever and ever.

3Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised; his greatness is unsearchable.

4One generation shall laud your works to another, and shall declare your mighty acts.

5On the glorious splendor of your majesty, and on your wondrous works, I will meditate.

17The Lord is just in all his ways, and kind in all his doings.

18The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth.

19He fulfills the desire of all who fear him; he also hears their cry, and saves them.

20The Lord watches over all who love him, but all the wicked he will destroy.

21My mouth will speak the praise of the Lord, and all flesh will bless his holy name forever and ever.

Haggai 1:1-15a

Haggai 1:1-15a

1In the second year of King Darius, in the sixth month, on the first day of the month, the word of the Lord came by the prophet Haggai to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest: 2Thus says the Lord of hosts: These people say the time has not yet come to rebuild the Lord’s house. 3Then the word of the Lord came by the prophet Haggai, saying: 4Is it a time for you yourselves to live in your paneled houses, while this house lies in ruins? 5Now therefore thus says the Lord of hosts: Consider how you have fared. 6You have sown much, and harvested little; you eat, but you never have enough; you drink, but you never have your fill; you clothe yourselves, but no one is warm; and you that earn wages earn wages to put them into a bag with holes. 7Thus says the Lord of hosts: Consider how you have fared. 8Go up to the hills and bring wood and build the house, so that I may take pleasure in it and be honored, says the Lord. 9You have looked for much, and, lo, it came to little; and when you brought it home, I blew it away. Why? says the Lord of hosts. Because my house lies in ruins, while all of you hurry off to your own houses. 10Therefore the heavens above you have withheld the dew, and the earth has withheld its produce. 11And I have called for a drought on the land and the hills, on the grain, the new wine, the oil, on what the soil produces, on human beings and animals, and on all their labors.

12Then Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, and Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, with all the remnant of the people, obeyed the voice of the Lord their God, and the words of the prophet Haggai, as the Lord their God had sent him; and the people feared the Lord. 13Then Haggai, the messenger of the Lord, spoke to the people with the Lord’s message, saying, I am with you, says the Lord. 14And the Lord stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people; and they came and worked on the house of the Lord of hosts, their God, 15on the twenty-fourth day of the month, in the sixth month.

Luke 20:1-8

Luke 20:1-8

20One day, as he was teaching the people in the temple and telling the good news, the chief priests and the scribes came with the elders 2and said to him, “Tell us, by what authority are you doing these things? Collect

O Lord, absolve Your people from their offenses that from the bonds of our sins, which by reason of our frailty we have brought upon ourselves, we may be delivered by Your bountiful goodness; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

First Reading: Jer. 8:18-9:12

Jeremiah Grieves for His People

18My joy is gone; grief is upon me;[a]

(A) my heart is sick within me. 19Behold, the cry of the daughter of my people

from(B) the length and breadth of the land:"Is the LORD not in Zion?

(C) Is her King not in her?"(D) "Why have they provoked me to anger with their carved images

and with their foreign idols?" 20"The harvest is past, the summer is ended,

and we are not saved." 21For the wound of(E) the daughter of my people is my heart wounded;

(F) I mourn, and dismay has taken hold on me.

22Is there no(G) balm in Gilead?

Is there no physician there? Why then has the health of the daughter of my people

not been restored? 1[b](H) Oh that my head were waters,

and my eyes a fountain of tears, that I might weep day and night

for the slain of(I) the daughter of my people! 2[c] Oh that I had in the desert

a travelers’ lodging place, that I might leave my people

and go away from them! For they are all(J) adulterers,

a company of(K) treacherous men. 3(L) They bend their tongue like a bow;

falsehood and not truth has grown strong[d] in the land;for they proceed from evil to evil,

(M) and they do not know me, declares the LORD.

4(N) Let everyone beware of his neighbor,

and put no trust in any brother, for every(O) brother is a deceiver,

and every neighbor(P) goes about as a slanderer. 5Everyone deceives his neighbor,

and no one speaks the truth;they have taught their tongue to speak lies;

they weary themselves committing iniquity. 6Heaping oppression upon oppression, and deceit upon deceit,

(Q) they refuse to know me, declares the LORD.

7Therefore thus says the LORD of hosts:"Behold,(R) I will refine them and(S) test them,

for what else can I do,(T) because of my people? 8(U) Their tongue is a deadly arrow;

(V) it speaks deceitfully;with his mouth(W) each speaks peace to his neighbor,

but in his heart(X) he plans an ambush for him. 9(Y) Shall I not punish them for these things? declares the LORD,

and shall I not avenge myself

on a nation such as this?

10"I will take up weeping and wailing for the mountains,

and a lamentation for(Z) the pastures of the wilderness,(AA) because they are laid waste so that no one passes through,

and the lowing of cattle is not heard;(AB) both the birds of the air and the beasts

have fled and are gone. 11(AC) I will make Jerusalem a heap of ruins,

(AD) a lair of jackals,(AE) and I will make the cities of Judah a desolation,

without inhabitant."

12(AF) Who is the man so wise that he can understand this? To whom has the mouth of the LORD spoken, that he may declare it? Why is the land ruined(AG) and laid waste like a wilderness, so that no one passes through?

Second Reading: Matt. 23:13-39

13"But woe(A) to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you(B) shut the kingdom of heaven in people’s faces. For you(C) neither enter yourselves nor allow those who would enter to go in.[a] 15Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you travel across sea and land to make a single(D) proselyte, and when he becomes a proselyte, you make him twice as much a(E) child of(F) hell[b] as yourselves.

16"Woe to(G) you,(H) blind guides, who say,(I) 'If anyone swears by the temple, it is nothing, but if anyone swears by the gold of the temple, he is bound by his oath.' 17You blind fools! For which is greater, the gold or(J) the temple that has made the gold sacred? 18And you say, 'If anyone swears by the altar, it is nothing, but if anyone swears by(K) the gift that is on the altar, he is bound by his oath.' 19You blind men! For which is greater, the gift or(L) the altar that makes the gift sacred? 20So whoever swears by the altar swears by it and by everything on it. 21And whoever swears by the temple swears by it and by(M) him who dwells in it. 22And whoever swears by(N) heaven swears by(O) the throne of God and by(P) him who sits upon it.

23(Q) "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For(R) you tithe mint and dill and(S) cumin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law:(T) justice and mercy and faithfulness.(U) These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others. 24You blind guides, straining out a gnat and swallowing(V) a camel!

25(W) "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For(X) you clean the outside of(Y) the cup and the plate, but inside they are full of(Z) greed and self-indulgence. 26You blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of(AA) the cup and the plate, that the outside also may be clean.

27(AB) "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like(AC) whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within are full of dead people’s bones and(AD) all uncleanness. 28So you also(AE) outwardly appear righteous to others, but within you are full of(AF) hypocrisy and lawlessness.

29(AG) "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you build the tombs of the prophets and decorate the monuments of the righteous, 30saying, 'If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.' 31Thus you witness against yourselves that you are(AH) sons of those who murdered the prophets. 32(AI) Fill up, then, the measure of your fathers. 33You serpents,(AJ) you brood of vipers, how are you to escape being sentenced to(AK) hell? 34(AL) Therefore(AM) I send you(AN) prophets and wise men and(AO) scribes,(AP) some of whom you will kill and crucify, and(AQ) some you will(AR) flog in your synagogues and persecute from town to town, 35so that on you may come all(AS) the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of innocent(AT) Abel to the blood of(AU) Zechariah the son of Barachiah,[c] whom you murdered between(AV) the sanctuary and(AW) the altar. 36Truly, I say to you,(AX) all these things will come upon this generation.

Lament over Jerusalem

37(AY) "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that(AZ) kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often would I have(BA) gathered(BB) your children together(BC) as a hen gathers her brood(BD) under her wings, and(BE) you would not! 38See,(BF) your house is left to you desolate. 39For I tell you, you will not see me again, until you say,(BG) 'Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.'"

Footnotes:Matthew 23:13 Some manuscripts add here (or after verse 12) verse 14: Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you devour widows’ houses and for a pretense you make long prayers; therefore you will receive the greater condemnation Matthew 23:15 Greek Gehenna; also verse 33 Matthew 23:35 Some manuscripts omit the son of Barachiah

Saturday Father Reading

"He appointed this two-fold form of bread and wine, rather than any other, as a further indication of the union and fellowship that takes place in this Sacrament. For there is no union more intimate, deep, and inseparable than the union of food with the one who partakes of it, since the food enters his nature, is changed into it, and becomes one with his beingÉIn the same way we are united with Christ in the Sacrament and are made one body with the saints."
