Psalm 123
Psalm 123
1To you I lift up my eyes, O you who are enthroned in the heavens!
2As the eyes of servants look to the hand of their master, as the eyes of a maid to the hand of her mistress, so our eyes look to the Lord our God, until he has mercy upon us.
3Have mercy upon us, O Lord, have mercy upon us, for we have had more than enough of contempt.
4Our soul has had more than its fill of the scorn of those who are at ease, of the contempt of the proud.
Job 21:1, 17-34
Job 25:1-26:14
25Then Bildad the Shuhite answered: 2“Dominion and fear are with God; he makes peace in his high heaven. 3Is there any number to his armies? Upon whom does his light not arise? 4How then can a mortal be righteous before God? How can one born of woman be pure? 5If even the moon is not bright and the stars are not pure in his sight, 6how much less a mortal, who is a maggot, and a human being, who is a worm!”
26Then Job answered: 2“How you have helped one who has no power! How you have assisted the arm that has no strength! 3How you have counseled one who has no wisdom, and given much good advice! 4With whose help have you uttered words, and whose spirit has come forth from you?
5The shades below tremble, the waters and their inhabitants. 6Sheol is naked before God, and Abaddon has no covering. 7He stretches out Zaphon over the void, and hangs the earth upon nothing. 8He binds up the waters in his thick clouds, and the cloud is not torn open by them. 9He covers the face of the full moon, and spreads over it his cloud. 10He has described a circle on the face of the waters, at the boundary between light and darkness. 11The pillars of heaven tremble, and are astounded at his rebuke. 12By his power he stilled the Sea; by his understanding he struck down Rahab. 13By his wind the heavens were made fair; his hand pierced the fleeing serpent. 14These are indeed but the outskirts of his ways; and how small a whisper do we hear of him! But the thunder of his power who can understand?”
2 John 1-13
1The elder to the elect lady and her children, whom I love in the truth, and not only I but also all who know the truth, 2because of the truth that abides in us and will be with us forever: 3Grace, mercy, and peace will be with us from God the Father and from Jesus Christ, the Father’s Son, in truth and love. 4I was overjoyed to find some of your children walking in the truth, just as we have been commanded by the Father.
5But now, dear lady, I ask you, not as though I were writing you a new commandment, but one we have had from the beginning, let us love one another. 6And this is love, that we walk according to his commandments; this is the commandment just as you have heard it from the beginning—you must walk in it.
7Many deceivers have gone out into the world, those who do not confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh; any such person is the deceiver and the antichrist! 8Be on your guard, so that you do not lose what we have worked for, but may receive a full reward. 9Everyone who does not abide in the teaching of Christ, but goes beyond it, does not have God; whoever abides in the teaching has both the Father and the Son.
10Do not receive into the house or welcome anyone who comes to you and does not bring this teaching; 11for to welcome is to participate in the evil deeds of such a person.
12Although I have much to write to you, I would rather not use paper and ink; instead I hope to come to you and talk with you face to face, so that our joy may be complete. 13The children of your elect sister send you their greetings.

Psalm 98
Psalm 98
1O sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous things. His right hand and his holy arm have gotten him victory.
2The Lord has made known his victory; he has revealed his vindication in the sight of the nations.
3He has remembered his steadfast love and faithfulness to the house of Israel. All the ends of the earth have seen the victory of our God.
4Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth; break forth into joyous song and sing praises.
5Sing praises to the Lord with the lyre, with the lyre and the sound of melody.
6With trumpets and the sound of the horn make a joyful noise before the King, the Lord.
7Let the sea roar, and all that fills it; the world and those who live in it.
8Let the floods clap their hands; let the hills sing together for joy
9at the presence of the Lord, for he is coming to judge the earth. He will judge the world with righteousness, and the peoples with equity.
Haggai 2:20-23
Haggai 2:20-23
20The word of the Lord came a second time to Haggai on the twenty-fourth day of the month: 21Speak to Zerubbabel, governor of Judah, saying, I am about to shake the heavens and the earth, 22and to overthrow the throne of kingdoms; I am about to destroy the strength of the kingdoms of the nations, and overthrow the chariots and their riders; and the horses and their riders shall fall, every one by the sword of a comrade. 23On that day, says the Lord of hosts, I will take you, O Zerubbabel my servant, son of Shealtiel, says the Lord, and make you like a signet ring; for I have chosen you, says the Lord of hosts.

Today's Reading: 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18
Daily Lectionary: Jeremiah 22:1-23; Matthew 25:1-13
For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus. (1 Thessalonians 4:14)
In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. “He’s dead, Jim.” Dr. McCoy used to say that line so often on the ancient Star Trek TV series that it became a bit of a joke.
Nobody likes to say the word “die” about a loved one. It is so much easier to say “we lost him” or “he passed away.” But that’s not what happened. He died. He is dead. It sounds so…final, though.
Yes, it does. And that is what makes the resurrection of the dead such a miraculous and joyful thing. We know that death is not the end. We know that those who die in Christ will live again in their bodies.
That’s what Baptism is, after all, isn’t it? Being crucified with Jesus on His cross, being laid in His tomb with Him, and being raised from the dead with Him on Easter morning? Yes!
We have already gotten the whole death thing over with. We are alive now and will live forever! But we’ve got to be reminded of the wages of our sin, so unless Christ returns before then, our bodies will die, and they will be placed in the ground.
The Thessalonians had to be reminded that they belonged to Christ Jesus. That they had put on Christ in their baptisms, and as such, they would not stay dead, but they would live again, just as Jesus does now. And that’s why some tombstones say, “Asleep in Jesus.”
That’s your future, too. Just as surely as you are united with Christ Jesus in life and death through faith, that same Christ Jesus will lead you through your earthly death into life everlasting. In the Name of Jesus. Amen.
If Christ still lay within the tomb Then death would be the end, And we should face our final doom With neither guide nor friend. But now the Savior is raised up, So when a Christian dies We mourn, yet look to God in hope – In Christ the saints arise! (LSB 486:2)

Collect
Almighty God, we implore You, show Your mercy to Your humble servants that we, who put no trust in our own merits, may not be dealt with after the severity of Your judgment but according to Your mercy; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
First Reading: Jer. 22:1-23
1Thus says the LORD: "Go down to the house of the king of Judah and speak there this word, 2and say,(A) 'Hear the word of the LORD, O king of Judah, who sits on the throne of David, you, and your servants, and your people who enter these gates. 3Thus says the LORD:(B) Do justice and righteousness, and deliver from the hand of the oppressor him who has been robbed. And(C) do no wrong or violence(D) to the resident alien,(E) the fatherless, and the widow, nor shed innocent blood in this place. 4For if you will indeed obey this word,(F) then there shall enter the gates of this house kings who sit on the throne of David, riding in chariots and on horses, they and their servants and their people. 5But if you will not obey these words, I(G) swear by myself, declares the LORD, that(H) this house shall become a desolation. 6For thus says the LORD concerning the house of the king of Judah:
"'You are like Gilead to me,
like the summit of(I) Lebanon, yet surely I will make you a desert,
(J) an uninhabited city.[a] 7(K) I will prepare destroyers against you,
each with his weapons,(L) and they shall cut down your choicest cedars
and cast them into the fire.
8"'And many nations will pass by this city, and every man will say to his neighbor,(M) "Why has the LORD dealt thus with this great city?" 9(N) And they will answer, "Because they have forsaken the covenant of the LORD their God and worshiped other gods and served them."'"
10(O) Weep not for him who is dead,
nor grieve for him,(P) but weep bitterly for him who goes away,
for he shall return no more
to see his native land.
Message to the Sons of Josiah
11For thus says the LORD concerning Shallum the son of Josiah, king of Judah, who reigned instead of Josiah his father, and(Q) who went away from this place: "He shall return here no more, 12but(R) in the place where they have carried him captive, there shall he die, and he shall never see this land again."
13(S) "Woe to him who builds his house by(T) unrighteousness,
and his upper rooms by injustice,(U) who makes his neighbor serve him for nothing
and does not give him his wages, 14who says, 'I will build myself a great house
with spacious upper rooms,'who cuts out windows for it,
paneling it with cedar
and(V) painting it with vermilion. 15Do you think you are a king
because you compete in cedar?Did not your father eat and drink
and(W) do justice and righteousness?
(X) Then it was well with him. 16(Y) He judged the cause of the poor and needy;
(Z) then it was well.Is not this(AA) to know me?
declares the LORD. 17But you have eyes and heart
only for your dishonest gain,(AB) for shedding innocent blood,
and for practicing oppression and violence."
18Therefore thus says the LORD concerning Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah:
(AC) "They shall not lament for him, saying,
(AD) 'Ah, my brother!' or 'Ah, sister!'They shall not lament for him, saying,
(AE) 'Ah, lord!' or 'Ah, his majesty!' 19With the burial of a donkey(AF) he shall be buried,
dragged and dumped beyond the gates of Jerusalem."
20"Go up to Lebanon, and cry out,
and lift up your voice in Bashan;cry out from(AG) Abarim,
for all(AH) your lovers are destroyed. 21I spoke to you in your prosperity,
but you said, 'I will not listen.'(AI) This has been your way from(AJ) your youth,
that you have not obeyed my voice. 22(AK) The wind shall shepherd all your shepherds,
and(AL) your lovers shall go into captivity;(AM) then you will be ashamed and confounded
because of all your evil. 23O inhabitant of(AN) Lebanon,
nested among the cedars, how you will be pitied when pangs come upon you,
(AO) pain as of a woman in labor!"

The Parable of the Ten Virgins
1"Then the kingdom of heaven will be like(A) ten virgins who took their lamps[a] and went to meet(B) the bridegroom.[b] 2Five of them were foolish, and five were(C) wise. 3For when the foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with them, 4but the wise took flasks of oil with their lamps. 5As the bridegroom(D) was delayed, they all became drowsy and slept. 6But(E) at midnight there was a cry, 'Here is the bridegroom! Come out to meet him.' 7Then all those virgins rose and(F) trimmed their lamps. 8And the foolish said to the wise, 'Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.' 9But the wise answered, saying, 'Since there will not be enough for us and for you, go rather to the dealers and buy for yourselves.' 10And while they were going to buy, the bridegroom came, and(G) those who were ready went in with him to(H) the marriage feast, and(I) the door was shut. 11Afterward the other virgins came also, saying,(J) 'Lord, lord, open to us.' 12(K) But he answered, 'Truly, I say to you,(L) I do not know you.' 13(M) Watch therefore, for you(N) know neither the day nor the hour.

"Paul writes that the Gentiles have been brought into one body and have been made partakers and fellow heirs with Christ. How are they made of one body with Him? By partaking of the blessing of the Mysteries they are made one body with Him." [St. Cyril of Alexandria. "On St. John 15." Book 10, chapter 2. 5th Century]
