Collect

O Lord, keep Your household the Church in continual godliness that through Your protection she may be free from all adversities and devoutly given to serve You in good works; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

First Reading: Deut. 31:1-29

Joshua to Succeed Moses

1So Moses continued to speak these words to all Israel. 2And he said to them, "I am(A) 120 years old today. I am no longer able to(B) go out and come in. The LORD has said to me,(C) 'You shall not go over this Jordan.' 3The LORD your God(D) himself will go over before you. He will destroy these nations before you, so that you shall dispossess them, and Joshua will go over at your head,(E) as the LORD has spoken. 4And the LORD will do to them(F) as he did to Sihon(G) and Og, the kings of the Amorites, and to their land, when he destroyed them. 5And the LORD will give them over to you, and you shall do to them(H) according to the whole commandment that I have commanded you. 6(I) Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them,(J) for it is the LORD your God who goes with you.(K) He will not leave you or forsake you."

7Then(L) Moses summoned Joshua and said to him in the sight of all Israel,(M) "Be strong and courageous, for you shall go with this people into the land that the LORD has sworn to their fathers to give them, and you shall put them in possession of it. 8It is the LORD(N) who goes before you. He will be with you;(O) he will not leave you or forsake you.(P) Do not fear or be dismayed."

The Reading of the Law

9Then Moses(Q) wrote this law and gave it to the priests, the sons of Levi,(R) who carried the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and to all the elders of Israel. 10And Moses commanded them,(S) "At the end of every seven years, at the set time in the year of release, at(T) the Feast of Booths, 11when all Israel comes(U) to appear before the LORD your God at the place that he will choose,(V) you shall read this law before all Israel in their hearing. 12(W) Assemble the people, men, women, and little ones, and the sojourner within your towns, that they may hear and learn to fear the LORD your God, and be careful to do all the words of this law, 13and that their children,(X) who have not known it,(Y) may hear and learn to fear the LORD your God,(Z) as long as you live in the land that you are going over the Jordan to possess."

Joshua Commissioned to Lead Israel

14And the LORD said to Moses,(AA) "Behold, the days approach when you must die. Call Joshua and present yourselves in the tent of meeting, that(AB) I may commission him." And Moses and Joshua went and presented themselves in the tent of meeting. 15And(AC) the LORD appeared in the tent in a pillar of cloud. And the pillar of cloud stood over the entrance of the tent.

16And the LORD said to Moses,(AD) "Behold, you are about to lie down with your fathers. Then this people will rise and(AE) whore after the foreign gods among them in the land that they are entering, and they will(AF) forsake me and(AG) break my covenant that I have made with them. 17Then my anger will be kindled against them in that day, and(AH) I will forsake them and(AI) hide my face from them, and they will be devoured. And many evils and troubles will come upon them, so that they will say in that day,(AJ) 'Have not these evils come upon us because(AK) our God is not among us?' 18And I will surely hide my face in that day because of all the evil that they have done, because(AL) they have turned to other gods.

19"Now therefore write(AM) this song and(AN) teach it to the people of Israel. Put it in their mouths, that this song may be(AO) a witness for me against the people of Israel. 20For when I have brought them into the land(AP) flowing with milk and honey, which I swore to give to their fathers, and they have eaten and are full and(AQ) grown fat,(AR) they will turn to other gods and serve them, and(AS) despise me and(AT) break my covenant. 21And when many evils and troubles have come upon them, this song shall confront them as(AU) a witness (for it will live unforgotten in the mouths of their offspring). For(AV) I know what they are inclined to do even today, before I have brought them into the land that I swore to give." 22So Moses wrote this song the same day and taught it to the people of Israel.

23(AW) And the LORD commissioned Joshua the son of Nun and said,(AX) "Be strong and courageous, for you shall bring the people of Israel into the land that I swore to give them.(AY) I will be with you."

24When Moses had finished(AZ) writing the words of this law in a book to the very end, 25Moses commanded(BA) the Levites who carried the ark of the covenant of the LORD, 26"Take this Book of the Law(BB) and put it by the side of the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God, that it may be there for(BC) a witness against you. 27For I know how rebellious and(BD) stubborn you are. Behold, even today while I am yet alive with you,(BE) you have been rebellious against the LORD. How much more after my death! 28Assemble to me all the elders of your tribes and your officers, that I may speak(BF) these words in their ears and(BG) call heaven and earth to witness against them. 29For I know that after my death(BH) you will surely act corruptly and turn aside from the way that I have commanded you. And(BI) in the days to come(BJ) evil will befall you, because you will do what is evil in the sight of the LORD,(BK) provoking him to anger through the work of your hands."

Second Reading: Matt. 19:16-30

The Rich Young Man

16(A) And behold, a man came up to him, saying, "Teacher, what good deed must I do to(B) have(C) eternal life?" 17And he said to him, "Why do you ask me about what is good? There is only one who is good.(D) If you would enter life, keep the commandments." 18He said to him, "Which ones?" And Jesus said, (E) "You shall not murder, You shall not commit adultery, You shall not steal, You shall not bear false witness, 19Honor your father and mother, and,(F) You shall love your neighbor as yourself." 20The young man said to him,(G) "All these I have kept. What do I still lack?" 21Jesus said to him, "If you would be(H) perfect, go,(I) sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have(J) treasure in heaven; and come, follow me." 22(K) When the young man heard this he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.

23And Jesus said to his disciples, "Truly, I say to you,(L) only with difficulty will a rich person enter the kingdom of heaven. 24(M) Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter(N) the kingdom of God." 25When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished, saying, "Who then can be saved?" 26But Jesus(O) looked at them and said, (P) "With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible." 27Then Peter said in reply, "See,(Q) we have left everything and followed you. What then will we have?" 28Jesus said to them, "Truly, I say to you, in the new world,[a](R) when the Son of Man will sit on his glorious throne, you who have followed me(S) will also sit on twelve thrones,(T) judging the twelve tribes of Israel. 29(U) And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or lands, for my name’s sake, will receive a hundredfold[b] and will(V) inherit eternal life. 30But(W) many who are(X) first will be last, and the last first.

Friday Father Reading

"Anyone filled by the help of God's grace, having this desire, properly honors the paschal Sacrament. The destroying angel does not enter his threshold, which is marked with the Blood of the Lamb and the seal of the cross. Therefore, with bodies and souls purified, let us embrace the wondrous Sacrament of our salvation." [St. Leo the Great. "Sermon 4 on the Passion." 5th Century]
