Epistle: Rev. 14:6-7

The Messages of the Three Angels

6Then I saw another angel(A) flying directly overhead, with an eternal gospel to proclaim to(B) those who dwell on earth, to every nation and tribe and language and people. 7And he said with a loud voice,(C) "Fear God and(D) give him glory, because the hour of his judgment has come, and(E) worship him who made heaven and earth, the sea and the(F) springs of water."

Gospel: Matt. 11:12-15

12(A) From the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven has suffered violence,[a] and the violent take it by force. 13(B) For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John, 14and if you are willing to accept it, he is(C) Elijah who is to come. 15(D) He who has ears to hear,[b] let him hear.

Daily Lectionary

First Reading: Deut. 32:28-52

28"For they are a nation void of counsel,

and there is(A) no understanding in them. 29(B) If they were wise, they would understand this;

they would(C) discern their latter end! 30How could(D) one have chased a thousand,

and two have put ten thousand to flight,unless their Rock(E) had sold them,

and the LORD had given them up? 31For(F) their rock is not as our Rock;

(G) our enemies are by themselves. 32For their vine(H) comes from the vine of Sodom

and from the fields of Gomorrah;their grapes are grapes of(I) poison;

their clusters are bitter; 33their wine is the poison of(J) serpents

and the cruel venom of asps.

34"'Is not this laid up in store with me,

(K) sealed up in my treasuries? 35(L) Vengeance is mine, and recompense,[a]

(M) for the time when their foot shall slip;for(N) the day of their calamity is at hand,

and their doom comes swiftly.' 36For(O) the LORD will vindicate[b] his people

(P) and have compassion on his servants,when he sees that their power is gone

and there is none remaining,(Q) bond or free. 37Then he will say,(R) 'Where are their gods,

(S) the rock in which they took refuge, 38who ate the fat of their sacrifices

and drank the wine of their drink offering?Let them rise up and help you;

let them be your protection!

39"'See now that(T) I, even I, am he,

and there is no god beside me;(U) I kill and I make alive;

(V) I wound and I heal;

and there is none that can deliver out of my hand. 40For(W) I lift up my hand to heaven

and swear, As I live forever, 41if I(X) sharpen my flashing sword[c]

and my hand takes hold on judgment,I will take vengeance on my adversaries

and will repay those who hate me. 42I will make my arrows drunk with blood,

and(Y) my sword shall devour flesh—with the blood of the slain and the captives,

from the(Z) long-haired heads of the enemy.'

43(AA) "Rejoice with him, O heavens;

bow down to him, all gods,[d]for he(AB) avenges the blood of his children[e]

and takes vengeance on his adversaries.He repays those who hate him[f]

and cleanses[g] his people’s land."[h]

44Moses came and recited all the words of this song in the hearing of the people, he and(AC) Joshua[i] the son of Nun. 45And when Moses had finished speaking all these words to all Israel, 46he said to them,(AD) "Take to heart all the words by which I am warning you today,(AE) that you may command them to your children, that they may be careful to do all the words of this law. 47For it is no empty word for you,(AF) but your very life, and by this word you shall live long in the land that you are going over the Jordan to possess."

Moses’ Death Foretold

48That very day the LORD spoke to Moses, 49"Go up(AG) this mountain of the Abarim, Mount Nebo, which is in the land of Moab, opposite Jericho, and view the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the people of Israel for a possession. 50And die on the mountain which you go up, and be gathered to your people, as(AH) Aaron your brother died in Mount Hor and was gathered to his people, 51(AI) because you broke faith with me in the midst of the people of Israel at the waters of Meribah-kadesh, in the wilderness of Zin, and because you did not treat me as holy in the midst of the people of Israel. 52For(AJ) you shall see the land before you, but you shall not go there, into the land that I am giving to the people of Israel."

Second Reading: Matt. 20:17-34

Jesus Foretells His Death a Third Time

17(A) And as Jesus was going up to Jerusalem, he took the twelve disciples aside, and on the way he said to them, 18"See,(B) we are going up to Jerusalem. And the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and scribes, and they will(C) condemn him to death 19and(D) deliver him over to the Gentiles(E) to be mocked and flogged and(F) crucified, and he will be raised on(G) the third day."

A Mother’s Request

20(H) Then(I) the mother of the sons of Zebedee came up to him with her sons, and(J) kneeling before him she asked him for something. 21And he said to her, "What do you want?" She said to him, "Say that these two sons of mine(K) are to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left,(L) in your kingdom." 22Jesus answered, (M) "You do not know what you are asking. Are you able(N) to drink the cup that I am to drink?" They said to him, "We are able." 23He said to them, (O) "You will drink(P) my cup, but to sit at my right hand and at my left is not mine to grant,(Q) but it is for those for whom it has been(R) prepared by my Father." 24And when the ten heard it, they were indignant at the two brothers. 25But Jesus called them to him and said, (S) "You know that the rulers of the Gentiles(T) lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. 26(U) It shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant,[a] 27and whoever would be first among you must be your slave,[b] 28even as the Son of Man came not to be served but(V) to serve, and(W) to give his life as a ransom for(X) many."

Jesus Heals Two Blind Men

29(Y) And as they went out of Jericho, a great crowd followed him. 30And behold, there were two blind men sitting by the roadside, and when they heard that Jesus was passing by, they cried out, "Lord,[c] have mercy on us,(Z) Son of David!" 31The crowd(AA) rebuked them, telling them to be silent, but they cried out all the more, "Lord, have mercy on us, Son of David!" 32And stopping, Jesus called them and said, "What do you want me to do for you?" 33They said to him, "Lord, let our eyes be opened." 34And Jesus in pity touched their eyes, and immediately they recovered their sight and followed him.

Isaiah 1:10-18

Isaiah 1:10-18

10Hear the word of the Lord, you rulers of Sodom! Listen to the teaching of our God, you people of Gomorrah! 11What to me is the multitude of your sacrifices? says the Lord; I have had enough of burnt offerings of rams and the fat of fed beasts; I do not delight in the blood of bulls, or of lambs, or of goats. 12When you come to appear before me, who asked this from your hand? Trample my courts no more; 13bringing offerings is futile; incense is an abomination to me. New moon and sabbath and calling of convocation— I cannot endure solemn assemblies with iniquity. 14Your new moons and your appointed festivals my soul hates; they have become a burden to me, I am weary of bearing them. 15When you stretch out your hands, I will hide my eyes from you; even though you make many prayers, I will not listen; your hands are full of blood.

16Wash yourselves; make yourselves clean; remove the evil of your doings from before my eyes; cease to do evil, 17learn to do good; seek justice, rescue the oppressed, defend the orphan, plead for the widow. 18Come now, let us argue it out, says the Lord: though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be like snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool.

Psalm 32:1-7

Psalm 32

1Happy are those whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered.

2Happy are those to whom the Lord imputes no iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no deceit.

3While I kept silence, my body wasted away through my groaning all day long.

4For day and night your hand was heavy upon me; my strength was dried up as by the heat of summer. Selah

5Then I acknowledged my sin to you, and I did not hide my iniquity; I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord,” and you forgave the guilt of my sin. Selah

6Therefore let all who are faithful offer prayer to you; at a time of distress, the rush of mighty waters shall not reach them.

7You are a hiding place for me; you preserve me from trouble; you surround me with glad cries of deliverance. Selah

2 Thessalonians 1:1-4, 11-12

2 Thessalonians 1:1-4, 11-12

1Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy, To the church of the Thessalonians in God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: 2Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 3We must always give thanks to God for you, brothers and sisters, as is right, because your faith is growing abundantly, and the love of everyone of you for one another is increasing. 4Therefore we ourselves boast of you among the churches of God for your steadfastness and faith during all your persecutions and the afflictions that you are enduring.

11To this end we always pray for you, asking that our God will make you worthy of his call and will fulfill by his power every good resolve and work of faith, 12so that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Luke 19:1-10

Luke 19:1-10

19He entered Jericho and was passing through it. 2A man was there named Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was rich. 3He was trying to see who Jesus was, but on account of the crowd he could not, because he was short in stature. 4So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree to see him, because he was going to pass that way. 5When Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, hurry and come down; for I must stay at your house today.” 6So he hurried down and was happy to welcome him. 7All who saw it began to grumble and said, “He has gone to be the guest of one who is a sinner.” 8Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord, “Look, half of my possessions, Lord, I will give to the poor; and if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I will pay back four times as much.” 9Then Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because he too is a son of Abraham. 10For the Son of Man came to seek out and to save the lost.”

Habakkuk 1:1-4; 2:1-4

Habakkuk 1:1-4; 2:1-4

1The oracle that the prophet Habakkuk saw. 2O Lord, how long shall I cry for help, and you will not listen? Or cry to you “Violence!” and you will not save? 3Why do you make me see wrong-doing and look at trouble? Destruction and violence are before me; strife and contention arise. 4So the law becomes slack and justice never prevails. The wicked surround the righteous— therefore judgment comes forth perverted.

2I will stand at my watchpost, and station myself on the rampart; I will keep watch to see what he will say to me, and what he will answer concerning my complaint. 2Then the Lord answered me and said: Write the vision; make it plain on tablets, so that a runner may read it. 3For there is still a vision for the appointed time; it speaks of the end, and does not lie. If it seems to tarry, wait for it; it will surely come, it will not delay. 4Look at the proud! Their spirit is not right in them, but the righteous live by their faith.

Psalm 119:137-144

You are righteous, O Lord, and your judgments are right.

138You have appointed your decrees in righteousness and in all faithfulness.

139My zeal consumes me because my foes forget your words.

140Your promise is well tried, and your servant loves it.

141I am small and despised, yet I do not forget your precepts.

142Your righteousness is an everlasting righteousness, and your law is the truth.

143Trouble and anguish have come upon me, but your commandments are my delight.

144Your decrees are righteous forever; give me understanding that I may live.

Readings for Reformation Day

Jeremiah 31:31-34

Jeremiah 31:31-3431The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah. 32It will not be like the covenant that I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt—a covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, says the Lord. 33But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 34No longer shall they teach one another, or say to each other, “Know the Lord,” for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, says the Lord; for I will forgive their iniquity, and remember their sin no more.

Psalm 46

Psalm 46

1God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

2Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change, though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea;

3though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble with its tumult. Selah

4There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy habitation of the Most High.

5God is in the midst of the city; it shall not be moved; God will help it when the morning dawns.

6The nations are in an uproar, the kingdoms totter; he utters his voice, the earth melts.

7The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah

8Come, behold the works of the Lord; see what desolations he has brought on the earth.

9He makes wars cease to the end of the earth; he breaks the bow, and shatters the spear; he burns the shields with fire.

10“Be still, and know that I am God! I am exalted among the nations, I am exalted in the earth.”

11The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah

Romans 3:19-28

Romans 3:19-28

19Now we know that whatever the law says, it speaks to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced, and the whole world may be held accountable to God. 20For “no human being will be justified in his sight” by deeds prescribed by the law, for through the law comes the knowledge of sin. 21But now, apart from law, the righteousness of God has been disclosed, and is attested by the law and the prophets, 22the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction, 23since all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God; 24they are now justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25whom God put forward as a sacrifice of atonement by his blood, effective through faith. He did this to show his righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over the sins previously committed; 26it was to prove at the present time that he himself is righteous and that he justifies the one who has faith in Jesus. 27Then what becomes of boasting? It is excluded. By what law? By that of works? No, but by the law of faith. 28For we hold that a person is justified by faith apart from works prescribed by the law.

John 8:31-36

John 8:31-36

31Then Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him, “If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples; 32and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.” 33They answered him, “We are descendants of Abraham and have never been slaves to anyone. What do you mean by saying, ‘You will be made free’?” 34Jesus answered them, “Very truly, I tell you, everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin. 35The slave does not have a permanent place in the household; the son has a place there forever. 36So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.
