Psalm 123

Psalm 123

1To you I lift up my eyes, O you who are enthroned in the heavens!

2As the eyes of servants look to the hand of their master, as the eyes of a maid to the hand of her mistress, so our eyes look to the Lord our God, until he has mercy upon us.

3Have mercy upon us, O Lord, have mercy upon us, for we have had more than enough of contempt.

4Our soul has had more than its fill of the scorn of those who are at ease, of the contempt of the proud.

Job 25:1-26:14

Job 25:1-26:14

25Then Bildad the Shuhite answered: 2“Dominion and fear are with God; he makes peace in his high heaven. 3Is there any number to his armies? Upon whom does his light not arise? 4How then can a mortal be righteous before God? How can one born of woman be pure? 5If even the moon is not bright and the stars are not pure in his sight, 6how much less a mortal, who is a maggot, and a human being, who is a worm!”

26Then Job answered: 2“How you have helped one who has no power! How you have assisted the arm that has no strength! 3How you have counseled one who has no wisdom, and given much good advice! 4With whose help have you uttered words, and whose spirit has come forth from you?

5The shades below tremble, the waters and their inhabitants. 6Sheol is naked before God, and Abaddon has no covering. 7He stretches out Zaphon over the void, and hangs the earth upon nothing. 8He binds up the waters in his thick clouds, and the cloud is not torn open by them. 9He covers the face of the full moon, and spreads over it his cloud. 10He has described a circle on the face of the waters, at the boundary between light and darkness. 11The pillars of heaven tremble, and are astounded at his rebuke. 12By his power he stilled the Sea; by his understanding he struck down Rahab. 13By his wind the heavens were made fair; his hand pierced the fleeing serpent. 14These are indeed but the outskirts of his ways; and how small a whisper do we hear of him! But the thunder of his power who can understand?”

John 5:19-29

John 5:19-2919Jesus said to them, “Very truly, I tell you, the Son can do nothing on his own, but only what he sees the Father doing; for whatever the Father does, the Son does likewise. 20The Father loves the Son and shows him all that he himself is doing; and he will show him greater works than these, so that you will be astonished. 21Indeed, just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whomever he wishes. 22The Father judges no one but has given all judgment to the Son, 23so that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Anyone who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him. 24Very truly, I tell you, anyone who hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life, and does not come under judgment, but has passed from death to life. 25“Very truly, I tell you, the hour is coming, and is now here, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. 26For just as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself; 27and he has given him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of Man. 28Do not be astonished at this; for the hour is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice 29and will come out—those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation.

Semicontinuous series (related to the lessons for the Saturday service)

Psalm 98

Psalm 98

1O sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous things. His right hand and his holy arm have gotten him victory.

2The Lord has made known his victory; he has revealed his vindication in the sight of the nations.

3He has remembered his steadfast love and faithfulness to the house of Israel. All the ends of the earth have seen the victory of our God.

4Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth; break forth into joyous song and sing praises.

5Sing praises to the Lord with the lyre, with the lyre and the sound of melody.

6With trumpets and the sound of the horn make a joyful noise before the King, the Lord.

7Let the sea roar, and all that fills it; the world and those who live in it.

8Let the floods clap their hands; let the hills sing together for joy

9at the presence of the Lord, for he is coming to judge the earth. He will judge the world with righteousness, and the peoples with equity.

Zechariah 8:1-17

Zechariah 8:1-17

8The word of the Lord of hosts came to me, saying: 2Thus says the Lord of hosts: I am jealous for Zion with great jealousy, and I am jealous for her with great wrath. 3Thus says the Lord: I will return to Zion, and will dwell in the midst of Jerusalem; Jerusalem shall be called the faithful city, and the mountain of the Lord of hosts shall be called the holy mountain. 4Thus says the Lord of hosts: Old men and old women shall again sit in the streets of Jerusalem, each with staff in hand because of their great age. 5And the streets of the city shall be full of boys and girls playing in its streets. 6Thus says the Lord of hosts: Even though it seems impossible to the remnant of this people in these days, should it also seem impossible to me, says the Lord of hosts? 7Thus says the Lord of hosts: I will save my people from the east country and from the west country; 8and I will bring them to live in Jerusalem. They shall be my people and I will be their God, in faithfulness and in righteousness.

9Thus says the Lord of hosts: Let your hands be strong—you that have recently been hearing these words from the mouths of the prophets who were present when the foundation was laid for the rebuilding of the temple, the house of the Lord of hosts. 10For before those days there were no wages for people or for animals, nor was there any safety from the foe for those who went out or came in, and I set them all against one other. 11But now I will not deal with the remnant of this people as in the former days, says the Lord of hosts. 12For there shall be a sowing of peace; the vine shall yield its fruit, the ground shall give its produce, and the skies shall give their dew; and I will cause the remnant of this people to possess all these things. 13Just as you have been a cursing among the nations, O house of Judah and house of Israel, so I will save you and you shall be a blessing. Do not be afraid, but let your hands be strong. 14For thus says the Lord of hosts: Just as I purposed to bring disaster upon you, when your ancestors provoked me to wrath, and I did not relent, says the Lord of hosts, 15so again I have purposed in these days to do good to Jerusalem and to the house of Judah; do not be afraid. 16These are the things that you shall do: Speak the truth to one another, render in your gates judgments that are true and make for peace, 17do not devise evil in your hearts against one another, and love no false oath; for all these are things that I hate, says the Lord.

[-] [+] Wednesday of Third Last Sunday

Read today's Higher Things Daily Reflection

Collect

Almighty God, we implore You, show Your mercy to Your humble servants that we, who put no trust in our own merits, may not be dealt with after the severity of Your judgment but according to Your mercy; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

First Reading: Jer. 23:1-20

The Righteous Branch

1(A) "Woe to the shepherds who destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture!" declares the LORD. 2Therefore thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, concerning(B) the shepherds who care for my people: "You have scattered my flock and have driven them away, and you have not attended to them.(C) Behold, I will attend to you for your evil deeds, declares the LORD. 3(D) Then I will gather the remnant of my flock(E) out of all the countries where I have driven them, and I will bring them back to their fold,(F) and they shall be fruitful and multiply. 4(G) I will set shepherds over them who will care for them, and they shall fear no more, nor be dismayed, neither shall any be missing, declares the LORD.

5(H) "Behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will raise up for David a righteous(I) Branch, and(J) he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. 6In his days Judah will be saved, and(K) Israel will(L) dwell securely. And this is the name by which he will be called:(M) 'The LORD is our righteousness.'

7(N) "Therefore, behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when they shall no longer say, 'As the LORD lives who brought up the people of Israel out of the land of Egypt,' 8but 'As the LORD lives who brought up and led the offspring of the house of Israel out of the north country and out of all the countries where he[a] had driven them.' Then they shall dwell in their own land."

Lying Prophets

9Concerning the prophets:

(O) My heart is broken within me;

(P) all my bones shake;I am like a drunken man,

like a man overcome by wine,because of the LORD

and because of his holy words. 10(Q) For the land is full of adulterers;

(R) because of the curse(S) the land mourns,

and(T) the pastures of the wilderness are dried up.(U) Their course is evil,

and their might is not right. 11(V) "Both prophet and priest are ungodly;

even(W) in my house I have found their evil,

declares the LORD. 12(X) Therefore their way shall be to them

like slippery paths(Y) in the darkness,

into which they shall be driven and fall,for I will bring disaster upon them

(Z) in the year of their punishment,

declares the LORD. 13In the prophets of(AA) Samaria

(AB) I saw an unsavory thing:(AC) they prophesied by Baal

(AD) and led my people Israel astray. 14But in the prophets of Jerusalem

I have seen a horrible thing:(AE) they commit adultery and walk in lies;

(AF) they strengthen the hands of evildoers,

so that no one turns from his evil;(AG) all of them have become like Sodom to me,

and its inhabitants like Gomorrah." 15Therefore thus says the LORD of hosts concerning the prophets:(AH) "Behold, I will feed them with bitter food

(AI) and give them poisoned water to drink,for from the prophets of Jerusalem

ungodliness has gone out into all the land."

16Thus says the LORD of hosts: "Do not listen to the words of the prophets who prophesy to you,(AJ) filling you with vain hopes.(AK) They speak visions of their own minds, not from the mouth of the LORD. 17They say continually to those who despise the word of the LORD,(AL) 'It shall be well with you'; and to everyone who(AM) stubbornly follows his own heart, they say,(AN) 'No disaster shall come upon you.'"

18For(AO) who among them has stood in the council of the LORD

to see and to hear his word,

or who has paid attention to his word and listened? 19(AP) Behold, the storm of the LORD!

Wrath has gone forth,(AQ) a whirling tempest;

it will burst upon the head of the wicked. 20(AR) The anger of the LORD will not turn back

until he has executed and(AS) accomplished

the intents of his heart.In the latter days you will understand it clearly.

Second Reading: Matt. 25:14-30

The Parable of the Talents

14(A) "For(B) it will be like a man(C) going on a journey, who called his servants[a] and entrusted to them his property. 15To one he gave five(D) talents,[b] to another two, to another one,(E) to each according to his ability. Then he(F) went away. 16He who had received the five talents went at once and traded with them, and he made five talents more. 17So also he who had the two talents made two talents more. 18But he who had received the one talent went and(G) dug in the ground and hid his master’s money. 19Now(H) after a long time the master of those servants came and(I) settled accounts with them. 20And he who had received the five talents came forward, bringing five talents more, saying, 'Master, you delivered to me five talents; here I have made five talents more.' 21His master said to him, 'Well done, good and(J) faithful servant.[c](K) You have been faithful over a little;(L) I will set you over much. Enter into(M) the joy of your master.' 22And he also who had the two talents came forward, saying, 'Master, you delivered to me two talents; here I have made two talents more.' 23His master said to him, 'Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.' 24He also who had received the one talent came forward, saying, 'Master, I knew you to be(N) a hard man, reaping(O) where you did not sow, and gathering where you scattered no seed, 25so I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground. Here(P) you have what is yours.' 26But his master answered him, 'You(Q) wicked and slothful servant! You knew that I reap where I have not sown and gather where I scattered no seed? 27Then you ought to have invested my money with the bankers, and at my coming I should have received what was my own with interest. 28So take the talent from him and give it to him who has the ten talents. 29(R) For to everyone who has will more be given, and he will have an abundance. But from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away. 30And(S) cast(T) the worthless servant into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.'
