Daily Readings:

Sunday, November 14, 2010 - Lectionary 33 - Pentecost 25

Complementary series (related to the lessons for the Sunday services)

Malachi 4:1-2a

Malachi 4:1-2a

4See, the day is coming, burning like an oven, when all the arrogant and all evildoers will be stubble; the day that comes shall burn them up, says the Lord of hosts, so that it will leave them neither root nor branch. 2But for you who revere my name the sun of righteousness shall rise, with healing in its wings. You shall go out leaping like calves from the stall.

Psalm 98

Psalm 98

1O sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous things. His right hand and his holy arm have gotten him victory.

2The Lord has made known his victory; he has revealed his vindication in the sight of the nations.

3He has remembered his steadfast love and faithfulness to the house of Israel. All the ends of the earth have seen the victory of our God.

4Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth; break forth into joyous song and sing praises.

5Sing praises to the Lord with the lyre, with the lyre and the sound of melody.

6With trumpets and the sound of the horn make a joyful noise before the King, the Lord.

7Let the sea roar, and all that fills it; the world and those who live in it.

8Let the floods clap their hands; let the hills sing together for joy

9at the presence of the Lord, for he is coming to judge the earth. He will judge the world with righteousness, and the peoples with equity.

2 Thessalonians 3:6-13

2 Thessalonians 3:6-13

6Now we command you, beloved, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, to keep away from believers who are living in idleness and not according to the tradition that they received from us. 7For you yourselves know how you ought to imitate us; we were not idle when we were with you, 8and we did not eat anyone’s bread without paying for it; but with toil and labor we worked night and day, so that we might not burden any of you. 9This was not because we do not have that right, but in order to give you an example to imitate. 10For even when we were with you, we gave you this command: Anyone unwilling to work should not eat. 11For we hear that some of you are living in idleness, mere busybodies, not doing any work. 12Now such persons we command and exhort in the Lord Jesus Christ to do their work quietly and to earn their own living. 13Brothers and sisters, do not be weary in doing what is right.

Luke 21:5-19

Luke 21:5-19

5When some were speaking about the temple, how it was adorned with beautiful stones and gifts dedicated to God, he said, 6“As for these things that you see, the days will come when not one stone will be left upon another; all will be thrown down.” 7They asked him, “Teacher, when will this be, and what will be the sign that this is about to take place?” 8And he said, “Beware that you are not led astray; for many will come in my name and say, ‘I am he!’ and, ‘The time is near!’ Do not go after them. 9“When you hear of wars and insurrections, do not be terrified; for these things must take place first, but the end will not follow immediately.” 10Then he said to them, “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; 11there will be great earthquakes, and in various places famines and plagues; and there will be dreadful portents and great signs from heaven. 12“But before all this occurs, they will arrest you and persecute you; they will hand you over to synagogues and prisons, and you will be brought before kings and governors because of my name. 13This will give you an opportunity to testify. 14So make up your minds not to prepare your defense in advance; 15for I will give you words and a wisdom that none of your opponents will be able to withstand or contradict. 16You will be betrayed even by parents and brothers, by relatives and friends; and they will put some of you to death. 17You will be hated by all because of my name. 18But not a hair of your head will perish. 19By your endurance you will gain your souls.

Semicontinuous series (related to the lessons for the Saturday service)

Isaiah 65:17-25

Isaiah 65:17-25

17For I am about to create new heavens and a new earth; the former things shall not be remembered or come to mind. 18But be glad and rejoice forever in what I am creating; for I am about to create Jerusalem as a joy, and its people as a delight. 19I will rejoice in Jerusalem, and delight in my people; no more shall the sound of weeping be heard in it, or the cry of distress. 20No more shall there be in it an infant that lives but a few days, or an old person who does not live out a lifetime; for one who dies at a hundred years will be considered a youth, and one who falls short of a hundred will be considered accursed. 21They shall build houses and inhabit them; they shall plant vineyards and eat their fruit. 22They shall not build and another inhabit; they shall not plant and another eat; for like the days of a tree shall the days of my people be, and my chosen shall long enjoy the work of their hands. 23They shall not labor in vain, or bear children for calamity; for they shall be offspring blessed by the Lord— and their descendants as well. 24Before they call I will answer, while they are yet speaking I will hear. 25The wolf and the lamb shall feed together, the lion shall eat straw like the ox; but the serpent—its food shall be dust! They shall not hurt or destroy on all my holy mountain, says the Lord.

Isaiah 12:2-6

Isaiah 12:2-62Surely God is my salvation; I will trust, and will not be afraid, for the Lord God is my strength and my might; he has become my salvation. 3With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation.

4And you will say in that day: Give thanks to the Lord, call on his name; make known his deeds among the nations; proclaim that his name is exalted. 5Sing praises to the Lord, for he has done gloriously; let this be known in all the earth. 6Shout aloud and sing for joy, O royal Zion, for great in your midst is the Holy One of Israel.

O Lord, so rule and govern our hearts and minds by Your Holy Spirit that, ever mindful of the end of all things and the day of Your just judgment, we may be stirred up to holiness of living here and dwell with You forever hereafter; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Introit

Save me, O God,
by Your name,*

and vindicate me
by Your strength.

Hear my
prayer, O God;*

give ear to the words
of my mouth. (Psalm 54:1-2)

Psalm:

For strangers have risen up a-
gainst me;*

they have not set God be-
fore them.

Behold, God is my
helper;*

the Lord is with those who up-
hold my life.

He will repay my enemies for their
evil.*

Cut them off
in Your truth.

He has delivered me out of all
trouble,*

and my eye has seen its desire upon my
enemies. (Psalm 54:3-5, 7)

The Ancient of Days Reigns

9"As I looked,

(A) thrones were placed,

and the(B) Ancient of Days took his seat;(C) his clothing was white as snow,

and(D) the hair of his head like pure wool;his throne was fiery flames;

(E) its wheels were burning fire. 10(F) A stream of fire issued

and came out from before him;(G) a thousand thousands(H) served him,

(I) and ten thousand times ten thousand(J) stood before him;the(K) court sat in judgment,

and the books were opened.

11"I looked then because of the sound of(L) the great words that the horn was speaking. And as I looked,(M) the beast was killed, and its body destroyed and given over to be burned with fire. 12As for the rest of the beasts,(N) their dominion was taken away, but their lives were prolonged for a season and a time.

The Son of Man Is Given Dominion

13"I saw in the night visions,

and(O) behold, with the clouds of heaven

there came one like a son of man,and he came to the(P) Ancient of Days

and was presented before him. 14(Q) And to him was given dominion

and glory and a kingdom, that all(R) peoples, nations, and languages

should serve him;(S) his dominion is an everlasting dominion,

which shall not pass away, and his kingdom one

that shall not be destroyed.

The Final Judgment

31(A) "When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him,(B) then he will sit on his glorious throne. 32Before him(C) will be gathered(D) all the nations, and(E) he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates(F) the sheep from the goats. 33And he will place the sheep on his right, but the goats on the left. 34Then(G) the King will say to(H) those on his right, 'Come, you(I) who are blessed by my Father,(J) inherit(K) the kingdom(L) prepared for you(M) from the foundation of the world. 35For(N) I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you(O) gave me drink,(P) I was a stranger and you welcomed me, 36(Q) I was naked and you clothed me,(R) I was sick and you(S) visited me,(T) I was in prison and you came to me.' 37Then the righteous will answer him, saying, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? 38And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? 39And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?' 40And(U) the King will answer them,(V) 'Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these(W) my brothers,[a] you did it to me.'

41"Then he will say to those on his left,(X) 'Depart from me, you(Y) cursed, into(Z) the eternal fire prepared for(AA) the devil and his angels. 42For(AB) I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, 43I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.' 44Then they also will answer, saying, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to you?' 45Then he will answer them, saying, 'Truly, I say to you, as you did not do it to one of the least of these,(AC) you did not do it to me.' 46And these will go away(AD) into eternal punishment, but the righteous(AE) into eternal life."

Offertory

Out of the depths I have cried to You, O LORD; Lord, hear my voice: Out of the depths I have cried to You, O LORD. (Psalm 130)

Daily Lectionary

First Reading: Jer. 29:1-19

Jeremiah’s Letter to the Exiles

1These are the words of the letter that Jeremiah the prophet sent from Jerusalem to(A) the surviving elders of the exiles, and to(B) the priests, the prophets, and all the people, whom Nebuchadnezzar had taken into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon. 2This was after(C) King Jeconiah and the queen mother, the eunuchs, the officials of Judah and Jerusalem, the craftsmen, and the metal workers had departed from Jerusalem. 3The letter was sent by the hand of Elasah the son of(D) Shaphan and Gemariah the son of(E) Hilkiah, whom Zedekiah king of Judah sent to Babylon to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon. It said: 4"Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, to all the exiles whom I have sent into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon: 5(F) Build houses and live in them; plant gardens and eat their produce. 6Take wives and have sons and daughters; take wives for your sons, and give your daughters in marriage, that they may bear sons and daughters; multiply there, and do not decrease. 7But seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and(G) pray to the LORD on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare. 8For thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel:(H) Do not let your prophets and(I) your diviners who are among you deceive you, and do not listen to the dreams that they dream,[a] 9for(J) it is a lie that they are prophesying to you in my name;(K) I did not send them, declares the LORD.

10"For thus says the LORD:(L) When seventy years are completed for Babylon,(M) I will visit you,(N) and I will fulfill to you my promise and bring you back to this place. 11(O) For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans for welfare[b] and not for evil,(P) to give you a future and a hope. 12(Q) Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you. 13(R) You will seek me and find me, when you seek me(S) with all your heart. 14I will be found by you, declares the LORD,(T) and I will restore your fortunes and(U) gather you from all the nations and all the places(V) where I have driven you, declares the LORD, and I will bring you back to the place from which I sent you into exile.

15"Because you have said, 'The LORD has raised up prophets for us in Babylon,' 16thus says the LORD concerning(W) the king who sits on the throne of David, and concerning all the people who dwell in this city, your kinsmen who did not go out with you into exile: 17'Thus says the LORD of hosts, behold, I am sending on them(X) sword, famine, and pestilence, and I will make them like(Y) vile figs that are so rotten they cannot be eaten. 18I will pursue them with(Z) sword, famine, and pestilence,(AA) and will make them a horror to all the kingdoms of the earth,(AB) to be a curse, a terror, a hissing, and a reproach among all the nations(AC) where I have driven them, 19because they did not pay attention to my words, declares the LORD,(AD) that I persistently sent to you by my servants the prophets, but you would not listen, declares the LORD.'

Second Reading: Matt. 26:36-56

Jesus Prays in Gethsemane

36(A) Then Jesus went with them(B) to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, "Sit here, while I go over there and pray." 37And taking with him(C) Peter and(D) the two sons of Zebedee, he began to be sorrowful and troubled. 38Then he said to them, (E) "My soul is very sorrowful, even to death; remain here, and(F) watch[a] with me." 39And going a little farther he fell on his face(G) and prayed, saying, "My Father, if it be possible, let(H) this cup pass from me;(I) nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will." 40And he came to the disciples and found them sleeping. And he said to Peter, "So, could you not watch with me one hour? 41(J) Watch and(K) pray that you(L) may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak." 42Again, for the second time, he went away and prayed, "My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it,(M) your will be done." 43And again he came and found them sleeping, for(N) their eyes were heavy. 44So, leaving them again, he went away and prayed for(O) the third time, saying the same words again. 45Then he came to the disciples and said to them, "Sleep and take your rest later on.[b] See,(P) the hour is at hand, and(Q) the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 46Rise, let us be going; see, my betrayer is at hand."

Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus

47(R) While he was still speaking,(S) Judas came, one of the twelve, and with him a great crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the elders of the people. 48Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, "The one I will kiss is the man; seize him." 49And he came up to Jesus at once and said, "Greetings,(T) Rabbi!" And he kissed him. 50Jesus said to him, (U) "Friend,(V) do what you came to do."[c] Then they came up and laid hands on Jesus and seized him. 51And behold, one of those who were with Jesus stretched out his hand and drew his(W) sword and struck the servant[d] of the high priest and cut off his ear. 52Then Jesus said to him, "Put your sword back into its place. For(X) all who take the sword will perish by the sword. 53(Y) Do you think that I cannot appeal to my Father, and he will at once send me(Z) more than twelve(AA) legions of angels? 54(AB) But how then should the Scriptures be fulfilled, that it must be so?" 55At that hour Jesus said to the crowds, "Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs to capture me? Day after day(AC) I sat in the temple(AD) teaching, and you did not seize me. 56But(AE) all this has taken place that the Scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled."(AF) Then all the disciples left him and fled.

Sunday Father Reading

"God said in Exodus (chapter 12), 'You shall eat it in haste.' When He says that it is to be eaten in haste, He commands that we should take the Sacrament of the Lord's Body and Blood, not with a slow heart or reluctant lips, but as men who truly hunger and thirst after righteousness."
