1st Prayer: December 18,2010

To you, Lord Jesus, one of the divine essence,

whom we tasted, thereby coming to know the Father

and Holy Spirit,

to you, teacher who taught us

the all-rewarding ways of the church,

to you who dwell in this light-filled house of prayer

dedicated to the salvation of good souls

to you, ruler of all, Holy Trinity

with hearts spread forth and hands outstretched,

we offer this incense of words

forever, with grace and thanksgiving

Scriptural Readings:

Wisdom 7:12-20.

Ecclesiasticus 7:12-20

Ecclesiasticus 7:12 Devise not a lie against thy brother; neither do the like to thy friend.

Ecclesiasticus 7:13 Use not to make any manner of lie: for the custom thereof is not good.

Ecclesiasticus 7:14 Use not many words in a multitude of elders, and make not much babbling when thou prayest.

Ecclesiasticus 7:15 Hate not laborious work, neither husbandry, which the most High hath ordained.

Ecclesiasticus 7:16 Number not thyself among the multitude of sinners, but remember that wrath will not tarry long.

Ecclesiasticus 7:17 Humble thyself greatly: for the vengeance of the ungodly is fire and worms.

Ecclesiasticus 7:18 Change not a friend for any good by no means; neither a faithful brother for the gold of Ophir.

Ecclesiasticus 7:19 Forego not a wise and good woman: for her grace is above gold.

Ecclesiasticus 7:20 Whereas thy servant worketh truly, entreat him not evil. nor the hireling that bestoweth himself wholly for thee.

Isaiah 44:1-5.

Isaiah 44:1-5

44But now hear, O Jacob my servant, Israel whom I have chosen! 2Thus says the Lord who made you, who formed you in the womb and will help you: Do not fear, O Jacob my servant, Jeshurun whom I have chosen. 3For I will pour water on the thirsty land, and streams on the dry ground; I will pour my spirit upon your descendants, and my blessing on your offspring. 4They shall spring up like a green tamarisk, like willows by flowing streams. 5This one will say, “I am the Lord’s,” another will be called by the name of Jacob, yet another will write on the hand, “The Lord’s,” and adopt the name of Israel.

Hebrews 13:17-21.

Hebrews 13:17-2117Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls and will give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with sighing—for that would be harmful to you.

18Pray for us; we are sure that we have a clear conscience, desiring to act honorably in all things. 19I urge you all the more to do this, so that I may be restored to you very soon. 20Now may the God of peace, who brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, 21make you complete in everything good so that you may do his will, working among us that which is pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory forever and ever. Amen.

John 9:39-10:10

John 9:39-10:10

39Jesus said, “I came into this world for judgment so that those who do not see may see, and those who do see may become blind.” 40Some of the Pharisees near him heard this and said to him, “Surely we are not blind, are we?” 41Jesus said to them, “If you were blind, you would not have sin. But now that you say, ‘We see,’ your sin remains.

10“Very truly, I tell you, anyone who does not enter the sheepfold by the gate but climbs in by another way is a thief and a bandit. 2The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. 3The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep hear his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4When he has brought out all his own, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow him because they know his voice. 5They will not follow a stranger, but they will run from him because they do not know the voice of strangers.” 6Jesus used this figure of speech with them, but they did not understand what he was saying to them. 7So again Jesus said to them, “Very truly, I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep. 8All who came before me are thieves and bandits; but the sheep did not listen to them. 9I am the gate. Whoever enters by me will be saved, and will come in and go out and find pasture. 10The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.
