Righteousness Exalts—Sin Disgraces
KEY VERSE: "Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people," Proverbs 14:34.
As we look about us today, as Christians, we can only say, "Even so, come, Lord Jesus" (Rev. 22:20). Our nation is in terrible shape. We cannot say our nation is exalted, because there is no righteousness. Homosexuality is promoted as an alternate life-style, not a sin. The rich seem to get richer, the poor get poorer.
Ours is a tough, rugged, wicked world. Aggression, rebellion, violence, cutthroat competition and retaliation abound, not only as a nation, but even in our homes. The heart of mankind is totally and unashamedly depraved. Ours is not a righteous nation.
Read 2 Timothy 3:1-7 if you want a true description of our times. Perilous times—difficult, terrible—are described. The word used here means grievous, harsh, fierce and savage. Our nation is in a dark place with no light of its own. People of influence are always talking about enlightenment, but to them it means anything goes.
Many a believer has surrendered his mind to the prevailing system. Humanism, secularism and materialism have invaded our thinking to a marked degree. The seemingly omnipotent forces of conformity to peer pressure entrap many, and they fail to live righteously. Truly, sin is a reproach to our nation.
LIVING IT: Determine to live in righteousness, not sin.
