Psalm 72:1-7, 18-19

Psalm 72

1Give the king your justice, O God, and your righteousness to a king’s son.

2May he judge your people with righteousness, and your poor with justice.

3May the mountains yield prosperity for the people, and the hills, in righteousness.

4May he defend the cause of the poor of the people, give deliverance to the needy, and crush the oppressor.

5May he live while the sun endures, and as long as the moon, throughout all generations.

6May he be like rain that falls on the mown grass, like showers that water the earth.

7In his days may righteousness flourish and peace abound, until the moon is no more.

18Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, who alone does wondrous things.

19Blessed be his glorious name forever; may his glory fill the whole earth. Amen and Amen.

Isaiah 4:2-6

Isaiah 4:2-6

2On that day the branch of the Lord shall be beautiful and glorious, and the fruit of the land shall be the pride and glory of the survivors of Israel. 3Whoever is left in Zion and remains in Jerusalem will be called holy, everyone who has been recorded for life in Jerusalem, 4once the Lord has washed away the filth of the daughters of Zion and cleansed the bloodstains of Jerusalem from its midst by a spirit of judgment and by a spirit of burning. 5Then the Lord will create over the whole site of Mount Zion and over its places of assembly a cloud by day and smoke and the shining of a flaming fire by night. Indeed over all the glory there will be a canopy. 6It will serve as a pavilion, a shade by day from the heat, and a refuge and a shelter from the storm and rain.

Acts 1:12-17, 21-26

Acts 1:12-17, 21-26

12Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a sabbath day’s journey away. 13When they had entered the city, they went to the room upstairs where they were staying, Peter, and John, and James, and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James son of Alphaeus, and Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James. 14All these were constantly devoting themselves to prayer, together with certain women, including Mary the mother of Jesus, as well as his brothers.

15In those days Peter stood up among the believers (together the crowd numbered about one hundred twenty persons) and said, 16“Friends, the scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit through David foretold concerning Judas, who became a guide for those who arrested Jesus— 17for he was numbered among us and was allotted his share in this ministry.” 21So one of the men who have accompanied us during all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, 22beginning from the baptism of John until the day when he was taken up from us—one of these must become a witness with us to his resurrection.” 23So they proposed two, Joseph called Barsabbas, who was also known as Justus, and Matthias. 24Then they prayed and said, “Lord, you know everyone’s heart. Show us which one of these two you have chosen 25to take the place in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas turned aside to go to his own place.” 26And they cast lots for them, and the lot fell on Matthias; and he was added to the eleven apostles.

Thursday of Ad Te Levavi (Advent 1)

Read today's Higher Things Daily Reflection

December 2, 2010 - Thursday of the First Week of Advent

Today's Reading: Romans 13:8-14

Daily Lectionary: Isaiah 8:9-9:7; 1 Peter 4:1-19

But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts. (Romans 13:14)

In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. Advent teaches us to be ready for the coming of our Lord. He came in the flesh at His incarnation and birth. He comes to us in the Word and Sacraments. He will come again in glory on the Last Day. Advent is about getting us ready for His arrival. And how do we do that? By living in our baptism! St. Paul says to “put on the Lord Jesus Christ.” That's baptismal language. Those are words that remind us that we who are baptized have been “clothed with Christ.” (Galatians 3:27).

Then there are these words: “make no provision for the flesh.” Uh-oh. We often make provision for our flesh, our Old Adam, our sinful nature. The sinful nature wants to do whatever it wants, when it wants. Tell your parents off. Ignore your teachers. Gossip about your friends. Go too far on your date. Treat that weird kid like dirt. Going places online you don't belong. The flesh does whatever it wants. Stop! Repent! Run from the sin that makes you love the darkness more than the light. Flee to Christ whose Advent rescues you from sin and death.

Christ's first coming was in the flesh. He took on human flesh, because our flesh has been corrupted by sin. The pure and perfect and spotless flesh of Christ was given unto death for your sins on Calvary. Your flesh, stained and ruined with sin, has been washed by water, Word and Spirit at the font. You have been given to eat the holy flesh of Christ. By those gifts, your sinful flesh is put to death and the New Man arises, you put on Christ and live in the light. Putting on Christ, making no provision for the sinful flesh―these are the works of Advent. And they are Christ's work in you by the gifts He gives at every advent, ever coming to you by Word and Sacraments. In the Name of Jesus. Amen.

Sin's debt, that fearful burden, Cannot His love erase; Your guilt the Lord will pardon And cover by His grace. He comes, for you procuring The peace of sin forgiv'n, His children thus securing Eternal life in heav'n. (LSB 334:6)

Collect

Stir up Your power, O Lord, and come, that by Your protection we may be rescued from the threatening perils of our sins and saved by Your mighty deliverance; for You live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

First Reading: Is. 8:9-9:7

9Be broken,[a] you peoples, and(A) be shattered;[b]

give ear, all you far countries;strap on your armor and be shattered;

strap on your armor and be shattered. 10Take counsel together, but it will come to nothing;

speak a word,(B) but it will not stand,

for God(C) is with us.[c]

Fear God, Wait for the LORD

11For the LORD spoke thus to me with his strong hand upon me, and(D) warned me not to walk in the way of this people, saying: 12"Do not call(E) conspiracy all that this people calls conspiracy, and(F) do not fear what they fear, nor be in dread. 13But the LORD of hosts,(G) him you shall honor as holy. Let him be your fear, and let him be your dread. 14And he will become a(H) sanctuary and(I) a stone of offense and a rock of stumbling to both houses of Israel, a trap and a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem. 15And many(J) shall stumble on it. They shall fall and be broken; they shall be snared and taken."

16Bind up(K) the testimony;(L) seal the teaching[d] among my disciples. 17I will(M) wait for the LORD, who is(N) hiding his face from the house of Jacob, and I will hope in him. 18(O) Behold, I and(P) the children whom the LORD has given me are signs and portents in Israel from the LORD of hosts, who dwells on Mount Zion. 19And when they say to you, "Inquire of the(Q) mediums and the necromancers who chirp and mutter," should not a people inquire of their God? Should they inquire of(R) the dead on behalf of the living? 20(S) To the teaching and to the testimony! If they will not speak according to this word, it is because they have no(T) dawn. 21They will pass through the land,[e] greatly distressed and hungry. And when they are hungry, they will be enraged and will speak contemptuously against[f] their king and their God, and turn their faces upward. 22(U) And they will look to the earth, but behold, distress and darkness, the gloom of anguish. And they will be thrust into(V) thick darkness.

For to Us a Child Is Born

1[g] But there will be no(W) gloom for her who was in anguish. In the former time he(X) brought into contempt the land of(Y) Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the latter time he(Z) has made glorious the way of the sea, the land beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations.[h]

2[i](AA) The people(AB) who walked in darkness

have seen a great light;those who dwelt in a land of(AC) deep darkness,

on them has light shined. 3(AD) You have multiplied the nation;

you have increased its joy;they rejoice before you

as with(AE) joy at the harvest,

as they(AF) are glad(AG) when they divide the spoil. 4(AH) For the yoke of his burden,

(AI) and the staff for his shoulder,

the rod of his oppressor,

you have broken as(AJ) on the day of Midian. 5(AK) For every boot of the tramping warrior in battle tumult

and every garment rolled in blood

will be burned as fuel for the fire. 6(AL) For to us a child is born,

to us(AM) a son is given;(AN) and the government shall be(AO) upon[j] his shoulder,

and his name shall be called[k]Wonderful(AP) Counselor,(AQ) Mighty God,

(AR) Everlasting(AS) Father, Prince of(AT) Peace. 7Of the increase of his government and of peace

(AU) there will be no end,on the throne of David and over his kingdom,

to establish it and to uphold it(AV) with justice and with righteousness

from this time forth and forevermore.(AW) The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this.

Second Reading: 1 Pt. 4:1-19

Stewards of God’s Grace

1Since therefore(A) Christ suffered in the flesh,[a](B) arm yourselves with the same way of thinking, for(C) whoever has suffered in the flesh(D) has ceased from sin, 2(E) so as to live for(F) the rest of the time in the flesh(G) no longer for human passions but(H) for the will of God. 3For the time that is past(I) suffices(J) for doing what the Gentiles want to do, living in sensuality, passions, drunkenness, orgies, drinking parties, and lawless idolatry. 4With respect to this they are surprised when you do not join them in the same flood of(K) debauchery, and(L) they malign you; 5but they will give account to him who is ready(M) to judge the living and the dead. 6For this is why(N) the gospel was preached even to those who are dead, that though judged in the flesh the way people are, they might live in the spirit the way God does.

7(O) The end of all things is at hand; therefore(P) be self-controlled and sober-minded(Q) for the sake of your prayers. 8Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since(R) love covers a multitude of sins. 9(S) Show hospitality to one another without grumbling. 10(T) As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another,(U) as good stewards of God’s varied grace: 11whoever speaks, as one who speaks(V) oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves(W) by the strength that God supplies—in order that in everything(X) God may be glorified through Jesus Christ.(Y) To him belong glory and(Z) dominion forever and ever. Amen.

Suffering as a Christian

12Beloved, do not be surprised at(AA) the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. 13But rejoice(AB) insofar as you share Christ’s sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad(AC) when his glory is revealed. 14(AD) If you are insulted(AE) for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory[b] and of God rests upon you. 15But(AF) let none of you suffer as a murderer or a thief or an evildoer or(AG) as a meddler. 16Yet(AH) if anyone suffers as a(AI) Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God(AJ) in that name. 17For it is time for judgment(AK) to begin at the household of God; and(AL) if it begins with us, what will be the outcome for those who(AM) do not obey the gospel of God? 18And

(AN) "If the righteous is scarcely saved,

what will become of the ungodly and the sinner?"[c]

19Therefore let those who suffer according to God’s will(AO) entrust their souls to a faithful Creator while doing good.
