Isaiah 35:1-10
Isaiah 35:1-10
35The wilderness and the dry land shall be glad, the desert shall rejoice and blossom; like the crocus 2it shall blossom abundantly, and rejoice with joy and singing. The glory of Lebanon shall be given to it, the majesty of Carmel and Sharon. They shall see the glory of the Lord, the majesty of our God. 3Strengthen the weak hands, and make firm the feeble knees. 4Say to those who are of a fearful heart, “Be strong, do not fear! Here is your God. He will come with vengeance, with terrible recompense. He will come and save you.”
5Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf unstopped; 6then the lame shall leap like a deer, and the tongue of the speechless sing for joy. For waters shall break forth in the wilderness, and streams in the desert; 7the burning sand shall become a pool, and the thirsty ground springs of water; the haunt of jackals shall become a swamp, the grass shall become reeds and rushes. 8A highway shall be there, and it shall be called the Holy Way; the unclean shall not travel on it, but it shall be for God’s people; no traveler, not even fools, shall go astray. 9No lion shall be there, nor shall any ravenous beast come up on it; they shall not be found there, but the redeemed shall walk there. 10And the ransomed of the Lord shall return, and come to Zion with singing; everlasting joy shall be upon their heads; they shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.
Psalm 146:5-10
5Happy are those whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the Lord their God,
6who made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them; who keeps faith forever;
7who executes justice for the oppressed; who gives food to the hungry. The Lord sets the prisoners free;
8the Lord opens the eyes of the blind. The Lord lifts up those who are bowed down; the Lord loves the righteous.
9The Lord watches over the strangers; he upholds the orphan and the widow, but the way of the wicked he brings to ruin.
10The Lord will reign forever, your God, O Zion, for all generations. Praise the Lord!
or Luke 1:46b-55
Luke 1:46b-5546And Mary said, “My soul magnifies the Lord, 47and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, 48for he has looked with favor on the lowliness of his servant. Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed; 49for the Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is his name. 50His mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation. 51He has shown strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts. 52He has brought down the powerful from their thrones, and lifted up the lowly; 53he has filled the hungry with good things, and sent the rich away empty. 54He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy, 55according to the promise he made to our ancestors, to Abraham and to his descendants forever.”
James 5:7-10
James 5:7-107Be patient, therefore, beloved, until the coming of the Lord. The farmer waits for the precious crop from the earth, being patient with it until it receives the early and the late rains. 8You also must be patient. Strengthen your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is near. 9Beloved, do not grumble against one another, so that you may not be judged. See, the Judge is standing at the doors! 10As an example of suffering and patience, beloved, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord.
Matthew 11:2-11
Matthew 11:2-112When John heard in prison what the Messiah was doing, he sent word by his disciples 3and said to him, “Are you the one who is to come, or are we to wait for another?” 4Jesus answered them, “Go and tell John what you hear and see: 5the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor have good news brought to them. 6And blessed is anyone who takes no offense at me.”
7As they went away, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to look at? A reed shaken by the wind? 8What then did you go out to see? Someone dressed in soft robes? Look, those who wear soft robes are in royal palaces. 9What then did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. 10This is the one about whom it is written, ‘See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.’ 11Truly I tell you, among those born of women no one has arisen greater than John the Baptist; yet the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.

Daily Lectionary: Isaiah 29:1-14; Jude 1-25
And when John had heard in prison about the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples and said to Him, "Are You the Coming One, or do we look for another?" Jesus answered and said to them, "Go and tell John the things which you hear and see (Matthew 11:2-4)
In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. Could it be? Could John the Baptist, the prophet who pointed to Jesus and called Him the “Lamb of God” —could it be that He is doubting? That he isn't sure? If John the Baptist isn't sure if Jesus is the Savior, what hope is there for us?
The hope is in what Jesus said and did. John, suffering in prison, is reminded by Jesus that the things He is doing, the miracles he performs, are all signs pointed to in the Old Testament. Healing the sick and raising the dead and preaching repentance and the forgiveness of sins—these are all signs that say, “This is the Savior! Here He is!”
When John doubted, Jesus pointed to the signs that showed He was the Christ. When you doubt, where do you look? To the signs that point to Jesus as the Christ. First of all, look at the eyewitness testimony about what Jesus said and did, and the Old Testament signs He fulfilled in healing the sick and raising the dead. Then look to His death on the cross, fulfilling what the prophets preached. Then look to His resurrection on Easter, which the Scriptures and His own words promise would happen. These signs all point us to the fact that Jesus IS the One who was to come and rescue us from sin and death.
But there are more signs for you to cling to when you doubt. No other religion has a teacher who has died and risen. But Jesus has. He points you to the waters of your Baptism, the preaching and absolution of your pastor, and the supper of His body and blood as sure and certain signs that He is the One who was to come and has come and will come again. The Word and Sacraments testify of Jesus and declare His love and forgiveness to you. Now you, along with John the Baptist and the saints through the ages, have the sure and certain testimony that Jesus really and truly is the Lamb of God who has taken away your sins. In the Name of Jesus. Amen.
Lord, we implore You, give ear to our prayers and lighten the darkness of our hearts by Your gracious visitation; for You now live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. (Collect for Advent 3)

Lord Jesus Christ, we implore You to hear our prayers and to lighten the darkness of our hearts by Your gracious visitation; for You live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Antiphon:
Rejoice in the Lord
always.*
Again will I
say, rejoice!
Let your gentleness be known to
all men.*
The Lord
is at hand. (Philippians 4:4-5)
Psalm:
LORD, You have been favourable
to Your land;*
You have brought back the captivity of
Jacob.
You have forgiven the iniquity of Your
people;*
You have covered
all their sin.
Will You not revive
us again,*
that Your people may re-
joice in You?
I will hear what God the
Lord will speak,*
for He will speak peace to His
people. (Psalm 85:1-2, 6, 8)
Old Testament: Isaiah 40:1-11
Comfort for God’s People
1(A) Comfort, comfort my people, says your God. 2(B) Speak tenderly to Jerusalem,
and cry to herthat(C) her warfare[a] is ended,
that her iniquity is pardoned,that she has received from the LORD’s hand
double for all her sins.
3(D) A voice cries:[b](E) "In the wilderness prepare the way of the LORD;
(F) make straight in the desert a highway for our God. 4(G) Every valley shall be lifted up,
and every mountain and hill be made low;the uneven ground shall become level,
and the rough places a plain. 5(H) And the glory of the LORD shall be revealed,
and all flesh shall see it together,
(I) for the mouth of the LORD has spoken."
The Word of God Stands Forever
6A voice says, "Cry!"
And I said,[c] "What shall I cry?"(J) All flesh is grass,
and all its beauty[d] is like the flower of the field. 7The grass withers, the flower fades
when the breath of the LORD blows on it;
surely the people are grass. 8(K) The grass withers, the flower fades,
but the word of our God will stand forever.
The Greatness of God
9Get you up to a high mountain,
O Zion,(L) herald of good news;[e]lift up your voice with strength,
O Jerusalem, herald of good news;[f]
lift it up, fear not;say to the cities of Judah,
"Behold your God!" 10(M) Behold, the Lord GOD comes with might,
and his arm rules for him;(N) behold, his reward is with him,
and his recompense before him. 11(O) He will tend his flock like a shepherd;
(P) he will gather the lambs in his arms;(Q) he will carry them in his bosom,
and gently lead those that are with young.

The Ministry of Apostles
1This is how one should regard us, as servants of Christ and(A) stewards of the mysteries of God. 2Moreover, it is required of stewards that they be found trustworthy. 3But with me it is a very small thing that I should be judged by you or by any human court. In fact, I do not even judge myself. 4(B) For I am not aware of anything against myself,(C) but I am not thereby acquitted. It is the Lord who judges me. 5Therefore(D) do not pronounce judgment before the time,(E) before the Lord comes,(F) who will bring to light the things now hidden in darkness and will disclose the purposes of the heart.(G) Then each one will receive his commendation from God.

The Siege of Jerusalem
1Ah, Ariel, Ariel,
the city(A) where David encamped!Add year to year;
let the feasts run their round. 2Yet I will distress Ariel,
and there shall be moaning and lamentation,
and she shall be to me like an Ariel.[a] 3(B) And I will encamp against you all around,
and will besiege you(C) with towers
and I will raise siegeworks against you. 4(D) And you will be brought low; from the earth you shall speak,
and from the dust your speech will be bowed down;your voice shall come from the ground like(E) the voice of a ghost,
and from the dust your speech shall whisper.
5But the multitude of your foreign foes shall be like(F) small dust,
and the multitude of the ruthless like passing chaff.(G) And in an instant, suddenly,
6(H) you will be visited by the LORD of hostswith thunder and with earthquake and great noise,
with whirlwind and tempest, and the flame of a devouring fire. 7And(I) the multitude of all the nations that fight against Ariel,
all that fight against her and her stronghold and distress her,
shall be(J) like a dream, a vision of the night. 8(K) As when a hungry man dreams he is eating
and awakes with his hunger not satisfied,or as when a thirsty man dreams he is drinking
and awakes faint, with his thirst not quenched,so shall the multitude of all the nations be
that fight against Mount Zion.
9Astonish yourselves[b] and be astonished;
blind yourselves and be blind!Be drunk, but not with wine;
(L) stagger, but not with strong drink! 10(M) For the LORD has poured out upon you
a spirit of deep sleep,and has closed your eyes (the prophets),
and covered your heads (the seers).
11And the vision of all this has become to you like the words of a book that is(N) sealed. When men give it to one who can read, saying, "Read this," he says, "I cannot, for it is sealed." 12And when they give the book to one who cannot read, saying, "Read this," he says, "I cannot read."
13And the Lord said:"Because(O) this people(P) draw near with their mouth
and honor me with their lips,
while their hearts are far from me,and their fear of me is a commandment taught by men, 14therefore, behold,(Q) I will again
do wonderful things with this people,
with wonder upon wonder;and(R) the wisdom of their wise men shall perish,
and the discernment of their discerning men shall be hidden."

Second Reading: Jude 1-25
Greeting
1Jude, a servant[a] of Jesus Christ and brother of James,
(A) To those who are called,(B) beloved in God the Father and(C) kept for[b] Jesus Christ:
2May(D) mercy,(E) peace, and love be multiplied to you.
Judgment on False Teachers
3Beloved, although I was very eager to write to you about our(F) common salvation, I found it necessary to write appealing to you(G) to contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints. 4For(H) certain people(I) have crept in unnoticed(J) who long ago were designated for this condemnation, ungodly people, who pervert(K) the grace of our God into sensuality and(L) deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ.
5Now I want(M) to remind you, although you once fully knew it, that(N) Jesus, who saved[c] a people out of the land of Egypt,(O) afterward destroyed those who did not believe. 6And(P) the angels who did not stay within their own position of authority, but left their proper dwelling, he has kept in eternal chains under gloomy darkness until the judgment of the great day— 7just as(Q) Sodom and Gomorrah and(R) the surrounding cities, which likewise indulged in sexual immorality and(S) pursued unnatural desire,[d] serve as an example by undergoing a punishment of eternal fire.
8Yet in like manner these people also, relying on their dreams, defile the flesh, reject authority, and(T) blaspheme the glorious ones. 9But when(U) the archangel(V) Michael, contending with the devil, was disputing(W) about the body of Moses, he did not presume to pronounce a blasphemous judgment, but said,(X) "The Lord rebuke you." 10(Y) But these people blaspheme all that they do not understand, and they are destroyed by all that they, like unreasoning animals, understand instinctively. 11Woe to them! For they walked in(Z) the way of Cain and abandoned themselves for the sake of gain(AA) to Balaam’s error and(AB) perished in Korah’s rebellion. 12These are hidden reefs[e](AC) at your love feasts, as they feast with you without fear,(AD) shepherds feeding themselves;(AE) waterless clouds,(AF) swept along by winds; fruitless trees in late autumn, twice dead,(AG) uprooted; 13(AH) wild waves of the sea, casting up the foam of(AI) their own shame;(AJ) wandering stars,(AK) for whom the gloom of utter darkness has been reserved forever.
14It was also about these that Enoch,(AL) the seventh from Adam, prophesied, saying,(AM) "Behold, the Lord comes with ten thousands of his holy ones, 15(AN) to execute judgment on all and to convict all the ungodly of all their deeds of ungodliness that they have(AO) committed in such an ungodly way, and of all(AP) the harsh things that ungodly sinners have spoken against him." 16These are grumblers, malcontents,(AQ) following their own sinful desires;(AR) they are loud-mouthed boasters,(AS) showing favoritism to gain advantage.
A Call to Persevere
17But you must(AT) remember, beloved, the predictions of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ. 18They[f] said to you,(AU) "In the last time there will be scoffers, following their own ungodly passions." 19It is these who cause divisions, worldly people,(AV) devoid of the Spirit. 20But you, beloved,(AW) building yourselves up in your most holy faith and(AX) praying in the Holy Spirit, 21(AY) keep yourselves in the love of God,(AZ) waiting for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life. 22And have mercy on those who doubt; 23save others by(BA) snatching them out of(BB) the fire; to others show mercy(BC) with fear, hating even(BD) the garment[g] stained by the flesh.
Doxology
24(BE) Now to him who is able(BF) to keep you from stumbling and(BG) to present you(BH) blameless before the presence of his glory with great joy, 25to(BI) the only God, our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord,(BJ) be glory, majesty, dominion, and authority, before all time and now and forever. Sunday Father Reading
"The faithful received manna, having already passed through the Red Sea. That sea signified Christ's Baptism. To what does He lead them who believe and are baptized? To the Manna. Mark my words: to the Manna! It is known what the Jews received. But catechumens do not know what Christians receive. Let them blush to be so ignorant. Let them pass through the Red Sea and eat this Manna, that just as they have believed in the Name of Jesus, so Jesus may commit Himself to them." [St. Augustine. "Treatise II on John 3." 5th Century]
