Eve of the Nativity (Christmas Eve)

Read today's Higher Things Daily Reflection

December 24, 2010 - The Nativity of Our Lord: Christmas Eve

Today's Reading: Luke 2:1-20

Daily Lectionary: Isaiah 44:21-45:13,20-25; Revelation 12:1-17

"For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be the sign to you: You will find a Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger." (Luke 2:11-12)

In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. Here is the first sermon that points directly to Christ, preached by the angels on the day of His birth. The angels, in the skies over the fields of Bethlehem, tell the shepherds WHO Jesus is: “A Savior, who is Christ the Lord” WHAT He has done, “He is born.” and WHERE to find Him: “Wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.” From then on, all preaching of Christ does the same thing—telling us WHO Jesus is, WHAT He has done for us and WHERE we may find and receive Him.

WHO is He? He is the Son of God, and the Son of David. He is true God and true man, born of the Virgin. He is Immanuel, God-with-us, and the Prince of Peace and the Light of the World and the Bread of Life. He is the Son of God and the Son of Man. He is Jesus, who saves His people from their sins.

WHAT has He done? He has been born for you. He was baptized for you. He faced temptation for you. He taught and prayed and preached and healed for you. He was arrested for you, beaten for you, mocked for you, suffered for you and died for you. He rose for you and ascended for you. He has accomplished your salvation, ransomed you from the devil and the grave. He has overcome death for you and brought you the peace of God.

WHERE is He to be found? There, in a manger. In the arms of the Virgin. In the Jordan River. In Capernaum, Nazareth, Nain, Jericho and Jerusalem. In the hall of the High Priest. In the Praetorium of the Governor. On the cross. In the tomb. Alive among His disciples. At the right hand of God. At the holy font. In the pulpit. In His Word, the Scriptures. At the altar with His Body and Blood for you to eat and drink. You can't miss Him there. He's there for you, so you may be certain that what He has done was done for you.

Today is born this day, in the city of David, a Savior which is Christ the Lord, in the manger, in the swaddling clothes. On the cross. In His church. The Son of God, born for you. In the Name of Jesus. Amen.

Flocks were sleeping, Shepherds keeping Vigil till the morning new Saw the glory, Heard the story, Tidings of a Gospel true. Thus rejoicing, Free from sorrow, Praises voicing, Greet the morrow: Christ the child was born for you! Christ the child was born for you! (LSB 393:2)

Collect

O God, You make this most holy night to shine with the brightness of the true Light. Grant that as we have known the mysteries of that Light on earth, we may also come to the fullness of His joys in heaven; through the same Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Old Testament: Isaiah 9:2-7

2[a](A) The people(B) who walked in darkness

have seen a great light;those who dwelt in a land of(C) deep darkness,

on them has light shined. 3(D) You have multiplied the nation;

you have increased its joy;they rejoice before you

as with(E) joy at the harvest,

as they(F) are glad(G) when they divide the spoil. 4(H) For the yoke of his burden,

(I) and the staff for his shoulder,

the rod of his oppressor,

you have broken as(J) on the day of Midian. 5(K) For every boot of the tramping warrior in battle tumult

and every garment rolled in blood

will be burned as fuel for the fire. 6(L) For to us a child is born,

to us(M) a son is given;(N) and the government shall be(O) upon[b] his shoulder,

and his name shall be called[c]Wonderful(P) Counselor,(Q) Mighty God,

(R) Everlasting(S) Father, Prince of(T) Peace. 7Of the increase of his government and of peace

(U) there will be no end,on the throne of David and over his kingdom,

to establish it and to uphold it(V) with justice and with righteousness

from this time forth and forevermore.(W) The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this.

Gospel: Luke 2:1-14

The Birth of Jesus Christ

1In those days(A) a decree went out from(B) Caesar Augustus that all the world should be(C) registered. 2This was the first(D) registration when[a] Quirinius(E) was governor of Syria. 3And all went to be registered, each to his own town. 4And Joseph also went up(F) from Galilee, from the town of(G) Nazareth, to Judea, to(H) the city of David, which is called(I) Bethlehem,(J) because he was of the house and lineage of David, 5to be registered with Mary, his betrothed,[b] who was with child. 6And(K) while they were there, the time came for her to give birth. 7And she gave birth to her firstborn son and(L) wrapped him in swaddling cloths and(M) laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in(N) the inn.

The Shepherds and the Angels

8And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9And an angel of the Lord(O) appeared to them, and(P) the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with fear. 10And the angel said to them, "Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all(Q) the people. 11For(R) unto you is born this day in(S) the city of David(T) a Savior, who is(U) Christ(V) the Lord. 12And(W) this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby(X) wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger." 13And suddenly there was with the angel(Y) a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying,

14(Z) "Glory to God(AA) in the highest,

(AB) and on earth(AC) peace among those with whom he is pleased!"[c]

Daily Lectionary

First Reading: Is. 44:21-45:13; Is. 44:20-25

The LORD Redeems Israel

21Remember these things, O Jacob,

and Israel, for you are(A) my servant;I formed you; you are my servant;

(B) O Israel, you will not be forgotten by me. 22(C) I have blotted out your transgressions like a cloud

and your sins like mist;return to me, for I have redeemed you.

23(D) Sing, O heavens, for the LORD has done it;

shout, O(E) depths of the earth;break forth into singing, O mountains,

O forest, and every tree in it!For the LORD has redeemed Jacob,

(F) and will be glorified[a] in Israel.

24Thus says the LORD,(G) your Redeemer,

(H) who formed you from the womb:(I) "I am the LORD, who made all things,

(J) who alone stretched out the heavens,

who spread out the earth by myself, 25who frustrates the signs of liars

and makes fools of diviners,(K) who turns wise men back

and makes their knowledge foolish, 26(L) who confirms the word of his servant

and fulfills the counsel of his messengers,who says of Jerusalem, 'She shall be inhabited,'

(M) and of the cities of Judah, 'They shall be built,

and I will raise up their ruins'; 27(N) who says to the deep, 'Be dry;

I will dry up your rivers'; 28who says of(O) Cyrus, 'He is(P) my shepherd,

and he shall fulfill all my purpose';saying of Jerusalem, 'She shall be built,'

(Q) and of the temple, 'Your foundation shall be laid.'"

Cyrus, God’s Instrument

1Thus says the LORD to(R) his anointed, to Cyrus,

(S) whose right hand I have grasped,to subdue nations before him

and(T) to loose the belts of kings,to open doors before him

that gates may not be closed: 2"I will go before you

and(U) level the exalted places,[b](V) I will break in pieces the doors of bronze

and cut through the bars of iron, 3(W) I will give you the treasures of darkness

and the hoards in secret places,that you may know that it is I, the LORD,

the God of Israel,(X) who call you by your name. 4For the sake of my servant Jacob,

and Israel my chosen,(Y) I call you by your name,

(Z) I name you, though you do not know me. 5(AA) I am the LORD, and there is no other,

besides me there is no God;

(AB) I equip you, though you do not know me, 6(AC) that people may know, from the rising of the sun

and from the west, that there is none besides me;

I am the LORD, and there is no other. 7I form light and create darkness,

I make well-being and(AD) create calamity,

I am the LORD, who does all these things.

8(AE) "Shower, O heavens, from above,

and(AF) let the clouds rain down righteousness;let the earth open, that salvation and righteousness may bear fruit;

let the earth cause them both to sprout;

I the LORD have created it.

9(AG) "Woe to him who strives with him who formed him,

a pot among earthen pots!(AH) Does the clay say to him who forms it, 'What are you making?'

or 'Your work has no handles'? 10Woe to him who says to a father, 'What are you begetting?'

or to a woman, 'With what are you in labor?'"

11Thus says(AI) the LORD,

the Holy One of Israel, and the one who formed him:(AJ) "Ask me of things to come;

will you command me(AK) concerning my children and(AL) the work of my hands?[c] 12(AM) I made the earth

and created man on it;it was my hands(AN) that stretched out the heavens,

and(AO) I commanded all their host. 13(AP) I have stirred him up in righteousness,

(AQ) and I will make all his ways level;(AR) he shall build my city

(AS) and set my exiles free,not for price or reward,"

says the LORD of hosts.

Second Reading: Rev. 12:1-17

The Woman and the Dragon

1And a great sign appeared in heaven: a woman(A) clothed with(B) the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars. 2She was pregnant and(C) was crying out in birth pains and the agony of giving birth. 3And another sign appeared in heaven: behold, a great(D) red dragon,(E) with seven heads and(F) ten horns, and on his heads(G) seven diadems. 4His tail swept down(H) a third of the stars of heaven and(I) cast them to the earth. And the dragon stood before the woman who was about to give birth, so that when she bore her child(J) he might devour it. 5She gave birth to a male child,(K) one who is to rule all the nations with a rod of iron, but her child was(L) caught up to God and to his throne, 6and the woman fled into the wilderness, where she has a place prepared by God, in which she is to be nourished for(M) 1,260 days.

Satan Thrown Down to Earth

7Now war arose in heaven,(N) Michael and(O) his angels fighting against the dragon. And the dragon and his angels fought back, 8but he was defeated, and there was no longer any place for them in heaven. 9And(P) the great dragon was thrown down,(Q) that ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan,(R) the deceiver of the whole world—(S) he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him. 10And I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, "Now(T) the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ have come, for the accuser of our brothers[a] has been thrown down,(U) who accuses them day and night before our God. 11And(V) they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for(W) they loved not their lives(X) even unto death. 12Therefore,(Y) rejoice, O heavens and you who dwell in them! But(Z) woe to you, O earth and sea, for the devil has come down to you in great wrath, because(AA) he knows that his time is short!"

13And when the dragon saw that he had been thrown down to the earth, he pursued(AB) the woman who had given birth to the male child. 14But the woman was given the two(AC) wings of the great eagle so that she might fly from the serpent(AD) into the wilderness, to the place where she is to be nourished(AE) for a time, and times, and half a time. 15The serpent poured water(AF) like a river out of his mouth after the woman, to sweep her away with a flood. 16But the earth came to the help of the woman, and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed the river that the dragon had poured from his mouth. 17Then the dragon became furious with the woman and went off(AG) to make war on the rest of(AH) her offspring,(AI) on those who keep the commandments of God and hold to(AJ) the testimony of Jesus.
