The Abrahamic Covenant

KEY VERSE: "In the same day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates," Genesis 15:18.

There was a time when agreements—covenants, if you will—meant something. Not so today. People buy homes, cars or recreational vehicles when they cannot afford them. There was a time when being foreclosed on meant bankruptcy and financial ruin. Not so today. Being foreclosed on seems to mean little to people. What it means is that their word means nothing. They cannot be trusted.

Not so with God. His covenants and promises are sure. He can be depended on. Abraham learned when he believed God, God could do the impossible. Yes, Abraham learned that, what God promises, He will perform. We can learn that, too. We can count on His promises.

God said, "Fear not" (verse 1). That is encouragement. He said, "I am thy shield" (verse 1). That is security. He promised "exceeding great reward" (verse 1). That is recompense. God never fails to reward those who seek to honor Him in every circumstance.

An old hymn says, in part, "Faith is the victory! ... That overcomes the world. His banner over us is love, Our sword the Word of God; We tread the road the saints above With shouts of triumph trod .... Faith is the victory! O glorious victory, That overcomes the world." Paul wrote triumphantly, "But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ" (1 Cor. 15:57).

LIVING IT: You have victory in Christ. Claim it!
