An Example of Judgment

KEY VERSE: "Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire," Jude 7.

Jude joined with Peter in using Sodom and Gomorrah as examples of God's judgment upon sin. Peter wrote, "And turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes condemned them with an overthrow, making them an ensample unto those that after should live ungodly" (2 Peter 2:6).

Certain sins are sure to bring God's judgment. The sin of the angels was rebellion against the throne of God. The sin of Israel was rebellion and unbelief. The sin of Sodom and Gomorrah was indulging in unnatural lust. We must conclude that apostates will be judged.

What is our hope? Timothy wrote, "Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine" (1 Tim. 4:16). That is, we must know the Word of God and have the courage to defend it.

We must reject apostates because they reject divine authority. Not only that, they practice hypocrisy. They involve themselves in our religious practices, but only for personal gain. The Lord keeps a record of their ungodly deeds, and we can be sure the time for judgment is coming. We may ask, "How long?" The psalmist gives us the answer, "Our God shall come, and shall not keep silence: a fire shall devour before him, and it shall be very tempestuous round about him" (Psalm 50:3).

Even so, come, Lord Jesus (Rev. 22:20).
