Abraham's Great Faith

KEY VERSE: "By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac: and he that had received the promises offered up his only begotten son," Hebrews 11:17.

There are only two ways to live. One way, and certainly the most common, is to live by sight, basing everything on what you can see. The other way is to live by faith, to base your life primarily on what you cannot see. The life of faith has some ingredients which were reflected in the life of Abraham. Ultimately, Abraham was not only the father of the Jews, he was the father of the faithful, the father of everyone who lives by faith in God.

The proof of Abraham's faith was his willingness to give back to God everything he had, including his son of promise. He knew that God was able to raise Isaac from the dead and would give his son back. He knew that God would not, could not, take his son permanently, or He would have to go back on His own word, which would be impossible.

Abraham showed the depth of his faith when he brought Isaac to the top of Mount Moriah. Abraham's faith produced a beautiful picture for us—God's providing a substitute for our sins.

LIVING IT: Be like Abraham, willing to give an obedient sacrifice to God.
