Friday of Epiphany 3

Read today's Higher Things Daily Reflection

January 28, 2011 - Friday of the Third Week after the Epiphany

Today's Reading: Romans 12:16-21

Daily Lectionary: Zechariah 6:1-7:14; Romans 16:17-27

Repay no one evil for evil. Have regard for good things in the sight of all men. (Romans 12:17)

In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. Do you carry a grudge against someone? Are you waiting to get even? You know the saying about payback! They did it to you. Something bad happens to them and we joke about “karma.” What goes around comes around. This is the world's way of teaching us to deal with people who hurt us. Hurt them back.

Compare that to Jesus. He was arrested. He was tried. He didn't even try to defend Himself. All He ever did was speak the truth. He was handed over, beaten mercilessly and swapped for a murderer. He hung on the cross while everyone made fun of Him for what? For nothing at all. Perhaps the world was most mad that He didn't even try to stick up for Himself. But what the world forgets is that if Jesus HAD stood up for Himself, we would have perished eternally.

By not defending Himself, by not striking back, by not taking revenge, Jesus saves those who always want there to be payback. He saves you. Those sins of wanting to get back at others are what put your Lord on a cross. Yet, it is His being on that cross and dying for you that wipes out those wicked desires to see bad things happen to the people you don't like!

And here are two promises the Lord gives. First is His promise that by your Baptism into His name, your Lord forgives your desire for revenge and harm to others. Second, He promises, by that same Baptism and through His Word and Sacraments, to grant you the Holy Spirit to work in you the godly desires to overcome that lust for vengeance. The Spirit works in you to teach you the true way of living as a follower of Jesus: by NOT paying people back with what they deserve.

After all, the Lord does not deal with your evil by being evil back, but by being your Savior and forgiving your sins. In the Name of Jesus. Amen.

Lord let me win my foes With kindly words and actions, And let me find good friends For counsel and correction. Help me, as You have taught, To love both great and small And by Your Spirit's might To live in peace with all. (LSB 696:4)

Collect

Almighty and everlasting God, mercifully look upon our infirmities and stretch forth the hand of Your majesty to heal and defend us; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

First Reading: Zech. 6:1-7:14

A Vision of Four Chariots

1Again I lifted my eyes and saw, and behold, four chariots came out from between two mountains. And the mountains were mountains of(A) bronze. 2The first chariot had(B) red horses, the second(C) black horses, 3the third(D) white horses, and the fourth chariot dappled horses—all of them strong.[a] 4Then I answered and said to(E) the angel who talked with me, "What are these, my lord?" 5And the angel answered and said to me,(F) "These are going out to the four winds of heaven, after(G) presenting themselves before(H) the LORD of all the earth. 6The chariot with the black horses goes toward(I) the north country, the white ones go after them, and the dappled ones go toward(J) the south country." 7When the strong horses came out, they were impatient to go and(K) patrol the earth. And he said, "Go, patrol the earth." So they patrolled the earth. 8Then he cried to me, "Behold, those who go toward(L) the north country have set my Spirit at rest in the north country."

The Crown and the Temple

9And the word of the LORD came to me: 10"Take from the exiles(M) Heldai, Tobijah, and(N) Jedaiah, who have arrived from Babylon, and go the same day to the house of Josiah, the son of(O) Zephaniah. 11Take from them silver and gold, and make a crown,(P) and set it on the head of(Q) Joshua, the son of Jehozadak, the high priest. 12And say to him, 'Thus says the LORD of hosts, "Behold, the man whose name is(R) the Branch: for he shall branch out from his place, and(S) he shall build the temple of the LORD. 13(T) It is he who shall build the temple of the LORD(U) and shall bear royal honor, and shall sit and rule on his throne. And there shall be a(V) priest on his throne,(W) and the counsel of peace shall be between them both."' 14And the crown shall be in the temple of the LORD as(X) a reminder to(Y) Helem,[b](Z) Tobijah, Jedaiah, and Hen the son of Zephaniah.

15(AA) "And those who are far off shall come and(AB) help to build the temple of the LORD.(AC) And you shall know that the LORD of hosts has sent me to you.(AD) And this shall come to pass, if you will diligently obey the voice of the LORD your God."

A Call for Justice and Mercy

1(AE) In the fourth year of King Darius, the word of the LORD came to Zechariah on the fourth day of the ninth month, which is(AF) Chislev. 2Now the people of Bethel had sent Sharezer and Regem-melech and their men(AG) to entreat the favor of the LORD, 3(AH) saying to the priests of the house of the LORD of hosts and(AI) the prophets, "Should I weep and(AJ) abstain in(AK) the fifth month, as I have done for so many years?"

4Then the word of the LORD of hosts came to me: 5"Say to all the people of the land and the priests, When you fasted and mourned in(AL) the fifth month and in(AM) the seventh, for these(AN) seventy years,(AO) was it for me that you fasted? 6(AP) And when you eat and when you drink, do you not eat for yourselves and drink for yourselves? 7(AQ) Were not these the words that the LORD proclaimed(AR) by the former prophets, when Jerusalem was inhabited and prosperous,(AS) with her cities around her, and the South and the lowland were inhabited?"

8And the word of the LORD came to Zechariah, saying, 9"Thus says the LORD of hosts,(AT) Render true judgments, show kindness and mercy to one another, 10(AU) do not oppress the widow, the fatherless, the sojourner,(AV) or the poor, and(AW) let none of you devise evil against another in your heart." 11But(AX) they refused to pay attention(AY) and turned a stubborn shoulder and stopped their ears that they might not hear.[c] 12(AZ) They made their hearts diamond-hard(BA) lest they should hear the law and the words that the LORD of hosts had sent(BB) by his Spirit through(BC) the former prophets. Therefore great anger came from the LORD of hosts. 13(BD) "As I[d] called, and they would not hear, so they called, and I would not hear," says the LORD of hosts, 14(BE) "and I scattered them with a whirlwind among all(BF) the nations that they had not known.(BG) Thus the land they left was desolate,(BH) so that no one went to and fro,(BI) and the pleasant land was made desolate."

Final Instructions and Greetings

17I appeal to you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and create obstacles(A) contrary to the doctrine that you have been taught;(B) avoid them. 18For such persons do not serve our Lord Christ, but(C) their own appetites,[a] and(D) by smooth talk and flattery they deceive the hearts of the naive. 19For(E) your obedience is known to all, so that I rejoice over you, but I want you(F) to be wise as to what is good and innocent as to what is evil. 20(G) The God of peace(H) will soon crush Satan under your feet.(I) The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.

21(J) Timothy, my fellow worker, greets you; so do Lucius and Jason and Sosipater, my kinsmen.

22I Tertius,(K) who wrote this letter, greet you in the Lord.

23(L) Gaius, who is host to me and to the whole church, greets you. Erastus, the city treasurer, and our brother Quartus, greet you.[b]

Doxology

25(M) Now to him who is able to strengthen you(N) according to my gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ,(O) according to the revelation of the mystery(P) that was kept secret for(Q) long ages 26but(R) has now been disclosed and through the prophetic writings has been made known to all nations, according to the command of the eternal God,(S) to bring about the obedience of faith— 27to(T) the only wise God(U) be glory forevermore through Jesus Christ! Amen.

Friday Father Reading

"Christ died for our sins. This is that Lamb which the Law tells us to eat in one house. What does this mean, 'in one house'? We are told to eat His flesh in the unity of the Church. Therefore it is necessary for us to feed on the Flesh of our Lamb with our loins girded, that is, our carnal passions put to death, with all purity of hearts and body." [St. Caesarius of Arles. "Homily 2 for Easter Day." 6th Century]
