Sow Bountifully

KEY VERSE: "But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully," 2 Corinthians 9:6.

In certain areas, and at a certain place in time, the farmer went out to sow by hand. He would strap on a canvas contraption, which looked somewhat like a kangaroo pouch, fill it with seed and go out to sow. He would cast seed everywhere. When a farmer sowed seed in his field, it looked like he was throwing it away. It seemed to be lost, but it was not really gone. In due time he got it back—with much more besides.

God is our example in giving liberally. He is a generous God and we as His children should never be stingy with our giving. God loves a cheerful giver.

Mary is a good example for us. She anointed Jesus with a priceless ointment, not a cut-rate oil. God rewards the bountiful sower. Jesus praised Mary by saying, "That this woman hath done, be told for a memorial of her" (Matt 26:13).

Givers can be divided into three types-the flint, the sponge and the honeycomb. Some givers are like a piece of flint-to get anything out of it you must hammer it, and even then you get only chips and sparks. Others are like a sponge—the more you squeeze it, the more you get. Others are like a honeycomb—overflowing with its own sweetness.

LIVING IT: We should give like God gives to us, and let Mary be our example for giving.

Mary McCalister
