Daily Lectionary: Exodus 4:19-31; Mark 15:16-32

And they brought Him to the place Golgotha, which is translated, Place of a Skull. (Mark 15:22)

In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. There's an old legend that says that the place where Jesus was crucified was where Adam was buried thousands of years before. Some icons of the crucifixion show a pile of bones right underneath the cross, a reference to this connection between the first Adam and the Second Adam, Jesus.

The point of making this connection is that when Jesus goes to the Place of a Skull, He is going to die. He is going to die, because Adam brought death into this world and to everyone since then (with the exception of Enoch and Elijah). But Adam's death and the death it brought to all of us has no happy ending. It's just death. The termination of life. The grave and judgment from God.

But the Second Adam brings life by His death. Adam was created alive and ended up dying. Jesus dies and ends up rising and bringing life for this world. He works backwards and undoes what Adam caused. On the Place of a Skull, the Son of God, the Giver of Life, takes on death, to give us life.

His death gives us life because it takes away the cause of our death: sin. When Jesus rises from the dead, He does so because death no longer can hold Him. Sins no longer stick to Him. Sin and death go together. Where Jesus is, forgiveness and life triumph over sin and death.

Jesus goes to the Place of a Skull so there's no doubt why He's here. To die. To conquer death. To give us life. What Adam has done has been undone. What Adam brought has been taken by the new Adam. The death the first Adam gave to you is overcome by the life the Second Adam gives to you. Through His Word and gifts, the life of the New Adam is yours, because He was at the Place of a Skull for you. In the Name of Jesus. Amen.

Be Thou my consolation, My shield, when I must die; Remind me of Thy passion When my last hour draws nigh. Mine eyes shall then behold Thee, Upon Thy cross shall dwell, My heart by faith enfold Thee, Who dieth thus dies well. (LSB 449:4)

Collect

Almighty God, by Your great goodness mercifully look upon Your people that we may be governed and preserved evermore in body and soul; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

First Reading: Ex. 4:19-31

19And the LORD said to Moses in Midian, "Go back to Egypt, for(A) all the men who were seeking your life are dead." 20So Moses took(B) his wife and his sons and had them ride on a donkey, and went back to the land of Egypt. And Moses took(C) the staff of God in his hand.

21And the LORD said to Moses, "When you go back to Egypt, see that you do before Pharaoh all the(D) miracles that I have put in your power. But(E) I will harden his heart, so that he will not let the people go. 22Then you shall say to Pharaoh, 'Thus says the LORD,(F) Israel is my(G) firstborn son, 23and I say to you, "Let my son go that he may serve me." If you refuse to let him go, behold, I(H) will kill your firstborn son.'"

24At a lodging place on the way(I) the LORD met him and(J) sought to put him to death. 25Then(K) Zipporah took a(L) flint and cut off her son’s foreskin and touched Moses’[a] feet with it and said, "Surely you are a bridegroom of blood to me!" 26So he let him alone. It was then that she said, "A bridegroom of blood," because of the circumcision.

27The LORD said to Aaron, "Go into the wilderness(M) to meet Moses." So he went and met him at the(N) mountain of God and kissed him. 28And Moses(O) told Aaron all the words of the LORD with which he had sent him to speak, and all(P) the signs that he had commanded him to do. 29Then Moses and Aaron(Q) went and gathered together all the elders of the people of Israel. 30(R) Aaron spoke all the words that the LORD had spoken to Moses and did the signs in the sight of the people. 31And the people(S) believed; and when they heard that the LORD had(T) visited the people of Israel and that he had(U) seen their affliction,(V) they bowed their heads and worshiped.

Second Reading: Mk. 15:16-32

Jesus Is Mocked

16(A) And the soldiers led him away inside(B) the palace (that is,(C) the governor’s headquarters),[a] and they called together the whole(D) battalion.[b] 17And they clothed him in(E) a purple cloak, and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on him. 18And they began to salute him,(F) "Hail, King of the Jews!" 19And they were striking his head with a reed and(G) spitting on him and(H) kneeling down in homage to him. 20And when they had(I) mocked him, they stripped him of(J) the purple cloak and put his own clothes on him. And they(K) led him out to crucify him.

The Crucifixion

21(L) And they compelled a passerby, Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to carry his cross. 22(M) And they brought him to the place called Golgotha (which means Place of a Skull). 23And they offered him wine mixed with(N) myrrh, but he did not take it. 24And they crucified him and(O) divided his garments among them, casting lots for them, to decide what each should take. 25And(P) it was the third hour[c] when they crucified him. 26And the inscription of the charge against him read,(Q) "The King of the Jews." 27And with him they crucified two(R) robbers,(S) one on his right and one on his left.[d] 29And(T) those who passed by derided him,(U) wagging their heads and saying,(V) "Aha!(W) You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, 30save yourself, and come down from the cross!" 31So also the chief priests with the scribes mocked him to one another, saying,(X) "He saved others;(Y) he cannot save himself. 32Let(Z) the Christ,(AA) the King of Israel, come down now from the cross that we may(AB) see and believe."(AC) Those who were crucified with him also reviled him.

Thursday Father Reading

"Learn how you should eat Christ's Body. You should eat it in memory of Christ's obedience unto death, so that 'those who live should no longer live for themselves, but for Him who died for them.'" [St. Basil. "Rule of Morals," Book 21. 4th Century]
