IV Kings 4:25-38In diébús illis: Venit múlier Sunamítis ad Eliséum in montem Carméli: cumque vidísset eam vir Dei a contra, ait ad Giézi púerum suum: Ecce Sunamítis illa. Quæ dixit illi: Numquid petívi fílium a dómino meo? Numquid non dixi tibi: Ne illúdas me? In those days, a Sunamite woman came to Eliseus to Mount Carmel: and when the man of God saw her coming towards, he said to Giezi his servant, Behold that Sunamitess. Go therefore to meet her, and say to her, Is all well with thee, and with thy husband, and with thy son? And she answered, Well. And when she came to the man of God to the mount, she caught hold on his feet: and Giezi came to remove her. And the man of God said, Let her alone, for her soul is in anguish, and the Lord hath hid it from me and hath not told me. And she said to him, Did I ask a son of my Lord? did I not say to thee, Do not deceive me? Then he said to Giezi, Gird up thy joins, and take my staff in thy hand and go. If any man meet thee, salute him not; and if any man salute thee, answer him not; and lay my staff upon the face of the child. But the mother of the child said, As the Lord liveth, and as thy soul liveth I will not leave thee. He arose, therefore, and followed her. But Giezi was gone before them, and laid the staff upon the face of the child, and there was no voice nor sense; and he returned to meet him, and told him, saying, The child is not risen. Eliseus therefore went into the house, and behold the child lay dead on his bed; and going in he shut the door upon him, and upon the child, and prayed to the Lord; and he went up and lay upon the child: and he put his mouth upon his mouth, and his eyes upon his eyes, and his hands upon his hands: and he bowed himself upon him, and the child's flesh grew warm. Then he returned and walked in the house, once to and fro; and he went up, and lay upon him; and the child gaped seven times, and opened his eyes. And he called Giezi, and said to him, Call this Sunamitess. And she being called,. went in to him, and he said, Take up thy son. She came and fell at his feet, and worshipped upon the ground; and took up her son, and went out, and Eliseus returned to Galgal.

At that time, Jesus went into a city called Naim; and there went with Him His disciples, and a great multitude. And when He came nigh to the city, behold a dead man was carried out, the only son of his mother; and she was a widow, and much people of the city were with her. And when the Lord saw her, He had compassion on her, and said to her, "Weep not." And He came near, and touched the bier. (And they that carried it stood still). And He said, "Young man, I say to thee arise:" and he that was dead sat up, and began to speak. And He delivered him to his mother. And there came a fear on them all and they glorified God, saying, A great prophet is risen up amongst us, and God hath visited His people.

Missa "Lætétur cor "
Today's Collecta is at the Church of St. Quiricus with the Station at St. Martin "ad montes" The Church of St. Quiricus (at one time St. Quiricus and Julitta, Oriental martyrs) is at the foot of the Quirinal hill.
Through the zeal of Pope Symmachus, two oratories were erected beside the ancient titulus equitii, dedicated to the first two confessors to whom after the martyrs liturgical cultus was paid, Sts. Martin and Sylvester. It is located on the Esquiline hill.
The Mass dates only from the time of Pope Gregory II; the sung parts are from other feasts. Both the Epistle and the Gospel recount a miracle of raising the dead to life; St. Martin of Tours was celebrated as the resuscitator of three dead persons. The story of Elisaeus is an example of the discretion needed by superiors in dealing with those under their care.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Who livest and reignest, with God the Father, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, one God
world without end.
R. Amen.

Lent Week 4: Thursday
Today's readings: Exodus 32:7-14; Psalm 105(106); John 5:31-47
The words of the covenant echo through the Scriptures - 'you will be my people and I will be your God'. This is the relationship established by God with the people of Israel, in the first place through Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, and then renewed through Moses, David and the other leaders and prophets of the people. As Christians we believe that the new covenant promised through the prophet Jeremiah is established in the work and person of Jesus Christ.
The first reading records a moment of tension in that covenant relationship. Knowing that the people have already lost faith and are worshipping a calf of molten metal God decides to dissolve his relationship with them. 'Your people', he says to Moses, 'whom you brought out of Egypt, have apostatised'. God's plan is to destroy them and begin again with a new group descended from Moses: 'of you I will make a great nation'.
But Moses, extraordinarily, helps God to be true to Himself! Why be angry with 'this people of yours', he says to God, 'whom you brought out of the land of Egypt'? It is as if he says: remember who they are and how you have already committed yourself to them, swearing by your own self. So, we are told, 'the Lord relented and did not bring on his people the disaster he had threatened'. It anticipates that moment in the parable of the Prodigal Son where the elder brother refers to 'this son of yours' only for the father to say 'your brother'. There are relationships that cannot be disowned no matter what difficulties may attend them. Covenant means pledged or committed love. Once enacted we are then forever related to those with whom we have made such commitments. We can never disown them for such is the nature of a covenant.
The difficulties of understanding and sustaining the relationship with God are recognised also in the gospel reading. The works I do, says Jesus, and the Father who sent me, bear witness to me. He is arguing with his listeners precisely about his work and mission. 'I am not going to accuse you before the Father', he continues, 'let Moses be your accuser'. We have just seen what kind of accuser Moses was, appealing on behalf of the people and calling God to be true to His commitment! Jesus is the new, and greater, Moses in whom a new, and greater, covenant is sealed. He is the new, and greater, Mediator in whose obedience man is reconciled to God and returns faithful love to God.
In God's fidelity, some like to say, we see what divine immutability implies: God has chosen us to be his people and he is our God. If we are now tempted to doubt this we have the blood of Jesus sealing a new and everlasting covenant. We may reject and try to forget God but God will never reject or forget us, for we are (literally) carved on the palm of his hand.

St. John Baptist de la Salle
(1651-1719)
Size: A A
Complete dedication to what he saw as God's will for him dominated the life of John Baptist de la Salle. In 1950, Pope Pius XII named him patron of schoolteachers for his efforts in upgrading school instruction. As a young seventeenth-century Frenchman, John had everything going for him: scholarly bent, good looks, noble family background, money, refined upbringing. At the early age of 11, he received the tonsure and started preparation for the priesthood, to which he was ordained at 27. He seemed assured then of a life of dignified ease and a high position in the Church.
But God had other plans for John, which were gradually revealed to him in the next several years. During a chance meeting with M. Nyel of Raven, he became interested in the creation of schools for poor boys in Raven, where he was stationed. Though the work was extremely distasteful to him at first, he became more involved in working with the deprived youths.
Once convinced that this was his divinely appointed mission, John threw himself wholeheartedly into the work, left home and family, abandoned his position as canon at Rheims, gave away his fortune and reduced himself to the level of the poor to whom he devoted his entire life.
The remainder of his life was closely entwined with the community of religious men he founded, the Brothers of the Christian School (Christian Brothers, or De La Salle Brothers). This community grew rapidly and was successful in educating boys of poor families using methods designed by John, preparing teachers in the first training college for teachers and also setting up homes and schools for young delinquents of wealthy families. The motivating element in all these endeavors was the desire to become a good Christian.
Yet even in his success, John did not escape experiencing many trials: heartrending disappointment and defections among his disciples, bitter opposition from the secular schoolmasters who resented his new and fruitful methods, and persistent opposition from the Jansenists of his time, whose moral regidity and pessimism abut the human condition John resisted vehemently all his life.
Afflicted with asthma and rheumatism in his last years, he died on Good Friday at 68 and was canonized in 1900.
Comment:
Complete dedication to one's calling by God, whatever it may be, is a rare quality. Jesus asks us to "love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength" (Mark 12:30b, emphasis added). Paul gives similar advice: "Whatever you do, do from the heart..." (Colossians 3:23).
Quote:
"What is nobler than to mold the character of the young? I consider that he who knows how to form the youthful mind is truly greater than all painters, sculptors and all others of that sort" (St. John Chrysostom).

Et ait homo Dei: Dimítte illam: ánima enim ejus In amaritúdine est, et Dóminus celávit a me, et non indicávit mihi.

GOSPEL

And he called Giezi, and said to him, Call this Sunamitess. And she being called,. went in to him, and he said, Take up thy son. She came and fell at his feet, and worshipped upon the ground; and took up her son, and went out, and Eliseus returned to Galgal.
Thanks be to God.

[Jesus raises the son of the widow of Naim and gives him back to his mother.]
Dominus vobiscum.

Sequentia sancti Evangelii secundum Lucam.
R.Gloria tibi, Domine
Laus tibi Christe.
The Lord be with you.
R. And with thy spirit.
The continuation of the holy Gospel according to Luke. R. Glory to Thee, O Lord
Praise be to Christ
