God’s Wisdom for Daily Living

Betty Miller shares her daily devotional based on the book of Proverbs. King Solomon, who wrote most of the Book of Proverbs, was endowed with both spiritual and practical wisdom that he received from God. We can have that same wisdom by studying this great book of wisdom and following its advice. Proverbs Day 25 (KJV):

Proverbs 3:27-29(KJV): "Withhold not good from them to whom it is due, when it is in the power of thine hand to do it. 28 Say not unto thy neighbour, Go, and come again, and to morrow I will give; when thou hast it by thee.

29 Devise not evil against thy neighbour, seeing he dwelleth securely by thee."

Thoughts for the Day

The Bible records so much good practical advice in the book of Proverbs. In these verses, we find instructions in regard to repayment of a loan or a favor. Here, we are told if we have the resources that are due to someone, we should pay them and not put them off. Many times friendships are strained, due to one person loaning money or things to another person and they keep putting off payment without a just cause. The Bible says in these verses that if we have it, we must not turn our neighbor away and tell him to come back later.

In this life, we all find ourselves in situations where we are asked to help someone. How should we respond? If we are able to help, we should reach out to those in need. This does not mean we are to give money to everyone who asks us, as there are many "con artists" and scams that are robbing people of their money. These verses are referring to neighbors and friends, so this means we are to help the people we know. We must always pray about situations, as sometime money is not the answer to their need. We may need to give of ourselves in time and effort to really help in the matter.

What about helping strangers? Although these verses are not referring to strangers, the Bible does address that kind of giving also. Being in the ministry for many years, we had many people come and ask for our help. We always tried to reach out and help the best way we could. Since our church building was located on a busy highway, we had many transients who would come and ask for money. We could smell alcohol on the breath of many of them. We knew when they asked for money for food or gas, they would usually end up buying more alcohol. After praying about this problem, we came up with an answer. We made arrangements with a local restaurant and gas station near the church to pay for meals and gas for people who ask for money for food or gas. In this manner, we knew our money was helping them, not hurting them. Of course, we always prayed for them too. Even if we cannot help in giving monetarily, we can always pray for people. Prayer is a form of giving also.

We are told in verse 29 to not talk about our neighbors nor do harm against them. As Christians, we should always try to live peaceably with all men. We should especially strive for peace with our neighbors, because we all need one another at times. In the future, we might be the ones that will need to ask for help, instead of the one called to give. The Amplified Bible translates verse 29 this way:

Proverbs 3:29(AMP): "Do not contrive or dig up or cultivate evil against your neighbor, who dwells trustingly and confidently beside you."

James 2:8: "If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well."

Prayer for the Day

Dear Father, Thank for the book of Proverbs. ? There is so much good advice in this book?? Help me to take it to heart and apply it to my life.? I see there is much is this book about relationships. ? Lord, I know if I am to be in a right relationship with You, I must be in a right relationship with my family, friends and neighbors.? Help me to be a good neighbor. Help me also be sensitive to the needs of others. Help me guard my mouth and forgive me, as I have at times, spoken unkindly about others. Lord, help me to be a generous giver and to have your discernment in my giving.? I ask you to empower me with Your Holy Spirit so that I might be loving in all my ways and truly love my neighbor as myself. In Jesus name, Amen.

Day By Day By Grace Bob Hoekstra January 25th New Covenant Provided by the Blood of Christ

"This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for you"…knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold…but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot. (Luke 22:20 and 1 Peter 1:18-19)

The well-known words from the Lord's Supper in Luke 22:20 remind us that the glorious riches of grace found in the new covenant are all provided by the shed blood of Jesus Christ, as He died on the cross for us. "This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for you." Customarily, we think of forgiveness of sins when we hear these words. Forgiveness is certainly included in the blessings secured by the death of our Lord. Notice, however, that Jesus did not say "this cup is forgiveness in My blood." He said, "This cup is the new covenant in My blood."

The new covenant is far more than forgiveness of sins. As previously indicated, the Scriptures reveal that the new covenant has three basic areas of blessings. First is the forgiveness of sins. "Their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more" (Hebrews 8:12). Second is an intimate relationship with the Lord. "All shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them" (Hebrews 8:11). Third is an internal work of God producing an increasingly godly life in and through us. "I will put My laws in their mind and write them on their hearts" (Hebrews 8:10). The word of God further confirms that all of these grand blessings depend upon God's provision, not our performance. "Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think of anything as being from ourselves, but our sufficiency is from God" (2 Corinthians 3:5).

How can it be that such measureless spiritual abundance becomes ours through the new covenant of grace? Well, consider the amazing and effective redemption price paid to establish this new covenant. "Knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold…but with the precious blood of Christ." This new covenant was not purchased with limited earthly wealth, like silver and gold. Rather, it was paid for by infinite heavenly treasure, the blood of Christ. No wonder the new covenant provides such amazing and effective resources for all who depend upon the One who died for them.

One final reflection—realizing all that the cup of the new covenant represents can turn the Lord's Supper from a "religious snack" into a "spiritual feast"!

Dear Heavenly Father, You have surely provided grace upon grace—complete forgiveness, intimate relationship, divine enablement! Yet, how could any less be supplied by such a rich price! Lord Jesus, thank You for pouring out Your life's blood to make such irreplaceable necessities available. Father, please bring to my remembrance day by day the wondrous riches of the new covenant that You want me to draw upon by faith, through Christ, my Lord, Amen.

The compelling blood of Christ offers great power to Christians as they fight this spiritual battle against evil. By the magnificent name of Jesus Christ, we can conquer all things and nothing shall destroy us! We are victorious because Christ is with us; therefore, no one could possibly be against us (Romans 8:31).

And canst thou not do this? Are there no mercies which thou hast experienced? What though thou art gloomy now, canst thou forget that blessed hour when Jesus met thee, and said, "Come unto me"? Canst thou not remember that rapturous moment when He snapped thy fetters, dashed thy chains to the earth, and said, "I came to break thy bonds and set thee free"? Or if the love of thine espousals be forgotten, there must surely be some precious milestone along the road of life not quite grown over with moss, on which thou canst read a happy memorial of His mercy towards thee? What, didst thou never have a sickness like that which thou art suffering now, and did He not restore thee? Wert thou never poor before, and did He not supply thy wants? Evening Reading "Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law." — Romans 3:31

When the believer is adopted into the Lord's family, his relationship to old Adam and the law ceases at once; but then he is under a new rule, and a new covenant. Believer, you are God's child; it is your first duty to obey your heavenly Father. A servile spirit you have nothing to do with: you are not a slave, but a child; and now, inasmuch as you are a beloved child, you are bound to obey your Father's faintest wish, the least intimation of His will. Does He bid you fulfil a sacred ordinance? It is at your peril that you neglect it, for you will be disobeying your Father. Does He command you to seek the image of Jesus? Is it not your joy to do so? Does Jesus tell you, "Be ye perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect"? Then not because the law commands, but because your Saviour enjoins, you will labour to be perfect in holiness. Does He bid his saints love one another? Do it, not because the law says, "Love thy neighbour," but because Jesus says, "If ye love Me, keep My commandments;" and this is the commandment that He has given unto you, "that ye love one another." Are you told to distribute to the poor? Do it, not because charity is a burden which you dare not shirk, but because Jesus teaches, "Give to him that asketh of thee." Does the Word say, "Love God with all your heart"? Look at the commandment and reply, "Ah! commandment, Christ hath fulfilled thee already—I have no need, therefore, to fulfill thee for my salvation, but I rejoice to yield obedience to thee because God is my Father now and He has a claim upon me, which I would not dispute." May the Holy Ghost make your heart obedient to the constraining power of Christ's love, that your prayer may be, "Make me to go in the path of Thy commandments; for therein do I delight." Grace is the mother and nurse of holiness, and not the apologist of sin.

Exodus 12-13; Matthew 16Fay Weldon went through what she thought was a near-death experience in 2006 when an allergic reaction stopped her heart. She retold her experience to Elizabeth Grice of the London Daily Telegraph. She said that a “terrible creature” tried to pull her through pearly gates, while doctors tried to pull her back. Later, she said, “If that was dying, I don’t want to do it again.” It’s “just more of the same. More struggle.”

Often the process of dying is a struggle. But death itself need not be feared by the believer in Christ—for it will bring us to heaven. In Revelation, John gives a wonderful description of what eternity with God will be like (21:1-4). He sees the New Jerusalem coming down out of heaven. The city of Jerusalem was a physical sign of the people of God and was described as the place where God dwells (Ps. 76:2). The New Jerusalem, on the other hand, will not be made by human hands. It will be a place where God lives with His people eternally, and it will be a place of “no more”—no more pain, sorrow, and sickness.

We don’t know very much about eternity, but we do know that for the Christian, whatever our emotional and physical struggles are now, they will cease then. Life with God will be better by far.

Think of a land of no sorrow,

Think of a land of no fears,

Think of no death and no sickness,

Think of a land of no tears. —Anon.

Heaven’s delights will far outweigh earth’s difficulties.
My Utmost For His Highest:

Leave Room for God

As servants of God, we must learn to make room for Him-to give God “elbow room.” We plan and figure and predict that this or that will happen, but we forget to make room for God to come in as He chooses. Would we be surprised if God came into our meeting or into our preaching in a way we had never expected Him to come? Do not look for God to come in a particular way, but do look for Him. The way to make room for Him is to expect Him to come, but not in a certain way. No matter how well we may know God, the great lesson to learn is that He may break in at any minute. We tend to overlook this element of surprise, yet God never works in any other way. Suddenly—God meets our life “. . . when it pleased God . . . .”

Keep your life so constantly in touch with God that His surprising power can break through at any point. Live in a constant state of expectancy, and leave room for God to come in as He decides.
