Psalm 26

Plea for Justice and Declaration of RighteousnessOf David.

1 Vindicate me, O Lord,

for I have walked in my integrity,

and I have trusted in the Lord without wavering.

2 Prove me, O Lord, and try me;

test my heart and mind.

3 For your steadfast love is before my eyes,

and I walk in faithfulness to you.*

4 I do not sit with the worthless,

nor do I consort with hypocrites;

5 I hate the company of evildoers,

and will not sit with the wicked.

6 I wash my hands in innocence,

and go around your altar, O Lord,

7 singing aloud a song of thanksgiving,

and telling all your wondrous deeds.

8 O Lord, I love the house in which you dwell,

and the place where your glory abides.

9 Do not sweep me away with sinners,

nor my life with the bloodthirsty,

10 those in whose hands are evil devices,

and whose right hands are full of bribes.

11 But as for me, I walk in my integrity;

redeem me, and be gracious to me.

12 My foot stands on level ground;

in the great congregation I will bless the Lord.

Psalm 28

Prayer for Help and Thanksgiving for ItOf David.

1 To you, O Lord, I call;

my rock, do not refuse to hear me,

for if you are silent to me,

I shall be like those who go down to the Pit.

2 Hear the voice of my supplication,

as I cry to you for help,

as I lift up my hands

towards your most holy sanctuary.*

3 Do not drag me away with the wicked,

with those who are workers of evil,

who speak peace with their neighbours,

while mischief is in their hearts.

4 Repay them according to their work,

and according to the evil of their deeds;

repay them according to the work of their hands;

render them their due reward.

5 Because they do not regard the works of the Lord,

or the work of his hands,

he will break them down and build them up no more.

6 Blessed be the Lord,

for he has heard the sound of my pleadings.

7 The Lord is my strength and my shield;

in him my heart trusts;

so I am helped, and my heart exults,

and with my song I give thanks to him.

8 The Lord is the strength of his people;

he is the saving refuge of his anointed.

9 O save your people, and bless your heritage;

be their shepherd, and carry them for ever.

Isaiah 44:9-20

The Absurdity of Idol-Worship9 All who make idols are nothing, and the things they delight in do not profit; their witnesses neither see nor know. And so they will be put to shame. 10Who would fashion a god or cast an image that can do no good? 11Look, all its devotees shall be put to shame; the artisans too are merely human. Let them all assemble, let them stand up; they shall be terrified, they shall all be put to shame.

12 The blacksmith fashions it* and works it over the coals, shaping it with hammers, and forging it with his strong arm; he becomes hungry and his strength fails, he drinks no water and is faint. 13The carpenter stretches a line, marks it out with a stylus, fashions it with planes, and marks it with a compass; he makes it in human form, with human beauty, to be set up in a shrine. 14He cuts down cedars or chooses a holm tree or an oak and lets it grow strong among the trees of the forest. He plants a cedar and the rain nourishes it. 15Then it can be used as fuel. Part of it he takes and warms himself; he kindles a fire and bakes bread. Then he makes a god and worships it, makes it a carved image and bows down before it. 16Half of it he burns in the fire; over this half he roasts meat, eats it, and is satisfied. He also warms himself and says, ‘Ah, I am warm, I can feel the fire!’ 17The rest of it he makes into a god, his idol, bows down to it, and worships it; he prays to it and says, ‘Save me, for you are my god!’

18 They do not know, nor do they comprehend; for their eyes are shut, so that they cannot see, and their minds as well, so that they cannot understand. 19No one considers, nor is there knowledge or discernment to say, ‘Half of it I burned in the fire; I also baked bread on its coals, I roasted meat and have eaten. Now shall I make the rest of it an abomination? Shall I fall down before a block of wood?’ 20He feeds on ashes; a deluded mind has led him astray, and he cannot save himself or say, ‘Is not this thing in my right hand a fraud?’

Ephesians 4:17-32

The Old Life and the New17 Now this I affirm and insist on in the Lord: you must no longer live as the Gentiles live, in the futility of their minds. 18They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of their ignorance and hardness of heart. 19They have lost all sensitivity and have abandoned themselves to licentiousness, greedy to practise every kind of impurity. 20That is not the way you learned Christ! 21For surely you have heard about him and were taught in him, as truth is in Jesus. 22You were taught to put away your former way of life, your old self, corrupt and deluded by its lusts, 23and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, 24and to clothe yourselves with the new self, created according to the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.

Rules for the New Life25 So then, putting away falsehood, let all of us speak the truth to our neighbours, for we are members of one another. 26Be angry but do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, 27and do not make room for the devil. 28Thieves must give up stealing; rather let them labour and work honestly with their own hands, so as to have something to share with the needy. 29Let no evil talk come out of your mouths, but only what is useful for building up,* as there is need, so that your words may give grace to those who hear. 30And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with which you were marked with a seal for the day of redemption. 31Put away from you all bitterness and wrath and anger and wrangling and slander, together with all malice, 32and be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ has forgiven you.*

Evening Office:

Psalm 36

Human Wickedness and Divine GoodnessTo the leader. Of David, the servant of the Lord.

1 Transgression speaks to the wicked

deep in their hearts;

there is no fear of God

before their eyes.

2 For they flatter themselves in their own eyes

that their iniquity cannot be found out and hated.

3 The words of their mouths are mischief and deceit;

they have ceased to act wisely and do good.

4 They plot mischief while on their beds;

they are set on a way that is not good;

they do not reject evil.

5 Your steadfast love, O Lord, extends to the heavens,

your faithfulness to the clouds.

6 Your righteousness is like the mighty mountains,

your judgements are like the great deep;

you save humans and animals alike, O Lord.

7 How precious is your steadfast love, O God!

All people may take refuge in the shadow of your wings.

8 They feast on the abundance of your house,

and you give them drink from the river of your delights.

9 For with you is the fountain of life;

in your light we see light.

10 O continue your steadfast love to those who know you,

and your salvation to the upright of heart!

11 Do not let the foot of the arrogant tread on me,

or the hand of the wicked drive me away.

12 There the evildoers lie prostrate;

they are thrust down, unable to rise.

Psalm 39

Prayer for Wisdom and ForgivenessTo the leader: to Jeduthun. A Psalm of David.

1 I said, ‘I will guard my ways

that I may not sin with my tongue;

I will keep a muzzle on my mouth

as long as the wicked are in my presence.’

2 I was silent and still;

I held my peace to no avail;

my distress grew worse,

3 my heart became hot within me.

While I mused, the fire burned;

then I spoke with my tongue:

4 ‘Lord, let me know my end,

and what is the measure of my days;

let me know how fleeting my life is.

5 You have made my days a few handbreadths,

and my lifetime is as nothing in your sight.

Surely everyone stands as a mere breath.

Selah

6 Surely everyone goes about like a shadow.

Surely for nothing they are in turmoil;

they heap up, and do not know who will gather.

7 ‘And now, O Lord, what do I wait for?

My hope is in you.

8 Deliver me from all my transgressions.

Do not make me the scorn of the fool.

9 I am silent; I do not open my mouth,

for it is you who have done it.

10 Remove your stroke from me;

I am worn down by the blows* of your hand.

11 ‘You chastise mortals

in punishment for sin,

consuming like a moth what is dear to them;

surely everyone is a mere breath.

Selah

12 ‘Hear my prayer, O Lord,

and give ear to my cry;

do not hold your peace at my tears.

For I am your passing guest,

an alien, like all my forebears.

13 Turn your gaze away from me, that I may smile again,

before I depart and am no more.’

Mark 3:19-3519and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.

Jesus and BeelzebulThen he went home; 20and the crowd came together again, so that they could not even eat. 21When his family heard it, they went out to restrain him, for people were saying, ‘He has gone out of his mind.’ 22And the scribes who came down from Jerusalem said, ‘He has Beelzebul, and by the ruler of the demons he casts out demons.’ 23And he called them to him, and spoke to them in parables, ‘How can Satan cast out Satan? 24If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. 25And if a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand. 26And if Satan has risen up against himself and is divided, he cannot stand, but his end has come. 27But no one can enter a strong man’s house and plunder his property without first tying up the strong man; then indeed the house can be plundered.

28 ‘Truly I tell you, people will be forgiven for their sins and whatever blasphemies they utter; 29but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit can never have forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin’— 30for they had said, ‘He has an unclean spirit.’

The True Kindred of Jesus31 Then his mother and his brothers came; and standing outside, they sent to him and called him. 32A crowd was sitting around him; and they said to him, ‘Your mother and your brothers and sisters* are outside, asking for you.’ 33And he replied, ‘Who are my mother and my brothers?’ 34And looking at those who sat around him, he said, ‘Here are my mother and my brothers! 35Whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother.’

Eucharistic Office:

Hebrews 6:10-2010For God is not unjust; he will not overlook your work and the love that you showed for his sake* in serving the saints, as you still do. 11And we want each one of you to show the same diligence, so as to realize the full assurance of hope to the very end, 12so that you may not become sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.

The Certainty of God’s Promise13 When God made a promise to Abraham, because he had no one greater by whom to swear, he swore by himself, 14saying, ‘I will surely bless you and multiply you.’ 15And thus Abraham,* having patiently endured, obtained the promise. 16Human beings, of course, swear by someone greater than themselves, and an oath given as confirmation puts an end to all dispute. 17In the same way, when God desired to show even more clearly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeable character of his purpose, he guaranteed it by an oath, 18so that through two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible that God would prove false, we who have taken refuge might be strongly encouraged to seize the hope set before us. 19We have this hope, a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters the inner shrine behind the curtain, 20where Jesus, a forerunner on our behalf, has entered, having become a high priest for ever according to the order of Melchizedek.

Psalm 111

Praise for God’s Wonderful Works

1 Praise the Lord!

I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart,

in the company of the upright, in the congregation.

2 Great are the works of the Lord,

studied by all who delight in them.

3 Full of honour and majesty is his work,

and his righteousness endures for ever.

4 He has gained renown by his wonderful deeds;

the Lord is gracious and merciful.

5 He provides food for those who fear him;

he is ever mindful of his covenant.

6 He has shown his people the power of his works,

in giving them the heritage of the nations.

7 The works of his hands are faithful and just;

all his precepts are trustworthy.

8 They are established for ever and ever,

to be performed with faithfulness and uprightness.

9 He sent redemption to his people;

he has commanded his covenant for ever.

Holy and awesome is his name.

10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom;

all those who practise it* have a good understanding.

His praise endures for ever.

Mark 2:23-28

Pronouncement about the Sabbath23 One sabbath he was going through the cornfields; and as they made their way his disciples began to pluck heads of grain. 24The Pharisees said to him, ‘Look, why are they doing what is not lawful on the sabbath?’ 25And he said to them, ‘Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry and in need of food? 26He entered the house of God, when Abiathar was high priest, and ate the bread of the Presence, which it is not lawful for any but the priests to eat, and he gave some to his companions.’ 27Then he said to them, ‘The sabbath was made for humankind, and not humankind for the sabbath; 28so the Son of Man is lord even of the sabbath.’

CONFESSION OF PETER THE APOSTLE

(18 JAN NT)

Icon of St. PeterOn 18 January we remember how the Apostle Peter was led by God's grace to acknowledge Jesus as the Christ (Matthew 16:13-20), and we join with Peter, and with all Christians everywhere, in hailing Jesus as our Lord, God, and Savior.

by James Kiefer

Psalm 23

The Divine ShepherdA Psalm of David.

1 The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.

2 He makes me lie down in green pastures;

he leads me beside still waters;*

3 he restores my soul.*

He leads me in right paths*

for his name’s sake.

4 Even though I walk through the darkest valley,*

I fear no evil;

for you are with me;

your rod and your staff—

they comfort me.

5 You prepare a table before me

in the presence of my enemies;

you anoint my head with oil;

my cup overflows.

6 Surely* goodness and mercy* shall follow me

all the days of my life,

and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord

my whole life long.*

Acts 4:8-138Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, ‘Rulers of the people and elders, 9if we are questioned today because of a good deed done to someone who was sick and are asked how this man has been healed, 10let it be known to all of you, and to all the people of Israel, that this man is standing before you in good health by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth,* whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead. 11This Jesus* is

“the stone that was rejected by you, the builders;

it has become the cornerstone.”*

12There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among mortals by which we must be saved.’

13 Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John and realized that they were uneducated and ordinary men, they were amazed and recognized them as companions of Jesus.

1 Peter 5:1-4

Tending the Flock of God5Now as an elder myself and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, as well as one who shares in the glory to be revealed, I exhort the elders among you 2to tend the flock of God that is in your charge, exercising the oversight,* not under compulsion but willingly, as God would have you do it*—not for sordid gain but eagerly. 3Do not lord it over those in your charge, but be examples to the flock. 4And when the chief shepherd appears, you will win the crown of glory that never fades away.

Matthew 16:13-19

Peter’s Declaration about Jesus13 Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, ‘Who do people say that the Son of Man is?’ 14And they said, ‘Some say John the Baptist, but others Elijah, and still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.’ 15He said to them, ‘But who do you say that I am?’ 16Simon Peter answered, ‘You are the Messiah,* the Son of the living God.’ 17And Jesus answered him, ‘Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father in heaven. 18And I tell you, you are Peter,* and on this rock* I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it. 19I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.’

Preface of Apostles

PRAYER (traditional language)

Almighty Father, who didst inspire Simon Peter, first among the apostles, to confess Jesus as Messiah and Son of the Living God: Keep thy Church steadfast upon the rock of this faith, that in unity and peace we may proclaim the one truth and follow the one Lord, our Savior Jesus Christ; who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.

Psalm 66

Praise for God’s Goodness to IsraelTo the leader. A Song. A Psalm.

1 Make a joyful noise to God, all the earth;

2 sing the glory of his name;

give to him glorious praise.

3 Say to God, ‘How awesome are your deeds!

Because of your great power, your enemies cringe before you.

4 All the earth worships you;

they sing praises to you,

sing praises to your name.’

Selah

5 Come and see what God has done:

he is awesome in his deeds among mortals.

6 He turned the sea into dry land;

they passed through the river on foot.

There we rejoiced in him,

7 who rules by his might for ever,

whose eyes keep watch on the nations—

let the rebellious not exalt themselves.

Selah

8 Bless our God, O peoples,

let the sound of his praise be heard,

9 who has kept us among the living,

and has not let our feet slip.

10 For you, O God, have tested us;

you have tried us as silver is tried.

11 You brought us into the net;

you laid burdens on our backs;

12 you let people ride over our heads;

we went through fire and through water;

yet you have brought us out to a spacious place.*

13 I will come into your house with burnt-offerings;

I will pay you my vows,

14 those that my lips uttered

and my mouth promised when I was in trouble.

15 I will offer to you burnt-offerings of fatlings,

with the smoke of the sacrifice of rams;

I will make an offering of bulls and goats.

Selah

16 Come and hear, all you who fear God,

and I will tell what he has done for me.

17 I cried aloud to him,

and he was extolled with my tongue.

18 If I had cherished iniquity in my heart,

the Lord would not have listened.

19 But truly God has listened;

he has given heed to the words of my prayer.

20 Blessed be God,

because he has not rejected my prayer

or removed his steadfast love from me.

Psalm 67

The Nations Called to Praise GodTo the leader: with stringed instruments. A Psalm. A Song.

1 May God be gracious to us and bless us

and make his face to shine upon us,

Selah

2 that your way may be known upon earth,

your saving power among all nations.

3 Let the peoples praise you, O God;

let all the peoples praise you.

4 Let the nations be glad and sing for joy,

for you judge the peoples with equity

and guide the nations upon earth.

Selah

5 Let the peoples praise you, O God;

let all the peoples praise you.

6 The earth has yielded its increase;

God, our God, has blessed us.

7 May God continue to bless us;

let all the ends of the earth revere him.

Isaiah 45:18-25

18 For thus says the Lord,

who created the heavens

(he is God!),

who formed the earth and made it

(he established it;

he did not create it a chaos,

he formed it to be inhabited!):

I am the Lord, and there is no other.

19 I did not speak in secret,

in a land of darkness;

I did not say to the offspring of Jacob,

‘Seek me in chaos.’

I the Lord speak the truth,

I declare what is right.

Idols Cannot Save Babylon

20 Assemble yourselves and come together,

draw near, you survivors of the nations!

They have no knowledge—

those who carry about their wooden idols,

and keep on praying to a god

that cannot save.

21 Declare and present your case;

let them take counsel together!

Who told this long ago?

Who declared it of old?

Was it not I, the Lord?

There is no other god besides me,

a righteous God and a Saviour;

there is no one besides me.

22 Turn to me and be saved,

all the ends of the earth!

For I am God, and there is no other.

23 By myself I have sworn,

from my mouth has gone forth in righteousness

a word that shall not return:

‘To me every knee shall bow,

every tongue shall swear.’

24 Only in the Lord, it shall be said of me,

are righteousness and strength;

all who were incensed against him

shall come to him and be ashamed.

25 In the Lord all the offspring of Israel

shall triumph and glory.

Philippians 3:4-114even though I, too, have reason for confidence in the flesh.

If anyone else has reason to be confident in the flesh, I have more: 5circumcised on the eighth day, a member of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew born of Hebrews; as to the law, a Pharisee; 6as to zeal, a persecutor of the church; as to righteousness under the law, blameless.

7 Yet whatever gains I had, these I have come to regard as loss because of Christ. 8More than that, I regard everything as loss because of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things, and I regard them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ 9and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but one that comes through faith in Christ,* the righteousness from God based on faith. 10I want to know Christ* and the power of his resurrection and the sharing of his sufferings by becoming like him in his death, 11if somehow I may attain the resurrection from the dead.

Evening:

Psalm 119:89-112

89 The Lord exists for ever;

your word is firmly fixed in heaven.

90 Your faithfulness endures to all generations;

you have established the earth, and it stands fast.

91 By your appointment they stand today,

for all things are your servants.

92 If your law had not been my delight,

I would have perished in my misery.

93 I will never forget your precepts,

for by them you have given me life.

94 I am yours; save me,

for I have sought your precepts.

95 The wicked lie in wait to destroy me,

but I consider your decrees.

96 I have seen a limit to all perfection,

but your commandment is exceedingly broad.

97 Oh, how I love your law!

It is my meditation all day long.

98 Your commandment makes me wiser than my enemies,

for it is always with me.

99 I have more understanding than all my teachers,

for your decrees are my meditation.

100 I understand more than the aged,

for I keep your precepts.

101 I hold back my feet from every evil way,

in order to keep your word.

102 I do not turn away from your ordinances,

for you have taught me.

103 How sweet are your words to my taste,

sweeter than honey to my mouth!

104 Through your precepts I get understanding;

therefore I hate every false way.

105 Your word is a lamp to my feet

and a light to my path.

106 I have sworn an oath and confirmed it,

to observe your righteous ordinances.

107 I am severely afflicted;

give me life, O Lord, according to your word.

108 Accept my offerings of praise, O Lord,

and teach me your ordinances.

109 I hold my life in my hand continually,

but I do not forget your law.

110 The wicked have laid a snare for me,

but I do not stray from your precepts.

111 Your decrees are my heritage for ever;

they are the joy of my heart.

112 I incline my heart to perform your statutes

for ever, to the end.

Ezekiel 34:11-16

God the True Shepherd11 For thus says the Lord God: I myself will search for my sheep, and will seek them out. 12As shepherds seek out their flocks when they are among their scattered sheep, so I will seek out my sheep. I will rescue them from all the places to which they have been scattered on a day of clouds and thick darkness. 13I will bring them out from the peoples and gather them from the countries, and will bring them into their own land; and I will feed them on the mountains of Israel, by the watercourses, and in all the inhabited parts of the land. 14I will feed them with good pasture, and the mountain heights of Israel shall be their pasture; there they shall lie down in good grazing land, and they shall feed on rich pasture on the mountains of Israel. 15I myself will be the shepherd of my sheep, and I will make them lie down, says the Lord God. 16I will seek the lost, and I will bring back the strayed, and I will bind up the injured, and I will strengthen the weak, but the fat and the strong I will destroy. I will feed them with justice.

John 21:15-22

Jesus and Peter15 When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, ‘Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?’ He said to him, ‘Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Feed my lambs.’ 16A second time he said to him, ‘Simon son of John, do you love me?’ He said to him, ‘Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Tend my sheep.’ 17He said to him the third time, ‘Simon son of John, do you love me?’ Peter felt hurt because he said to him the third time, ‘Do you love me?’ And he said to him, ‘Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Feed my sheep. 18Very truly, I tell you, when you were younger, you used to fasten your own belt and to go wherever you wished. But when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will fasten a belt around you and take you where you do not wish to go.’ 19(He said this to indicate the kind of death by which he would glorify God.) After this he said to him, ‘Follow me.’

Jesus and the Beloved Disciple20 Peter turned and saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following them; he was the one who had reclined next to Jesus at the supper and had said, ‘Lord, who is it that is going to betray you?’ 21When Peter saw him, he said to Jesus, ‘Lord, what about him?’ 22Jesus said to him, ‘If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you? Follow me!’

Today's Meditation

TUESDAY, January 18 The Confession of Saint Peter

Matthew 16:13-19. He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”

This gospel reminds me of one of those moments on a long journey when you pause and look at how far you have come, then look ahead to the road still before you. Stopping midway, you reassess.

Jesus’ journey through the countryside has led to much talk. So Jesus asks his followers to sum up the trip so far: who do people say that he is? The familiar answers come: John the Baptist come back to life; Elijah, returned among us; some other prophet.

The question may have been directed at good-hearted, impetuous Peter, but Jesus is also asking me. Who do I say that he is? Into what parts of my heart will I invite him? What of me will I try to hide, pretend to be other than I am? How will I follow him? At a safe distance, watching to see how it will turn out? Or will I take up my cross, as he invites me, and follow him? Will I hold back, or plunge deliriously into deep waters? Is my baptism a polite social ritual, an excuse to get the family together, or is it new birth? Who is this Christ for me, who has marked me as his own forever? (1999)
