Jacob Steals Esau's Blessing
KEY VERSES: "And he said, Is not he rightly named Jacob? for he hath supplanted me these two times: he took away my birthright; and, behold, now he hath taken away my blessing. And he said, Hast thou not reserved a blessing for me?" Genesis 27:36.
Esau and Jacob were twin sons of Isaac and Rebekah. Since Esau was born first, the birthright and the blessing belonged to him. The birthright and the blessing carried many privileges and responsibilities. Jacob was jealous that Esau would get the blessing so he and his mother conspired to trick Isaac in bestowing the blessing on Jacob. Isaac's health was failing and his eyesight was poor. Jacob made his father believe that he was Esau and had Isaac bestow the blessing on him.
This deception is troubling on many fronts. Why were Isaac and Rebekah playing favorites between their children? Why was there such a rivalry between the twin sons? Why was Rebekah so willing to deceive her husband? When there is dysfunction in the family, the family unit falls apart.
How can a family avoid such dysfunction? The family must be dedicated to worshiping and serving God. The husband and wife must love one another and show that love in action. The children must honor their father and mother. The children should be in subjection to their parents. When individuals follow God, the family is strengthened. When families follow God, churches are strengthened. When churches are strengthened, countries are strengthened. The good of society depends in a large part on the unity of the family.
JUST A THOUGHT: How strong is your family?
