Submit — Resist — Deny

KEY VERSE: "Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you," James 4:7.

In science class we were taught that nature hates a vacuum. Where a vacuum exists, the forces of nature rush in to fill it. To illustrate, place your finger over one end of a straw and suck the air out of the other end. The straw collapses. Remove your finger from the other end of the straw and air automatically rushes back in.

The same principle can be applied to life. The natural tendency of mankind is to sin. To avoid sinful behavior, he must resist the temptation to sin. If all he does is attempt to resist the temptation to sin, the old nature will soon return. What is needed is to fill the vacuum that sinful behavior has left behind. It needs to be filled with obedience to God. The more a person obeys God, the less likely he will be to succumb to the temptations of the flesh.

A person should submit to the will of God. God will never lead him to sin. He should resist the devil's invitation to sin. He should deny the passion of the flesh to sin. Do not rely only on the desire not to sin because the temptation to sin will become too great to resist. Keep yourself busy serving God so that you have no time to sin. Do not give temptation a second thought.

JUST A THOUGHT: The more godly behavior you have, the less you will be tempted to sin.
