Leonardo da Vinci

Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci (April 15, 1452 – May 2, 1519) was an Italian polymath: painter, sculptor, architect, musician, scientist, mathematician, engineer, inventor, anatomist, geologist, cartographer, botanist and writer. Leonardo has often been described as the archetype of the Renaissance Man, a man of "unquenchable curiosity" and "feverishly inventive imagination". He is widely considered to be one of the greatest painters of all time and perhaps the most diversely talented person ever to have lived. According to art historian Helen Gardner, the scope and depth of his interests were without precedent and "his mind and personality seem to us superhuman, the man himself mysterious and remote." Marco Rosci points out, however, that while there is much speculation about Leonardo, his vision of the world is essentially logical rather than mysterious, and that the empirical methods he employed were unusual for his time.

Born the illegitimate son of a notary, Piero da Vinci, and a peasant woman, Caterina, at Vinci in the region of Florence, Leonardo was educated in the studio of the renowned Florentine painter, Verrocchio. Much of his earlier working life was spent in the service of Ludovico il Moro in Milan. He later worked in Rome, Bologna and Venice and spent his last years in France, at the home awarded him by Francis I.

Leonardo was and is renowned primarily as a painter. Among his works, the Mona Lisa is most famous and most parodied portrait and The Last Supper the most reproduced religious painting of all time, with their fame approached only by Michelangelo's Creation of Adam. Leonardo's drawing of the Vitruvian Man is also regarded as a cultural icon, being reproduced on everything from the euro to text books to t-shirts. Perhaps fifteen of his paintings survive, the small number due to his constant, and frequently disastrous, experimentation with new techniques, and his chronic procrastination. Nevertheless, these few works, together with his notebooks, which contain drawings, scientific diagrams, and his thoughts on the nature of painting, compose a contribution to later generations of artists only rivalled by that of his contemporary, Michelangelo.

Charlie Chaplin

Sir Charles Spencer "Charlie" Chaplin (April 16,1889 – December 25, 1977) was an English comic actor, film director and composer best-known for his work during the silent film era. He became one of the most famous film stars in the world before the end of the First World War. Chaplin used mime, slapstick and other visual comedy routines, and continued well into the era of the talkies, though his films decreased in frequency from the end of the 1920s. His most famous role was that of The Tramp, which he first played in the Keystone comedy Kid Auto Races at Venice in 1914. From the April 1914 one-reeler Twenty Minutes of Love onwards he was writing and directing most of his films, by 1916 he was also producing them, and from 1918 he was even composing the music for them. With Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks and D. W. Griffith, he co-founded United Artists in 1919.

Chaplin was one of the most creative and influential personalities of the silent-film era. He was influenced by his predecessor, the French silent film comedian Max Linder, to whom he dedicated one of his films. His working life in entertainment spanned over 75 years, from the Victorian stage and the Music Hall in the United Kingdom as a child performer, until close to his death at the age of 88. His high-profile public and private life encompassed both adulation and controversy. Chaplin's identification with the left ultimately forced him to resettle in Europe during the McCarthy era in the early 1950s.

In 1999, the American Film Institute ranked Chaplin the 10th greatest male screen legend of all time. In 2008, Martin Sieff, in a review of the book Chaplin: A Life, wrote: "Chaplin was not just 'big," he was gigantic. In 1915, he burst onto a war-torn world bringing it the gift of comedy, laughter and relief while it was tearing itself apart through World War I. Over the next 25 years, through the Great Depression and the rise of Adolf Hitler, he stayed on the job. ... It is doubtful any individual has ever given more entertainment, pleasure and relief to so many human beings when they needed it the most." George Bernard Shaw called Chaplin "the only genius to come out of the movie industry."

Joan Miró

Joan Miró i Ferrà (April 20, 1893 – December 25, 1983 was a Spanish Catalan painter, sculptor, and ceramicist born in Barcelona.

Earning international acclaim, his work has been interpreted as Surrealism, a sandbox for the subconscious mind, a re-creation of the childlike, and a manifestation of Catalan pride. In numerous interviews dating from the 1930s onwards, Miró expressed contempt for conventional painting methods as a way of supporting bourgeois society, and famously declared an "assassination of painting" in favour of upsetting the visual elements of established painting.

What surprises you so much about humanity?

Man.

Because he sacrifices his health in order to make money.

Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health.

And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present;

the result being that he does not live in the present or the future;

he lives as if he is never going to die, and then dies having never really lived.

“Samsara literally means “wandering-on.” Many people think of it as the Buddhist name for the place where we currently live. But in the early Buddhist texts, it’s the answer, not to the question, “Where are we?” but to the question, “What are we doing?” Instead of a place, it’s a process: the tendency to keep creating worlds and then moving into them. As one world falls apart, you create another one and go there. At the same time, you bump into other people who are creating their own worlds, too.

The process can sometimes be enjoyable. In fact, it would be perfectly innocuous if it didn’t entail so much suffering. The worlds we create keep caving in and killing us. Moving into a new world requires effort: not only the pains and risks of taking birth, but also the hard knocks - mental and physical - that come from going through childhood into adulthood, over and over again.”

“Do not brace yourself against suffering. Try to close your eyes and surrender yourself, as if to a great loving energy. An Autumn Evening

In the brightness of autumn evenings

there is a touching, mysterious charm:

an ominous glitter, motley trees,

a light, languorous rustle of scarlet leaves,

a hazy, quiet blueness

across the sadly orphaned world

and, presaging gathering storms,

at times a gusty snap of wind.

Loss. Exhaustion. And on it all

there is that gentle smile of fading

which, in a thinking creature, we should call

the divine shame of suffering.

(Dutch) Reformed Church In America Daily Prayer Request For Friday, 15 April

From The Reformed Church In America;

April 15 Prayer Request

Pray for faithful consistories that challenge their congregations with this question: "What needs to happen in your life personally in order for you to place participation in God's mission at the center of your life and ministry?"

Today's Scripture: Matthew 26:57–27:23

Matthew 26:57–27:23

Jesus before the High Priest

57 Those who had arrested Jesus took him to Caiaphas the high priest, in whose house the scribes and the elders had gathered. 58But Peter was following him at a distance, as far as the courtyard of the high priest; and going inside, he sat with the guards in order to see how this would end. 59Now the chief priests and the whole council were looking for false testimony against Jesus so that they might put him to death, 60but they found none, though many false witnesses came forward. At last two came forward 61and said, ‘This fellow said, “I am able to destroy the temple of God and to build it in three days.” ’ 62The high priest stood up and said, ‘Have you no answer? What is it that they testify against you?’ 63But Jesus was silent. Then the high priest said to him, ‘I put you under oath before the living God, tell us if you are the Messiah, the Son of God.’ 64Jesus said to him, ‘You have said so. But I tell you,

From now on you will see the Son of Man

seated at the right hand of Power

and coming on the clouds of heaven.’

65Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, ‘He has blasphemed! Why do we still need witnesses? You have now heard his blasphemy. 66What is your verdict?’ They answered, ‘He deserves death.’ 67Then they spat in his face and struck him; and some slapped him, 68saying, ‘Prophesy to us, you Messiah! Who is it that struck you?’

Peter’s Denial of Jesus

69 Now Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard. A servant-girl came to him and said, ‘You also were with Jesus the Galilean.’ 70But he denied it before all of them, saying, ‘I do not know what you are talking about.’ 71When he went out to the porch, another servant-girl saw him, and she said to the bystanders, ‘This man was with Jesus of Nazareth.’ 72Again he denied it with an oath, ‘I do not know the man.’ 73After a little while the bystanders came up and said to Peter, ‘Certainly you are also one of them, for your accent betrays you.’ 74Then he began to curse, and he swore an oath, ‘I do not know the man!’ At that moment the cock crowed. 75Then Peter remembered what Jesus had said: ‘Before the cock crows, you will deny me three times.’ And he went out and wept bitterly.

Jesus Brought before Pilate

27When morning came, all the chief priests and the elders of the people conferred together against Jesus in order to bring about his death. 2They bound him, led him away, and handed him over to Pilate the governor.

The Suicide of Judas

3 When Judas, his betrayer, saw that Jesus was condemned, he repented and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders. 4He said, ‘I have sinned by betraying innocent blood.’ But they said, ‘What is that to us? See to it yourself.’ 5Throwing down the pieces of silver in the temple, he departed; and he went and hanged himself. 6But the chief priests, taking the pieces of silver, said, ‘It is not lawful to put them into the treasury, since they are blood money.’ 7After conferring together, they used them to buy the potter’s field as a place to bury foreigners. 8For this reason that field has been called the Field of Blood to this day. 9Then was fulfilled what had been spoken through the prophet Jeremiah, ‘And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of the one on whom a price had been set, on whom some of the people of Israel had set a price, 10and they gave them for the potter’s field, as the Lord commanded me.’

Pilate Questions Jesus

11 Now Jesus stood before the governor; and the governor asked him, ‘Are you the King of the Jews?’ Jesus said, ‘You say so.’ 12But when he was accused by the chief priests and elders, he did not answer. 13Then Pilate said to him, ‘Do you not hear how many accusations they make against you?’ 14But he gave him no answer, not even to a single charge, so that the governor was greatly amazed.

Barabbas or Jesus?

15 Now at the festival the governor was accustomed to release a prisoner for the crowd, anyone whom they wanted. 16At that time they had a notorious prisoner, called Jesus Barabbas. 17So after they had gathered, Pilate said to them, ‘Whom do you want me to release for you, Jesus Barabbas or Jesus who is called the Messiah?’ 18For he realized that it was out of jealousy that they had handed him over. 19While he was sitting on the judgement seat, his wife sent word to him, ‘Have nothing to do with that innocent man, for today I have suffered a great deal because of a dream about him.’ 20Now the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowds to ask for Barabbas and to have Jesus killed. 21The governor again said to them, ‘Which of the two do you want me to release for you?’ And they said, ‘Barabbas.’ 22Pilate said to them, ‘Then what should I do with Jesus who is called the Messiah?’ All of them said, ‘Let him be crucified!’ 23Then he asked, ‘Why, what evil has he done?’ But they shouted all the more, ‘Let him be crucified!’

Heiligen des Tages : Hl. Damian Deveuster

Hl. Damian Deveuster

Die anderen Heiligen des Tages...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hl. Damian Deveuster

Priester, Mönch

* 3. Januar 1840 in Tremelo in Belgien

Zeigt ihn an!

Psalm 18(17),2-3.4.5-6.7.

Er sprach:] Ich will dich rühmen, Herr, meine Stärke,

"Rejoice with Jerusalem, and be glad for her, all you who love her;

rejoice with her in joy, all you who mourn over her; that you may suck

and be satisfied with her consoling breasts; that you may drink

deeply with delight from the abundance of her glory." For thus says the

LORD: "Behold, I will extend prosperity to her like a river, and the

wealth of the nations like an overflowing stream; and you shall suck,

you shall be carried upon her hip, and dandled upon her knees. As

one whom his mother comforts, so I will comfort you; you shall be

comforted in Jerusalem. You shall see, and your heart shall rejoice; your

bones shall flourish like the grass; and it shall be known that the

hand of the LORD is with his servants, and his indignation is against

his enemies. "For behold, the LORD will come in fire, and his

chariots like the stormwind, to render his anger in fury, and his rebuke

with flames of fire. For by fire will the LORD execute judgment, and

by his sword, upon all flesh; and those slain by the LORD shall be

many. "Those who sanctify and purify themselves to go into the

gardens, following one in the midst, eating swine's flesh and the

abomination and mice, shall come to an end together, says the LORD. "For I

know their works and their thoughts, and I am coming to gather all

nations and tongues; and they shall come and shall see my glory, and I

will set a sign among them. And from them I will send survivors to the

nations, to Tarshish, Put, and Lud, who draw the bow, to Tubal and Javan,

to the coastlands afar off, that have not heard my fame or seen my

glory; and they shall declare my glory among the nations. And they

shall bring all your brethren from all the nations as an offering to

the LORD, upon horses, and in chariots, and in litters, and upon

mules, and upon dromedaries, to my holy mountain Jerusalem, says the

LORD, just as the Israelites bring their cereal offering in a clean

vessel to the house of the LORD. And some of them also I will take for

priests and for Levites, says the LORD. "For as the new heavens and the

new earth which I will make shall remain before me, says the LORD; so

shall your descendants and your name remain. From new moon to new

moon, and from sabbath to sabbath, all flesh shall come to worship

before me, says the LORD. "And they shall go forth and look on the dead

bodies of the men that have rebelled against me; for their worm shall

not die, their fire shall not be quenched, and they shall be an

abhorrence to all flesh."

Old Testament Reading

The reading is from Genesis 49:33-50:26

When Jacob finished charging his sons, he drew up his feet into the

bed, and breathed his last, and was gathered to his people. Then

Joseph fell on his father's face, and wept over him, and kissed him.

And Joseph commanded his servants the physicians to embalm his

father. So the physicians embalmed Israel; forty days were required for

it, for so many are required for embalming. And the Egyptians wept

for him seventy days.

And when the days of weeping for him were past, Joseph spoke to the

household of Pharaoh, saying, "If now I have found favor in your eyes,

speak, I pray you, in the ears of Pharaoh, saying, My father made me

swear, saying, 'I am about to die: in my tomb which I hewed out for

myself in the land of Canaan, there shall you bury me.' Now therefore

let me go up, I pray you, and bury my father; then I will return."

And Pharaoh answered, "Go up, and bury your father, as he made you

swear." So Joseph went up to bury his father; and with him went up all

the servants of Pharaoh, the elders of his household, and all the

elders of the land of Egypt, as well as all the household of Joseph, his

brothers, and his father's household; only their children, their flocks,

and their herds were left in the land of Goshen. And there went up

with him both chariots and horsemen; it was a very great company.

When they came to the threshing floor of Atad, which is beyond the

Jordan, they lamented there with a very great and sorrowful lamentation;

and he made a mourning for his father seven days. When the

inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, saw the mourning on the threshing

floor of Atad, they said, "This is a grievous mourning to the

Egyptians." Therefore the place was named Abelmizraim; it is beyond the

Jordan. Thus his sons did for him as he had commanded them; for his sons

carried him to the land of Canaan, and buried him in the cave of the

field at Machpelah, to the east of Mamre, which Abraham bought with the

field from Ephron the Hittite, to possess as a burying place. After he

had buried his father, Joseph returned to Egypt with his brothers and

all who had gone up with him to bury his father. When Joseph's

brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, "It may be that Joseph

will hate us and pay us back for all the evil which we did to him."

So they sent a message to Joseph, saying, "Your father gave this

command before he died, 'Say to Joseph, Forgive, I pray you, the

transgression of your brothers and their sin, because they did evil to you.'

And now, we pray you, forgive the transgression of the servants of

the God of your father." Joseph wept when they spoke to him. His

brothers also came and fell down before him, and said, "Behold, we are

your servants." But Joseph said to them, "Fear not, for am I in the

place of God? As for you, you meant evil against me; but God meant it

for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as

they are today. So do not fear; I will provide for you and your

little ones." Thus he reassured them and comforted them.

So Joseph dwelt in Egypt, he and his father's house; and Joseph

lived a hundred and ten years. And Joseph saw Ephraim's children of

the third generation; the children also of Machir the son of Manasseh

were born upon Joseph's knees. And Joseph said to his brothers, "I am

about to die; but God will visit you, and bring you up out of this land

to the land which he swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob."

Then Joseph took an oath of the sons of Israel, saying, "God will

visit you, and you shall carry up my bones from here." So Joseph died,

being a hundred and ten years old; and they embalmed him, and he was

put in a coffin in Egypt.

Old Testament Reading

The reading is from Proverbs 31:8-31

Open your mouth for the dumb, for the rights of all who are left

desolate. Open your mouth, judge righteously, maintain the rights of the

poor and needy. A good wife who can find? She is far more precious

than jewels. The heart of her husband trusts in her, and he will have

no lack of gain. She does him good, and not harm, all the days of

her life. She seeks wool and flax, and works with willing hands.

She is like the ships of the merchant, she brings her food from afar.

She rises while it is yet night and provides food for her

household and tasks for her maidens. She considers a field and buys it;

with the fruit of her hands she plants a vineyard. She girds her

loins with strength and makes her arms strong. She perceives that her

merchandise is profitable. Her lamp does not go out at night. She puts her

hands to the distaff, and her hands hold the spindle. She opens her

hand to the poor, and reaches out her hands to the needy. She is not

afraid of snow for her household, for all her household are clothed in

scarlet. She makes herself coverings; her clothing is fine linen and

purple. Her husband is known in the gates, when he sits among the elders

of the land. She makes linen garments and sells them; she delivers

girdles to the merchant. Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she

laughs at the time to come. She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the

teaching of kindness is on her tongue. She looks well to the ways of her

household, and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children rise up and

call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: "Many women

have done excellently, but you surpass them all." Charm is deceitful,

and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised.

Give her of the fruit of her hands, and let her works praise her in

the gates.

Crescens the Martyr

Reading from the Synaxarion:

This Martyr was from Myra of Lycia, born of an illustrious family. Of

his own accord he went amidst the idolaters and admonished them to

leave off their futile religion and worship the only true God, Who is

worshipped by the Christians; for this he was arrested. When asked by the

ruler what his name and lineage were, the Saint would answer only that

he was a Christian; counseled to offer sacrifice to the idols, he

refused. For this, he was hung up and beaten, was scraped, and then was

cast into fire, in which he gave up his holy soul into the hands of

God, though not even the hair of his head was harmed by the flames.

Apolytikion in the Fourth Tone

Thy Martyr, O Lord, in his courageous contest for Thee received the

prize of the crowns of incorruption and life from Thee, our immortal

God. For since he possessed Thy strength, he cast down the tyrants

and wholly destroyed the demons' strengthless presumption. O Christ

God, by his prayers, save our souls, since Thou art merciful.

Today's Scripture: Matthew 26:14-56

Matthew 26:14-56

Judas Agrees to Betray Jesus

14 Then one of the twelve, who was called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests 15and said, ‘What will you give me if I betray him to you?’ They paid him thirty pieces of silver. 16And from that moment he began to look for an opportunity to betray him.

The Passover with the Disciples

17 On the first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying, ‘Where do you want us to make the preparations for you to eat the Passover?’ 18He said, ‘Go into the city to a certain man, and say to him, “The Teacher says, My time is near; I will keep the Passover at your house with my disciples.” ’ 19So the disciples did as Jesus had directed them, and they prepared the Passover meal.

20 When it was evening, he took his place with the twelve; 21and while they were eating, he said, ‘Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me.’ 22And they became greatly distressed and began to say to him one after another, ‘Surely not I, Lord?’ 23He answered, ‘The one who has dipped his hand into the bowl with me will betray me. 24The Son of Man goes as it is written of him, but woe to that one by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for that one not to have been born.’ 25Judas, who betrayed him, said, ‘Surely not I, Rabbi?’ He replied, ‘You have said so.’

The Institution of the Lord’s Supper

26 While they were eating, Jesus took a loaf of bread, and after blessing it he broke it, gave it to the disciples, and said, ‘Take, eat; this is my body.’ 27Then he took a cup, and after giving thanks he gave it to them, saying, ‘Drink from it, all of you; 28for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. 29I tell you, I will never again drink of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.’

30 When they had sung the hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

Peter’s Denial Foretold

31 Then Jesus said to them, ‘You will all become deserters because of me this night; for it is written,

“I will strike the shepherd,

and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.”

32But after I am raised up, I will go ahead of you to Galilee.’ 33Peter said to him, ‘Though all become deserters because of you, I will never desert you.’ 34Jesus said to him, ‘Truly I tell you, this very night, before the cock crows, you will deny me three times.’ 35Peter said to him, ‘Even though I must die with you, I will not deny you.’ And so said all the disciples.

Jesus Prays in Gethsemane

36 Then Jesus went with them to a place called Gethsemane; and he said to his disciples, ‘Sit here while I go over there and pray.’ 37He took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be grieved and agitated. 38Then he said to them, ‘I am deeply grieved, even to death; remain here, and stay awake with me.’ 39And going a little farther, he threw himself on the ground and prayed, ‘My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me; yet not what I want but what you want.’ 40Then he came to the disciples and found them sleeping; and he said to Peter, ‘So, could you not stay awake with me one hour? 41Stay awake and pray that you may not come into the time of trial; the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.’ 42Again he went away for the second time and prayed, ‘My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, your will be done.’ 43Again he came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy. 44So leaving them again, he went away and prayed for the third time, saying the same words. 45Then he came to the disciples and said to them, ‘Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? See, the hour is at hand, and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 46Get up, let us be going. See, my betrayer is at hand.’

The Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus

47 While he was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, arrived; with him was a large crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the elders of the people. 48Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, ‘The one I will kiss is the man; arrest him.’ 49At once he came up to Jesus and said, ‘Greetings, Rabbi!’ and kissed him. 50Jesus said to him, ‘Friend, do what you are here to do.’ Then they came and laid hands on Jesus and arrested him. 51Suddenly, one of those with Jesus put his hand on his sword, drew it, and struck the slave of the high priest, cutting off his ear. 52Then Jesus said to him, ‘Put your sword back into its place; for all who take the sword will perish by the sword. 53Do you think that I cannot appeal to my Father, and he will at once send me more than twelve legions of angels? 54But how then would the scriptures be fulfilled, which say it must happen in this way?’ 55At that hour Jesus said to the crowds, ‘Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest me as though I were a bandit? Day after day I sat in the temple teaching, and you did not arrest me. 56But all this has taken place, so that the scriptures of the prophets may be fulfilled.’ Then all the disciples deserted him and fled.

Die anderen Heiligen des Tages...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hl. Lidwina

Mystikerin

Hl. Bernhard von Tiron

Einsiedler, Abt in Poitiers, Klostergründer

* um 1046 in Abbéville im Ponthieu in Frankreich

† 14. (oder 25. ?)

Feasts and Saints celebrated today:

Aristarchos, Pudens, Trophimos the Apostles of the 70

Old Testament Reading

The reading is from Isaiah 65:8-16

Thus says the LORD: "As the wine is found in the cluster, and they

say, 'Do not destroy it, for there is a blessing in it,' so I will do

for my servants' sake, and not destroy them all. I will bring forth

descendants from Jacob, and from Judah inheritors of my mountains; my chosen

shall inherit it, and my servants shall dwell there. Sharon shall

become a pasture for flocks, and the Valley of Achor a place for herds

to lie down, for my people who have sought me. But you who forsake

the LORD, who forget my holy mountain, who set a table for Fortune

and fill cups of mixed wine for Destiny; I will destine you to the

sword, and all of you shall bow down to the slaughter; because, when I

called, you did not answer, when I spoke, you did not listen, but you did

what was evil in my eyes, and chose what I did not delight in."

Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: "Behold, my servants shall eat, but you

shall be hungry; behold, my servants shall drink, but you shall be

thirsty; behold, my servants shall rejoice, but you shall be put to shame;

behold, my servants shall sing for gladness of heart, but you shall cry

out for pain of heart, and shall wail for anguish of spirit. You

shall leave your name to my chosen for a curse, and the Lord GOD will

slay you; but his servants he will call by a different name. So that

he who blesses himself in the land shall bless himself by the God of

truth, and he who takes an oath in the land shall swear by the God of

truth; because the former troubles are forgotten and are hid from my

eyes.

(C) 2011 Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America

Old Testament Reading

The reading is from Genesis 46:1-7

So Israel took his journey with all that he had, and came to

Beersheba, and offered sacrifices to the God of his father Isaac. And God

spoke to Israel in visions of the night, and said, "Jacob, Jacob." And

he said, "Here am I." Then he said, "I am God, the God of your

father; do not be afraid to go down to Egypt; for I will there make of

you a great nation. I will go down with you to Egypt, and I will

also bring you up again; and Joseph's hand shall close your eyes."

Then Jacob set out from Beersheba; and the sons of Israel carried

Jacob their father, their little ones, and their wives, in the wagons

which Pharaoh had sent to carry him. They also took their cattle and

their goods, which they had gained in the land of Canaan, and came into

Egypt, Jacob and all his offspring with him, his sons, and his sons'

sons with him, his daughters, and his sons' daughters; all his

offspring he brought with him into Egypt.

(C) 2011 Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America

Old Testament Reading

The reading is from Proverbs 23:15-24:5

My son, if your heart is wise, my heart too will be glad. My soul

will rejoice when your lips speak what is right. Let not your heart

envy sinners, but continue in the fear of the LORD all the day.

Surely there is a future, and your hope will not be cut off. Hear, my

son, and be wise, and direct your mind in the way. Be not among

winebibbers, or among gluttonous eaters of meat; for the drunkard and the

glutton will come to poverty, and drowsiness will clothe a man with rags.

Hearken to your father who begot you, and do not despise your

mother when she is old. Buy truth, and do not sell it; buy wisdom,

instruction, and understanding. The father of the righteous will greatly

rejoice; he who begets a wise son will be glad in him. Let your father

and mother be glad, let her who bore you rejoice. My son, give me

your heart, and let your eyes observe my ways. For a harlot is a deep

pit; an adventuress is a narrow well. She lies in wait like a robber

and increases the faithless among men. Who has woe? Who has sorrow?

Who has strife? Who has complaining? Who has wounds without cause?

Who has redness of eyes? Those who tarry long over wine, those who

go to try mixed wine. Do not look at wine when it is red, when it

sparkles in the cup and goes down smoothly. At the last it bites like a

serpent, and stings like an adder. Your eyes will see strange things, and

your mind utter perverse things. You will be like one who lies down

in the midst of the sea, like one who lies on the top of a mast.

"They struck me," you will say, "but I was not hurt; they beat me, but

I did not feel it. When shall I awake? I will seek another drink."

Be not envious of evil men, nor desire to be with them; for their

minds devise violence, and their lips talk of mischief. By wisdom a

house is built, and by understanding it is established; by knowledge

the rooms are filled with all precious and pleasant riches. A wise

man is mightier than a strong man, and a man of knowledge than he who

has strength.

Aristarchos, Pudens, Trophimos the Apostles of the 70

Reading from the Synaxarion:

Saint Aristarchos is mentioned in the Epistle to the Colossians (4:10),

and also in the Epistle to Philemon (v. 24). By his ascetical manner

of life, this Saint proved to be another Saint John the Baptist. He

became Bishop of Apamea in Syria, and brought many to the Faith of

Christ. Saints Pudens and Trophimos are mentioned in II Timothy 4:20-21.

Also, Acts 21:29 mentions that Trophimos was from Ephesus. According to

sources that Saint Dorotheus of Tyre (celebrated on June 5) found written

in Latin in Rome, these Apostles were beheaded in Rome during the

reign of Nero (54-68).

This body, bhikkhus, is perishable, consciousness is of a nature to dissolve, and all objects of clinging are impermanent, suffering and subject to change.

-The Buddha

Impermanence is chosen as a worthy object of meditation in Buddhism because, although we may understand it intellectually, we mostly do not behave as though we have integrated this awareness. A combination of analysis and concentration on this topic brings the insight to life so that we appreciate the preciousness of every moment of our experience.

-The Dalai Lama

If we are not empty, we become a block of matter.

We cannot breathe, we cannot think.

To be empty means to be alive, to breathe in and to breathe out.

We cannot be alive if we are not empty.

Emptiness is impermanence, it is change.

We should not complain about impermanence,

because without impermanence, nothing is possible.

Philippians 2:5-11

5Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus,

6 who, though he was in the form of God,

did not regard equality with God

as something to be exploited,

7 but emptied himself,

taking the form of a slave,

being born in human likeness.

And being found in human form,

8 he humbled himself

and became obedient to the point of death—

even death on a cross.

9 Therefore God also highly exalted him

and gave him the name

that is above every name,

10 so that at the name of Jesus

every knee should bend,

in heaven and on earth and under the earth,

11 and every tongue should confess

that Jesus Christ is Lord,

to the glory of God the Father.

Heiligen des Tages : Hl. Martin I.

Hl. Martin I.

Papst, Märtyrer

* um 600 in Todi in Umbrien in Italien

Strict Fast

Readings for today:

Isaiah 58:1-11

Genesis 43:26-31; 45:1-16

Proverbs 21:23-22:4

Feasts and Saints celebrated today:

Martin the Confessor, Pope of Rome

Old Testament Reading

The reading is from Isaiah 58:1-11

Thus says the LORD: "Cry aloud, spare not, lift up your voice like a

trumpet; declare to my people their transgression, to the house of Jacob

their sins. Yet they seek me daily, and delight to know my ways, as if

they were a nation that did righteousness and did not forsake the

ordinance of their God; they ask of me righteous judgments, they delight to

draw near to God. 'Why have we fasted, and thou seest it not? Why

have we humbled ourselves, and thou takest no knowledge of it?'

Behold, in the day of your fast you seek your own pleasure, and oppress

all your workers. Behold, you fast only to quarrel and to fight and

to hit with wicked fist. Fasting like yours this day will not make

your voice to be heard on high. Is such the fast that I choose, a day

for a man to humble himself? Is it to bow down his head like a rush,

and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him? Will you call this a

fast, and a day acceptable to the LORD?

"Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of

wickedness, to undo the thongs of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and

to break every yoke? Is it not to share your bread with the hungry,

and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked,

to cover him, and not to hide yourself from your own flesh? Then

shall your light break forth like the dawn, and your healing shall

spring up speedily; your righteousness shall go before you, the glory of

the LORD shall be your rear guard. Then you shall call, and the LORD

will answer; you shall cry, and he will say, "Here I am."

"If you take away from the midst of you the yoke, the pointing of the

finger, and speaking wickedness, if you pour yourself out for the hungry

and satisfy the desire of the afflicted, then shall your light rise

in the darkness and your gloom be as the noonday. And the LORD will

guide you continually, and satisfy your desire with good things, and

make your bones strong; and you shall be like a watered garden, like a

spring of water, whose waters fail not.

Old Testament Reading

The reading is from Genesis 43:26-31; 45:1-16

When Joseph came home, they brought into the house to him the

present which they had with them, and bowed down to him to the ground.

And he inquired about their welfare, and said, "Is your father well,

the old man of whom you spoke? Is he still alive?" They said, "Your

servant our father is well, he is still alive." And they bowed their

heads and made obeisance. And he lifted up his eyes, and saw his

brother Benjamin, his mother's son, and said, "Is this your youngest

brother, of whom you spoke to me? God be gracious to you, my son!" Then

Joseph made haste, for his heart yearned for his brother, and he sought

a place to weep. And he entered his chamber and wept there. Then

he washed his face and came out; and controlling himself he said,

"Let food be served."

(Chapter 45:1-16) Then Joseph could not control himself before all those

who stood by him; and he cried, "Make every one go out from me." So

no one stayed with him when Joseph made himself known to his

brothers. And he wept aloud, so that the Egyptians heard it, and the

household of Pharaoh heard it. And Joseph said to his brothers, "I am

Joseph; is my father still alive?" But his brothers could not answer him,

for they were dismayed at his presence. So Joseph said to his

brothers, "Come near to me, I pray you." And they came near. And he said,

"I am your brother, Joseph, whom you sold into Egypt. And now do

not be distressed, or angry with yourselves, because you sold me

here; for God sent me before you to preserve life. For the famine has

been in the land these two years; and there are yet five years in

which there will be neither plowing nor harvest. And God sent me

before you to preserve for you a remnant on earth, and to keep alive for

you many survivors. So it was not you who sent me here, but God; and

he has made me a father to Pharaoh, and lord of all his house and

ruler over all the land of Egypt. Make haste and go up to my father

and say to him, 'Thus says your son Joseph, God has made me lord of

all Egypt; come down to me, do not tarry; you shall dwell in the land

of Goshen, and you shall be near me, you and your children and your

children's children, and your flocks, your herds, and all that you have; and

there I will provide for you, for there are yet five years of famine to

come; lest you and your household, and all that you have, come to

poverty.' And now your eyes see, and the eyes of my brother Benjamin see,

that it is my mouth that speaks to you. You must tell my father of

all my splendor in Egypt, and of all that you have seen. Make haste

and bring my father down here." Then he fell upon his brother

Benjamin's neck and wept; and Benjamin wept upon his neck. And he kissed

all his brothers and wept upon them; and after that his brothers

talked with him. When the report was heard in Pharaoh's house,

"Joseph's brothers have come," it pleased Pharaoh and his servants well.

Old Testament Reading

The reading is from Proverbs 21:23-22:4

He who keeps his mouth and his tongue keeps himself out of trouble.

"Scoffer" is the name of the proud, haughty man who acts with arrogant

pride. The desire of the sluggard kills him for his hands refuse to

labor. All day long the wicked covets, but the righteous gives and does

not hold back. The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination; how

much more when he brings it with evil intent. A false witness will

perish, but the word of a man who hears will endure. A wicked man puts

on a bold face, but an upright man considers his ways. No wisdom,

no understanding, no counsel, can avail against the LORD. The horse

is made ready for the day of battle, but the victory belongs to the

LORD. A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, and favor

is better than silver or gold. The rich and the poor meet together;

the LORD is the maker of them all. A prudent man sees danger and

hides himself; but the simple go on, and suffer for it. The reward for

humility and fear of the LORD is riches and honor and life.

Martin the Confessor, Pope of Rome

Reading from the Synaxarion:

Saint Martin was born in Tuscany. He had been the papal delegate at

Constantinople; upon the death of Pope Theodore, Saint Martin was elected his

successor. At this time the Emperor Constans II, also known as Constantine

Pogonatus (reigned 641-668), was seeking support of his confession of faith

called the Typos, which espoused the Monothelite heresy, that is, that

there is only one will and energy in the Incarnate Son of God. But the

newly-consecrated Pope not only did not accept the Typos, but convened the Lateran

Council of 649 (attended by 105 of his bishops, and Saint Maximus the

Confessor, who was then in Rome), which anathematized the Typos and the

Monothelite heresy. Because of this Saint Martin was seized by an imperial

force in 653 and brought to Constantinople, where he was charged with

sending money to the Saracens and conspiring with them, and blaspheming

against the most holy Mother of God. Though innocent of these

accusations, he was exiled to Cherson on the Black Sea, where, after many

sufferings and privations, he received the crown of his courageous

confession in the year 655.
