Lent is a season of soul searching, repentance, and spiritual growth in preparation for Easter. It is an imitation of Jesus' withdrawal into the wilderness for forty days of encounter, testing, and renewal.
As God physically saved humanity through Noah, he saves our souls through Jesus. God made a solemn promise, or covenant, with Noah, us as his descendants, and all creation to never again destroy the world by flood. The rainbow is the sign of that promise.
The flood provided humanity with another chance at life and healing. God's promise to Noah is a promise of love. But God's best promise of all is that he freely offers us salvation and eternal life through Jesus.
Jesus is God's promise, God's rainbow to us. He is the rainbow of redemption.
Lord Jesus, in your word is life and joy. Fill us with your Holy Spirit that we may have strength and courage to embrace your will in all things. Amen.
