Epiphany 5

Read today's Higher Things Daily Reflection

February 6, 2011 - The Fifth Sunday after the Epiphany

Today's Reading: Matthew 13:24-30,36-43

Daily Lectionary: Job 3:11-26; John 1:35-51

The servants said to him, 'Do you want us then to go and gather them up?'But he said, 'No, lest while you gather up the tares you also uproot the wheat with them.'" (Matthew 13:28-29)

In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. There are a lot of churches out there that want to change the world. They want to identify evil and make laws to get rid of it. (That sword cuts both ways as there are non-Christian religions who want to do the same things!) But the church's job is not to change the world. It's not to find evil and destroy it. It's not to seek out the people it thinks are evil and get rid of them.

Jesus didn't come to establish His kingdom by force or by violence. Rather, He died on the cross for sinners, for the whole world, at the hands of evil men. He went to the cross for a world in which the enemy had planted weeds. Jesus had a scourge, and thorns and nails and a spear planted in His flesh to pay the price of sin and to overcome evil the true way: by rescuing us from sin and death and redeeming us to be God's people.

Then He sent His preachers to preach and teach, baptize and administer His Supper. That's how those who are evil will be saved. By Christ's Word. Some won't believe it, of course, and there will be a reckoning for them on the Last Day. But meanwhile, the church proclaims God's Word and shines the Light of Christ in the dark world.

Beware, then, of preachers and churches who have some agenda other than preaching Jesus. They want to stand in judgment of others and decide for themselves who is evil and should be taken care of. They may preach and protest, even try to make laws and get things done their way. But when they do not preach Christ, they disobey Him by trying to tear up the weeds along with the wheat.

As we look around and see evil in this world, we are often scared or saddened. But fear not! The Lord of the harvest has given you His Word to rescue you from sin and death. And on that Last Day, He will take away all that is evil. Until then, we rejoice that He still calls sinners to repentance so that they, like we, may be in His kingdom forever. In the Name of Jesus. Amen.

O Lord, we implore You to keep Your Church and household continually in the true faith that we who lean only on the hope of Your heavenly grace may evermore be defended by Your mighty power; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. (Collect for Epiphany 5)

Collect

O Lord, keep Your family the Church continually in the true faith that, relying on the hope of Your heavenly grace, we may ever be defended by Your mighty power; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Introit

Antiphon:

He shall bring forth your righteousness
as the light,*

and your justice as the
noonday sun.

The LORD knows the days of the
upright,*

and their inheritance shall be for-
ever. (Psalm 37:6, 18)

Psalm:

Do not fret because of evil-
doers,*

nor be envious of the workers of in-
iquity.

For they shall soon be cut down
like the grass,*

and wither as the
green herb.

For evildoers shall be
cut off;*

but those who wait on the LORD shall inher-
it the earth.

The salvation of the righteous is
from the LORD;*

He is their strength in the time of
trouble. (Psalm 37:1-2, 9, 39)

Old Testament: Gen. 18:20-33

20Then the LORD said, "Because(A) the outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is great and their sin is very grave, 21(B) I will go down to see whether they have done altogether[a] according to the outcry that has come to me. And if not,(C) I will know."

Abraham Intercedes for Sodom

22(D) So the men turned from there and went toward Sodom, but Abraham(E) still stood before the LORD. 23Then Abraham drew near and said,(F) "Will you indeed sweep away the righteous with the wicked? 24Suppose there are fifty righteous within the city. Will you then sweep away the place and not spare it for the fifty righteous who are in it? 25Far be it from you to do such a thing, to put the righteous to death with the wicked,(G) so that the righteous fare as the wicked! Far be that from you!(H) Shall not the Judge of all the earth do what is just?" 26And the LORD said,(I) "If I find at Sodom fifty righteous in the city, I will spare the whole place for their sake."

27Abraham answered and said,(J) "Behold, I have undertaken to speak to the Lord, I who am but dust and ashes. 28Suppose five of the fifty righteous are lacking. Will you destroy the whole city for lack of five?" And he said, "I will not destroy it if I find forty-five there." 29Again he spoke to him and said, "Suppose forty are found there." He answered, "For the sake of forty I will not do it." 30Then he said, "Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak. Suppose thirty are found there." He answered, "I will not do it, if I find thirty there." 31He said, "Behold, I have undertaken to speak to the Lord. Suppose twenty are found there." He answered, "For the sake of twenty I will not destroy it." 32Then he said,(K) "Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak again but this once. Suppose ten are found there." He answered, "For the sake of ten I will not destroy it." 33And the LORD went his way, when he had finished speaking to Abraham, and Abraham returned to his place.

The Parable of the Weeds

24He put another parable before them, saying, (A) "The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a man who sowed good seed in his field, 25but while his men were sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds[a] among the wheat and went away. 26So when the plants came up and bore grain, then the weeds appeared also. 27And the servants[b] of the master of the house came and said to him, 'Master, did you not sow good seed in your field? How then does it have weeds?' 28He said to them, 'An enemy has done this.' So the servants said to him, 'Then do you want us to go and gather them?' 29But he said,(B) 'No, lest in gathering the weeds you root up the wheat along with them. 30Let both grow together until the harvest, and at harvest time I will tell the reapers,(C) Gather the weeds first and bind them in bundles to be burned, but gather the wheat into my barn.'"

Offertory

The right hand of the LORD is exalted; The right hand of the LORD does valiantly. I shall not die, but live, And declare the works of the LORD. (Psalm 118)

Daily Lectionary

First Reading: Job 3:11-26

11"Why(A) did I not die at birth,

come out from the womb and expire? 12Why did(B) the knees receive me?

Or why the breasts, that I should nurse? 13For then I would have lain down and been quiet;

I would have slept; then I would have been at rest, 14with kings and counselors of the earth

who(C) rebuilt ruins for themselves, 15or with princes who had gold,

who filled their houses with silver. 16Or why was I not as a hidden(D) stillborn child,

as infants who never see the light? 17There the wicked cease from troubling,

and there the weary are at(E) rest. 18There the prisoners are at ease together;

they hear not the voice of(F) the taskmaster. 19The small and the great are there,

and the slave is free from his master.

20"Why is light given to him who is in misery,

and life to(G) the bitter in soul, 21who(H) long for death, but it comes not,

and dig for it more than for(I) hidden treasures, 22who rejoice exceedingly

and are glad when they find the grave? 23Why is light given to a man whose(J) way is hidden,

whom God has(K) hedged in? 24For my sighing comes(L) instead of[a] my bread,

and my(M) groanings are poured out like water. 25(N) For the thing that I fear comes upon me,

and what I dread befalls me. 26I am not at ease, nor am I quiet;

I have no rest, but trouble comes."

Second Reading: John 1:35-51

Jesus Calls the First Disciples

35The next day again John was standing with two of his disciples, 36and he looked at Jesus as he walked by and said, "Behold,(A) the Lamb of God!" 37The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus. 38Jesus turned and saw them following and said to them, (B) "What are you seeking?" And they said to him,(C) "Rabbi" (which means Teacher), "where are you staying?" 39He said to them, "Come and you will see." So they came and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day, for it was about the tenth hour.[a] 40(D) One of the two who heard John speak and followed Jesus[b] was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. 41He first found his own brother Simon and said to him, "We have found(E) the Messiah" (which means Christ). 42He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, "So you are Simon the son of(F) John? You shall be called(G) Cephas" (which means(H) Peter[c]).

Jesus Calls Philip and Nathanael

43(I) The next day Jesus decided(J) to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, "Follow me." 44Now(K) Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. 45Philip found(L) Nathanael and said to him, "We have found him of whom(M) Moses in the Law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus(N) of Nazareth,(O) the son of Joseph." 46Nathanael said to him,(P) "Can anything good come out of Nazareth?" Philip said to him, "Come and see." 47Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said of him, "Behold,(Q) an Israelite indeed,(R) in whom there is no deceit!" 48Nathanael said to him, "How(S) do you know me?" Jesus answered him, "Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you." 49Nathanael answered him,(T) "Rabbi,(U) you are the Son of God! You are the(V) King of Israel!" 50Jesus answered him, "Because I said to you, 'I saw you under the fig tree,' do you believe? You will see greater things than these." 51And he said to him, "Truly, truly, I say to you,[d] you will see(W) heaven opened, and(X) the angels of God ascending and descending on(Y) the Son of Man."
