East Syrian-Antiochian

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The following is an experimental text being considered for use in one parish. It is based upon the current Chaldean (East Syrian Rite) but the translations have been modified to suit English usage. The original translation was done by the Chaldean Eparchy of St. Thomas the Apostle for use in a celebration of the Liturgy at Moreau Seminary (Notre Dame) in 1985. The following adaptations have been made by Rev. Dr. Stephen F. Duncan, OCCA, DMA, Deacon of Holy Wisdom Community of the Orthodox Catholic Church of America - Diocese of the Southwest. Unfortunately, I am not a great editor and typographical and editorial mistakes may still exist in the document (and knowing my typing probably do exist). If you find one, please let me know.

The Nicean Creed

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, One in being with the Father. Through Him all things were made. For us and for our salvation He came down from heaven:

(All bow at the following words) and became man.

By the power of the Holy Spirit He was born of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake He was crucified under Pontius Pilate; He suffered, died, and was buried. On the third day He rose again in fulfillment of the Scriptures; He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead, and His kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father. With the Father and the Son He is worshipped and glorified. He has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins, We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Deacon: Let us pray in memory of our Fathers, the Patriarchs, the bishops, and all the priests and clergy, the sisters and brothers, young men and virgins, and all who have departed this world in the true faith. Let us pray for our fathers, mothers, brothers and sisters; for our sons and daughters; and for all the rulers who love Christ. May our sacrifice be accepted and sanctified by the Word of God and by the Holy Spirit for our good, help, salvation and everlasting life in the kingdom of heaven through the grace of Christ.

Priest: May we lift up glory, honor, thanksgiving and adoration to You, + now and at all times and for ever.

Assembly: Amen.

Priest: Peace + be with you.

Assembly: And also with you.

Deacon: Let us give peace to one another in the love of Christ.

The sign of peace is passed from the Priest to the Deacon and then to all the assembly.

Deacon: Let us all praise and beseech the Lord in purity and penance. In reverence, look upon what is taking place before you -- these awesome mysteries to be consecrated. Let us cast down our pride and lift up our minds to heaven in meditation and attention. Now let us pray. Let no one dare speak. Let those who pray, pray in the silence of their hearts.

During this deacon's prayer the priest forms the "tomb" around the gifts first uncovering them with the veil and then using the veil to make the "tomb".

Priest: May this incense be blessed in the name of Your glorious Trinity that we might offer it in Your honor for the pardon of our sins for ever and ever, Amen.

The celebrant incenses the gifts and altar

Priest: O Christ, You accepted the blood of the martyrs on the day of their passion, accept this incense from my weak hands through the goodness of Your love. Amen.

May this incense which we offer before Your holy altar in Your glorious temple be pleasing to You, our Lord and our God; may it bring joy to Your holy name and forgiveness to Your holy servants. You are Father Son and Holy Spirit, one God for ever and ever unto ages of ages. Amen.

Priest: May Your Holy Spirit come upon these gifts. May He bless and hallow them that they become for us the pardon of sins and forgiveness of our offenses, the hope of resurrection from the dead and new life in the kingdom of heaven with all those who have been pleasing to You. Because of Your mercy towards us, we praise You without ceasing and glorify You in Your Church ransomed by the blood of Christ.
