Daily Lectionary: Job 36:1-21; John 11:38-57

Now when He had said these things, He cried with a loud voice, "Lazarus, come forth!" And he who had died came out bound hand and foot with graveclothes, and his face was wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, "Loose him, and let him go." (John 11:43-44)

In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. What a beautiful picture of your own salvation in the raising of Lazarus! Jesus went to Calvary and was crucified for your sins and rose again the third day. It is in view of that saving work that Jesus demonstrates He has destroyed death's power by raising Lazarus.

In Baptism, you are raised from death. And it's not like most people say, some “choice” that you made. Did Lazarus have a choice? Did Jesus say to Lazarus, “Lazarus, I'd like you to come out. If you just decide to come out, then you can be alive again.” No. Lazarus was dead. He couldn't do anything. But, as God's Word does what it says, all it takes is for the Son of God to say, “Lazarus come forth!”

So, at your Baptism, Jesus' Word is spoken and you, who were dead in your trespasses and sins, were made alive. Your being “converted” or “born again” has nothing to do with YOU but with God's Word. His Word does what it says and so it says you are alive and forgiven and a new creation.

What happens next to Lazarus? Even though he's alive, he's still wrapped up in the burial linens. So Jesus speaks to have those removed. Just so, even though you are baptized, you still have the remnants of sin and death clinging to you. So Jesus commands your pastor to remove those and he does so by preaching and teaching the Word of God and absolving you of your sins and giving you Jesus' Body and Blood to eat and drink. In this way those trappings of sin are left behind.

What happens to Lazarus happens to you: You are raised from the death of sin and your sin and death bandages are unwound. All by the Words of Jesus. In the Name of Jesus. Amen.

Jesus has come! Now see bonds rent asunder! Fetters of death now dissolve, disappear. See Him burst through with a voice as of thunder! He sets us free from our guilt and our fear, Lifts us from shame to the place of His honor. Jesus has come! Hear the roll of God's thunder! (LSB 533:2)

Collect

O God, the Strength of all who put their trust in You, mercifully grant that by Your power we may be defended against all adversity; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

First Reading: Job 36:1-21

Elihu Extols God’s Greatness

1And Elihu continued, and said:

2"Bear with me a little, and I will show you,

for I have yet something to say on God’s behalf. 3I will get my knowledge from(A) afar

and ascribe(B) righteousness to my(C) Maker. 4For truly my words are not false;

one who is(D) perfect in knowledge is with you.

5"Behold, God is mighty, and(E) does not despise any;

he is(F) mighty in strength of understanding. 6He does not keep the wicked alive,

but gives(G) the afflicted their right. 7He does not withdraw his(H) eyes from the righteous,

but with(I) kings on the throne

he sets them forever, and they are(J) exalted. 8And if they are(K) bound in chains

and caught in the cords of affliction, 9then he declares to them their work

and their transgressions, that they are(L) behaving arrogantly. 10He(M) opens their ears to instruction

and commands that they(N) return from iniquity. 11(O) If they listen and serve him,

they(P) complete their days in prosperity,

and their years in pleasantness. 12But if they do not listen, they(Q) perish by the sword

and die(R) without knowledge.

13"The(S) godless in heart cherish anger;

they do not cry for help when he(T) binds them. 14They(U) die in youth,

and their life ends among the cult prostitutes. 15He delivers(V) the afflicted by their affliction

and(W) opens their ear by adversity. 16He also allured you out of distress

into(X) a broad place where there was no cramping,

and what was set on your(Y) table was full of(Z) fatness.

17"But you are full of the judgment on the wicked;

judgment and justice seize you. 18Beware lest wrath entice you into scoffing,

and let not the greatness of(AA) the ransom turn you aside. 19Will your(AB) cry for help avail to keep you from distress,

or all the force of your strength? 20Do not long for(AC) the night,

when peoples vanish(AD) in their place. 21Take care;(AE) do not turn to iniquity,

for this you have chosen rather than affliction.

Second Reading: John 11:38-57

Jesus Raises Lazarus

38Then Jesus,(A) deeply moved again, came to the tomb. It was(B) a cave, and(C) a stone lay against it. 39Jesus said, "Take away the stone." Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, "Lord, by this time there will be an odor, for(D) he has been dead four days." 40Jesus said to her, (E) "Did I not tell you that if you believed you would see(F) the glory of God?" 41So they took away the stone. And Jesus(G) lifted up his eyes and said, "Father, I thank you that you have heard me. 42(H) I knew that you always hear me, but I said this(I) on account of the people standing around,(J) that they may believe that you sent me." 43When he had said these things, he cried out with a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out." 44(K) The man who had died came out,(L) his hands and feet bound with linen strips, and(M) his face wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, "Unbind him, and let him go."

The Plot to Kill Jesus

45(N) Many of the Jews therefore,(O) who had come with Mary and(P) had seen what he did, believed in him, 46but some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done. 47So the chief priests and the Pharisees(Q) gathered(R) the Council and said,(S) "What are we to do? For this man performs many signs. 48If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and(T) the Romans will come and take away both our(U) place and our nation." 49But one of them,(V) Caiaphas,(W) who was high priest that year, said to them, "You know nothing at all. 50Nor do you understand that(X) it is better for you that one man should die for the people, not that the whole nation should perish." 51He did not say this of his own accord, but(Y) being high priest that year(Z) he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation, 52and(AA) not for the nation only, but also(AB) to gather into one the children of God who are scattered abroad. 53So from that day on they(AC) made plans to put him to death.

54Jesus therefore(AD) no longer walked openly among the Jews, but went from there to the region near the wilderness, to a town called Ephraim, and there he stayed with the disciples.

55Now(AE) the Passover of the Jews was at hand, and(AF) many went up from the country to Jerusalem before the Passover(AG) to purify themselves. 56(AH) They were looking for[a] Jesus and saying to one another as they stood in the temple, "What do you think? That he will not come to the feast at all?" 57Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone knew where he was, he should let them know, so that they might arrest him.
