Daily Lectionary: Genesis 8:13-9:17; Mark 4:1-20

You shall not steal. What does this mean? We should fear and love God so that we do not take our neighbor's money or possessions, or get them in any dishonest way, but help him to improve and protect his possessions and income. (The Seventh Commandment)

In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. The Law really pins us down! On the one hand, we steal and take what doesn't belong to us because we aren't happy with what God has given us. Can't afford the latest music? Download it for “free.” Don't like the clothes your parents bought you? Tuck that nice new shirt in your purse where no one can see it.

On the other hand, we neglect to help those around us with their things because we're so obsessed with what we've got. You can help your brother fix his video game. If he weren't interrupting your Facebook time. You could take the car in for that oil change so Dad doesn't have to do it; except you'll be late for hanging out after school. Because we want ourselves at the center of the universe, we break the Seventh and every other commandment.

So what's to be done? The Lord knows that we can't afford to get rid of our own sins. So He does it. He comes and takes them from us. Snatches them away and takes them as His own. Then takes them to Calvary and covers them in His blood and leaves them buried in the empty tomb.

Are you a thief? The Seventh Commandment says that you are. But the blood of Jesus, given to you in Baptism, His Supper and His Word, says that Jesus is the thief. He is the sinner. You are set free. Your sins have become His and He has gotten rid of them. And He has given you, in their place, a holiness and righteousness as a free gift. You don't have to beg, borrow, or steal to have it. It's a gift. In the Name of Jesus. Amen.

But since my strength will nevermore suffice me To crucify desires that still entice me, To all good deeds O let Thy Spirit win me And reign within me! (LSB 439:11)

Collect

O Lord God, You led Your ancient people through the wilderness and brought them to the promised land. Guide the people of Your Church that, following our Savior, we may walk through the wilderness of this world toward the glory of the world to come; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

First Reading: Gen. 8:13-9:17

13In the six hundred and first year, in the first month, the first day of the month, the waters were dried from off the earth. And Noah removed the covering of the ark and looked, and behold, the face of the ground was dry. 14In the second month, on the twenty-seventh day of the month, the earth had dried out. 15Then God said to Noah, 16"Go out from the ark,(A) you and your wife, and your sons and your sons’ wives with you. 17Bring out with you every living thing that is with you of all flesh—birds and animals and every creeping thing that creeps on the earth—that they may swarm on the earth, and(B) be fruitful and multiply on the earth." 18So Noah went out, and his sons and his wife and his sons’ wives with him. 19Every beast, every creeping thing, and every bird, everything that moves on the earth, went out by families from the ark.

God’s Covenant with Noah

20Then Noah built an altar to the LORD and took some of every clean animal and some of every clean bird and offered burnt offerings on the altar. 21And when the LORD smelled(C) the pleasing aroma, the LORD said in his heart, "I will never again(D) curse[a] the ground because of man, for(E) the intention of man’s heart is evil from his youth.(F) Neither will I ever again strike down every living creature as I have done. 22(G) While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter,(H) day and night, shall not cease."

1And God blessed Noah and his sons and said to them,(I) "Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth. 2(J) The fear of you and the dread of you shall be upon every beast of the earth and upon every bird of the heavens, upon everything that creeps on the ground and all the fish of the sea. Into your hand they are delivered. 3(K) Every moving thing that lives shall be food for you. And(L) as I gave you the green plants, I give you everything. 4But you shall not eat flesh with its(M) life, that is, its blood. 5And for your lifeblood I will require a reckoning:(N) from every beast I will require it and(O) from man. From his fellow man I will require a reckoning for the life of man.

6(P) "Whoever sheds the blood of man,

by man shall his blood be shed,(Q) for God made man in his own image.

7And you,[b] be fruitful and multiply, teem on the earth and multiply in it."

8Then God said to Noah and to his sons with him, 9"Behold,(R) I establish my covenant with you and your offspring after you, 10and with every living creature that is with you, the birds, the livestock, and every beast of the earth with you, as many as came out of the ark; it is for every beast of the earth. 11(S) I establish my covenant with you, that never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of the flood, and never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth." 12And God said,(T) "This is the sign of the covenant that I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all future generations: 13I have set(U) my bow in the cloud, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth. 14When I bring clouds over the earth and the bow is seen in the clouds, 15(V) I will remember my covenant that is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh. And the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh. 16When the bow is in the clouds, I will see it and remember(W) the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth." 17God said to Noah, "This is the sign of the covenant that I have established between me and all flesh that is on the earth."

Second Reading: Mk. 4:1-20

The Parable of the Sower

1Again(A) he began to teach beside the sea. And a very large crowd gathered about him,(B) so that he got into a boat and sat in it on the sea, and the whole crowd was beside the sea on the land. 2And(C) he was teaching them many things in parables, and in his teaching he said to them: 3"Listen!(D) A sower went out to sow. 4And as he sowed, some seed fell along the path, and the birds came and devoured it. 5Other seed fell on rocky ground, where it did not have much soil, and immediately it sprang up, since it had no depth of soil. 6And(E) when the sun rose, it was scorched, and since it had no root,(F) it withered away. 7Other seed fell among(G) thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it, and it yielded no grain. 8And other seeds fell into good soil and produced grain, growing up and increasing and yielding thirtyfold and sixtyfold and(H) a hundredfold." 9And he said, (I) "He who has ears to hear, let him hear."

The Purpose of the Parables

10And(J) when he was alone, those around him with the twelve asked him about the parables. 11And he said to them, (K) "To you has been given(L) the secret of the kingdom of God, but for(M) those outside everything is in parables, 12(N) so that

"they(O) may indeed see but not perceive,

and may indeed hear but not understand, lest they(P) should turn and be forgiven."

13(Q) And he said to them, "Do you not understand this parable? How then will you understand all the parables? 14(R) The sower sows(S) the word. 15And these are the ones along the path, where the word is sown: when they hear, Satan immediately comes and takes away the word that is sown in them. 16And these are the ones sown on rocky ground: the ones who, when they hear the word, immediately receive it(T) with joy. 17And they have no root in themselves, but(U) endure for a while; then, when tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately(V) they fall away.[a] 18And others are the ones sown among thorns. They are those who hear the word, 19but(W) the cares of(X) the world and(Y) the deceitfulness of riches and the desires for other things enter in and choke the word, and it proves unfruitful. 20But those that were sown on the good soil are the ones who hear the word and accept it and(Z) bear fruit,(AA) thirtyfold and sixtyfold and a hundredfold."

Wednesday Father Reading

"During its administration the Body of Christ is given to you in particular with the bread and the blood with the wine, while you are personally told that His body was given for you and that His blood was shed for you. This is done so that you do not doubt but appropriate this sacrifice as your very own, because it is placed into your mouth and made your own, to eat and to drink for yourself only. In this act of communion, god is certainly not dealing and speaking with just any person, but with you." [:Luther. "Sermon on John 4:47-54."]
