The Source of Temptation

KEY VERSE: "Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death," James 1:15.

It is a hot summer's day and two boys are walking by a watermelon patch. They begin to think about how refreshing a delicious piece of watermelon would be. They have no money to buy a watermelon, but they desperately want one. They know it would be wrong to steal a watermelon but decide to do so anyway. Their temptation to sin came from within. Their uncontrollable desire to have a piece of watermelon causes them to sin and steal a watermelon.

When confronted with committing sinful behavior, a person may say, "The devil made me do it." The reality is, the devil cannot cause a person to sin or tempt him to sin. All Satan can do is offer a person the opportunity to sin. Eve did not eat the forbidden fruit because Satan told her to do so but because she desired to do so. The uncontrolled passions of the flesh cause a person to contemplate committing sin. Sin is committed once the uncontrolled passions are satisfied. A sinner has no one to blame but himself for committing sin.

A person requires discipline to resist the temptation to sin. He should avoid people who would tempt him to sin. He should not go to places where the temptation to sin would be too great to resist. He should avoid the presence of evil.

JUST A THOUGHT: The lusts of the mind cause the body to sin.
