For the vineyard of the Lord of hosts is the house of Israel, and the men of Juda his beloved plant: I expected it to bring forth judgement, and it brought forth iniquity; and not righteousness, but a cry. Woe to them that join house to house, and add field to field, that they may take away something of their neighbor's: will ye dwell alone upon the land? For these things have reached the ears o the Lord of hosts: for though many houses should be built, many and fair houses shall be desolate, and there shall be no inhabitants in them. For where ten yoke of oxen plough the land shall yield one jar-full, and he that sows six homers shall produce three measures. Woe to them that rise up in the morning, and follow strong drink; who wait at it till evening: for the wine shall inflame them. For they drink wine with harp, and psaltery, and drums, and pipes: but they regard not the works of the Lord, and consider not the works of his hands. Therefore my people have been taken captive, because they know not the Lord: and there has been a multitude of dead bodies, because of hunger and of thirst for water. My son, attend to my wisdom, and apply thine ear to my words; that thou mayest keep good understanding, and the discretion of my lips gives thee a charge. Give no heed to a worthless woman; for honey drops from the lips of a harlot, who for a season pleases thy palate: but afterwards thou wilt find her more bitter than gall, and sharper than a two-edged sword. For the feet of folly lead those who deal with her down to the grave with death; and her steps are not established. For she goes not upon the paths of life; but her ways are slippery, and not easily known. Now then, my son, hear me, and make not my words of none effect. Виноградник Господа Саваофа есть дом Израилев, и мужи Иуды - любимое насаждение Его. И ждал Он правосудия, но вот - кровопролитие; ждал правды, и вот - вопль. Горе вам, прибавляющие дом к дому, присоединяющие поле к полю, так что другим не остается места, как будто вы одни поселены на земле. В уши мои сказал Господь Саваоф: многочисленные домы эти будут пусты, большие и красивые - без жителей; десять участков в винограднике дадут один бат, и хомер посеянного зерна едва принесет ефу. Горе тем, которые с раннего утра ищут сикеры и до позднего вечера разгорячают себя вином; и цитра и гусли, тимпан и свирель и вино на пиршествах их; а на дела Господа они не взирают и о деяниях рук Его не помышляют. За то народ мой пойдет в плен непредвиденно, и вельможи его будут голодать, и богачи его будут томиться жаждою. За то преисподняя расширилась и без меры раскрыла пасть свою: и сойдет туда слава их и богатство их, и шум их и все, что веселит их.
