Magnitude of Hope

Nathan Magrath served as a short-term volunteer in Sudan through the RCA's Mission Volunteer Program.

Five months ago I stepped off the smallest plane I had ever flown in and onto the ground of the first dirt airstrip I had ever landed on. So marked the first of many new experiences during my stay in Sudan and my work with RECONCILE, an indigenous organization devoted to the building of peace and democratic transformation within Sudan. I had done a fair amount of research concerning Sudan, its politics, and its possible future during my studies at Hope College, but I don't believe I truly understood how “real” the place was until my visit. Sudan is an extraordinary place that is facing some trying times, but has offered me some good lessons as well. Read more.

Urgent Need for Volunteers

The news is full of coverage of recent disasters, but the disasters of months or years ago are still affecting people living in those communities. When the Reformed Church in America sends volunteers to a disaster site, it does so in the context of long term recovery.

It's important not to forget those struggling with a disaster that occurred a few years ago. Through the RCA's volunteer office, you can provide much-needed hope for residents in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, who are still rebuilding from the June 2008 flood.

The volunteer program is aware of the needs of our mission partners, our ecumenical partners, and of needs within the Reformed Church in America. These needs are as diverse as the gifts and talents of the people in our congregations:

•A community needs teams to help repair houses damaged in recent hurricanes.

•Schools in Bahrain and Japan need teachers.

•A missionary family in West Africa needs a teacher for their children.

•A camp in Kentucky needs builders and teams to help get ready in the Spring.

The RCA Mission Volunteer Program works with the RCA's partners around the world, the Christian Reformed World Relief Committee - Disaster Response Services, our Formula of Agreement Partners, the ELCA and PCUSA, and a variety of ecumenical partners ands organizations. We thank all of our partners as we seek to work together, serve together and not duplicate services.

Volunteers link congregations to other cultures and help them get to know their Christian brothers and sisters across the ocean and across the street. It is our hope that even one person's volunteer experience can bring growth and benefits to an entire congregation.

Today's Scripture: Psalm 2

Psalm 2

God’s Promise to His Anointed

1 Why do the nations conspire,

and the peoples plot in vain?

2 The kings of the earth set themselves,

and the rulers take counsel together,

against the Lord and his anointed, saying,

3 ‘Let us burst their bonds asunder,

and cast their cords from us.’

4 He who sits in the heavens laughs;

the Lord has them in derision.

5 Then he will speak to them in his wrath,

and terrify them in his fury, saying,

6 ‘I have set my king on Zion, my holy hill.’

7 I will tell of the decree of the Lord:

He said to me, ‘You are my son;

today I have begotten you.

8 Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage,

and the ends of the earth your possession.

9 You shall break them with a rod of iron,

and dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.’

10 Now therefore, O kings, be wise;

be warned, O rulers of the earth.

11 Serve the Lord with fear,

with trembling 12kiss his feet,*

or he will be angry, and you will perish in the way;

for his wrath is quickly kindled.

Happy are all who take refuge in him.
