Baptism — Buried and Raised

KEY VERSE: "Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life," Romans 6:4.

Baptism is a testimony of a believer's salvation. A lost person accepts the fact that Jesus died on the cross for his sins, was buried and rose again the third day to offer him eternal life in Heaven. Since he did not witness the Lord's death, burial and resurrection, he must accept its fact by faith.

Jesus willingly went to the cross and died for the sins of all humanity. Believers in Jesus Christ as Savior should willingly submit to baptism. Jesus died on the cross in obedience to the Heavenly Father's will. Jesus was buried in the tomb after His death. In being immersed in the waters of baptism, believers picture the burial of the Lord. Jesus rose from the grave triumphant over death. He lives again. In being raised from the immersion of baptism, the believer is picturing the Lord's resurrection from the dead.

In similitude, the believer is also picturing what has happened in conversion. He is picturing the death of the old man through the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The old man is buried with the Lord in baptism and is raised to walk in the newness of life. Baptism should not be an afterthought but a conscious desire of the believer to obey God's will.

JUST A THOUGHT: Scriptural baptism pictures the gospel of Jesus Christ.
