Circumcision and Name of Jesus

Christmastide VIII

Read today's Higher Things Daily Reflection

January 1, 2011 - The Circumcision and Name of Jesus

Today's Reading: Luke 2:21

Daily Lectionary: Isaiah 61:1-11; Luke 1:57-80

And when eight days were completed for the circumcision of the Child, His name was called JESUS, the name given by the angel before He was conceived in the womb. (Luke 2:21)

In the Name + of Jesus. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Today, Jesus spills blood for sinners for the first time, when He is circumcised. Here He fulfills the Law for us by submitting to the Law's pain and blood. He will do so again, 30 years later on Calvary, when He is under the Law on the cross and sheds His blood for sinners to save them.

That's what His name means, you know: “The Lord saves.” The very name “Jesus” means you don't save yourself, God does. And He does it by His only-begotten Son being born in the flesh, being circumcised and baptized, tempted and tortured, crucified and dead and risen.

You can't mistake what Jesus does with a name like “The Lord Saves!” His name doesn't mean “Save yourself” or “He's a really great guy to get to know” or “He'll be your best friend.” Nope. The Lord saves. That's what Jesus means. That means He's your Savior. He's got it covered by His life, death and resurrection, by Baptism, Word, Body and Blood. That's how He does His saving of you.

On the day when many make resolutions about all the things they want to try to change, take comfort in this: Your unchanging Savior has resolved, before you were even born, to come into this world and be your Savior. While the resolutions of men fade quickly and are forgotten, your being covered by the blood of Jesus reminds the Father that He has resolved to love you and forgive you and give you everlasting life. There's a resolution that counts and matters!

On the day the New Year begins, rejoice that in Christ, you already have been given a new birth and a new life in Him. In the Name of Jesus. Amen.

He undertakes a great exchange, Puts on our human frame, And in return gives us His realm, His glory, and His name, His glory, and His name. (LSB 389:4)

Collect

Lord God, You made Your beloved Son, our Savior, subject to the Law and caused Him to shed His blood on our behalf. Grant us the true circumcision of the Spirit that our hearts may be made pure from all sins; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Aaron’s Blessing

22The LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 23"Speak to Aaron and his sons, saying, Thus(A) you shall bless the people of Israel: you shall say to them,

24The LORD(B) bless you and(C) keep you; 25the LORD(D) make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; 26the LORD(E) lift up his countenance[a] upon you and give you peace.

27(F) "So shall they put my name upon the people of Israel, and I will bless them."

Epistle: Gal. 3:23-29

23Now before faith came, we were held captive under the law,(A) imprisoned until the coming faith would be revealed. 24So then,(B) the law was our(C) guardian until Christ came,(D) in order that we might be justified by faith. 25But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian, 26for in Christ Jesus(E) you are all sons of God, through faith. 27For as many of you as(F) were baptized(G) into Christ have(H) put on Christ. 28(I) There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave[a] nor free,(J) there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29And(K) if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s offspring,(L) heirs according to promise.

Daily Lectionary

First Reading: Is. 61:1-11

The Year of the LORD’s Favor

1(A) The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me,

because the LORD has(B) anointed meto bring good news to the poor;[a]

he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,to proclaim liberty to the captives,

and(C) the opening of the prison to those who are bound;[b] 2(D) to proclaim the year of the LORD’s favor,

(E) and the day of vengeance of our God;

to comfort all who mourn; 3to grant to those who mourn in Zion—

(F) to give them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes,(G) the oil of gladness instead of mourning,

the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit;(H) that they may be called oaks of righteousness,

the planting of the LORD,(I) that he may be glorified.[c] 4(J) They shall build up the ancient ruins;

they shall raise up the former devastations;they shall repair the ruined cities,

the devastations of many generations.

5(K) Strangers shall stand and tend your flocks;

foreigners shall be your plowmen and vinedressers; 6(L) but you shall be called the priests of the LORD;

they shall speak of you as the ministers of our God;(M) you shall eat the wealth of the nations,

and in their glory you shall boast. 7(N) Instead of your shame there shall be a double portion;

instead of dishonor they shall rejoice in their lot;therefore in their land they shall possess a double portion;

they shall have everlasting joy.

8(O) For I the LORD love justice;

I hate robbery and wrong;[d](P) I will faithfully give them their recompense,

(Q) and I will make an everlasting covenant with them. 9Their offspring shall be known among the nations,

and their descendants in the midst of the peoples;all who see them shall acknowledge them,

that they are an offspring the LORD has blessed.

10(R) I will greatly rejoice in the LORD;

my soul shall exult in my God,(S) for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation;

he has covered me with the robe of righteousness,as a bridegroom decks himself(T) like a priest with a beautiful headdress,

(U) and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels. 11For as the earth brings forth its sprouts,

and as a garden causes what is sown in it to sprout up,so the Lord GOD will cause(V) righteousness and praise

to sprout up before all the nations.

Second Reading: Luke 1:57-80

The Birth of John the Baptist

57Now the time came for Elizabeth to give birth, and she bore a son. 58And her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord(A) had shown great mercy to her, and they rejoiced with her. 59And(B) on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child. And they would have called him Zechariah after his father, 60but his mother answered, "No;(C) he shall be called John." 61And they said to her, "None of your relatives is called by this name." 62And(D) they made signs to his father, inquiring what he wanted him to be called. 63And he asked for(E) a writing tablet and wrote,(F) "His name is John." And they all wondered. 64(G) And immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue(H) loosed, and he spoke,(I) blessing God. 65And(J) fear came on all their neighbors. And all these things were talked about through all(K) the hill country of Judea, 66and all who heard them(L) laid them up in their hearts, saying, "What then will this child be?" For(M) the hand of the Lord was with him.

Zechariah’s Prophecy

67And his father Zechariah(N) was filled with the Holy Spirit and(O) prophesied, saying,

68(P) "Blessed be the Lord(Q) God of Israel,

for he has(R) visited and(S) redeemed his people 69and(T) has raised up(U) a horn of salvation for us

(V) in the house of his servant David, 70(W) as(X) he spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets from of old, 71(Y) that we should be saved from our enemies

and from the hand of all who hate us; 72(Z) to show the mercy promised to our fathers

and(AA) to remember his holy(AB) covenant, 73(AC) the oath that he swore to our father Abraham, to grant us

74that we, being delivered from the hand of our enemies,might serve him(AD) without fear,

75(AE) in holiness and righteousness before him(AF) all our days. 76And you, child, will be called(AG) the prophet of(AH) the Most High;

for(AI) you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways, 77to give knowledge of salvation to his people

(AJ) in the forgiveness of their sins, 78because of the(AK) tender mercy of our God,

whereby(AL) the sunrise shall(AM) visit us[a](AN) from on high 79to(AO) give light to(AP) those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death,

to guide our feet into(AQ) the way of(AR) peace."

80(AS) And the child grew and became strong in spirit, and he was(AT) in the wilderness until the day of his public appearance to Israel.
