Sunday after New Years

Read today's Higher Things Daily Reflection

January 2, 2011 - The Second Sunday after Christmas

Today's Reading: Matthew 2:13-23

Daily Lectionary: Isaiah 62:1-12; Luke 2:1-20

When he arose, he took the young Child and His mother by night and departed for Egypt, and was there until the death of Herod, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying, "Out of Egypt I called My Son." (Matthew 2:14-15)

In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. Merry Christmas! In the Old Testament, Israel was in Egypt for 430 years. Then they came out through the Red Sea. Next, they spent 40 years in the wilderness. At last, they went into the Promised Land and continued, year after year, to doubt God's promises.

When Jesus was born, His life was a repeat of Israel's life. He went to Egypt and came back out. He was in the wilderness for 40 days and then He lived His life in the Promised Land. But instead of doubting His Father, He always trusted in Him.

Later on, Old Testament Israel was punished for her idolatry and despising of God and sent into exile in Babylon. Jesus was sent into the “exile” of suffering and death, but this time not for something HE had done, but for what we sinners had done. On the cross, Jesus suffered on account of our sins so that we are forgiven on account of His life.

That's what His life is all about, beginning at His birth. Jesus came to live your life. The life you didn't live. The life in which you are supposed to fear and love and trust in God above all things but you don't. Jesus did. The life in which you are supposed to tirelessly love and care for other people instead of yourself, but don't. Jesus did. His birth marks the beginning of the earthly life in which He does what you were supposed to and then suffers and dies for your not doing it. He lived your life and died your death. so that His everlasting life is now yours.

All that is given to you in His Word. His Baptism. His Supper. The Jesus who did everything for you and in your place makes sure to give to you what He has done so that now in Him, the life you live is pleasing to God. Jesus was born to live your life and to give you His. In the Name of Jesus. Amen.

O Lord God, heavenly Father, who allowed Your dear Son, Jesus Christ, to become a stranger and sojourner in Egypt for our sake and led Him safely home to His fatherland, mercifully grant that we poor sinners who are strangers and sojourners in this perilous world, may finally come to our true home and fatherland, to live in joy and glory; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen (Collect for Christmas 2)

Collect

Almighty God, You have poured into our hearts the true Light of Your incarnate Word. Grant that this Light may shine forth in our lives; through the same Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Introit

Antiphon:

Out of the mouth of babes and nursing
infants*

You have or-
dained strength,

because of Your
enemies,*

that You may silence the enemy and the a-
venger. (Psalm 8:2)

Psalm:

O
LORD, our Lord,*

how excellent is Your name in
all the earth!

What is man that You are mind-
ful of him*

and the son of man that You
visit him?

For You have made him a little lower than the
angels,*

and You have crowned him with glory and
honor.

You have made him to have dominion over the works
of Your hands;*

You have put all things un-
der his feet. (Psalm 8:1, 4-6)

Old Testament: Gen. 46:1-7

Joseph Brings His Family to Egypt

1So Israel took his journey with all that he had and came to(A) Beersheba, and offered sacrifices(B) to the God of his father Isaac. 2And God spoke to Israel(C) in visions of the night and said, "Jacob, Jacob." And he said, "Here am I." 3Then he said, "I am God,(D) the God of your father. Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt, for there I will(E) make you into a great nation. 4I myself will go down with you to Egypt, and I will also(F) bring you up again, and(G) Joseph’s hand shall close your eyes."

5Then Jacob set out from Beersheba. The sons of Israel carried Jacob their father, their little ones, and their wives, in the wagons(H) that Pharaoh had sent to carry him. 6They also took their livestock and their goods, which they had gained in the land of Canaan, and(I) came into Egypt, Jacob and all his offspring with him, 7his sons, and his sons’ sons with him, his daughters, and his sons’ daughters. All his offspring he brought with him into Egypt.

Suffering as a Christian

12Beloved, do not be surprised at(A) the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. 13But rejoice(B) insofar as you share Christ’s sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad(C) when his glory is revealed. 14(D) If you are insulted(E) for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory[a] and of God rests upon you. 15But(F) let none of you suffer as a murderer or a thief or an evildoer or(G) as a meddler. 16Yet(H) if anyone suffers as a(I) Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God(J) in that name. 17For it is time for judgment(K) to begin at the household of God; and(L) if it begins with us, what will be the outcome for those who(M) do not obey the gospel of God? 18And

(N) "If the righteous is scarcely saved,

what will become of the ungodly and the sinner?"[b]

19Therefore let those who suffer according to God’s will(O) entrust their souls to a faithful Creator while doing good.

The Flight to Egypt

13Now when they had departed, behold,(A) an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, "Rise, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you, for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him." 14And he rose and took the child and his mother by night and departed to Egypt 15and remained there until the death of Herod.(B) This was to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet,(C) "Out of Egypt I called my son."

Herod Kills the Children

16Then Herod, when he saw that he had been tricked by the wise men, became furious, and he sent and killed all the male children in Bethlehem and in all that region who were two years old or under, according to the time that he had ascertained from the wise men. 17(D) Then was fulfilled what was spoken by the prophet Jeremiah:

18(E) "A voice was heard in Ramah,

weeping and loud lamentation,Rachel weeping for her children;

she refused to be comforted, because they(F) are no more."

The Return to Nazareth

19But when Herod died, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, 20saying, "Rise, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for(G) those who sought the child’s life are dead." 21And he rose and took the child and his mother and went to the land of Israel. 22But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there, and(H) being warned in a dream he withdrew to the district of Galilee. 23And he went and lived in a city called(I) Nazareth,(J) that what was spoken by the prophets might be fulfilled: "He shall be called a Nazarene."

Daily Lectionary

First Reading: Is. 62:1-12

Zion’s Coming Salvation

1(A) For Zion’s sake I will not keep silent,

and for Jerusalem’s sake I will not be quiet,(B) until her righteousness goes forth as brightness,

and her salvation as a burning torch. 2(C) The nations shall see your righteousness,

and all the kings your glory,(D) and you shall be called by a new name

that the mouth of the LORD will give. 3You shall be(E) a crown of beauty in the hand of the LORD,

and a royal diadem in the hand of your God. 4(F) You shall no more be termed(G) Forsaken,[a]

and your land shall no more be termed Desolate,[b](H) but you shall be called(I) My Delight Is in Her,[c]

and your land Married;[d]for the LORD delights in you,

and your land shall be married. 5For as a young man marries a young woman,

so(J) shall your sons marry you,and as the bridegroom rejoices over the bride,

so(K) shall your God rejoice over you.

6On your walls, O Jerusalem,

I have set(L) watchmen;all the day and all the night

they shall never be silent. You who put the LORD in remembrance,

take no rest, 7and give him no rest

until he establishes Jerusalem

and makes it(M) a praise in the earth. 8The LORD has sworn(N) by his right hand

and by his mighty arm:"I will not again give(O) your grain

to be food for your enemies,(P) and foreigners shall not drink your wine

for which you have labored; 9but(Q) those who garner it shall eat it

and praise the LORD,and those who gather it shall drink it

in the courts of my sanctuary."[e]

10Go through, go through the gates;

(R) prepare the way for the people;(S) build up, build up the highway;

clear it of stones;

(T) lift up a signal over the peoples. 11Behold, the LORD has proclaimed

to the end of the earth:(U) Say to the daughter of Zion,

(V) "Behold, your salvation comes;behold, his reward is with him,

and his recompense before him." 12(W) And they shall be called The Holy People,

The Redeemed of the LORD;(X) and you shall be called Sought Out,

A City Not Forsaken.

Second Reading: Luke 2:1-20

The Birth of Jesus Christ

1In those days(A) a decree went out from(B) Caesar Augustus that all the world should be(C) registered. 2This was the first(D) registration when[a] Quirinius(E) was governor of Syria. 3And all went to be registered, each to his own town. 4And Joseph also went up(F) from Galilee, from the town of(G) Nazareth, to Judea, to(H) the city of David, which is called(I) Bethlehem,(J) because he was of the house and lineage of David, 5to be registered with Mary, his betrothed,[b] who was with child. 6And(K) while they were there, the time came for her to give birth. 7And she gave birth to her firstborn son and(L) wrapped him in swaddling cloths and(M) laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in(N) the inn.

The Shepherds and the Angels

8And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9And an angel of the Lord(O) appeared to them, and(P) the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with fear. 10And the angel said to them, "Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all(Q) the people. 11For(R) unto you is born this day in(S) the city of David(T) a Savior, who is(U) Christ(V) the Lord. 12And(W) this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby(X) wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger." 13And suddenly there was with the angel(Y) a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying,

14(Z) "Glory to God(AA) in the highest,

(AB) and on earth(AC) peace among those with whom he is pleased!"[c]

15When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us." 16And they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby(AD) lying in a manger. 17And when they saw it, they made known the saying that had been told them concerning this child. 18And all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them. 19But(AE) Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart. 20And the shepherds returned,(AF) glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them.
